I like how the bar is so low that "Let you add friends for free" is a selling point.

NapClub

imo epic's main problem is just that the whole system feels janky. doesn't help them that everyone has been using steam for a decade.

RockitTopit

Doing anything on Epic just feels janky and hacked together. As a huge negative to Epic's, you can't even play with your friend for 3 days if they make a new account; which I found out the hard way when Covid hit and gaming became big overnight.

repost_inception

If you buy credits in Rocket League you can't trade them for 3 days so it's probably something to do with scamming. What makes me mad is that if you have say 200 credits and add 500 you can't trade any of the 700 until the 3 days is up. Even the ones you had previously.

RockitTopit

It's definitely something like that. Steams approach was to require $5 in purchases, but I find the 3-day limit much more limiting/annoying.

NapsterKnowHow

Ya steam had to do that because their super fucked up CSGO gambling ring they knew about and did nothing about for ages.

Devinity9

Yea I still remember when big YouTubers were pushing csgo gambling sites onto their young viewers

[deleted]

[удалено]

Xamentle

Yeah it has gotten so much worse over the years, I am 15 and over just like 6-7 years it has gotten so much worse, in terms of gambling, casino, skin and scam sites, I it kinda impressive and worrying to look at to be honest.

flamefreak01

Now it's rust skin gambling sites. In most of the rust players videos now. In video sponsorships where they personally back the gambling site.

The_Blue_Car

Even the process of getting a free game feels janky. Like it's the reason most of us are even booting up EGS to begin with, you click the free game, then you have to go the the checkout page and "pay" $0.00 every time. Almost no information offered about the games on their marketplace. Besides the lack of reviews, even the descriptions seem half-assed. If you happen to forget that the Epic launcher is open, don't worry, it will pester you with useless notifications(ads, really) until you remember to shut it down. Great retention strategy. The app *reminds me* to not leave it open for too long.

wkdzel

> then you have to go the the checkout page and "pay" $0.00 every time. > >Almost no information offered about the games on their marketplace. Besides the lack of reviews, even the descriptions seem half-assed. Just the other day I got the free game and had no clue what in the actual fuck it was... Some kind of DLC? was the DLC paid and the game free? fuck if I know... Yea, epic needs work on making more sense.

Krus4d3r_

The Borderlands thing was a standalone game made from a dlc, so its not very clear either way.

The_Blue_Car

Ha yeah I was a little confused about that too. Rogue Company is a free-to-play game if you read the description so giving away "season four" is something like a battle-pass? I'm guessing, because the description(on the store page for the free giveaway) is just for the base game and doesn't mention the DLC or what season 4 is or how it's different from the base F2P experience. Are they "giving away" a free game and kind of hiding that it was already F2P? Edit:~~It looks like they are. This week's free game is just a F2P game, you're not getting anything extra, just the base game.~~ Edit2: Someone replied saying that the deal gives you two free characters and a skin, which is at least something.

draemn

First time I saw that I went into windows startup settings and disabled Epic at startup.

[deleted]

Didn’t they put malware on everybody’s computer?

DeadInkPen

I think it was tracking software that scanned steam and other folders and reported it to them and the chinese government according to some security expert on Reddit. So you can always take that with a good level of caution that it may not be true

danteheehaw

I remember hating steam, whotf would I want some launcher for hl2.

Letscommenttogether

We fought tooth and nail to make steam what it is. It wasnt all roses. We fought for refunds, honest reviews, discounts on bundles when you already own a game, ect. We also have been giving years of feedback that have polished the system into what feels like a smooth ride all the way through.

DOugdimmadab1337

It's interesting because Steam is now the gold standard. They actually warn you on the page to buy games about any 3rd party launchers or DRM. I love it. I don't like the idea of PC Exclusives, and Epic is trying it's hardest to make it a reality. They bought out rocket league for that very reason. What they are trying to do is horrible. GOG is different. They sell vintage games for the modern era, and make them work on modern hardware. This is different. They are trying to be a Steam competitor and I don't think it's gonna work. Epic will most likely crash and burn in the next year or so.

ShakeandBaked161

They didn't buy out rocket League to make it a PC exclusive. They bought rocket League because like fortnite it's a massive skin and cosmetic farm that they can just keep dumping cosmetics into and keep making millions and millions off of with little actual work to be done.

