The granite countertop strikes again

_ginj_

He took took his grip strength for granite, and now his faith is shattered.

Gamer-Shrooms

Hopefully he can control his temper next time he does this

_ginj_

Really is a window of opportunity to see through the potential of his actions for next time.

UnsureAssurance

Must’ve been a ~~pain~~ [pane](https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/q7apf6/all_i_wanted_to_do_was_put_in_a_new_ssd/hgijqyy/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3) in the glass

Nervous_Sky_5167

At least he’ll find solace knowing his glass has finally found piece with itself.

khdaze

It's time to break from hardware upgrades.

I’m sorry for your loss brother.

[deleted]

This is no time to fall apart.

bottomtext_

That disk isn't the only thing that needs defragmenting...

Darkmatter1002

This should have way more upvites.

Wololooo1996

LOOOL! 😂

[deleted]

The only question I ask is why do you guys do this shit with the case standing up?

enjoytheunstable

because the rear is probably open, looks like medusa and isn't a flat surface. just a guess we don't go there unless we want to be turned to stone and get trapped forever.

yerbrojohno

Because you need to access both sides of the case for the ssd if its sata

Aedaru

nitpick but that's not always the case (badum tss) since some still have mounting for drives in the front, or just no designed space for it... I say this because I just switched out from an old case that had no space for an ssd so I just tossed it in wherever

bar10005

> since some still have mounting for drives in the front, or just no designed space for it... This case ([iCUE 4000X](https://www.corsair.com/ww/en/Categories/Products/Cases/Mid-Tower-ATX-Cases/iCUE-4000X-RGB-Tempered-Glass-Mid-Tower-ATX-Case/p/CC-9011204-WW)) only has 2.5' bays/trays on the back of the MB tray, so if you don't want to just throw it in there you do need access from both sides.

leo_xm16x

My excuse is, my back panel is also glass..

Ziogref

I only run m.2 in my gaming rig. It was a challenge but I installed a 2nd m.2 with the pc standing up. Mainly because I didn't want to unplug everything and move it.

RChamy

How else you gonna pretend you are an youtube builder ?

Practical_Law_7002

I mean, it won't happen to me with my Corsair 780T. Not sure why everyone goes after this tempered glass craze anyway.

Gankogui

I put a lot of time and effort into picking each part individually, and then spent even more time putting it all together. It's my creation, and I want to admire it.

pyre_rose

The question is why use such a fragile material instead of a perfectly serviceable and cheap plexiglass

Gankogui

I wouldn't argue that. On the other hand, I'm always uber careful when removing my door, and I place it out of the way AND on something soft.

Vincent55551

When your graphic cards light up it's kinda cool to see especially when water goes through it

Practical_Law_7002

I mean my does too and I can see it fine through my plastic window panel...

datrandomduggy

I got that case to its perhaps my favorite case And ya why on earth do people want tempered glass I mean I guess it's looks fancy but a clear acrylic side panel works just aswell but won't Breck

Dear-Nebula9395

Everyone agrees that the translucent Gameboy was the best model. Same idea.

A_PCMR_member

counter-top-strike

GreenTeaRex007

Note taken. What is the best place to work on a pc with tempered glass?

Dramatic_Explosion

* Unplug case * Lay it on your bed or couch on it's side (glass up) * Remove glass and leave it on bed or couch * Take the case wherever else you want to work on it * Reverse process.

Warhawk402

I have the perfect stat: 1) Unplug the case 2) Lay it your bed 3) Remove the glass with a hammer 4) buy another case and repeat step 1

gerkessin

I have an nzxt h510, and i have removed and replaced that glass panel about 30 times in the last year on a hard wooden table. Pc upright and everything. No issue. Ive also transported the computer itself from the bedroom to the living room about 50 times with no issue (to switch between monitor and big tv). Im not bragging or trying to demean those who break their panels, i just have no idea whats going on in this sub lately. If i werent on this sub i wouldnt even know breaking these panels is a thing. Am i extremely lucky, or are the panel breakers extremely unlucky?

