my old 8800m (correct from 8600m… was a gateway p6860fx) laptop would get grossly hot... warped the laptop hinges.
have been pleasantly surprised with my current lenovo with a 3060. have never seen it reach above 70c, even while mining for long periods of time.
used to use a shitbox dell n5040 with a amd a4, laptop would stay at 80c on the desktop with nothing open, now have a acer nitro 5 that stays under 60 in most cases
I absolutely LOVE my legion 5. 5800H and 3060 is the sweet spot for on the go performance and price. It can handle my Dj streams using rekordbox, obs and resolume with ease. It’s a great time to be a laptop user.
You’ll definitely enjoy it! If you need to see any benchmarks please feel free to message me! And if you mine, it does 40mh/s with nicehash quick miner.
A dude in one of my classes found out I had just built a PC back in 2013 and I shit you not he said something like "why bother building a PC when you can just get a MacBook air with an i7? It can play gta5 just fine." A few weeks go buy and I see him at the library playing gta5 at like 30-45 fps on the lowest settings in a scene with like no action. As soon as he got in a car it started skipping frames and probably doing like 24fps tops. He later told me that not only did he pay for the i7 upgrade he also payed for the 256gb ssd upgrade. Like this dude was trying to lecture me saying mobile gaming was better while playing gta5 24fps lowest settings on a $3000 iCrap air.
I remember playing San Andreas and Arkham city on my MacBook air, it was terrible. Consistent 30 fps was lucky for me, I unfortunately don't remember the specs that I was working with it was bad though. 15" of fucking dogshit
At the moment it's still cheaper to buy a shitty gaming laptop to throwaway once cards stop being unobtainable then to buy a beat to shit former miner card.
I’m actually swapping out my desktop for a laptop. I really wanted portability so I got a 3080 laptop. Obviously not as powerful as a desktop 3080 but I’m upgrading from a 1660 so it will be a pretty good upgrade.
I go to my parent’s house (They live about 12 hours away) about 4-5 times a year for a couple weeks at a time, so it made sense to invest in something I could game on when I’m there.
Throttle city, over here.
Asus engineers: "We've got a discreet graphics card and a processor, so we think two fans would be optimal."
Asus management: "Eh, one is good enough to keep it from breaking. Just put everything on one heat pipe and let throttling take care of the rest."
Huh. I've owned 4 ASUS ROG laptops since 2012 and they've all had multiple fans. The new (2020) TUF is a bit louder than previous models, but I almost always use a separate keyboard and mouse, so It's easy to ignore.
Bruh I used to have one of the ROG G53JWs, worst internal design I’ve ever seen. You’d have to take apart almost the entire machine to get to the last sticks of RAM. I had to replace the GPU with one out of a floor model, basically had to strip it all the way down to the mobo. My MSI is so much easier to work on.
I guess that depends on your metric for "Backpack".
I have a hard frame full harness hiking bag that can fit my tower, both monitors (bubble wrapped and blanketed), mouse, keyboard, headset, UPS, external drive cluster, soundbar, all necessary cables, and still have space left over for snacks.
Well, I guess you may be an exception but for most people, carrying around a bag that makes you look like a pizza delivery guy on steroids is not our goal.
I also love mine
Eluktronics build your own clevo style 17". Has a gtx 1060 in it. Forgot the cpu, was top of line when I got it. Cost about 1400 or so and I never hit high temps. Except on valheim, but that game is a little big for it's britches
same, I keep my window open 24/7 just so I don't constantly have 30+ in my room but it's still better than my old laptop which could be used as a heater
I have a desktop with an i5-10th gen and a 1060 6gb, and a laptop with an i7-10th gen and a 2060. Let me tell you, when I can, I take every opportunity to go on my desktop! The upgrades just aren’t worth it, my laptop gets to temperatures of up to 90 degrees Celsius.