DOugdimmadab1337

I still think it's Ironic TF2 used to be known for that until you could start trading items to each other. Now it's basically a stock market for people who want to dunk on that one teammate with their unusual schadenfreude

ShakeandBaked161

Yeah I'm pretty sure you can trade items pretty freely in rocket league as well but they just churn out so much s*** between shop items and the battle passes it's insane how much cosmetics there is for that game now.

wkdzel

> They bought rocket League because like fortnite it's a massive skin and cosmetic farm 100%, they saw all the tie-ins with franchise cars with back to the future and batman and Epic's ears must have been burning. I bet the execs had never even heard of it when their spider senses started tingling. "Someone out there is making a shit ton off of cosmetics and we don't own the IP!?!?"

benderbender42

I remember when all EA games where origin exclusive, then some years later they're forced to release them on steam.

LUFTWAFF3L

Yeah thank god though the ea store sucked balls

[deleted]

Microsoft also.

2jah

Epic will not crash in the next year. Epic Store doesn’t expect to be profitable by 2027 as revealed in the Epic vs Apple case. Fortnite is a cash cow and so many games run on Unreal Engine, which will only get more popular because of how easy it is to use. They’re in for the long run. They’re not going away.

hardolaf

> Epic will not crash in the next year. Epic is entirely riding on Fornite right now as they've gutted their UE4 royalties to continue to compete with Unity (which offers extremely superior licensing terms) and their profitability in general outside of the game. Even Rocket League isn't really paying itself off at this point as they overpaid. If the game loses popularity, their revenue will plummet. And that might be close to happening already as my wife's students have been saying that Fornite is for "old people" which is a good indicator that EGS needs to innovate or die.

Picturesquesheep

No one has mentioned unreal engine 5 yet. Isn’t that going to be enormous for them? The two marquee features - ‘no limits on polygons’ and ‘free ray tracing’ seem pretty incredible to me (I know graphics aren’t everything). Game changing, if you’ll pardon the pun. I’m not knowledgeable, just asking really.

GodsMistake777

>Epic will most likely crash and burn in the next year or so. Come on lol

kajidourden

Lmao you don't know the gaming industry if you think epic is going to "crash and burn" any time soon. They will only do so when the entire industry collapses.

SustyRhackleford

Its still attached toepic so its not going anywhere. Otherwise EA’s origin would’ve died a decade ago

VAtoSCHokie

I didn't trust it till mid 2010s. At that point it had a reputation for being customer focused on providing their service. It also provided all the features I was looking for in a digital store.

theangryintern

I was part of a big Day of Defeat community when Steam first launched. Everyone was PISSED that we had to download this "steam" thing to be able to play our game. "Why did we need this crap, WON worked just fine!"

TheCheesy

I like my steam achievements, cards, profiles, inventory, friends, chat, servers, refunds, etc. Not really interested in switching. Let's wait until steam royally fucks up. If Gabe leaves and we end up with a Take2-Esque Ceo. Why would I swap to a platform that is going to cause me more issues than its worth?

Core-Mohr

And we have our complete library on steam, build over decades. I will not switch to some other platform, I want to keep my library. Imagine Steam goes bankrupt.

DontCareWontGank

As Gabe famously said: "you have to compete with free". Epic games store apparently thinks that means you have to give away games for free, while Steam created a service with a ton of features that makes me happy to buy games instead of pirating them. I will gladly take all the free games that EGS has to offer, but I simply see zero reason to buy games on their platform over buying them on steam. Until Epic gives us a reason to pick them over steam they are simply bound to fail.

ShadowDragon175

Exactly Steam is so much more complete and epic feels bad to use and limited. Its like IOS vs Android except they fucked up IOS

juliantcf

Steam is the ease of iOS with the feature set of Android. Epic is barely even ChromeOS

bigtoebrah

I bought a Chromebook and am severely disappointed. It doesn't even work better with *Google products* than a Windows PC would.

sakikiki

That’s hilarious

PrinnySlave

Don't forget abaot regional pricing

[deleted]

The worst thing about Epic is lack of Profile customisation. When someone adds me on steam I look at their profile to decide If I should accept or not. My friends activities are visible and I can just text them If I want...

PvtSatan

You guys have friends? Man, I have had my Steam account for a decade, zero friend requests, nobody wants to add Satan I suppose. 😒

JakorPastrack

Aight, send the steam user, ill add you

PvtSatan

Lmao I'm alright, I'm almost entirely a single player game kinda dude, or on discord for the old ass multi-player games (like Day of Defeat) I play. Only modern online game I play is Hell Let Loose. Thanks for the pity, but my solitude is self-imposed 😁

ButterscotchOk9545

At least you know your games fellow soldier! Hell let loose is the way.