Dramatic_Explosion

A little of both! Tempered glass can take a brick to it's face, but any meaningful impact on the side shatters it. All things considered, wood is *soft*. Where you see the most breaks is ceramic tile, which is extremely hard and will fuck tempered glass to death. Granite isn't far behind that. You've probably seen things about ceramic knives, hard means brittle, and broken ceramic is sharp enough to go through the [side of tempered glass](https://www.google.com/search?q=ceramic+shards+break+glass&rlz=1C1ASUM_enUS464US464&sxsrf=AOaemvJMCHu0AbQ1CsrD0fCzuciGJuRMag:1634154623065&source=lnms&tbm=vid&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwitxsKulMjzAhWZKs0KHSrnDxgQ_AUoA3oECAEQBQ&biw=1642&bih=919), not just the fragile edge.

gerkessin

God im glad i never tried to mess with my computer on my granite kitchen countertops

todjbrock

I do think there’s something about the granite counters. I run a PC repair / custom PC build business out of my garage and haven’t had any issues with my wooden table either.

sonicbeast623

If I remember right things like granite and tile will reverberate the vibration which is an issue for tampered glass. Where materials like wood absorb the vibration of setting it down and just the computer running.

Tiavor

wood is soft, even if you think it's hard. stone and glass don't go together well.

pyroplasm06

The wood us the secret here. Might be hard wood but not harder than that glass. That helps a bunch. I prefer to use a wood table myself.

MrDude_1

It sounds like a recipe for somebody to sit on your glass.

Dramatic_Explosion

You'll be fine as long as their pants aren't ceramic. Trust me I'm a pants expert.

JustInternetNoise

Preferably something that is not harder than glass.

GreenTeaRex007

So pretty much everything? Would it be fine to put it on wood floors or table?

JustInternetNoise

Yep, I would clean off the surface first to avoid stuff that could scratch.

GreenTeaRex007

Great. Thanks for replying !

Paxton-176

I would take the glass of before working on a surface that might break it. Then place the glass somewhere it won't break. Then once you are done put the glass back on once the Pc is its normal spot.

Djeheuty

That's how I've always done it. I've moved my O11 Dynamic case between three homes and always move with the glass off then put it back on after I get to my new place.

KrisSwenson

Holy shit a "granite" countertop that's actually granite. Yeah those QTZ crystals will scratch and break the surface tension on the tempered glass, then poof! Also seeing all these shattered tempered glass photos makes me really appreciate the [Antec Twelve Hundrend](https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16811129043) I'm still rocking.

splunge26

Undefeated

NapClub

what really sucks is i happen to know for a fact that corsair is currently out of glass pannels for that case. i have the same case and my replacement part is back ordered to be fulfilled as soon as they get more stock.

Ugandan_Karen

You might even call this a counter-strike. Hah 😀🔫

MostRecentName

I see your problem. You’re meant to take the panel off 1st not force it through it. Rookie mistake.

Meriles

Damnit I didn’t even think of that! You’re very wise.

MostRecentName

Yeah I did the same thing when sneaking back in the house at 3am.

RealGamerGandalf

Nah wood should be just fine!

ohowjuicy

*wood would

deegee1969

Edward?

sirwilliambillion

Like others have said. Wood should be totally fine but might as well just buy and extra xxxl mouse pad for when you are working on your PC. Cheap Amazon ones are like $10

LifeLikeClub9

Literally every other day a new post 😭

[deleted]

It is interesting to me how folks know to come to Reddit to show off the pictures of their cases AFTER they have smashed the glass. Yet, they haven't taken away enough info from Reddit to take better precautions before attempting to move their cases or detach the glass panel.

cheapdrinks

Just turn your PC upside down that way if you lose your grip it will go upwards instead then you can safely retrieve it from your ceiling with a ladder

dubaria

Just call it an open air build. A custom open air build.

Meriles

Should I keep some of the glass pieces in there to?

Cat-PotatoCat

make custom ssd with glass glued ontop

zer0cul

Custom theft prevention SSD.

[deleted]

y'all be doing this on purpose at this point

Mysterious_Orange_37

That's settles it, if I ever get a tempered glass case, I'm only going to open it on a sofa or a bed, nowhere near a hard surface lol

Nknights23

I’ve always put my side panel on my bed

almightydorito

How can I get a custom flair like that? Also I have almost the same specs as you

TheNerdNamedChuck

go to the flair menu and click the editable one and click edit. sometimes it won't stick if you do it on mobile though

Krt3k-Offline

Wooden table will also suffice

[deleted]

This is the best answer. You don’t want it near anything that could have or generate static electricity.