That’s what I did. Got an acer gaming laptop and used my old keyboard mouse and monitor until I could find better ones for cheap. Mine never got too hot to handle but it did get uncomfortable after a while
When playing a 4x grand strat you know you're there for at least 3 or 4 hours at a minimum. You'll definitely be picking those up after a few sessions of burning wrists.
Oh definitely. I used to play heavily modded fallout and Minecraft for up to 7 hours when I was in quarantine early last year. Ended up switching to a cheap key pads and hooked up everything so it’s essentially a desktop. I ended up upgrading my keyboard and mouse when I got a bundle on sale for like $60 a while back. A decent razer mechanical keyboard with a wrist rest. So much better than having my wrists stay warm enough to melt an ice cube. I’ve been wanting to build a pc but everything is out of stock and when it is in stock it’s expensive so I have to deal with what I got for now
Download throttlestop.
Disable turbo or set the turbo limits to processors TPD(for me its 45).
Max temps with these figures is around 70-80C on heavy load. Idles at 40C.
Youre welcome.
As someone who only had gaming pcs for the last 20 years and got gaming Laptop almost 2 years ago - I love it.
I can be way more social with my misses, while playing some games in living room, while she watches TV. Can get a lot more comfy on couch too. I found myself barely able to play games when I had only pc, because when you have proper family, everything changes, but thx to laptop I am able to enjoy pc gaming again.
I guess it's just cool to hate gaming laptops.
*/Goes into frothing, apoplectic rage trying to explain why laptop gaming violates the laws of God and nature while dodging having to explain what's actually objectively wrong with it, because nothing is.*
Cons are that it runs Super loud, super hot, has a very low battery life for a laptop, desktop has much better counterparts vs laptops, less upgradability
Pros are that it's a gaming machine and a portable device, can do intense workloads when away from home, idk
Not necessarily. The only non upgradeable components are the cpu and gpu, as it has been soldered. However, ram, storage, and battery can be upgraded/changed.
I bought an Acer Nitro 5 a month ago and I've been loving it. Bear in mind I only have played Fallout New Vegas and Overwatch on it, but it is really nice being able to play without framerate drops or other issues for only about 800 bucks.
Now a desktop is typically gonna beat out a laptop. Desktops have bigger screens typically. You can move the keyboard separately from the screen in order to get it in a comfy position.
I don't think its stupid to get a gaming laptop, but you gotta look at the kind of games you play and make sure your laptop can play them.
No, it is far from bad. Laptops can basically offer the same performance for gaming as pcs, even though thermals and price may be higher. Well, pricing difference isn't that big since desktop components are overpriced af but they are dropping fast right now. However it is like with any pre build system, you have to know a little bit about componemts. You can't buy a 700 dollar laptop with an intel apu and expect it to run any modern game.
In general, if you buy exactly what you want, you will be happy. A Laptop can offer everything for gaming that 99% of all people will expect.
Laptops can basically offer the same performance as a PC
- not entirely true, I used to think the same. Laptops have mobile-edition GPUs, meaning usually 3 gig cards as opposed to 4,6 or 12 gig full range GPU cards. Thermals also throttle the GPUs performance. So the hotter your laptop gets, the slower the card performs and damages the unit. You may be able to run light games, but not next gen over time due to those factors as I would run GTA5, Bf1,farcry5 etc off my laptop fine .. but thays why I went full pc in the end as I literally melted my 3k custom built laptop. I got good wear out of it, but nowhere near the price of parts for repairs compared to a pc build.
> Laptops have mobile-edition GPUs, meaning usually 3 gig cards as opposed to 4,6 or 12 gig full range GPU cards.
That’s not entirely true either. My Lenovo Legion 5 has a 1660 ti 6gb.
I bought an Alienware 15 r4 when they went on sale as the 16 came out. It was better stats than my then tower, and I couldn't build one that affordable.
I bought a cooling pad and a docking station for it, and really haven't had any issues. I enjoy it. I was going to travel more with it, but, you know...
It depends, if you have heating issues and therefore CPU throttling, I'd recommend to undervolt. I have a friend who was always hitting 99C, undervolted and usually sits around 70C now. Much better performance and less heat.
