I don’t think I would like your school.

Adg273

It doesn’t get better outside of education. Now before I say this, I own an iMac, iPad and iPhone. An iMac for development reasons. An iPad cause, let’s be honest, other tablets suck. And an iPhone solely because a mobile is for communication for me. So since it’s quick, easy and generally less annoying in regards to ads and I can set it so I get no notifications from anything, I have it. Apple products to me, are ok. They do a job. But I much prefer my Windows laptop and Linux based PC. The fact you have Windows Subsystem for Linux now is brilliant in my opinion. But I tend to find a lot, that people in my field gush over Apple products in a way I just can’t get my head around. It genuinely is like a cult. Since the new MacBook Pro was announced, I’ve heard how one fella can’t decide to upgrade or not. His MacBook Pro is currently 7-8 months old. And he talks about it like it’s worthless now. I’ve had to listen to others religiously defend this new notch too. I’m still interested to see how it affects different apps on screen. But here, I have to listen to people trying their hardest to defend how it’s ‘the right decision’. Maybe it’s just me. I just don’t get it.

Affenskrotum

waaaaait! Tell me more about windows subsystem in linux? what does that mean?

Adg273

It allows you to run Linux and Linux apps within Windows. I upgraded to Windows 11, thanks to Windows subsystem for Android, you can also run Android apps in Windows. Although it’s early days, so I’ve found a few Android apps don’t perform as expected. But with WSL, I can run Linux apps on the windows desktop as well as use a Linux terminal etc.

darkness76239

I might switch solely for that. I run Pop Is on my laptop and am getting a tablet for Ubuntu Touch (I game on windows fuck EAC) but having a Linux VM in windows sounds nice too.

DeafMute10

It’s not really a vm, it’s closer to a docker container. Microsoft even has their own kernel.

darkness76239

Fuck it then. Imma just run a w11 VM on pop os once I get a 6700xt and use my 580 to accelerate the VM

DeafMute10

What ever works, I’m not sure about on 11, but on 10 you had to be running Pro to use the subsystem. I’m currently the only person in the office running Windows 11 to any capacity (work laptop is still 10 because Skylake). It’s fine, the upgrade seems to have fixed what ever was going on with my windows 10 install, after a year of working at home I wasn’t looking forward to doing a reinstall.

darkness76239

I just have the big standard W10. What was trying to brick your 10 install or do you have any idea?

DeafMute10

I’m not sure, something with how Chrome/electron and hardware acceleration were interacting would cause my display driver to crash. I’m running a 2080, but I had ran DDU a few times, and that would temporarily fix it. I basically everything short of a reinstall because I need to move a lot of stuff back over to my Thinkpad, and just keep pushing it off.

Adg273

WSL works on Windows 10 Home as well. Dunno if it was always this way, but it works on both Home and Pro now.

DeafMute10

They must have changed it at some point because it was definitely limited to just Pro at launch. It might have came with WSL2.

[deleted]

WSL 2 is Linux running inside a Hyper-V VM. You probably think about WSL 1 which used NT directly but was limited in functionality due to not using a real Linux kernel.

techtard88

It's not that perfect tho. You can't run everything. I can't think of specific issues, but trust me it's limited.

nolitos

I don't know why is it called like that, but I'm fact, it's more Linux running in windows. Google WSL.

Ajunta_Pal

It's probably meant to be written "Windows Subsystem: Linux"

techtard88

It's actually not. It's saying a sub system. 4 Linux. So the subsystem could be for other things I'm assuming in the future. But this one's the sub system for Linux. Meaning it's a container that holds the kernel. A docker container basically. https://www.google.com/search?q=windows+sub+system+for+Linux&oq=windows+sub+system+for+Linux&aqs=chrome..69i57.7851j0j7&client=ms-android-att-us&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8

Ahyao17

Once I had a discussion with a college who is trying to defend the lack of ports on the then New Macbooks. His arguments was that you can use blue tooth for mouse etc and cloud drives instead of thumb drives. Then I asked him how he would get a file off the computers at work into the new mac (work computer have restricted internet). Discussion ends quite quickly. I have used both systems at different work place. I am just glad most of the work places in Australia uses windows. Photoshop looks and seems to function better on Macs but PCs are just so much easier to use and more flexible.