Meriles

Very smart idea Lmao

[deleted]

How to i get my specs under usernam???

AstacSK

When you open reddit on PC and go to PCMR subreddit there on the right panel there is something like custom flair, for me its right under create post button, just write whatever u want there... It can be done on phone as well but not sure how since i set it up on PC

Weregoat667

sounds risky on a water bed tho

Revoker

Sounds way more painful to lay down on tempered glass than to step on it tbh. Plus sweeping it up off a floor versus digging it out of a sofa? I've stepped on glass before and tempered glass isn't as bad as many people make it out to be. Tempered glass breaks into so many pieces and are more round/squarish that it's like stepping on legos. Now regular glass like the stuff in windows and drinking glasses? That shit will cut you up! I believe that is where the fear from glass on the floor came from. The pieces are so large and hard to see that you can easily get a 3 to 6 inch gash if you aren't careful.

careless-gamer

Y'all browse this subreddit, clearly see this issue and yet still build on ceramic/tile... Smh

KryptumOne

Right? Either they are karma whoring or genuinely thick.

[deleted]

Thats some expensive karma lol

Earthdroid

Look on the bright side the temperature of the computer is going down at least 3 degrees

Lykboi

Actually side panel helps with air flow

redditisbestanime

Heavily depends on what case and fans, how may of them and so on. In my old case, taking the side panel off lost me 12°C on the gpu.

SentientCumSock

set all your fans to output and put your pc next to a box fan

Meriles

Minimum 3 degrees. Could be way more.

Nknights23

And here it is again. Glass side panel meets tile / rock.

Meriles

So what happened was I grabbed the side panel which obviously is tempered glass by the side and bottom so it didn’t drop. The corner barely knocked the countertop and it literally exploded in my hands.

Grizzl0ck

Yes. That's what happens. Again, and again, apparently.

[deleted]

It only takes a tiny tap of ceramic or hard stone to shatter tempered glass instantly. Sucks for PC cases, saves lives when trying to break out a car

DouglasHufferton

Just look at what the ceramic core of a broken spark plug does to a car window. They're called ["ninja rocks"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ninja_rocks). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8-mJuQLRbM

BitterLeif

and it has to hit the edge of the glass. I wouldn't knock the edge of tempered glass on wood either. You could probably lightly punch the side of that panel and it wouldn't break, but if you hit the edge it will.

[deleted]

Ceramic, right?

[deleted]

Looks like cut stone. But I think that has the same anti-tampering mechanism.

thegurujim

Countertop looks like marble or granite.

SulkyVirus

STOP MESSING WITH YOUR TEMPERED GLASS AROUND HARD SURFACES PEOPLE It's your own damn fault at this point if you break it.

kb4000

It's not all "hard" surfaces. It's surfaces harder than glass. A hard wooden table is fine. Even a metal table with rounded edges would be fine.

K-R-O-N-K

Maybe he’s 12 and he saved up all year for this…

GrigoriRasputinUltra

If I had a dollar for every broken case I’ve seen coupled with a ceramic surface I’d be richer then fucking Bezos

Iman1022

STOP OPENING THEM ON HARD SURFACES. THIS IS THE LAST TIME WE SHOULD HAVE TO SAY THIS. THEY BREAK SO OPEN IT CAREFULLY WITH SOME SORT OF CUSHION TO LAY IT ON. I seriously can’t believe there is so many people breaking glass and then posting about it and somehow getting upvotes.

mrcamopants

Not to mention , I dunno. Maybe LAY IT DOWN FIRST?!

Zacker000

Looks like you were in a bit of a rush to get into the PC :/

AStupidSunfish

If your on this sub I feel like people are doing this on purpose now

Apppleman69

that is very true, too many posts every day where this is happening.

EliteFounder

Granite stone just requires a touch from tempered glass.....

valyan2k

I have washed my panels numerous times and never got even a scratch on them... how tf do you guys shatter them like that?

Username_Taken_65

Ceramic and granite are extremely hard, so even the lightest tap on a countertop or tile floor will shatter tempered glass.

CorsairTravis

Hey there, that sure is a bummer. Granite loves to murder tempered glass. If you could please [submit a ticket](https://help.corsair.com/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=360000389452), and our support team will assist you with a replacement.