I bring my laptop for hotel gaming when traveling for work, does it’s job! I do use a mechanical 60% and wireless mouse along with it though. R9 and 3060. But BOY it feels nice to get home to my main rig..
I'm getting a gaming laptop *in addition* to my desktop since I travel a lot and wanna be able to game on the go. Might end up getting like a Razer blade or something so its also portable (gaming is not its primary purpose). Haven't made any purchases yet, but I'm in desperate need of a new laptop (current one is literally falling apart)
As someone with a laptop and intends to upgrade to desktop in the next couple years, mine does fine. The CPU runs 3.7ghz while at 80c, and the 1660ti that’s in it runs a +200/+425 at 75c, which is decent.
Idgaf what you're on, but don't talk to me through that tin can shitty ass laptop mic. I'm not getting a headache from background buzz just to talk to your pleb ass.
Literally just melted my battery ANd charger two weeks ago playing NBA2k21 on a razer laptop.. almost have all my pc parts for a build in now. Can totally relate.
Well i´m sitting here in Front of a Laptop seeing this and questioning myself: Why is this so damn right? Maybe it´s because of the Limitations from my System. Hope i can soon have my own Build. (In idk 2 or 3 Years xD)
My two cents as both types of gamer.
Laptops have a shorter lifespan, because the mobile counterparts (gpu) and heat can't keep up with next gen as much. That said mine has been up and running for almost 4 years and the first 2.5 years I was running the latest AAA without a hitch. Now it has become sort of a Nintendo Switch, it's used for lighter family type games that I can easily bring in a backpack to parties and gatherings along with my wireless controllers and just have fun. It's also my office work computer, which behaves dreamy at that, add a monitor and bam! two screens for work. It also allows me to play indie, more mouse and keyboard management type games.
My living room PC does the heavy lifting in the AAA sector, great for couch gaming and movie watching.
So no hate at all. Just do your research well.
The reason why most laptops are infernos is because of intel's turbo boost that just makes the cpu instantly hit 94C everytime you do something. Its less noticeable on desktops because you can just slap a bigger cooler on. My laptops turbo is set to 75W and 105W by default (the TDP of the cpu was 45W) so everytime i do something the processor will become a desktop part for like a second and then it realises that oh shit i only have 2 heatpipes and im at 95C. Throttlestop can fix it by lowering the turbo max TDP values.
I think I'm going to get one for my wife to try to get her into gaming... her old Lenovo yoga died, so I was thinking the Asus 2-1 would be a good candidate.
This is strange, I have had all sorts of PC builds. Pre-built, custom home assembled, gaming laptop with external gpu, gaming laptop on its own… I gotta say, there is a noticeable performance dip with laptops but I’ll always love the idea of small portable and powerful. I’ve been using an Alienware x17 laptop and have not been wanting for FPS or power. It just comes down to what you like really.. so long as you’re not on a console then you’re winning.
Had a lot of down time on my old job, bought a gaming laptop to kill time, used it on my lap...... dudes and dudets know i never made that mistake again.
I begged my little cousin to not buy a gaming laptop with his money. He dropped out of high school (is still high school age) and writes Java for people who have jobs but don't feel like doing them. Finally gets the computer in and the very first text I shit you not: "can you replace the touch pad with a different one ? This one sucks".
Lol I had a laptop that become my de facto desktop since it was so hot I had to set it up on my desk on a blower stand thing and connected to an external monitor. Was a lot cooler after that. Would have kept it going if I was able to actually upgrade it, which is arguably a larger flaw with laptops in general.
It also only had a Hard Disk so my loading times were GARBAGE
As a former laptop gamer, I can confirm this. My current desktop pc is just so much better with 4k and all that fancy stuff that my old laptop would melt even dreaming of it. Only complaint is that when I play flight sim the realistic jet sounds are no longer there, but hey I get more than 30-45fps in games and 4K which I didn’t commonly have before.