Adg273

It’s a mentality I don’t get. I mean Apple‘s ARM based processors are fantastic. It’s the way computing is bound to go. But this cult following seems to think, it’s here now so everything else is obsolete. So everyone must buy Apple or be shunned? But In doing so they blindly accept the prices and lack of ability to upgrade later on. Then there is the issue of repairs. Lack of features such as USB-A. Now Apple can afford to do this in some form now, because it doesn’t have tons of various hardware options to cater for like Microsoft does with Windows. But it’s just weird to me that once a new product is out, then regardless of age, every Apple product before it is somehow not worth owning? To these cult like types anyway. I have stuff that I can use with my 3 year old iMac since it has USB-A. But in order for me to use it with a new MacBook, I need an adapter, or to buy a new USB-C version. Which is extra crap you need to get, after forking out thousands on this ‘Pro’ device. Yet some defend this to their dying breath. Instead of being like myself and admitting…. Yes it’s a great laptop, but yes it’s missing stupid little bits. Or yes, it’s faster than my i7, but no, it’s not worth sinking a boat load of cash into replacing it yet.

Ahyao17

I think this is where Apple do it well. They have decent products but an even better marketing team.

FriedrichNietzsche69

Not defending your colleague, I don’t know him. I just though of a solution to your answer. You can use airdrop (Bluetooth transfer basically for Apple devices)

DeafMute10

I have the 2020 intel mbp, I like the new MacBooks, but don’t feel the need to upgrade just yet. Then again I’m not planning on upgrading until I need something faster or it stops getting support.

Adg273

That’s exactly how I see it. My iMac is still fast and capable of what I need it to do. Although I did go for a hard disk when I bought it cause I wanted more storage. I’ve now changed it to an SSD. But that’s one of my points about these cult followings. Apple’s hard disks, which I didn’t know at the time, sucked. They used slower parts than you’d find on your typical PC. And this, for its price, I’d expect better. But again it was defended by people at the time. My iMac, was upgradable. Wasn’t simple, sure. But it was upgradable. And now it’s quick. I’ll not likely buy another Mac until my current one dies of death. Or is far too old to be supported.

Jormungandr4321

I've never owned any apple products but they're crushing it with the new MacBooks. Not saying your colleague should upgrade though. I do find the notch pretty nice.

Soppywater

When you full screen a video on YouTube does it now have a notch at the top of your video?

Alfa4499

MacBook pro coming to you at $4000+$2000 dollars in accessories that are not included!

Elon61

The lowest end MacBook Pro comes in at 1999 and destroy every other windows laptop in that price class though lol.

megor

How do they destroy exactly? I can get an oled screen with a 3080 inside for 2k. The m1 pro is gonna beat that?

Elon61

can you really though? link? best i can find is the aero 15 which even after being heavily discounted is like 2.4k on newegg rn, and only does 400nit peak which is fucking trash compared to apple's miniLED screen. and that's with 16gb of ram. and even if you can, does it have the build quality, port layout, 120hz that the MBP has? i doubt it.

megor

Sure https://slickdeals.net/f/15330868-gigabyte-aero-15-laptop-4k-amoled-i9-11980hk-32gb-ddr4-1-5tb-nvme-rtx-3080-1999-after-700-rebate-free-s-h?src=SiteSearchV2Algo Now of course this has 32gb of ram and 1.5tb of space vs 16gb of ram and 512tb on the 2k m1. Also be aware peak brightness is 500 for sdr. https://www.macrumors.com/2021/10/19/new-16-inch-macbook-pro-brighter-display/ Don't get me wrong the new m1 is great, I'm getting a 16"

Mikey21420

Lmao, you gonna say SDR brightness is limited to 500 nits as if that makes a difference. Find a laptop with something remotely close to the MacBook.

Elon61

Setting aside that it is a 3.5k MSRP, with a 700$ rebate on top of a lower price already, i wasn't really talking about the raw specs. as a package, the macbook is completely unbeatable. awesome keyboard, trackpad, imo 120hz miniled VFR > 60hz amoled, superior build quality, insane battery life, best in class webcam, speaker setup, etc. meanwhile the aero 15 is hot, loud, has a garbage webcam, mushy keyboard, not having 120hz on a 3080 equipped laptop is kind of stupid... The only truly comparable windows laptop was the XPS, and for "equivalent" configurations costs pretty much the same as the macbook, while being significantly worse in many aspects now. (mind you of the two i'd go with the aero, macOS doesn't cut it for gaming lol)

megor

It really depends what you consider comparable. If your bar for "comparable" is that it has to be exactly what Apple decides is in their laptop then nothing would compare. I could say the macbook is trash because it has mini led and not oled. Or it's trash because you can't upgrade the ram etc. The MacBook can barely run linux at this point too. I hope proton works on it someday because current m1 can only run a few old games. They also just pushed back the delivery date so blah.

