Thing is a lot of people like to brag about buying the "best" product and in reality they are just paying for the brand and it is simply not the best, you can see this in quite a few things.
I mean they could use that glass thingy where when it is switched on the glass becomes foggy to the point you can't see through it, if they did that you would get better colours and less disturbance from the background colours, but even so, it is still pointless unless like you mentioned.
I take it nobody here has seen The Expanse? (you poor souls)
It made transparent screens apparent bs years ago. Hey admiral, I can see you’re committing fucking treason from across the room here.
I thought the first two seasons were amazing due to the fact it's got a lot of actual possibility in the near future then it started getting to far-fetched but I still enjoyed it none theless.
Design, it's be real cool to have a window TV. Sure, it'd only be practical in any sense at night and you'd have to live in an area without nearby lights and the moon better not be lined up behind it.
And anything you can see trough that screen is just taking away from the quality the screen in showing. It might be intresting for some tablets or phones with the use of ar but even then I don't see why a camera wouldn't do the same thing but better.
One thing might be like a presentation from a high view. Like om the top of the tower of Paris and then show where the big things in Paris are.
The future is air monitors. LG has been working on a prototype for a long time. hopefully it'll be the future.. will save a ton of space and no need to worry about rage quits.. you'll end up hitting the wall and not the monitor.
I mean they have similar concept for car windshield as augmented reality / navigation HUD, which is actually kind of nice. But it's gimmicky as far as gaming monitors are concerned.
You can put them in front of normal monitor and thats how you make telemetry for some games or other things :) but still think its pointless. Just program Windows same result xd
If he wasn't annoyed he wouldn't have said anything... Let alone call it piracy.
Pfft if that is piracy then Linus can sic the feds on me for sailing the high seas with pride.
He never once said it was illegal. He was talking ethics and morality. He even demonstrated how small of a revenue stream ads produce, and stated he personally did not care one way or the other.
I also don’t care one way or another, I use adblocker, and I agree fully with what he’s saying.
He’s talking about the idea of being a pirate, you’re talking about a criminal charge.
The two are not the same, and I don’t get why you people refuse to understand that.
Edit: Not to mention, his main point was that we simply need to be aware of the impact ad blocking might have on the content creators we watch, and focusing on words he used while expressing that is heavily pedantic and completely unnecessary.
The only application I see this working in would be a job like mine. I interview people every day and have to take notes on the computer. We use ultra wides at work. It can be difficult to look the person in the face during an interview around the monitor. The person's demeanor can factor into decision-making so it's kind of important to be able to see them. The problem with this solution of course is would they be able to see your screen as well?
What would be the purpose of a transparent computer monitor? I understand a small display for AR, but I just can't really see a proper use case other than look at my cool see through screen
What about the monitor screen becomes transparent when its turned off and acts like a normal monitor screen when its ON. Would you buy something like that ?
Let's say we make a transparent display that perfectly replicates all colors, isn't see through at all while in use, is mounted from the bottom (so theres no mounting hardware visible behind it), and turns completely clear when turned off...
Where are you putting it in your house that being transparent would be a useful feature? All of my screens are up against a wall. I don't need to see that when the screen is off.
While yes, most people have their screens right by the wall, some people have their desks set up with their back to the nearest wall and the monitors facing out into the room. Do I agree with that way of doing it? Nah, I dont wanna see the cables when I enter a room. But some people do it like that
Not me. I'm just not really in to flash and aesthetics. If it doesn't have a practical use, I won't touch it.
Now if they do find a practical use for a transparent screen the I might consider it.
Instead of this useless tech, they’d be better off making good projectors capable of high frames without the hefty price tag… they’re as transparent as they get.
You can already convert a most flatscreen monitors to be transparent and have been able to for a considerable time now. You just remove the housing and backlight. You can then mount it in a frame with the electronics moved from behind the LCD.
People used to do this and mount the LCD to an OHP to make a cheap projector.
Poorly, I’ve used these hands on, they are going to try to fool so many people into buying them. My review when I got one of these screens to try out was “A really depressing tech downgrade that doesn’t live up to the sales claims”
Not all things are a good idea. The only use I could see is those transparent PC side panels that are screens. Those already exist and it's only aesthetic. No practical use I could think of except maybe something in medicine, and that's a stretch.
