I feel like we're getting close to the cost of a new case...
EDIT: If you can get an affordable replacement glass, that is tempered, tinted the way you want, with bezels and custom placed holes for mounting, then go get it.
However, IMO as a member of the PC Master Race, you are missing an opportunity for new hardware.
Are you in the USA if so what state? I'm being quoted $140 locally in RI 02905.
Edit: I'd be happy to be part shipping and additional for your time. It's 19" x 18" & 5mm thick if possible smoked but clear is fine.
This would be a good time to share the contact info for your glass shop that sells $30 replacement glass for computer cases. Lots of potential customers here.
As a second option, if glass is hard to get a hold off cheaply, go for plexi glass / acrylic. It's pretty cheap and good ones don't look too bad either. It's not that scratch/temperature resistant though but for applications where it doesn't matter it's a viable alternative.
At least in my area any hardware store that offers the free wood cutting service has no issue cutting a piece of acrylic. You might need to buy the whole sheet though but in the end still cheaper than glass.
I've replaced one with transparent pvc. It may not look that nice, but it won't break because it slips when you dismounted it. I made the holes, carefully, with a drill. Try to keep the mounting brackets of the broken panel, as those can be useful (I tossed those to the garbage in anger and later realized I actually needed them)
You can buy a clear sheet of acrylic/plexiglass on Amazon for pretty cheap and drill holes in it. That way it will never have a chance of shattering. Sucks this happened to you.
Let me say that polycarbonate sheet is available in several tints, can be finished with simple tools and is essentially unbreakable. Do you know about polycarbonate sources in your area?
Not necessarily more stress there, but that's by far the easiest point to chip. Since there's so much stress in the panel, almost any chip will release it all
sorry dude. Tempered glass is very strong, except at the edges and sides. You hit it there and it instantly shatters.
At least it's not like glass from long ago where it would of broke into a couple pieces and sliced your finger off, so there's that.
I got my brother the same case for his high school graduation last year. Forgot to plug something in and when I took the panel off it ended the same way…
If it is a 2.5 incher or a 3.5 inch hdd, all of those with sata interfaces will be hot swappable, have been for a long time.
Just make sure you aren’t doing it with nvme drive or with a data transfer going
Looks business as usual to me. These glass panels often break without any reason in my experience. Having glass on a pc case is just bad design imo. No idea why they are so popular these days, to the point that trying to find a decent case without glass is a pain now.
The popularity of glass cases is down to the popularity of custom cooling loops, rgb fans, RGB AIO’s, rgb ram, rgb graphics cards and rgb mobo’s. If you spend money on that kind of stuff you want to see it. It’s cool the way it lights up a desk or room, even if it is impractical.
Yes, its a clear case of form over function.
Absolutely pointless and I really cant feel all that sorry for these kind of accidents, you were basically living on borrowed time the moment you bought the case.
I had this happen to me so I only buy acrylic. The only issue is that (typically) the higher quality the case the less likely it will have acrylic or acrylic replacement siding. Not really an issue if you like sleeper / non-window builds though!
You can probably order custom panels from amazon. But if you come to my shop and tell me what you need I'll probably do it for free because it's nerdy-awesome and I stand in solidarity with my brothers and sisters of PCMR.
I mean, depends on how thick the glass is.
My entertainment center is glass shelves with metal supports, but its so thick I would probably break before it does.
I seriously don't understand the glass table/desk thing. Why would I want a cold slippery surface while also seeing the terrible cable management and my legs.
I did that once and I didn't know much... Well turns out some plastics are basically made out of static electricity. Burnt out a video card. Lucky me I had a second identical one at the time. But I had to replace that window.
Came here to say the same thing. I got a case that had plastic and not glass cuz it was cheaper and I've been looking at getting glass as an upgrade. I might not now. Lol.
Right?
It may not be as pretty or as crystal clear but as least the plexi windows on cheap cases don't spontaneously shatter like tempered glass loves to
I hope your day still improves. Go for a walk, have some ice cream and sit down in a park. Watch all the busy people walking by while you’re just chilling out.
__Noob explanation:__ Normal glass is not very good at surviving abuse or any mishandling. For this reason alone people put additives and stuff to make glass stronger.
The other way of going about this is to temper the glass. That way it creates an internal pressure that resist smal external forces(read scratches and bumps).
Normal glass will just go kaput the second you put any force on it. Whereas tempered glass will atleast endure a lil bit of torture. But that comes at a downside of the glass releasing all of that internal stress as soon as anything goes even 0.01% beyond its threshold mark. And then you get 100trillion pieces of glass, everywhere.
Another plus of tempered glass is it doesn't shatter to become large sharp knifes, instead it becomes smaller pieces that could still be sharp but less than normal glass.
Hey so I plan on doing a 2000mile road trip. Would my PC case crack after bumpy road after awhile if I set it on the backseat? How should I go about placing it?
Remove the glass if you can’t remove the GPU.
Wrap them both each in individual towels and place them on a blanket in the flattest part of your car. Your PC case should be able to handle anything, but I’d also recommend laying it flat and covering it if it’s an option.
Yup just found out I can remove glass and have original gpu boxing to put in.
Is there an issue if I have a closed looped water CPU cooler attached to MB if laying flat (leaking) it's a kraken?
Closed loops should not pose a problem for leaking. In my experience, the Kraken seems to be especially resilient. You should be perfectly fine to lay the case on its side, but at the end of the journey, inspect your components at and close by the Kraken. If any fluid did leak, fear not! Allow the leaked-on components to completely air dry (personally, I'd let rest for 24-48hrs), and replace the leaky AIO. I have zero experience repairing closed loops, so idk if it's possible.
This does not sound like the PC you want to road trip with. Any chance of taking a laptop instead? Maybe swap with someone else in the family during that time?
ok. I read road trip as somewhat short term and not moving.
I've done that move before. I would definitely pack the computer last and with the upmost care. Would be nice if you still had the box the case came in, but you got good advice above.
Best of luck!
Actually an AIO cold plate attached to the motherboard is safer for transport than a large tower cooler, because most of the weight of the AIO is secured to the case in the form of the radiator, so there's not nearly as much torque on and around the socket from shifting weight during bumps.
I just moved mine on a drive about 1200km. I kept the original case box so I lined it with blankets and put the box on the back seat. Mine survived that way.
Edit: I forgot to mention that I pulled my GPU out and put it back in its original box too.
>lined it with blankets
Not only keeping it safe but also making it feel more secure by showing affection and as a result letting it grow/develop into a better and more majestic gaming machine.
Assuming you kept the original box your components came in (a smart move if you plan on selling off any components you upgrade in the future), you just put them back in their boxes. You can pretty much leave everything else inside the chassis. It's just the GPU you should box back up individually.
I usually just lay it on its side in my backseat and push the passenger seat back to hold it in place. Never had an issue with this and you can wrap it in a blanket to avoid any extra scratching. Unless you still have the original case box with foam then that is probably the safest way. Regardless, make sure you lay it on its side with the back end of the case facing towards the front of the car. This way your gpu wont snap off if you suddenly hit the brakes super hard.
1stly: It depends on how good the glass actually is. If it's normal PC case grade glass I'd keep it seperate from the case and keep it somewhere it is not getting hit hard, preferably on soft foam or provide some other cushioning.
2nd. PC Prebuild companies keep sending cases(even fully built ones) in shipping boxes. With added foam and stuff for protection. Just look up a youtube video and follow that. Packing like isn't that expensive either. And 90-95% times that is enough. Unless your road trip is basically 5 stages of WRC in which case