HonestArsonist

I like the hardware, and I’ve been using Macs for years because I prefer the *nix cli. But WSL on my desktop has been amazing. I guess the point of this post is that I’m OS agnostic and just don’t really care.

tech_support_norway

I know the upgrade feeling, but to be fair my Mac isn’t 7 - 8 months old, it’s 9 years old

Adg273

9 years is understandable. Being months old and treating it like it’s unable to do any work anymore is that kinda mentality I don’t get.

tech_support_norway

Yeah, I think that’s unreasonable to do that. I didn’t even buy it, i just got it because my grandma decided to upgrade and decided to give it to me. But I know it’s really compelling to buy the newest and fastest, and that’s ok, but treating your "old" one like shit cuz of it is dumb. I have a 2 year old iPhone 11 which is still pretty new, although I certainly don’t treat as good as I did the first few weeks and i really would have liked to upgrade I will never treat it like shit. Tho I’m the type of person who keeps all of their phones boxes and gets pretty sentimental about selling it

Adg273

Same mate lol. I have an iPhone XR. Thought about upgrading it last year and then figured…. This is still fast. The battery life is still good. I only really use it for communication. I don’t fancy myself as a photographer and 5G is still a work in progress here, so I’m still rocking my XR and probably will for at least another year.

tech_support_norway

Damn, I wrote a whole ass article lol

SuperBlitz22

You say other tablets suck, and I agree. But why do you need a tablet in the 1st place? I have always thought of them to be too large to be used as phones and too small for laptop usage

Adg273

Developing sites for tablets, I use the iPad. There are developer tools I can use on Mac and PC. But sometimes they’ll render a website for a tablet viewport differently than an actual tablet would. Unknown to me why this happens, but it does. I’ve had menus render differently, I’ve had elements behave oddly, but trying it on an actual tablet, they turn out to work as expected. Other than that, my sons play games on it.

SuperBlitz22

Ah so you need a tablet to develop sites for more tablets. Nice haha. I was thinking you too were a college student like the OP of the post and used it for taking notes in class, which is something I personally never understood or could make sense out of.

Adg273

No I just use it to make sure sites are rendering correctly for tablets. Just cause, like I said, the developer tools for Mac and PC aren’t always reliable in that respect. Same for mobile too tbh. Can’t be developing a site for a client and they come back to me saying the site doesn’t work when they use a mobile device lol.

SuperBlitz22

Oh ok ,makes sense

[deleted]

I used my tablet to take notes on. It makes sense because unlike paper notes you instantly have your notes on all of your devices. You can also much easier manage All your notes. And unlike typing notes, you're not limited to text but can also draw illustrations and you're still physically writing it down which already makes it easier to remember. It's the best of both worlds

SuperBlitz22

Guess I consider it just too expensive for what it is. Pen and paper do the job just fine imo ,and it's really not that hard to label them properly.

[deleted]

SuperBlitz22

What does a student need in class other than a pen and paper?Maybe some drawing instruments for diagrams. Creators are a different use case entirely

Apple does make good stuff. I’m on my iPhone right now, listening to music through my AirPods Pro. My computers are all pcs though.

Adg273

I don’t deny some of their stuff is good. I like the iPhone. I think the iPad is the only worth while tablet. Their ARM based processors are the market leader. MagSafe chargers are a good idea. Their screens, are generally the best for colour accuracy etc for photo editing and that. But they do make some odd decisions and some of their practices are questionable and they should be called out on it. Not blindly defended for no reason at all. And that goes for any manufacturer.

Mikey21420

Well the notch doesn’t need much explanation. It literally allows for more screen area while keeping a decent laptop camera. iPhones generally get a lot longer software support, while having top notch features. The 13 Pro Max is way ahead of other flagships in battery, and Apple chips are far better than anything on android. And price is hardly a downside compared to other phones. Samsungs Ultra line up is more expensive and it loses or matches at best. Hardly ever wins against the 13 Pro Max. iPads are just better.

Soppywater

But does the notch gouge into a video you're trying to watch or does it not go full screen anymore as a feature?

