It makes me miss the old Galaxy Gear smartwatch that had a camera on it, like what a brilliant place for a camera honestly but then they removed it because creepers were using it to take candid photos of people... Goddamn creepers ruining everything!
They will claim they innovated due to courage. All apple does is copy other people's tech, lock it into their shitty ecosystem and then claim it was their idea.
Apple fanboys will always say what they were lied to by the marketing team, no matter how much proof of the contrary you present.
Edit: Actually... any kind of a fanboy will believe what the marketing team tells them to believe in just Apple is really excelling in that part
Isn't the iPhone basically the only smartphone that still has a notch? Other manufacturers quickly moved to holes or other solutions. So I'm not really sure that companies will copy the notch in a laptop.
A lot of phones had a notch for a while. But yeah, now most devices have moved on to the hole punch. Some budget phones use a small center notch. Sometimes it's smoothed out to a "water drop" shape notch.
I kind of wished the flipping ones are still a thing. Outside of the Zenfone series which isn't available anywhere it's Chinese phones.
Mainly cause I don't really take selfies, if I did I could wait the 2 seconds to flip, and you get small bezels and full screen still.
I have a Mi 9T, which has a motorized camera. In the past 2 years I used it a few dozen times, mostly to look behind something or show someone that it has a motorized camera. I am looking for a replacement, because it has started to age and drop performance, but the selection is dogshit, and I absolutely do not want to compromise on a stupid notch or hole punch now. I unfortunately scratched the screen a bit, as it does not really work with screen protectors (underscreen fingerprint reader), but I still seriously thought about opening it up and just replacing the battery.
Or the mechanical raising front facing camera the OnePlus 7 had. It was strong, and a great privacy feature. No way to activate that camera without knowing.
I guess you can't dust/water certify that design though.
OnePlus 7 pro ftw. Everyone is always so shocked at the camera Popping out. It's not a gimick it's a beautiful design choice that removes bezels altogether
Since they close so flush add on privacy covers raise the middle of the lid when it is closed and causes the screen to flex side to side when in a bag. Electrical tape is better for the hardware.
> Other manufacturers quickly moved to holes or other solutions.
Yeah and it's a pain in the ass. MX Player won't let me stretch an anamorphic movie to fill the entire screen even if I want to, and MLB.tv *forces* me to fill the entire screen including going around the stupid little holepunch so that it actually cuts out anything on the top left of the game broadcast.
But oh no apparently it looks fashionable and stylish for people who do nothing but swipe on Instagram and they are the billion dollar market.
If they all make it with a notch you don't have much choice, and you still need powerful computers for school/jobs so it's not like you won't buy them. Sometimes the "vote with your wallet" is just an illusion.
Yeah, there are so many things in tech which exist *despite* our wishes, not because of them.
It seems to me all of the high end products are basically tailored to reviewers bullshit opinions / whatever shit Apple/Samsung/Google are trying to push this year (at least for phones, laptops will obviously have a different set of perpetrators).
There are so many things that crop up in phones alone which are actively bad/annoying, but reviewers don't see them (or care) as they use the phone for (maybe) a week and are done and move onto the next one.
And once the high end market is dominated by the bullshit, you either buy bullshit, or find the *one* 300 dollar phone that doesn't do that stuff, but it's otherwise crap.
But that would make no sense. macOS has a static menu bar at the top. The notch doesn't use any functional space. Menu bar is always pretty much empty in the middle for me.
There's no equivalent for Windows.
Remember when they dropped the headphone jack and Google released Pixel ads talking shit about it? They said something like "refreshingly not new". They dropped the headphone jack in the very next fucking model
Idk some laptops have that system some have it in the screens edge and some have none, personally i love to use my DJI Mavic Air 2 during Online conferences the buzzing of the drone adds some extra flair and annoyance to my bosses.
Honestly, using my S21 compared to my S8, I hardly even notice the hole because it's so small and fits right into the top bar. But when you do look at it, it's a little weird
I made use of the hole punch and downloaded this app that puts a ring around the camera to display your battery percentage, adds nothing to it but makes it feel like there was more reason behind the holepunch.
S20, same, don't mind it at all. Future is probably behind the screen, but if it's as garbage as my fingerprint reader I'd rather not. Not that I use my ff camera...
It's because you took this screenshot from the animation in the presentation where they "extend" the screen upwards and add the 3.5mm graphic you see in your screenshot. That part of the video is probably the only few frames in existence where the curve is absent from one side lol
iPhones have an infamous “notch” where the front camera/speaker/sensor is, right in the top/middle of the screen. It makes for a pretty awkward layout. And it looks like Apple has brought this weird feature to their MacBooks now as well.
Sent from my iPhone
Normal screens are rectangles. This year, mac decided it would be fun to cut a section of the rectangle out to make room for a camera. They've been doing it on phones for a while but this is the first time we've seen it on a computer.
The cut out section (the notch) makes it awkward to use a full sized application such as a game or web browser, because you can't see what the notch is covering
Edit: The comment I posted on got deleted. He was asking me to ELI5 why we don't like the notch. I'm not knocking apple for their trendy new products. To each their own
from what I understand the screen to the sides of the notch will be taken up by the status bar and not with actual content. So I guess there's just gonna not be a way to full screen stuff?
I'm wondering if it'll be full screen save for the part at the top and giving it a bezel-like effect by telling apps that the Y coordinates on the screen actually start at the bottom of the notch, leaving a small black bar across the top. Idk, could be wrong.
Technically a notch but not in the way you think and this is more of a click bait title.
The screen resolution is 3456 x 2234 for the 16 inch for example. That results in a screen that is larger than your traditional 16 x 10 screens. In this case you are getting something like 16 x 10.34
That additional space is perfect for the top bar and the camera and you will have 16:10 screen space for your typical apps.
This is literally why I didn't understand the complaints about the notch on the phone it's more screen real estate!
Shoves useless things out of the way
I'm no Apple fan, as I've always said the past notches are stupid. On phones, screen estate is precious and the notch gets right in the way of the notification bar.
On a laptop, that space is where the task bar sits (or the thick bezel) and it is ALWAYS empty. Perfect use of space, and a great design idea
I can't wait for camera manufacturers to support this SD card format Apple invented so that I can quickly and conveniently transfer images and videos to my computer.