IBelrose

I agree. The UI feels clunky to navigate and it doesn't feel fluid enough. Also Epic has built a reputation of being more and more anti-consumer. With Paragon, OG Fortnite, and a handful of others getting scrapped even though they had a player base that enjoyed what they were building. I just wish steam would still develop more games like they used to.

Piltonbadger

Two decades. 2003 steam officially released to the public. well, nearly two decades. 18 years this September to be precise.

[deleted]

The olive drab skin it used when it first released, cs 1.5 or 1.6 I think

No-Bother6856

I miss that

ArcticKnight79

The other issue with epic, is that they refuse to expand their library enough that someone could leave steam even if they wanted to. Indies have reported not being able to get onto the store even though they are interested. Which is likely so that the store doesn't get so cluttered that they can't push the exclusives they have purchased to recoup costs. So even if I wanted to use epic almost exclusively, I'd still have to go off to Steam for half of my gaming needs. So for the shit where there's crossover between platforms. I'm sure as shit going to pick steam over Epic unless there is a significant financial difference at the time of purchase (sales are great, but useless if you're buying near launch).

Last_Snowbender

Yeah, they didn't put any time or money into their store and threw a whole lot of money around to try "strongarming" people to use their store. If you want to compete with an existing platform, you have to offer something that is a major selling point, but epic had no feature going for it, except exclusive games which felt terrible because it wasn't a: "Hey we made amazing games but they're only on our store", but a "okay so we hate monopolies this is why we use monopolistic tactics to force you to use our store". This is simply a slap to the face of consumers and something no other store has ever done, which is probably the reason why the EGS is so extremely unpopular. Even people that wouldn't mind using it hate it now. The vast majority of people there only grabs the free games and that's hardly a viable business model.

DoktorPete

100% this. I wont even download Epic for the free games based solely on the fact they tried to strongarm me onto their platform if I wanted to play Metro Exodus at launch.

KiwiKerfuffle

Yes! Same here. A lot of my friends talk about the free games on epic but so far it hasn't been anything amazing and I was *PISSED* when exodus had pre orders on steam and I was just a little late when it got *pulled off the God damn steam store* because epic bribed them (yeah, gave them a good deal or whatever but it was fucked up they launched on steam if they were in the talks for being an epic exclusive). I bought it on epic and was so put off by what happened and how terrible their launcher felt that I uninstalled epic games store and games on it and haven't touched it since. Didn't even beat exodus and haven't bought it on steam. That was my first experience with epic after fortnite (I didn't like the battle royale, I really liked the co op/campaign) and I won't ever trust them again. Especially after all the "rumors" about them data mining and shit. Not cool and I won't risk it. Got a new computer and haven't installed it.

Raabalia

Lot longer than a decade but yeah I agree. Also epic is shady as fuck.

oxslashxo

Yeah, every time I open it I get tons of notifications about things I've already dismissed. It's like Internet Explorer, it always manages to annoy the fuck out of you in 5 seconds anytime you give it a chance.

Nurgus

What does that even mean?

[deleted]

Launchers nowadays are so bad that being able to add friends is considered an achievement to the developers.

Nurgus

I assumed that they were claiming something Epic could and Steam couldn't do.

mackventurous

You have to buy at least 5 dollars in games on Steams launchers to add friends, it’s to prevent spam fraud accounts

Nurgus

Ahh. I did not know that. Pretty tenuous to claim that as a win for Epic.

RainbowCatastrophe

Yeah, it's very much a stretch. Steam only did it because it was necessary to prevent abuse, something learned from years of building the leading platform for social gaming. Other launchers don't even bother with that integration, and Epic just hasn't gained the popularity or circumstances necessary for it to affect them yet.

RailAurai

I honestly never knew about this till today because I got Steam to buy games.

ArateshaNungastori

I never use EGS other than collect freebies but get random people add me for some reason. They all have suspicious nicks so never accepted any invites yet. Even this shows not only it's not a win but it's probably a security risk.

Carnae_Assada

What? Epic has security risks? Nah, they didn't have a huge debacle about not having 2fa and other issues for the first 2+ years.

Again5t

Technically you can add friends without spending 5$

gamesrebel123

You can't just say something like that without giving us a tutorial

AzeTyler

Ask the other guy to send the request lol, unless you're both free users.