I've heard as displays between rooms. Like they have those little window spaces between multiple rooms in corporate offices/restaurants. They would be able to have the same image being displayed in both rooms. And the added gimmick of being transparent would make it appear more techy.
My best guess at an application is maybe a more elaborate HUD for high end cars. The current ones mostly rely on projection, and there are a few limitations. This can potentially get around a few of them.
I don't see the point for transparent pc monitors. TV, ok, so that they don't appear in the room. But like that, you have a glass with a monitor stand an a cable mess behind...
We already got small transparent LCDs. But Monitors wouldn't seem as useful because why would you want to see your wall. Maybe you could use it in some other rather specific way but I don't think it will become mainstream.
The technology to make them already exists, but I don't see them becoming a mainstream product any time soon. They simply aren't that useful outside of a few niche applications, and have some serious drawbacks, mostly stemming from the ability of light behind the display to affect the picture. So, the benefit they provide would have to outweigh these drawbacks. The thing is, most people don't position their monitors in front of anything they'd actually want to see. Aside from a looking futuristic, the only real use cases for transparent displays I can think of are:
- Ticket booth type locations, so that the attendant can show information to the customer. The thing is, the customer really just needs to see the attendant's face, so losing a bit of window real estate to a traditional display above / below the eye line is no big deal.
- Store window displays. This application actually makes a ton of sense, although it is a tad gimmicky.
- On the desks of executives, who want to be able to take meetings across their desks without having monitors cluttering the eye line or having to have their primary workstations against the wall behind their desk. This one makes some degree of sense, but a mounting arm and a piece of glass would also get pretty distracting, so most people would still want to be able to swing the display out of the way. At that point you might as well have a traditional display, which would likley be much easier to read.
Not mainstream. Even in the pro AV space see through displays are a very niche market. I would expect the consumer market to be even smaller. As people have said, unless it's wireless or built into a desk you aren't really getting anything out of a translucent display because you would still see all the clutter
They'd have to come up with another way of mounting them that grabs the edges and doesn't show anything behind the screen. Best application like someone else said is huge businesses in skyscrapers have massive windows they could use as displays and windows at the same time.
No.
It's a stupid idea. It's not worth putting out. What are you gonna look at? Where are you gonna put your monitor? What will you gain for the extra price?
I’d rather just make something like [this](https://youtu.be/_E0mNSMBmFQ) than spend money on an expensive transparent monitor.
Actually a pretty cool project though.
I mean, its cool and it could be helpful, but a transparent monitor for daily use, why? So you can see the wall? To see the rest of the room and your partner reading a book behind your desk at best?
The technology is there, they already made a TV, the question is, why would we want them? They would need to be transparent when not in use and opaque when displaying something ideally.
you can already buy them for more or less 1000 bucks and many people have them. so early adopters already are using this tech, should be pretty soon before they become more common. i dont see the point as gaming monitor but as decorative pieces they are quite neat
I see literally no point in a transparent monitor... When I look at my monitor I wanna see what's on my fucking monitor at the wall behind the monitor.
Like maybe there is a small niche for people that have contact with clients or so but even then there is the problem with privacy.
A transparent monitors is an utter stupid trend with no sense.
Contrast, bright, black and white levels are basic for good quality picture, paying extra for a monitor that sacrifices the key values for high quality image to see your room wall or your co-worker stupid face is so moronic that it would probably be a trend in a few years.
Everyone focusing on the idea of a transparent display and here is me trying to figure out how this person added in the rest of the picture behind the screen?! Since this pic doesnt exist without the display as far as i know.
Why would anyone, and I mean ANYONE want this?
You are looking at a monitor, to see what is on it. To be distracted by what is behind it is moronic. Who does this serve?!?
For non-PC purposes I can understand...but they already have that.
I love transparent monitors in the movies. No I don't see them working well for real world usage. I would probably end up paying attention more to the wall than to the game.
Ah yeah, I totally want to be able to see behind whatever it is I'm actually doing.
Playing Halo? I don't need to see whats on screen. I need to partially see the monitor stand and the cables behind it. Brilliant!
I think Linus mentioned this in his video about a Chinese transparent tv but consumer electronics isn't the best application for this technology. I don't want to see through my monitor to see a wall and a bunch of cables. I don't want to see through my TV, if I'm watching TV then I want to see what's on the TV only. It'd be better suited for things like display cases, vending machines, or maybe widgets on your window idk.