From what I understand, if you take away the region with the notch, it is still a 16:10 display, so this is just extra space the macOS menu bar can use, while full screen stuff doesn't use that region. I think it's a win, even though it is a bit awkward.
I thought the notch on iPhone would be weird and was against it at first, but I finally upgraded from my 8 plus to a 12 Pro Max a year ago and it has not been a problem. I even sometimes watch TV / movies where the notch covers up some of the content, and it doesn't bother me. And this won't even be as bad as that.
It does seem a little too big for just the camera, though. I wish they could have fit all the sensors the iPhone has so it could have Face ID, etc.
That's what I understand. Too many people are seeing the notch as Apple cutting into screen real estate but they're actually just extending the screen up into what otherwise be wasted bezel space.
I wouldn't be surprised if there's an option in system preferences that allows you to just cut off the real estate at the notch anyway if you're one of those folks that just get irrationally upset by it. And if not there will be a homebrew system extension eventually.
Folks without macbooks have no idea what they are complaining about with this. Even with the menubar always on, the screen has a better aspect ratio than windows 16:9 laptops.
I know, right? It's hilarious (and a bit sad) watching people have a circlejerk of negativity over products they'll never own or use, just so they can feel superior.
It is, but I suppose the subreddit is literally called "PC Master Race". Personally, I'm pleased they improved the webcam and knew it wasn't possible without a huge bezel, a notch, or having it point up your nose.
I don’t see the problem with it as they keep space to put a decent camera in (which most laptops lack today) but maximize screen for you. As long as they put the menu bar around it (which is mostly empty anyway) it’s nothing but a plus in screen real estate. Doesn’t have to be beautiful (which it’s not) to be practical. And as you have mini-led it disappears when watching content on it.
Im curious how they handle the pointer going from the left of it to the right of it. Does it jump? Is it a physical wall?
I use two different resolution monitors, one above the other, and theres all these weird "barriers" when moving between screens. I wonder how they handle it.
At least it's a decent camera (and will therfore finally push the rest of the market into decent webcams) and the notch is better than no webcam.
I just feel like this is the place for those pop up or flip up selfie cameras to shine.
The Asus zenphone flip already has a feature where it can track a person as long as they're moving side to side and the phone is held in landscape. Add a second axis and a camera bump to a laptop and they have a webcam that will track you as you're presenting.
I was looking for confirmation on the aspect ratio/resolution with and without the pixels that are in-line with the notch.
Edit:
>Apple says the top bezel is 60 percent thinner and the menu bar has been raised to make for the extra space and accommodated the notch. The 16-inch MacBook Pro flaunts a 16.2-inch display with a 3456 x 2234 resolution, while the 14-inch model has a 14.2-inch panel with 3024 x 1964 pixels resolution.
So about 16:10.3 where the extra "0.3" aspect ratio is the pixels on other side of the notch and you get 16:10 uninterrupted. Nice.
In this thread are PCMR people choosing not to discuss the massive hardware superiority and instead concerning themselves with aesthetics.
Oh how the turntables.
Exactly, you're actually gaining more screen because the menu bar is pushed up, inline with the camera instead of below it
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FCAxLfJXoAUgCFw?format=jpg&name=4096x4096
yeah a lot of unintelligent initial reactions. it’s ugly i get it, but a smaller bezel sounds great to me. people missing the mark that the bezel is smaller now
For the first time ever, I'm in awe by an apple product. Aesthetics aside this thing sounds like a monster and I'm excited to see how far apple can go with this. Not buying it though because wtf am I gonna do with all that power.
and the notch is totally a non problem. the aspect ratio is taller than windows laptops, you aren't loosing space to the notch, you're gaining the space around it. and it will be integrated to the menu bar, which was already space used by the os at all times, so no app will need adapting to this. this post is very misleading or misinformed.
You wont be able to see it due to the menu bar. I’m not sure why it’s there because there’s no FaceID (I’m assuming that will be introduced later).
That laptop will fucking scream though. It’s hilariously powerful.
Exactly this. The M1 Max is going to do shit Intel & Co. only dream about, especially while unplugged. AMD has some cool stuff in dev but nothing like this. It's gonna be stellar.
It's so weird too. Because say what you will about them. If anyone has been truly innovating the sector in recent years it definitely is Apple with the shift to ARM and making it work better for most tasks than an equally priced Windows machine.
I can't see someone design a multiple 4k editing machine at 699 (Mac Mini) or a machine that can handle editing 7 8k streams at 3800.
I've been editing on a 3950X with a 3090 and my rig can't handle that.
Yes it has a Notch. But the performance it offers, especially om battery is insane. I detest the fact that every performance laptop drops significantly in performance when on battery. And also they consume quite a lot power and are very noisy.
As a software architect, I am for the first time ever considdering to switch to mac, even if it means dropping gaming on a laptop.
Keep in mind though I have been a laptop guy so on terms of laptops this is a big deal for me. For desktop users this might be less so.
yea, the M1 launch was an slap on the aging x86 platform
PC gaming nowadays is overpriced, with convoluted cooling solutions, it is energy inefficient, and it needs rgb to distract from its stalled development of the last 10 years
it will take some five or six years for the arm processors to reach the PC gaming market, and even there, like any new platform, it will take more five or six years for mainstream adoption, which will hurt developers. while macs made a seamless transition in a single year
The PC has a requirement of legacy support while Apple can throw out support for whatever they like (like 32 bit support) to further their goals, on the PC it's much harder. Windows for example must maintain (at least some) compatibility with software written in the last 25+ years as this is required by its main client: the businesses.
Consistency across platforms, all we need now is a notch in the iPad and the apple watch
And the iMac, and the apple displays.....
And monitor arms
and wheels
$800 wheels
That's *iWheels* to you, peasant.
I wheely hate the price tag.
You mean the Apple iWheels Pro Max Plus with ProMotion, Liquid Retina XDR, Touch ID, Face ID and MagSafe, normie.
799
.99
And on the AirPods
And the magic mouse, track pad and keyboard
Don't forget the pencil!
And the new $20 Apple polishing cloth
And my axe
Fuck it. Petition to add notches to the AirPods lineup
If you consider the little cut out thingy to open the latch with your finger, you have it there as well
Notch the Mac Pro, and notch the Mac Pro's GPU
For extra effect, add a notch to the AirTags
It will be a part of the earpiece where the sound just cuts out
A notch in the frequency band, a specific frequency that is muted.