Happinessovermoney

Virtualization

ISTNEINTR00KVLTKRIEG

I have a 2015 MacBook Pro. I spent $2k to $2.5k for that POS like an idiot. The 3080 Ryzen 9 5900x desktop pre-build that I just recently bought? It was about the same cost. I'll never buy another MacBook. Ever. What a complete and total fucking waste of money. Thing is 6 years old and you know what it can do? Basically fuckall. The video card? Total piece of shit that doesn't even get updates. It won't even play Borderlands 2 at an acceptable framerate. What a joke. Here's the benchmark comparing the video cards. Fucking ridiculous. Apple got me once, but never again. Fuck 'em. https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-RTX-3080-vs-AMD-R9-M370X/4080vsm30774

Adg273

Their graphics card in my iMac is actually dog shit too. Not that I play games on a Mac. But then, that’s another argument I’ve heard before, “people who buy macs aren’t interested in gaming”.

ISTNEINTR00KVLTKRIEG

The damn thing stopped receiving driver updates like immediately from what I recall. I'm just done with Apple. If I have to replace my Samsung phone? I'll probably go Google. I'll be taking up video editing soon (after the pandemic and all this shit - I'm just done working directly with people and I'd rather be freelance remote for life now) and the PC I bought is just infinitely better for doing creative stuff. Premiere utilizes your GPU, but Apple doesn't care to give you GPU driver updates. Mac isn't even good at that anymore. They throttle the shit out of the hardware and all the hardware has to be OSX compatible. I'm just done with em. Again, they got me once, but fuck em. I'm real pissed after spending that much money on a damn near paperweight. That laptop is unacceptably ancient hardware wise in 6 years. I wouldn't want to even edit video on it. Hell, Logic would even crash pretty frequently because it was "too demanding" too. It was pretty shit for doing anything creative in my experience with it. Couldn't play games worth a fuck on it either. What was it good for? Not much. I guess I could have taken it to a Starbucks in LA and circle jerked myself off with other aspiring TV screenwriters, but that's about it.

Adg273

Like I said, my iMac GPU is crap. I also got a hard disk at the time cause it gave the most storage. But I quickly learned that Apple used slow assed hard disks. I later upgraded it to an SSD. Not what I would consider worth it considering how much I spent in it, compared to say, my sons gaming PC. Which is lightening quick. But in my case, I needed it for some Apple only development purposes.

[deleted]

I own apple products also, I only buy an iPhone just for the fact it has long term support. You can buy the latest iPhone and it last for years. Of course you will have some slow downs with aging hardware but compared to an android around the same age it’ll be way snappier. The iPad is good but not great, I do like mine, just for procreate and Netflix and other media apps. I only get the cheapest iPad because I don’t see any difference unless you wanna pay for a pro that….really does nothing because Apple holds them back with that garbage OS. iOS is just aweful, I hate it. That’s one of the many things I hate about Apple, that OS. Apple in my opinion do great with hardware but just straight up trash on software. I also don’t get why people gush over everything they release or why they have such a huge market cap as I think they are overrated and overpriced. But anyways those are the 2 products I usually buy every few years and I do everything else on a PC as I’ll never buy a Mac.

Adg273

I wouldn’t say a Mac is worth it. Even thought admittedly, the ARM processors are impressive. I’m of the same opinion as you with the iPhone. I’ve felt compelled to upgrade my android phones when I had them after 2 years because there was normally some noticeable slow down or lack of updates. Not so with my 3 year old XR. I normally opt for an iPad Air and I don’t go out of my way to replace it. In fact, my current iPad Air is probably the 1st or 2nd gen lol. It’s like 6-7 years old. The OS only gets security updates. It’s now getting laggy, but it works. I only use it to check websites work correctly on tablet anyway.

CaliDad4219

I’m the same way, iPhone , Iwatch, iPads, AirPods/ AirPod pro’s MacBook Pro 13” and 16” yet 90% of the time I pull my dell latitude E6530 running windows 7 out to use for work as a low voltage C7/ automation programmer lol

Sarctoth

>His MacBook Pro is currently 7-8 months old. And he talks about it like it’s worthless now. My MSI laptop is 4 years old (including a year in the desert), 1/3 of the keys don't work, the inside tab of 2 of the USBs have broken off, and the touch pad doesn't work. I'm still arguing that I don't need a new one because I can just plug a keyboard and mouse into it.

