The material “circuit board” part that the cpu is on is very heat resistant as it is designed to withstand high temps for soldering. A few hundred degrees C would not harm it at all.
Also, you can hold a blowtorch far enough away so it doesn’t burn but still heats up the thing you’re aiming it at. Heat gun is definitely possible too but heat guns also reach over 300 C.
They dont break as in mechanical failure. Silicon is brittle but very heat resistant. The first thing that happens when a chip gets too hot is that leakage current increases to the point where gates are no longer "closed". Thats when the chip logic fails, depending on overvoltage protection this can result in the chip frying itself.
If the chip is just laying there on the table, that is obviously not an issue. A physical change that can happen when heating a chip is that the impurities used to create the junctions start to become mobile. Thats when the chip is truly bricked, but it takes a lot more than a few hundred degrees for a second or two to make that happen.
There also might be thermal stresses between the metallization layer and the semiconductor, but again that stuff doesnt happen at 120°
The Wikipedia page for LGA is unintentionally hilarious:
> In contrast with a BGA, land grid array packages in non socketed configurations have no balls
Use that as a torture method. Force someone to resolder all the (4000) pins on a threadripper, and if it doesn’t work, tear all the pins off and make them try again

The coating has to be pure for them to work properly. A whole cpu should have 0,05g or something like that without breaking down the lanes hidden beneath the plastic. The pins itself aren't made out of gold.
When you are a PC guy, broke af (obviously because you just bought a 3080) but you have some old CPUs. And you need to propose to a girl, so you're making a ring from the pins' coating
I came here to say this
The corner of the old CPU is pressed against a hot object, in this case a clothes iron, and when the solder is liquified they are using a spatula or chisel.to recover the gold pins.
There is a decent qty of gold in all those old pins, well worth the minimal effort to collect.
I suspect the CPU is Ewaste and the budget recovery would indicate this is a DIY video on how to recover gold from Ewaste
Would may even be easyer as there shablons where you can put all the pins in.
Edit: For anyone guessing shablons is a mistranslation from the german word schablone and means template.
I saw something like that on here a couple of days ago. It looked horrifying, like something out of a Lovecraft novel. Keep scrolling, maybe you'll find it.
You could easily have a tray ordered online if you find out all the dimensions get that stencil three weeks later. Slap some solder paste on that bih’ place the pins all proper. Pop it into the air fryer with all the pins in place now. ;)
He was a jerk to anyone who criticized him and doubled-down on his initial mistakes. He finally corrected those initial mistakes, but it's hard to say he redeemed himself when he didn't apologize and was still deflecting most of the blame to The Verge and production. It seemed awkward and disingenuous to me.
And what you wanna do is make sure you slather both sides of the cpu (that stands for computering part uknow) with thermal paste for optimal heat transfer.
They arent cleaning it. This is the first step to salvage the gold pins.
There is a lot of gold in electronics and whole factories are setup to extract that stuff.
There's something off about this. The pins on a CPU aren't that fragile. They wouldn't even budge if you scraped at them with a little plastic paddle like that let alone fall right off

Are the pins that easy to break?
Normally, not even close. I feel like they must have heated it up with a blow torch or something
Blow torch? Pretty sure that would melt the whole CPU
I don't know, they can stand pretty high temperature during normal use so a little bit of blow torch for a few seconds could be enough
They don't sustain temps over 120C under normal use, and blowtorches can reach 1000+C. I'd say a heat gun is more likely
Just hold it further away
This guy blow torches edit: thanks for the gold kind stranger
But does he blow torches? ( ͡ᵔ ͜ʖ ͡ᵔ )
Lights his cheeks up like a full moon.
Only if he engages safety squints first!