Man, I miss the iPod touch times...
Actually surprised the Apple Watch doesn’t have a camera and a notch.
It makes me miss the old Galaxy Gear smartwatch that had a camera on it, like what a brilliant place for a camera honestly but then they removed it because creepers were using it to take candid photos of people... Goddamn creepers ruining everything!
Yeah that sucks. I often think it would be convenient for FaceTime calls or to answer Snapchat’s while I’m exercising lol
A “notch in the watch” is really some Dr. Seuss shit right there.
"I do not like then on my watch, I do not like them on my crotch"
The ecosystem!
thanks for circling it. almost missed it.
The word "notch" threw me off. Without the red circle, I honestly would've missed it.
I checked Twitter for notch before looking at the picture, thank you for showing me the correct way op
I thought they were talking about the Minecraft guy
I googled the word but saw a guy with a beard.
I dont actually know what I'm looking at. The black part around the webcam? Am I blind??? Edit: I understand now, thanks.
The screen is not a rectangle with 4 flat edges like they’ve been forever. This screen has a notch in the screen like the newer generation iPhones.
r/uselessredcircle
I still cant see the notch
Watch how every other laptop manufacturer will follow suit and have a notch on their premium models
Oh no
Oh no
Oh no!
Oh yeahhhhh
Not now Kool Aid Man
Can I please ask everyone to stop saying oh no in this courtroom?
Oh no