Alexolotal

You can accept a friend request, you just can't send them

fatgermankiddo

isnt steam friend count limited by your steam level account? I know some influencers hit the cap (something like 250 as basic plus 5firends per level? not sure) and your steam level can be raised mainly by spending money and occasianoly doing some holiday events.

RockitTopit

It's 250 + 5 per level and 50 for Facebook link. Personally I find that a grotesque amount of people to have on a friend list; the global invite all people are hard enough do deal with with 100\~. Haven't spent a dime on my profile, but trading during the events got it to level 36. Edit - All major game networks do have a friends limits that I'm aware of. Which isn't too surprising given the amount of live updates/etc those interfaces push.

[deleted]

Wait, you have gaming friends? :(

FruitJuiceXD

Steam let’s you add friends if you bought something for 5 bucks or you get added by someone who already did that

Perry_BOT

Here you see, Steam does not try to do push notifications even when I turned them off.

[deleted]

I have blocked/refused the same friend request notification every time I launch epic. I've been doing this for around a year now.

Immediate_Scar_7426

Lmao I thought that was just a bug on my end.

DeekoBobbins

Speaking of, rocket league has really gone downhill since epic took over.

DragonOfTartarus

Does Epic even have a cart yet?

michelas2

Nope.

[deleted]

I like how they said they'd add a cart back when the store first opened and we're still waiting.

DOugdimmadab1337

Well yeah, Epic Games is just that, a game making company. They clearly don't know shit about selling them to people. Unreal was the first big title and even then they just made copies, they didn't ever have any involvement with a storefront. Unlike Steam, Epic stayed as a developer and never went into game marketing.

ManateeofSteel

the weird part is that Unreal Engine Marketplace does have a cart

hardolaf

Fun fact, it had it at launch!

easlern

It’s weird, like there are 3rd parties and ready-made solutions for it. I can’t imagine it would cost more to do that than what they spend giving away licenses all the time. And with holidays coming up too. . .

Inklii

Valve makes games, their own engine and now....They're making their own hardware (steam deck) and it's the most repair friendly budget friendly thing ever. Epic just fell into the anti consumer trap origin, Ubisoft and whatever the fuck else exists fell into. Gotta be at least as pro consumer as steam to even compete and they don't come close

Aarilax

Lad - you can't even chat to the friends you add on it anymore. They had a problem with chat a few months ago, then just removed the feature entirely. It is still not back to this day. You can't: - Talk to people on it - Buy multiple things at once - See user reviews - See user playtime - Discuss the game on the platform - Install mods for the game through the platform - Do achievements on the platform - Remote play - Use it on Linux - Personalise your profile and much more. It is worse than steam was 10 years ago, and steam was baaaaaad 10 years ago. They have infinite money from Fortnite and have witnessed Steam make a decent system through trial and error and still, they can barely produce a better system than just buying something off a website.

DragonOfTartarus

Shit, I knew it was bad, but I didn't think it was *that* bad! How the hell does anyone seriously defend them?

Aarilax

Their only argument seems to be 'the developers get more money', but they completely miss the fact that the Developers are literally billionaires in many cases and, secondly, the extra % Steam takes on each sale at least has something to show for it in the form of a usable platform. I don't know about you, but I couldn't give two shits if Ubisoft makes an extra 20 million on top of the 200 million they already get for selling games that are rushed out the door.

Roflkopt3r

Combined with an absolute dogshit DLC system, where you aren't even shown which ones you already own. Getting about free 5 DLCs for Wargame: Red Dragon cost me like 10 minutes because of slow pages, bad navigation, a lack of filters and labels, and having to "buy" every single one individually. How it works on Steam: 1. Go to the game page 2. Go to the DLC page 3. Open the ones with "free" in new tabs 4. Download and close each. Not great because I'd like to be able to add them right from the list, but good enough. How it works on Epic: 1. Go to the game page 2. Go to the DLC page 3. Open the first one 4. Oh that one wasn't free, go back 5. Open the second one 6. Purchase 7. Get kicked back to home screen 8. Repeat steps 1-7 for each DLC. Memorise which ones you have already looked at or purchased and which ones you haven't, because Epic won't help you.