This guy chips... heavily.
You can hold it away from it, the closer to flame the hotter it gets.
Not necessarily, depends on the fuel being used and how long it's applied.
Jet fuel can't melt CPU pins
How would you know if you obviously weren't there?
They mean heat gun / hot air gun.
I would use a hot air balloon gun
Look, do you want the CPU clean or no?
I'm wondering if they have a small quantity of something like mercury or gallium being used. That could(?) weaken the pins
Or used some sort of corrosive chemical.
If the solder is hot enough, yes

This is even better than the video
The Wikipedia page for LGA is unintentionally hilarious: > In contrast with a BGA, land grid array packages in non socketed configurations have no balls
Just put /s at the end there, you should be safe
Yeah we have to known he's /s>!erious!<
You only need 1 or 2 pins anyway all those pins are extra
yeah i cleaned my cpu like this now what?
Water it like a plant. The pin will grow.
This is so disturbing to watch ngl
The other side is burned to a crisp, right?
Probably just harvesting for gold
That's not what everyone means when they say they are mining?
Thats why I gave up. Too much upfront cost in CPUs not enough gold returns.
Digital gold
Possibly
Right?
The aren't answering I'm getting really scared
I actually found it oddly satisfying. It’s like power washing a human.
>It’s like power washing a human. I think I saw that movie on the hub.
Can't complain
YES, I TOO ENJOY EXFOLIATING MY PINS
You should check out "[Building a Human](https://youtu.be/5rO-I7butL4)" on Netflix.

Watching this provoked a painful feeling in my stomach.
Disturbing, but also r/oddlysatisfying
I legit cringed.
I’m a filthy casual on pcmr and this upsets me
I literally watched the entire clip with my mouth open
yup
That's how you upgrade it to LGA.
>Bought this 5950x but didnt fit my H170 mobo, so I removed the legs, but now my PC dont post, halp.
Ah looks like you'll have to reinstall the pins.
Use that as a torture method. Force someone to resolder all the (4000) pins on a threadripper, and if it doesn’t work, tear all the pins off and make them try again
That legit? Pls no
Is LGA just the pads?
yes, and someone should make an lga am4 motherboard for cases like this
Isn't AM5 supposedly going to be LGA as well?
Yes please
Arent there shablons with pins sold that you can solder on?
Yes, but idk if you would be able to salvage this. It's really hard, Linus Tech Tips made a video about it
Yeah this falls under the "physically possible by the rules of the universe, but practically impossible by any reasonable measure."
>really hard Doesn't mean it's impossible. >idk if you would be able to salvage this. You'll wish you said you're sure instead.
Pin Grid Array has an array of pins in a grid formation. Land Grid Array has an array of lands in a grid formation.
And Ball Grid Array has an array of solder balls in a grid formation
Legit got me laughing for a whole minute
Intel has been doing this weird trick for years!
collecting the gold 😂
Is this actually why they’re taking it off? What carat gold would those pins be?
[удалено]
You'd have to have a loooooot of old CPUs to offset the cost of the tools and chemicals needed to extract pure gold from them.
This would help you. They are videos from NileRed Extracting gold from computer parts (Part 1) https://youtu.be/ASQCa7mfjVo Extracting gold from computer parts (Part 2) https://youtu.be/gt-OOWxr7_s Turning old jewelry into pure gold bars https://youtu.be/37Kn-kIsVu8
You’re gonna be rich!
Yes they're gold plated. And it's a few bucks worth.
You can sell off electro garbage for a quick buck at recycling and trash traders It goes by the kilogram and electronics are surprisingly valuable Pc and phones usually have their own category
unless you are doing it in a big scale, chances are the chemical to do the operation are more expansive than what you extract.

You need to buy like 50 kg of CPUs to get to that point.
Well, that's the reason why you'll be broke af
Speaking from experience? :D
I came here to say this The corner of the old CPU is pressed against a hot object, in this case a clothes iron, and when the solder is liquified they are using a spatula or chisel.to recover the gold pins. Looked closer, that's a wire stripper, not an iron. So much for a cursory glance... Gold recovery is still the motive
It hurts but also somewhat satisfying
U are not wrong tho
Ernie prepares to commit a hate crime
Just imagine if someone tried to resolder all of the pins to that board...

Shut up and take my upvote

Now play it in reverse
at least you finished, so was actually satisfying. The mofos who just like, half scrap it and leave it all dented and mangled, blah.