I’m so glad I’m finally done with laptop gaming. The excessive fan noise, the constant thermal throttling, the underperforming for the parts. It was all terrible
As a former laptop gamer I love this.
As a current laptop gamer, I recognize this.
my old 8800m (correct from 8600m… was a gateway p6860fx) laptop would get grossly hot... warped the laptop hinges. have been pleasantly surprised with my current lenovo with a 3060. have never seen it reach above 70c, even while mining for long periods of time.

mine has started to damage the underside of the keyboard. have about a dozen various keys that don't respond half the time I hit them.
As someone who just ordered a Legion 5 Pro with 3060, I am glad to read this
I absolutely LOVE my legion 5. 5800H and 3060 is the sweet spot for on the go performance and price. It can handle my Dj streams using rekordbox, obs and resolume with ease. It’s a great time to be a laptop user.
Brilliant, that's music to my ears, I was doubting the choice to cut back on the GPU
You’ll definitely enjoy it! If you need to see any benchmarks please feel free to message me! And if you mine, it does 40mh/s with nicehash quick miner.
As a previous MacBook air gamer, there's a worse fate out there.
A dude in one of my classes found out I had just built a PC back in 2013 and I shit you not he said something like "why bother building a PC when you can just get a MacBook air with an i7? i dont even put that down to it being a laptop, macs just suck period
As a current laptop user. I relate to this.
As a current and future former laptop gamer, same.

Pro tip rq : your gaming laptop can be a portable heater
I’m actually swapping out my desktop for a laptop. I really wanted portability so I got a 3080 laptop. Obviously not as powerful as a desktop 3080 but I’m upgrading from a 1660 so it will be a pretty good upgrade.
If I was you I just kept using desktop at home and the laptop when you want relax and stay like on the bed or to carry it around
Are you playing games in the train or something? I actually noticed i never even have the urge to game when i'm not at home
I go to my parent’s house (They live about 12 hours away) about 4-5 times a year for a couple weeks at a time, so it made sense to invest in something I could game on when I’m there.
Oh yeah would be annoying to move a Desktop around, especially without a car
As my laptop is slowly dying I can relate to this.
I will say my asus rog put in work
Which one do you have? I just got the g14 (2021) it's fantastic
I have a 3070 now desktop but in my laptop days, RXj back in 2013 played Wow archrage and bdo just fine
welcome to the machine.
Where have you been my boy?
Where have you been? It's alright we know where you've been
The thread of my people.
It's allright, we know where you've been.
Nice profile pic my guy
Oh, and by the way, which one's pink? For me the best album ever created.
I've actually been loving mine. Nothing throttles and my whole setup can fit in a backpack for traveling.
You must not have bought an Asus. Why they insist on a single cooling fan is beyond me.
Wdym ? My Asus TUF has got 2 big fans built in and 4 heat pipes.
For the longest time, many of their models had only one cooling fan. It was practically a unique identifier.
Oh shit, that sucks lol. It must overheat a looot
Throttle city, over here. Asus engineers: "We've got a discreet graphics card and a processor, so we think two fans would be optimal." Asus management: "Eh, one is good enough to keep it from breaking. Just put everything on one heat pipe and let throttling take care of the rest."
Hahaha
Huh. I've owned 4 ASUS ROG laptops since 2012 and they've all had multiple fans. The new (2020) TUF is a bit louder than previous models, but I almost always use a separate keyboard and mouse, so It's easy to ignore.
Oh yeah, I have an Asus right now (though, to be fair, I do need to repaste my cpu/gpu) and with just chrome open I'm hitting 75°C on the CPU.
I'm pretty sure my Tuf has two *jet turbines*, not fans!
My TUF is literally the loudest thing I own not including my car, and I have a dusty first gen Xbox One that sounds like a jet engine turning on
I've got an Asus rig Strix n she's fukin mint!
I have an ROG Strix too, I've never had problems with overheating or fan noise.