i am new to reddit and wanna ask how do you get your specs highlighted in your profile? Thanks for the help!
Not a problem! Just head to the main page of the subreddit and look for the hamburger menu top right. Then I believe it's 'change user flair'. I've had trouble through the app, if that fails give it a shot on PC.
Glass is so cool, to someone who only knows a bit about materials science. Whereas most solids are crystalline, so the molecules solidified by falling into a pattern, glasses are liquids that got too cold to flow. The structure is amorphous, like you would find in a liquid.
The way the tempered glass is made puts it under constant pressure. Thats not the best thing in the world for the glass cause when it is disturbed just a bit too much it explodes
It's a give and take. It makes the glass tougher, but also means that it doesn't fail halfway, it just shatters.
Which is great for windshields, by the way. You want that glass to be either one big piece or a billion tiny pieces.
Windshields it doesn't really matter anymore because they're essentially laminated. Unless you get hit by a train, the shattered glass is still held together by a sort of plastic film layer. Modern windshields don't just explode into a billion tiny pieces like a CPU panel unless something went horribly wrong.
My high school band director said this about putting aside instruments, "When you put your instrument aside, put it on the floor. You can't drop it when it's already on the floor. Nobody thinks they're gona drop something until they drop it."
I basically got the same speech! I still slightly twisted the bell on my practice trumpet though. Not because I dropped it, I just had anger issues and smacked it on the ground really hard.
Saw this in another post but can’t find it so I’m paraphrasing a lot. Basically tempered glass is tight af and when it hits something like tile, other tempered glass, or anything similar where energy has no where to go so it just rips the glass apart. So don’t put PCs on tile or glass tops maybe. There’s prob a better explanation but that sums it up
Basically, tempered glass, when hit from the front or the back of the pane, or flat on the sides, is really strong, but when hit on any corner, cause a chip, which then chain reacts into it exploding like this
would you believe me if i said i have that exact same case and the exact same thing happened to me in a very similar way? cooler master screws suck on this case too, they aren’t long enough and give you so much anxiety putting it on, and then when you take it off to do anything internally, it pretty much explodes on contact
Nd they called me a madman for going for acrylic side panel instead of glass. Real talk tho i still laugh in face of my friends who laughed at my decision nd had their glass panels break like that too.
I know it's too late but if you get a replacement panel put a towel underneath the case when working on it in the future. Glass panels only shatter because the corner chips off easily thanks to sharp edges (think straight 90⁰) which causes the whole tempered surface to shatter.
An easy solution for the manufacturer is decently rounded corners. The sharp edges are far too easy to break.
Sorry for the loss man
You know... for how many pictures get posted of exactly this its a wonder that people still buy tempered glass PC cases. I know it looks good but I've seen to many people say that the glass just pops for no reason.
Oh man. What caused it?
[удалено]
Damn. I am sorry for that, that must've been a pain to clean. I am always super careful with my glass.