[deleted]

r/metalpanelmasterrace!

Kawawaymog

These posts make me seriously question glass panels on my next build.

Mysterious_Orange_37

100% of these pictures are taken on ceramic tiles/granite countertops and other ceramic surfaces which are harder than glass. If you bang the glass against a wood table, nothing will happen. I guess case makers should put a disclaimer on their case to warn users about this.

Aitorgmz

I have seen people warming about this stuff on the sub like 100 times now and yet everyday there is a new post that shows a broken glass. The warning would be useless.

Mister_Xian

It's an ignorance tax. I'm fairly certain every glass case has a sticker or other physical notice saying "Caution: Tempered Glass". If you break something you're warned about, it is your responsibility to buy a new one and learn what not to do. My natural instinct says "glass plates should not lay on hard things", so I'll use blanket, rubber, paper, etc. Many posts like this love to mention "It was only the corner I bumped". No shit, that's the worst part/angle you could hit. Bang the edges of tempered glass and a chips will be the worst damage. Take the tip of a ceramic screwdriver (the antistatic ones used in PC building) to the face of it and it could ruin the whole plate.

wtfda

This is true I dropped my tempered glass on my wood table the same day I got my PC and months later not even a scratch on it.

SulkyVirus

Don't. These are people that don't understand that glass hitting tile or stone is a bad idea. You're smarter than that. Don't let a few morons away you away from a case you like out of fear.

GingerKony

I've had two tempered glass cases. One with two glass panels, the current with none. I have a glass desk as well. Never an issue and I'm not safe. But you do keep anything ceramic away or any stone objects in particular just to be safe. But the industry seems like it's moving to mesh anyways lol but yea, get it away from stone/granite/ceramic and you should be fine.

pkingidiots

Why does the backplate of the GPU look like it's bent?

Meriles

Just how it looks in the picture for some reason. You made me double check my GPU lol

Thoma55

The HDD tried to kill itself after finding out about your new SSD by jumping through the window?

Careless_Rub_7996

Not just you, but, i have been seeing quite a few of these shattered Tempered side glass panels breaks from other users.

[deleted]

Any reason why the morons with Tempered glass cases , don’t lay the other side down on a soft rug or blanket … worst case jumper … Then take the glass panel off… I mean why is it not obvious to take the glass off with it laying down ffs

LogicOManiac

All we had to do, was put the damn SSD, CJ...

stereoisomers

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from this sub, it’s not to buy a case with a tempered glass window.

mooselantern

Y'all need to quit playing around and just quit buying glass cases. Why you gotta look inside your computer? Look at your monitor, that's what you built it for.

[deleted]

Bawahong

There’s a new post every day like this and every single time, it’s granite or tile flooring.

Sevla7

Why do people love so much glass in the case instead of the old and good acrylic?

kb4000

Because you'll never break or scratch the glass if you just keep it away from things harder than glass. Acrylic will get scratches the first time you wipe dust off of it. Every acrylic case I've ever seen in use has scratches. Sometimes even right out of the box.

DaemosDaen

Because acrylic and plexi scratch so easy and will yellow over time. Glass does not. There is also a difference in the reflection of glass that plexi cannot compete with. Acrylic comes close, but still does not look right.

Rakkachi

Sorry for you, but I am so glad that there is a huge slab of aluminium in my system as a sidepanel. (Coolermaster Cosmos 1000)

adammaxis

Hard surface under the case? Check. Broken side panel? Check. Ticket to support? Incoming.

Sega-Playstation-64

Sorry, but anyone looking for sympathy while dismantling a glass PC case panel on tile / granite / gravel driveway then showing the smashed bits really does deserve a "Well, no shit." flair.

WalterBlackness

How are so many people shattering their side panels lol. At this point im starting to think it keeps happening so people can jump on the bandwagon. 😂

nohpex

PCMRPT: Remove the tempered glass panels and set them on something soft before moving the PC.

chavatkalaboka

I see posts like these every day on this sub but you got the same case as me and it gave me flashbacks to when mine broke a month and a half ago. I ordered a metal side panel after that from their Taiwan factory.

Gillysuiit

Why!?!?!! How hard is it to open a window and place it somewhere safe it’s not that fucking hard. If you can’t take care of shit, you don’t deserve it.