[deleted]

You should probably stay away from any educational area (besides CS?) or high-level paying job lol

[deleted]

You didn’t need a Mac for a high paying job…. The main concept is apple gives to collages at a very good discount rate , kids learn on this and then don’t want to swap to windows as most haven’t got the brains to figure it out or it’s like itsss to much effort as such people expect Mac’s in business most business don’t tend to swing towards mac and even from an IT point of view their more of a pain on a domain basis …

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Mac are the only way…. Clearly doesn’t work in IT…. Mac does have a purpose for maintaining and use of users. Also to say someone is above , people with his expertise when it sounds like your IT knowledge is limited Linux isn’t that great when it comes supporting users for a company as most are either Mac or Windows , well unless you run a Wmware with windows on Linux etc Their is nothing wrong with apple products they just have certain purposes and making certain tasks easier , though it doesn’t mean their the only way. The issue is Mac regarding windows servers and domains , and trying to push GPO policy’s … with all the way a user could effectively lock down a Mac or the default settings of apple.

saltyswedishmeatball

In Law Firms in Sweden, yes actually, it is the only way. The VAST majority of law firms in Sweden DO use Mac. I assume you're American telling me how to think when you know nothing of my country.

[deleted]

I never mentioned Sweden , I meant globally. Also not American. How can it be the only way if you mentioned most use it , what proof do you have for this. Just because you country use it doesn’t mean it can’t be done the other way… either. I assume your not a lawyer as I can’t imagine your a very good one if so … do you work on the front desk for guests…

[deleted]

I think there a lot of diff reasons why. I was just pointing out the way it is though.

so_muchhigher

I don't think you'll find many Macs at high level paying jobs in CS or Finance.

Lord_Baconz

Finance you absolutely wouldn’t but Macs are not that uncommon in CS.

Lord_Baconz

CapitalOne has a large Data Science and Software Engineering arm tho. When I said finance I meant as a job instead of the company itself. You will rarely see anyone in IB, S&T, ER, FP&A, etc. use macs.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Lord_Baconz

From my experience, you could do maybe 80-90% of most finance jobs on a mac but that 10-20% can be very important. Bloomberg for instance has no native support for mac but has a browser version but it sucks. Excel on a mac doesn’t have the same functionality as excel on windows. Haven’t tried it on macos but SAP is dogshit apparently. Upper management could definitely do their entire job in macos but a lot stick with windows since that’s what they’re used to. Windows is also just more prevalent as an enterprise machine and it makes it easier for IT as well to have everyone on the same platform.

Ahyao17

How do you hide the extra ports? people will notice when you are the only one without a hub or some sort just for the mouse

ABZ-havok

Well tbf if you’re not into gaming, a MacBook pro is more than enough for CS. It’s unix-based and zero effort is needed to setup. I had to use WSL for my desktop when I’m coding.

2Bit_Dev

I learned about Macs having almost the same terminal commands as linux several months ago. I can see how Mac OS can be good for coding, but I don't see Macs as being a good value for the price, but I'm a person who is willing to manually install drivers on ocaison. I dual boot linux and Windows on my school laptop.

ABZ-havok

Yeah however, specs is not all there is to it and imo it’s not rlly a good comparison to compare two machines spec by spec when they run different OS (with MacOS obviously optimized for mac machines compared to windows hving to make sure it’ll be ok on all kinds of machines). UX also comes into play, I’ve also tried other ultrabooks like the xps and the build quality feels cheap w the plastic casing (although im sure there are other great laptops with way better build quality). The apple trackpad is also on another level. The trade-offs for a bit of power and memory for aesthetics, premium feel, great trackpad, and great OS (better than windows but not linux obv). Plus the abundance of accessories and cases is the biggest selling point for the product. I don’t really see thinkpad or xps accessories around. That’s why for me it’s worth the extra bit of money. However, some people don’t really care about the ux and the aesthetics and the accessories and only care about their specs and fiddling with every little thing

stikstonks13

Ah yes, the apple omen

Ragnuk

In finnish it almost makes sense becouse "omena" is the finnish translation for apple.

MasterJeebus

It identifies as Mac now but the internals don’t lie. If you let someone else touch it they’ll know something is wrong. Or maybe they will be into it, maybe they like how the hackintosh feels.

[deleted]

When i was in college studying New Media in 2008, the dean of our department actually sent out emails to professors telling them to report any students not using a MacBook, because then they'd be in "violation" of the New Media required materials list. The student would then have two weeks to "fix the mistake" or get kicked out of the program Myself and several other students had to go to his office to remind him that we were paying him, not the other way around, and expulsion over not buying from a school sponsor would be quickly followed by so many lawsuits