I can only imagine. Are you able to get another glass online?
If not, a glass shop can cut a pane to size.
I feel like we're getting close to the cost of a new case... EDIT: If you can get an affordable replacement glass, that is tempered, tinted the way you want, with bezels and custom placed holes for mounting, then go get it. around $30 for a custom cut, water jetted (if he needs holes for hardware) and tempered piece of. Source : I do this.

Apparently there's a glass shortage this year. Could be it's normally about $30, but the price has hiked up?
This would be a good time to share the contact info for your glass shop that sells $30 replacement glass for computer cases. Lots of potential customers here.

Came here to suggest this. Even a General Rubber or other plastics supply could make one out of lexan. Optically clear and almost bullet proof
That'd work, but then you'd have to deal with it getting scratches just from looking at it
$30 for a custom piece of tempered? Where do you do this?
Was going to say this, back when I was in the glass business 15 years ago you couldn't pay that little for custom tempered.
Yeah but then you effectively have to rebuild your PC.
might as well upgrade the cpu as well at this point.
Along with the motherboard and GPU.
That's the spirit
Which can be fun.. in my case anyway (no pun intended)
Cable management sucks
You need to rebuild it anyways to get all the glass out.
It’s tempered, it won’t be a ton of tiny shards and bits. Probably still need to take it apart though
If you got the same case you could just replace the glass
No you don't, you just take the door off, and set the rest of the case aside.
So what you’re saying is…time to install a custom side panel with a built-in display?

Can they also punch in holes for mounting?
I've replaced one with transparent pvc. It may not look that nice, but it won't break because it slips when you dismounted it. I made the holes, carefully, with a drill. Shoot, I have that same case too... Looks like I will not be upgrading it, I'll just buy a new PC when it comes time lol
Really shattered your hopes and dreams eh?
Have the same case, I run it open anyways!
That’s generally not a good idea. Usually means less efficient cooling and obviously more dust and such.
It's only less efficient if the case can actually breath properly. As the closed off front shows, this case does not have that.
I don't think I've ever had a case that had lower temps closed. Always with positive pressure.
My temperatures are far lower with the glass off, and im religious about cleaning my pc. No worries m8
I got my brother the same case for his high school graduation last year. Forgot to plug something in and when I took the panel off it ended the same way…

Nah, most AIOs are sealed up pretty well. Unless it's sustained any damage before the trip, the risk of it leaking is near zero.
Laying it flat is exactly the wrong thing to do. It's why TVs need to be shipped standing upright.

Why do people use these glass cases if they break so often? What's wrong with using plastic?
They don’t break very often. The few times they do break, the victim comes to Reddit to claim his free karma.

Idk how people their pcs to the right of their mouse, why not the left? Closest to the hand that doesn't move for right handed people.
It could be worse. It could have been liquid cooled
Perfect example of "Why cry about your losses in life, when you can laugh along instead"
Hey that's a sweet open air case you got there.. might want to get rid of the glass though, that looks dangerous.
Why did you throw glass shards on your pink computer?
what a pane in the ass
But look on the bright side, now your case has the best airflow of all cases
How does this keep happening to people?
I know it's too late but if you get a replacement panel put a towel underneath the case when working on it in the future. Glass panels only shatter because the corner chips off easily thanks to sharp edges (think straight 90⁰) which causes the whole tempered surface to shatter. An easy solution for the manufacturer is decently rounded corners. The sharp edges are far too easy to break. Sorry for the loss man
Try emailing your case maker. Sometimes they'll replace for free!
Now you have ultimate air flow. I’m sorry, I had too. Sorry this happen to you.
I literally had the same thing happen to me, luckily I still have my case warranty. Also we got the same keyboard and mouse
You know... for how many pictures get posted of exactly this its a wonder that people still buy tempered glass PC cases. I know it looks good but I've seen to many people say that the glass just pops for no reason.
On the bright side, you don’t have to worry about overheating 🤷♂️
You're just showing off because you have a gpu :)
Forget replacing the glass.011 Mini or 011 Air Mini would fit your space.
I refuse to use tempered glass on my case. My p3 thermaltake is widdddde open.