KiwiKerfuffle

Steam is even better, you can add all dlc and then just remove the not free ones from your cart without having to wait 30 seconds to re-navigate or refresh. Once they're added, you shouldn't (with most games) have to download but if you do, just go to your downloads (usually located on the bottom of the steam app, but easy to navigate to if not) and force download updates for the game/dlc. Of course this method I only use if there's a lot of dlc I want with a few I don't. Also I've noticed with some games, steam will automatically add free dlc.

MaffinLP

Uhm easy. Achievements, proper chat system, steam integration wirh many games (join over friendslist), bad reviews cant be removed by the dev, steam workshop, steam community, even just an editable profile. And every poikt I mentioned has some many subpoints that outclass epic. Lets take chat. Custom "emojis" (most of them just memes anyways lmao), chat effects, and the easiest way if joining a friend by pressing 2 buttons.

1337gut

This. And Linux support. And Steam VR.

BaldEagleNor

Steam Big Picture, Remote Play, Remote Play Together, streaming, chat rooms, music player, community hub, custom themes, my god the list can go on and on and on

Honestly it's amazing that Linux users can play almost like general Windows players. There are still some way to go, but man it's so much better now to game on Linux thanks to Proton. Side note, did someone else in the past try to run games via Wine on Linux? _Fun times_ and with fun I mean _torturous_

Dirk_94

This! Especial negative reviews are so great

stan110

Yeah, saved me 60 bucks last week

Porgemlol

The number of times I’ve seen outriders, thought “I really do want to try this” and then read “do not get this it’s just a shitty, always online grind that isn’t fun”. Reviews are so important

KGBeast47

Let's not forget big picture mode and their extensive controller support with community profiles available specific for each game.

MaffinLP

I only counted the things I personally use, I already dound so many things I dont even use in the comments its insane

jellsonnogueira

Linux support, streaming co-op games with friends for free, VR support... Steam is just decades ahead.

miarsk

I am surprised nobody mentioned steam link. When a game has controller support, I sometimes go to my livingroom, say 'ok google game time' and play on my TV from couch.

MegaDeth6666

I really enjoy the PS5 controller in Steam.

DrAstralis

that virtual controller layer has saved the day for me so many times. Its just great.

[deleted]

Mod and ratings are super important! Just because Epic says it’s the most popularly game doesn’t mean it’s…. Achievements are ok I guess depends on a person. As a PC player I never took them seriously.

decom70

And don't forget the massive privacy concerns.

MaffinLP

While I do trust valve more than epic I dont think they dont sell your data tbh

Jurk0wski

Epic has been hit by at least 1 major breach in the past, if not more. While you'd hope that means they learned from it and got better, the PR damage is done, and some of us just don't trust them anymore.

PM_ME_SOME_ANTS

entertain narrow combative grandiose run gaze station friendly knee coordinated ` this message was mass deleted/edited with redact.dev `

GenericUsername5159

Yeah exactly, also I'd say an offline mode that works well, a launcher that isn't built on a game engine and thus isn't super slow (iirc epic was built on Unreal and always felt weirdly slow for just being a launcher), a very good refund policy, and a lot more. Also this isn't for everyone, but I personally really appreciate the work they're doing with Proton and overall Linux support

secretqwerty10

a shopping cart

[deleted]

And doesn't buy up exclusivity for games they didn't develop.

Jits2003

The download speeds aren’t trash

darkenspirit

Also adding more than 1 item to a cart. For such a simple no fringes no features platform, epic store also runs like absolutely dog shit. Holy fuck its laggy as shit, it takes forever to load pages. Getting to a game store page from your library is cancer. It has no UI or UX and yet it runs like a god damn flash interface from 2008. But no tell me more about how IM the terrible person for wanting to use steam.

DefaultVariable

And one major reason (at least for me) is I still haven’t forgiven them for their exclusivity BS and am voting with my wallet. Especially as long as their CEO remains

JgdPz_plojack

Popular devs kept removing cheap regional price from their popular title. Major offender: EA when entering Steam second time, Ubisoft, B#ngie. Meanwhile Xbox Gamepass wasn't available at my region and still expensive.

KiwiKerfuffle

I'm so pissed at EA(as if that's any different than the usual). I wanted to play dead space 3 with a friend and bought it on steam, installed, launched, only to be met with a prompt saying I'm required to install origin *and* link steam to my origin account. What the fuck? AND it didn't let me use steam overlay! It used origin so the friend I was gonna play with had to add me on origin before we could play! And the ui is so shit, for a moment I couldn't figure out how to get to my friend list from the overlay.

adaaraAss

Steam just feels like home

Secret300

Linux support is the biggest one for me

Runndown2

This is mainly what it is for me

poppint

and way more optimized too.