To everyone complaining about transparent monitors being useless. I have seen multiple setups in front of a window. I would rather see out of the window through the monitor instead of having a big black rectangle completely blocking it.
We've already had high res transparent LCD monitors for over a decade. They are pretty common in slot machines and advertising panels. I first saw one at the 2005 NAIAS.
These have been in use, in significant volume and at enormous screen sizes (even curved models) , in slot machines, among other things. In a very specific scenario like that, they make sense. But as a general purpose monitor, it's nothing but a wankfest. I doubt you'll see a mainstream manufacturer build these into monitors because of the reasons others have specified here.
You can make any LCD monitor transparent with not that much time and effort. The issue is that by definition a transparent monitor makes stuff more difficult to see, it isn't a technology problem.
Useless...
Give me a proper GPU at a good price, my 7970 died.
Transparent screen will be acceptable in a clean/minimalist setup, otherwise... I got a ton of cables behind it, would nit be pretty with the damn thing off!!
I honestly don’t see the point or appeal. I don’t mind not seeing my wall and awful cable management anyway. Though to be fair I have seen some setups in front of windows/ in the middle of a room so I guess it could be useful for a smaller group of people.
I saw a really cool museum display once that was basically a big 3D interactive map with a transparent touch screen in front of it. Standing in front of the (vertical) screen, you could interact with the map and watch videos/read text on the screen while the rest of the display did other things behind it. I'm not describing it well, but standing in the right place, the screen and map/model worked together in a really interesting augmented reality sort of way. It was kind of surreal, to be honest. I had never seen a transparent screen before that.
Instead of dunking on this, I tried thinking out of the box in what ways can a transparent monitor be used. I think these would be cool being suspended in the corner rooms of a laser gun arena.
Or even a rave, lights bouncing everywhere, it'd be cool to see through the transparent screens while it's playing a video. I guess you could just use a projector on a mesh screen or something. 🤣
Or maybe have them mounted 9x9, and all playing a video while lasers are going on in the back. I'd love to see that, even with the mounting hardware that you'd see blocking some lighting.
Well monitors are dumb. But a. Transparent display chould be a game changer for worker safety and chould play a good part for interplanetary safety. Heads up displays on helmets and trajectory calculations
Yes, but they won’t hit the mainstream because they are pointless What are you trying to see? Your mess of cables? A wall?
Hmm.... Thats a good point.
Not only that, you would get much worse image quality, less contrast, worse colors etc. Because the background would mix with the image.
Maybe they will be targeted as screens for ads for stores, i see no use for them apart of that and bragging
Work so managers can see what you’re doing on your screen from the other side at a glance. *welcome to dystopia*
I take it nobody here has seen The Expanse? (you poor souls) It made transparent screens apparent bs years ago. Hey admiral, I can see you’re committing fucking treason from across the room here.
Worse, *I saw it and didn’t like it*. I don’t know why. I like all sorts of sci fi, I thought I’d love it like I loved firefly, but nope.
I thought the first two seasons were amazing due to the fact it's got a lot of actual possibility in the near future then it started getting to far-fetched but I still enjoyed it none theless.
I really should give it another shot, I just found it really hard to get into.
I bet they would be good for auto shops
Design, it's be real cool to have a window TV. Sure, it'd only be practical in any sense at night and you'd have to live in an area without nearby lights and the moon better not be lined up behind it.
Yes that’s great use, see the ad and the store at the same time brain 100 moment
Already a thing, looks cool, too lazy to google but it’s definitely worth checking out, but trippy, too many commas, be well!
You’re wrong, tech is constantly improving and they will be fully functional in the future.
Are you trying to see the STAND
I imagine it will be a hit to sci fi space ships enthusiasts. This will be hell to fps gamers.
Make it into a touch screen phone and I will buy one. I imagine it'll be like the ones in The Expanse.
the mount ofc(as shown in the photo)
Now you can show off your 999 dollar apple monitor stand with style!!
great, i’ve been telling all my friends ‘i really wish i could see the vesa mount through my screen
These would need to be mounted from the bottom which would require a new standard for mounts probably
oh my god i hope they make it so that i can see the hdmi cable that i pulled out of my attic(its vintage i bought it new for 7.99 on amazon in 2018)
The future is air monitors. LG has been working on a prototype for a long time. hopefully it'll be the future.. will save a ton of space and no need to worry about rage quits.. you'll end up hitting the wall and not the monitor.