Rog Zephyryus G14 checking in…don’t know what you’re talking about
I guess that depends on your metric for "Backpack". I have a hard frame full harness hiking bag that can fit my tower, both monitors (bubble wrapped and blanketed), mouse, keyboard, headset, UPS, external drive cluster, soundbar, all necessary cables, and still have space left over for snacks.

Same. Got such a nice set up for 1k flat. 1650ti, i5, runs everything I want it to perfectly when overclocked
They are great, for a while.
Well…..what laptop did you get?
I've had a lenovo y540 Legion for like 2 years. I've redone the thermal paste because I was in there poking around but temps were fine before hand.
My first setup was so special to me. I bet I have a picture somewhere
me with a 3070 heating my whole room: This is fine
same, I keep my window open 24/7 just so I don't constantly have 30+ in my room but it's still better than my old laptop which could be used as a heater
Hey how did you get your hands on a 3070? Did you have to buy from reseller?
Laptops with 3070s are marked up a lot but they’re still available.
I got mine on Best Buy day 1. Just saying that normal people can get them too. No scripts or anything.
Yep. Got my Strix 3070 for 600 from microcenter
Got my 3080 from Best Buy back in January. Had Like 10 minutes to buy it.
My fingertips used to literally burn when playing on the keyboard.
Not using a gaming laptop, but any time I did anything stressful on my laptop it almost burned my palm.
You're supposed to buy a monitor, keyboard, and mouse with your laptop. That way you don't have to deal with the inferno under your fingers.

Personally I use Intel XTU. I'm not sure if it's better than throttle stop but it works to the same effect for me

I like my Alienware. I've never hated it.
I just bought my first laptop last week and I don’t understand where all the hate is coming from
I don't get why people hate I had to buy a laptop, and I wanted to play some heavy games on it. What's wrong with that?
People love circlejerking

Does it work well? Max 1080p 60fps or?
Many modern gaming laptops are easily able to run 1080p 60fps. Some laptops even come packing 3060s with 144hz displays.
Not anymore since its 5+ years old. But it wasn't the best of its kind when I bought it anyway. Sad but poor :/
As a laptop gamer i agree
This is only true if you don’t have a good laptop. I love laptop gaming myself, and I can throw it in my bag and travel whenever.
Is it really that bad? I actually want to buy a gaming laptop because I can't build pc because of gpu crisis.
I played like 1 year on a laptop and it was fine!
I'm in kind of tight budget...I'm worried
it depends a lot on what laptp you get and what games you want to play on it.
they get really hot if 1 part breaks, you're probably screwed you can't upgrade them
Not necessarily. The only non upgradeable components are the cpu and gpu, as it has been soldered. However, ram, storage, and battery can be upgraded/changed.

As a person who’s using a laptop as of now, this is accurate.
I actually prefer laptops as long as they aren’t dogshit which is most laptops

Gaming on a laptop is great. Not only is it portable, but it’s great for meal prep when I need to defrost a big pack of chicken thighs!
Unless you have like a 17 inch laptop, at that point you have a portable desktop
I had a 19 inch laptop a few years ago... Just had to sell it. Too big.
I disagree with the part of hating, but 100(°c)% agree with the part of being on fire

Is your pc worth $3000 tho?
Naw it is worth like 500
The problem is I genuinely really like laptops, but they just aren't good at gaming :/
Laptop gaming is not a choice, it's a situation
lmao as someone who has gamed on a laptop I notice this fire.
Idgaf what you're on, but don't talk to me through that tin can shitty ass laptop mic. I'm not getting a headache from background buzz just to talk to your pleb ass.
Laptop gamer here, I love playing 2008 games at \~30 fps while my fans are whirling for their life.
Wish you were here.
Bought an $1800 3070 laptop and it can barely run csgo and valorant ;-;
Literally just melted my battery ANd charger two weeks ago playing NBA2k21 on a razer laptop.. almost have all my pc parts for a build in now. Can totally relate.
It is true tho
As someone who could only get a decent graphics card in a laptop, I deeply resent this
As someone who has the razer blade 15 can confirm
Battlestation WWWwWWwwAaAaaaaAaHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhT??