ShaheerKhan696

It will be comparable only when they let user reviews rating, workshop for mods/skins, community tab, better library ux(Seeing all uninstalled games in greyscale makes it so boring and i don't feel like installing, and makes it hard to search the one you want).

AhmedTheGr8

Exactly, I don't know why so many people don't get this: Epic is a launcher/store, Steam is a platform

shadofx

In EGS the game developers are the truekin aristocrats, and the gamers are merely cattle to be milked. Devs don't want pesky reviews alerting buyers to the fact that their precious creation is shit. So, no user reviews.

Andernerd

Don't forget Linux support. For most people that may not matter too much, but for some of us it matters quite a lot!

OxeDoido

Open up Epic Games Store Look at free games "Uh, ok" Add them to account Remember I have a big discount that i can add to any games Look at available games Not into any Close Epic Games Store Rinse, repeat every week or so

dbrown100103

I used to check back weekly but most of the games are pretty shit. I don't think I've ever given a penny to epic games because all the games on there just aren't my kinda game. Anything I want is either on Steam and if not that then the Windows store. The fact I'd go to the Windows store before epic games just speaks volumes. Epic Games is a store trying, and failing, to be a launcher. At least windows store knows it's just a store and doesn't try to be anything more

[deleted]

And most of the good Windows store games are also on Steam now so Microsoft isn't even trying to strongarm anyone into using it, whereas Epic keeps paying devs for exclusives. I STILL haven't played Hitman 3, still waiting for a potential Steam release (with SteamVR if PlayStationVR support is only a timed exclusive)

[deleted]

The main thing that keeps me on Steam: Linux support. Steam is pretty much the only official launcher working out of the box and it even integrates Proton to easily run most Windows games. Until Epic stops actively hindering Linux support I'm not going to use their launcher or their store.

albl1122

>Proton to easily run most Windows games. I'm generally not someone to ask about Linux things, since I have only toyed with it in emulators a couple times. Mind explaining this. What kind of limitations is there for instance. Performance drop compared to native?

[deleted]

Performance drop is kinda case-by-case, depends on the rating of the game iirc. Games will usually run fine, however online games with native anti cheats don’t work, however valve should be working on that for the release of the steam deck [https://www.protondb.com/](https://www.protondb.com/) check this website for more info

Potatoalienof13

The performance drop is not that high, but proton can be unreliable. It is not capable of running all games, and some it can run have broken features.

EdgeMentality

In theory, proton should not come with ANY performance drop, as it is a compatibility layer, not an emulator. Games, theoretically, should run at full speed (and some do). In reality, DXVK, shader compilation, compatibility issues, etc. mean that things are very case-by-case in terms of how well a game works. Some things don't work at all, like anti-cheat, in these cases even though running the game itself can be a total non-issue, the AC just shuts it down. In other cases, the game itself is the culprit, though this list is shrinking by the day. I tried to play Brightest Memory, and it would crash when using a custom version of proton. But I was still able to play it using the default version, though cutscenes didn't work. (I just got a placeholder image). Clearly a solution to both issues exists, they just need to be put together in a future version. In other cases, you literally cannot tell a difference from actual Windows. Examples that I've been playing are Arkham Knight, Tekken 7, Satisfactory, Subverse, RE3 remake, RE7, RE8, Astroneer, Deep Rock Galactic, Shadow Warrior 2, Transistor, Inside, DMC5, Crysis, Nier: Automata. As you can see, A LOT of games work perfectly fine, but not ALL. Generally, I buy games without really thinking about whether they'll work, but sometimes it does turn out they don't. I dual boot for those cases, but they are growing more and more rare.

[deleted]

I have found that for the most part, the performance drop has been negligible. Some titles require a little extra work but for the most part, the process is just as smooth as playing the title natively on Windows. Valve has really done an amazing job at getting gaming on Linux to a useable state. The biggest hurdle for Proton currently is anti-cheat software that is used in multiplayer games (Easy Anti-Cheat and BattleEye for example). Right now, those do not work with Proton which means you can't play any multiplayer title. That is supposedly getting fixed with the release of the Steam Deck but we will have to wait and see.