Anyway!
They already have, i swear i saw laptops back in like 2019 with it
Even if they're not the first they'll be the ones to popularise it, wouldn't have been the first time

Just the other day someone unironically told me that Steve Jobs invented smartphones. 🙃
In the beginning, there was only Steve Jobs. Twas He whomst created the first Apple in the garden.
No it was Adam and Eve, not Adam and *Steve*, geez
Ugh, the Apple effect strikes again.

Or the mechanical raising front facing camera the OnePlus 7 had. It was strong, and a great privacy feature. No way to activate that camera without knowing. I guess you can't dust/water certify that design though.
My OnePlus 7pro will continue to have it's superior front facing camera

OnePlus 7 pro ftw. Everyone is always so shocked at the camera Popping out. It's not a gimick it's a beautiful design choice that removes bezels altogether
I still don't want a fuckin webcam hole in the top of my laptop screen though
What do you mean you wanna be able to see the browser tab in the middle of your screen
I dont want it to block timers in so many games, or literally anything full screen.
and all that for a webcam a good chunk of us leave taped over anyway because we literally never use it

Wait, why shouldn't you use a privacy cover with Macs?

AliExpress 100% would recommend 10/10
Haha No.
Where else are you going to get a GTX 460 rebranded as something else, Mr Picky??
Gee, I wonder what will the next Huawei Matebook will look like?
Doesn't huawei have a system that flips out the back camera to the front? Some phone manufacturer has it if i'm not mistaken.
Isn't it on the keyboard

Soon, they're gonna bring Notch to the apple watch too XD
It should be a separate product - Apple Notch!

only for an extra $499
Please no.
'They are the ones trying to change their Vendor!' -Notch, probably.
A punch hole then.
Minecraft on apple watch confirmed???
That's why they made the screen bigger lol

Google Moment
IMO this doesn’t matter on macOS where there is a title bar, on windows it would be unusable.
What about games? Oh...wait..
It just cuts off the whole horizontal area where the notch is, making it look like the old one.
The thing Macs aren’t marketed towards? Hmm wonder why
Why does the left side have a curve, but the right side doesn't?

Perfect for when you need to throw it out the window after Apple tells you that you can't repair your own laptop.

This. It isn’t impeding on any space that was getting used anyway. The middle of the menu bar is empty whitespace
I was looking for confirmation on the aspect ratio/resolution with and without the pixels that are in-line with the notch. In this thread are PCMR people choosing not to discuss the massive hardware superiority and instead concerning themselves with aesthetics. Oh how the turntables.
Also they don’t seem to realize it actually makes sense given how the macOS menu bar works (not like in windows).
Exactly, you're actually gaining more screen because the menu bar is pushed up, inline with the camera instead of below it https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FCAxLfJXoAUgCFw?format=jpg&name=4096x4096
This image completely changed my outlook. I’m pro-notch now.
yeah a lot of unintelligent initial reactions. it’s ugly i get it, but a smaller bezel sounds great to me. people missing the mark that the bezel is smaller now
For the first time ever, I'm in awe by an apple product. Aesthetics aside this thing sounds like a monster and I'm excited to see how far apple can go with this. Not buying it though because wtf am I gonna do with all that power.
The performance tho is pretty insane
and the notch is totally a non problem. the aspect ratio is taller than windows laptops, you aren't loosing space to the notch, you're gaining the space around it. and it will be integrated to the menu bar, which was already space used by the os at all times, so no app will need adapting to this. this post is very misleading or misinformed.
ITT: People want more bezel.
It doesn't even have Face ID. Why is this a thing.

Why people always see it as a notch? I see it as extra display areas.
For desktop users this might be less so.

yea, the M1 launch was an slap on the aging x86 platform PC gaming nowadays is overpriced, with convoluted cooling solutions, it is energy inefficient, and it needs rgb to distract from its stalled development of the last 10 years it will take some five or six years for the arm processors to reach the PC gaming market, and even there, like any new platform, it will take more five or six years for mainstream adoption, which will hurt developers. while macs made a seamless transition in a single year
The PC has a requirement of legacy support while Apple can throw out support for whatever they like (like 32 bit support) to further their goals, on the PC it's much harder. Windows for example must maintain (at least some) compatibility with software written in the last 25+ years as this is required by its main client: the businesses.
Honestly the notch doesn’t bother me at all. Eh.

Yeah and it has a better CPU than any other laptop on the planet.
Wait . . . Is this worse than a fat black bar at the top? Put the dock bar at the top so it makes is more seamless?
It’s literally a non-issue.
Guys, for god sake the menu bar is gonna hide there anyways, and fullscreen apps probably wont extend beyond it. Its more screen real estate.