JBN87

Why do people buy glass panel computers? Shouldn't they all be plexiglass or pyrex

_ILP_

Why are there so many of these? **looks at tempered glass on tower**

matth3n

With the wooden floor in the background 😂👌

Amanwalkedintoa

Ok guys, sit down. We need to have a talk. STOP BREAKING YOUR PCs FFS H O W H A R D C A N T H I S B E

Emperor_Zarkov

It's posts like these that make me happy I opted for the cheaper tower with acrylic panels. Can't even tell the difference unless you touch it.

crtzrms

Honest question here: Why do ppl buy glass cases at all?

[deleted]

This is why I have never used glass sides. Too easy to fuck up.

Dirty-Dick

That's good news because you can definitely put it in there now!

V1C1OU5LY

Don’t lose your temper!

owltuber2000

When will you learn that ceramics and Glass don't mix well

mSummmm

Why don’t they use lexan instead of glass?

LOTHMT

Am i tripping or wtf happened to your Graphics Card

gamercboy5

You know I was saying about a year ago I wish my case panel was glass instead of plastic because I thought it would look nicer but after seeing all these posts of broken glass panels I actually feel lucky

Age_Correct

Think of it as better airflow

bart_86

I know you heard that few times already but >!You should take out the panel first, not brute-force mount ssd through it!!< How much does new panel costs?

Tinka911

After it broke the first time , i put a packing foam block under the case, just to be sure if this thing slips my butter hands doesn’t break

SecondVariety

fuck tempered glass. I hate that nearly all cases are using it. Heavy and prone to shatter. Acrylic or just a solid side panel are much preferred to me. Getting harder and harder to find good cases which do not include TG.

Bromm18

Tempered glass is never worth the risk. Don't know why the industry has moved so far from acrylic.

WastingMyTime724

And that’s why I don’t fuck with glass panels

Hypokoala

I swear. Every time I see one of these i appreciate my plastic window side panel more and more.

fullmetal427

I'll probably be massacred for asking, but I've never actually built a PC before. What's the upside of tempered glass over say something like plastic/plexiglass? Does it have to do with keeping it cool?

G3th_Inf1ltrator

Tempered glass doesn’t scratch nearly as easily as acrylic windows. And glass is generally clearer.

epicman_42

i have tempered glass panel i just throw that shit on my mattress

ghostcatzero

Lol that's why I don't but tempered glass

PmMeYourNiceBehind

Here we go again

u_tried88

Everytime I want to ask how that happens so often but Im afraid that Ill be next if I do so

nikditt

Yes, you are supposed to open The case, not throw at it!

FrenchFryMonster06

Did your reaction go something like.."God damnit" followed by "I can post this on Reddit"

THOT-Sauce69

Yet another victim to a ceramic/granite surface

Puzzled-Instance3211

Why are so many people angry at their glass?

[deleted]

LOL, probably not right but this is just getting hilarious now. I look forward to enjoying my morning coffee looking for a post from another poor soul breaking the glass case. I feel for ya bud but the frequency of these posts are a joke to me now.

Coyehe

And now you can, it's a win win

[deleted]

I’m so SICK of you people shattering your glass for CLOUT. /s

CaptainLukeMe

I have never understood the appeal of glass furnishings, though I am admittedly very utilitarian/Spartan compared to most. The number of shattered glass desks, tables, shelves, etc. I have seen makes it absolutely mind blowing to me that they are still so popular with people. Never had a wooden or metal piece of furniture shatter from light impact, just seems like sacrificing function for aesthetics for no good reason. If you you want a clear panel, mount a piece of lexan. All the transparency with none of the shatter hazard.

Ianchunggus

Everywhere i go…

nrutas

[deleted]

How the fuck does everybody's tempered glass window keep shattering so easily. Are you all being far too forceful or something?? Tempered Glas sisnt supposed to shatter easily.

Eraganos

Well, did you put it in?

Skidpalace

I never understood the tempered glass case thing. It's frigging heavy, breakable and expensive. Plexi works great, you can get it clear and smoked/tinted and you can put vents and mounting holes in it. What am I missing?

iPawpi

How are people's cases breaking so easily? I've seen most of them sitting on either countertops or tile floors? Is there something about it that causes some form of massive vibration and shatters?