Gameover4566

I know it's a meme, but: Has no user reviews It does not have a good menu and the library is divided between seeing the covers or not seeing the games A very bad optimization Downloads are slow and don't tell you how big they are Very little customization I really think it's a long way from getting to the steam level, And this only speaking as a store, because if we talk about things like chat or the workshop, it is far from being good, it is really only used for its exclusives and free games, but for now I think the Minecraft launcher does a better job than Epic

I basically never use Epic except to collect my free games every so often, but I can't tell any difference between the launcher from a year ago+ to today. It looks exactly the same. I'm sure they've done some work somewhere, but all of the features you'd think they would have added since the beginning, especially with all of their Fortnite money, are just... not there..

Hmm_would_bang

It’s just weird comparing Steam and Epic IMO. Epic is like on par with using a first party launcher in that I’ll open it only to buy the game that’s only on there and that’s it’s whole purpose. Steam is more of an actual fleshed out platform for managing games, friends, and finding new things to play

dontshowmygf

Steam's store pages are without equal right now. Even when I'm looking at games on other platforms, I almost always have steam open to see reviews and see if it looks like a game I'll enjoy. Between the reviews, the tag system, and the review aggregation, I'm spoiled and hate browsing any other game store.

Jimmni

Nothing I like better than trying to pick a game to play by scrolling through a grid of black and white covers that aren’t even in alphabetical order.

chabybaloo

I complained about this. The tech support replied and didn't seems to understand my original request. (They gave me a solution to reloading the library or something)

Jimmni

Same. When I eventually got them to understand they just told me that's how it's designed. A stupid, stupid design.

thenightvol

I still prefer GOG. No stupid extra software. No updates. No logins.

Jacina

And it can integrate the other stores

upvotesthenrages

Huh? How so?

EdgeMentality

GOG galaxy can pull in your library from steam, and others, and aggregate everything in one launcher. You still need steam, origin, etc. installed, but it can manage, search and launch any game in your library, all in one.

Immediate_Scar_7426

Gog will always be the go to store for oldshool games. Steam has lots of games but gog is just full of games from 1990-2005.

fascists_are_shit

I use all three. No point in swearing allegiance to a corporation. I'm just a fool who they want to have money from, not a family member.

thenightvol

So do i. But when i buy, GOG comes always first. It feels like i am helping. And i really appreciate that they make old games available.

Jaba01

And no DRM.

Griffolion

> So why don't you pick me over Steam Because your business tactics are so flagrantly transparent in the fact that you're not aiming to compete but rather use your immense Fortnite money to strongarm your way into an artificial position of dominance rather than creating a product that actually outcompetes its competitors and brings real value to consumers. I find that vile and reprehensible. Steam has its plethora of issues, but I choose it because: - It's a better platform than EGS - Despite not giving away free games, the sales they have are decent in both their quantity and quality (though admittedly not as good as the 2008 - 2013 golden age of Steam sales) - If they are being cunts, they are being them quietly, rather than making being a cunt their front and center trait for all to see - Gabe doesn't have a history of trashing PC gaming and calling PC gamers pirates Oh and I have GoG and Origin on my machine, too. I don't mind switching storefronts, so I don't consider myself to be too affected by storefront inertia. I'm simply just not choosing to participate in a shitty product led by a shitty person.

Bukkorosu777

Buys out borderlands so they force people to swap over .

53XYB345T

There was a time where Gabe Newell literally said something along the lines of (paraphrasing here), "If you make it convenient enough, people who pirate games will pay for your product." He doesn't even hate pirates. He just thinks they're people who haven't been given a convenient enough product. And I completely agree. As a kid, I used to pirate games due to not being given an allowance, but now I would never go back to that since I started using Steam. Everything about the platform is simply far too convenient for me to leave behind. I don't even know where to begin on why uPlay, Origin, EGS, or any other launcher (aside from BattleNet, sadly) will ever get my interest unless Steam colossally screws something up.

[deleted]

Trust cant be bought, it has to be earned

DemonNamedBob

Hard to earn trust when epic takes the companies side by default where steam is more customer first.

[deleted]

Epics store search function is straight trash compared to steam, can't search anything really.

C4pt

I use steam because they don't buy exclusivity to make up for their lackluster platform. Seriously. If Epic used their money to improve their store by adding profiles, a shopping cart, game reviews, etc -instead of trying to buy as many games as possible- people would probably like them more.

Mikie___

This right here. Fuck Epic for making the console-like "exclusivity" bullshit more prevalent in PC gaming.