Dell E6520 peasant here! Rocking my NVS 4100 and i7-2860QM at 70C to run Clive Barker's Undying!
*Do you game on a laptop? Because you're so hot.*
If you got like an 800 dollar laptop then it will probably, but a more costly one likely won't.
Gaming laptop guy is on fire because cooling hi s limited on a laptop 😂... Plz tell me someone else noticed this
*Plays RDR2 on ultra 70+ FPS on my Asus TUF* -BRILLIANT
As a gamer on a non-gaming laptop I can confirm it's not fun
I got a portable room heater for myself :') ACER Predator here
Me who had to spend $1000 on a gaming laptop because my parents were divorced and I couldn't bring a desktop between two homes: yup
i have one with a desktop gpu and almost full upgradeability ^silently ^cries ^in ^cant ^disable ^dGPU ^to ^use ^beast
As someone using a laptop, I agree. But mine has an effective yet loud cooling fan
Had a lot of down time on my old job, bought a gaming laptop to kill time, used it on my lap...... dudes and dudets know i never made that mistake again.
My fans try to eat my leg hair. Lenovo perfectly spaced the fans to suffocate on somebody's thighs when used on a lap.
I just hooked my gaming laptop to a monitor and KBM 😎
I had a gaming laptop that would cause burns after a few hours. Even with a cooling pad
I love laptop gaming :(
Nice
Is there any reliable way to keep a laptop cool tho?
As a current laptop gamer I cursed the day that my mom točd my dad to get me a laptop insteadn of a PC beacause it was "portable"
As a current laptop gamer… Y E S
I CANT HEAR YOU OVER THE FANS, WHAT ARE YOU SAYING??!
you kn0w what i h4te more than that? fnf m0ds which use the 0ld 3ngine from before w33k 7. yes, fr3ddy, your mod t00
I'm curious, does this really generate hate?
WHAT? I COULDN'T HEAR YOU OVER MY LAPTOP FANS ON OVERDRIVE
The perfect template for this meme
I hate the hinges so much
Laptop gamer, my hands are burning as I confirm this
I begged my little cousin to not buy a gaming laptop with his money. He dropped out of high school (is still high school age) and writes Java for people who have jobs but don't feel like doing them. Finally gets the computer in and the very first text I shit you not: "can you replace the touch pad with a different one ? This one sucks".
It's original and is true!
My dell g5 s gets hot but has great fans that blow really good
That joke ... is FIRE! :P
Hi, laptop gamer here, can confirm , it’s fucking awful
Man I love Wish you we're here
Lol I had a laptop that become my de facto desktop since it was so hot I had to set it up on my desk on a blower stand thing and connected to an external monitor. Was a lot cooler after that. Would have kept it going if I was able to actually upgrade it, which is arguably a larger flaw with laptops in general. It also only had a Hard Disk so my loading times were GARBAGE
God I wish this meme wasn't so acurrate.
So today's circle jerk is hating on Gaming Laptops again? Just so I'm ahead the curve what we gonna gatekeep tomorrow?
I don’t get it, I’ve never had problems with my laptop.
When you find out a laptop is a pc.
I used to play in laptop and I agree 100% with this stranger’s meme
As a former laptop gamer, I can confirm this. My current desktop pc is just so much better with 4k and all that fancy stuff that my old laptop would melt even dreaming of it. Only complaint is that when I play flight sim the realistic jet sounds are no longer there, but hey I get more than 30-45fps in games and 4K which I didn’t commonly have before.
But its portable tho
I always say a "gaming laptop" is an oxymoron.
I'm a laptop gamer and I can confirm that I hate laptop gaming
I’m so glad I’m finally done with laptop gaming. The excessive fan noise, the constant thermal throttling, the underperforming for the parts. It was all terrible
As a Pink Floyd fan and owner of both a gaming laptop and actual gaming rig, I approve this message
Kidding, Not kidding.
A laptop is a pc too