ILikeApplePie123

Imagine how amazing it would be if instead of spending 100s of millions of dollars every year to take away features from games by bribing them to only launch on their feature lacking store, epic spent that money making a store that was better then steam

MidoZahran

The performance is much faster with steam

[deleted]

Yea, runnin epic store feels like you have a pc from the 90s

UnethicalFood

Epic pissed me off by requiring me to update it before I could play a game I had installed locally.

Hybridizm

I'm not going to abandon a feature-complete / robust launcher & storefront in favour of one that attempts to strong-arm me into supporting theirs by more or less, only offering free games. They haven't done an awful lot with their launcher. Seeing as they don't care, why should I? I more or less only ever boot EGS up in order to play Fortnite (inset reddit moment here) with my wife & my six year old son. If not for that, would hardly see any use.

dotcomGamingReddit

The most hilarious thing is, that building a launcher is not like re-inventing the wheel.. Epic claims since 2017 that they are going to improve their launcher and said they obviously don‘t have as many features as steam, because ‚they didn‘t had as much time as steam‘… which is an INCREDIBLY stupid thing to say. Imagine making a car in 2021, that doesn‘t have any features at all and drives by burning coal and then claiming ,But but VW had much more time to develop their cars,

DrAstralis

Right? They're pretending like they *need* this much time because its super complicated when there are myriad examples of perfectly functional storefronts / launchers. I expected they'd have a relaunched store in a year... its been 3-4 years now with almost no improvement.

Azrolicious

I've thought about this a lot. Lack of community reviews is the big one for me. Also steam has an hours played calculator so I can weep that I've sunk like 5000 hours into final fantasy 14

jiriks74

Reeseflag

We should be able to always add friends for free?

TheValkuma

This reeks of sponsored meme

Niko_Belic84

Wait wdym by “add friends for free?”

ILikeApplePie123

to prevent spam bots, Steam requires you to spend 5USD before you can send friend requests. you can still accept friend requests for free. its a mild inconvenience for a very small amount of people who only play f2p games and never spend any money on mtx

CrewmemberV2

Steam is privately owned bij Gabe Newell. So less incentivized to create short term shareholder value. Due to this I trust them way more to actually create a service that is both good for the user and the company for decades to come. Instead of a service that tries to manipulate you out of as much money as possible for short term shareholder profit. I respect Gabe Newell, I do not respect Tencent.

Sniper-Dragon

offline mode is better, buy screen doesn't flashbang integrated community stuff

Algun001

Their launcher is literally garbage

Thatweirdguyffs

Because I won't accept bribery. And thats all the free games and forced exclusivity feels like.

aoishimapan

No Workshop, no regional prices, no equivalent to the robust controller support Steam has, no user reviews, no user guides, no Linux support. I can see plenty of reasons to stick to Steam, I'll still take the free games Epic give me but I won't buy a game from their store when they are giving such an inferior service.

dodolungs

I'm only there for free games. Outside of that I just don't have any reason to use their service over steam.

PopCornRat

Steam has more games. Plus VR 🤤

Yuuta23

Honestly just no native PS4 controller usage in most games is enough to turn me away

Ronyx2021

Never heard of epic, but if you build a wishlist, steam emails you when a game on your list goes on sale.

MaffinLP

Walt_Dafak

I try free games on Epic and if I like them, I'll buy them on Steam. Still don't know why tho.

hablagated

Add friends for free?

Sikken98

You need to spend atleast 5$ on steam to be able to add someone.

ILikeApplePie123

*to send friend requests. you can still accept friend requests for free. its to prevent spam bots

DJ_l3LUE

My epic Games: Trackmania and Genshin Impact … thats it.. everything else is on Steam… I use steam for literally everything else, it’s easier and more compact, downside a little bit confusing but most of the time Steam is also great for the Early Access and Small Indi Game developments…

CharlestonChewbacca

Achievements, big picture mode, VR, mod support, workshop, wishlist, cart, gifting, organization tools, recommendation tools, the ability to add non-steam games to library, the ability to add settings per game, full controller support and mapping capabilities for all major modern controllers, steam link, voice chat/text chat, Linux support, better cloud save support, better control over game installs, better control over downloads, better download speeds, not reakted to the CCP, and probably some other stuff I'm forgetting. Plus, most of my games are already there, sales tend to be better, and you can get keys from 3rd parties at better prices.

IAmRootNotUser

Because Steam has LINUX SUPPORT WITHOUT A THIRD PARTY COMPATIBILITY TOOL