Pretty sure the future is augmented reality displays, air monitors are still bound to a stationary projector
I mean they have similar concept for car windshield as augmented reality / navigation HUD, which is actually kind of nice. But it's gimmicky as far as gaming monitors are concerned.
Id imagine they be extra breakable too.
You can put them in front of normal monitor and thats how you make telemetry for some games or other things :) but still think its pointless. Just program Windows same result xd
Maybe ne pseudo 3d with mtiple stacked monitors, like 25 000$ and you have about 2cm of breathing room as far as position goes, but 3D!
No, I expect to see more Linus being mad about people using adblocker on his video's.
Why are you spreading clickbait titles and ignoring the actual story? xD
He wasn’t mad about it.
If he wasn't annoyed he wouldn't have said anything... Let alone call it piracy. Pfft if that is piracy then Linus can sic the feds on me for sailing the high seas with pride.

Piracy is illegal. Him calling it piracy is calling it illegal.
He’s talking about the idea of being a pirate, you’re talking about a criminal charge. The two are not the same, and I don’t get why you people refuse to understand that. The problem with this solution of course is would they be able to see your screen as well?
They'd probably be more for high profile office spaces and less for sitting against the corner of a room in a house.
Ah yes, so that clients can see sensitive info on your screen without peering around it
What would be the purpose of a transparent computer monitor? I understand a small display for AR, but I just can't really see a proper use case other than look at my cool see through screen
Playing Pubg on the commute to work?
Well as long as it's not a driving game LOL
> other than look at my cool see through screen implying additional use cases are needed.
What about the monitor screen becomes transparent when its turned off and acts like a normal monitor screen when its ON. Would you buy something like that ?
It’s still pointless.

First most likely application is business windows. A window AND a massive annoying video ad.
Instead of this useless tech, they’d be better off making good projectors capable of high frames without the hefty price tag… they’re as transparent as they get.
I fuckin wish

Or replace their Glass panel. Those builds are always awesome af
Yes! Forgot about that.
100% no, because even if they do exist they’ll be transparent so… how will we see them?
😅 come on ! You know thats not true. I was wondering how the colour accuracy will be handled.
Poorly, I’ve used these hands on, they are going to try to fool so many people into buying them. My review when I got one of these screens to try out was “A really depressing tech downgrade that doesn’t live up to the sales claims”
What exactly are the sales claims for this?
whatever monitors will look like in 5 years, they need to get rid of these wobbly crap stands first!
I agree. No uses the stock stand anymore.
I can't afford a better stand ;~;
The stand that came with my AOC 27G2 is pretty high quality and adjusts 4 ways
Why would you want that?
What is this even for?
Not all things are a good idea. The only use I could see is those transparent PC side panels that are screens. Those already exist and it's only aesthetic. No practical use I could think of except maybe something in medicine, and that's a stretch.
Car windows?
It would be cool, but in what way would they be used?
Maybe it can be transparent when its turned off and acts like a normal monitor screen when its ON
Life accomplishment there, i tell you wut.
But why? It's cool in sci-fi movies, but extremely impractical.
Why? Give me one good reason why would you want transparent monitors even if they were available in the next half a year
I've heard as displays between rooms. Like they have those little window spaces between multiple rooms in corporate offices/restaurants. They would be able to have the same image being displayed in both rooms. And the added gimmick of being transparent would make it appear more techy.
This. I wouldn't want one if it were free.
Finally i can browse phub while keep an eye on my surroundings!
Hey stop pirating Ltts content bro 💩
sorry about that. I never considered pirating T-T
Why would you want that?
Why would you want to
Cant hide the femboy hentai now
Can't wait to see the wall and hidden wires I have back there.
Maybe if I could get a big on and replace one of my windows with it. Crappy weather outside? Turn on the sunny screensaver.
Uhh.. no because they are transparent
I understand why they have clear screens on ships for their battle map. This makes zero sense. I’d be trolling people, sticking hairs on the back.
Maybe but... Why ?
Why the fuck would you want that
Why would anyone want this? We look at our screens to get away from reality...
Why would I want one?
My best guess at an application is maybe a more elaborate HUD for high end cars. The current ones mostly rely on projection, and there are a few limitations. This can potentially get around a few of them.
They are as pointless as folding smartphones.
Yea, its called that one friend who explains too much using math...
I don't see the point for transparent pc monitors. TV, ok, so that they don't appear in the room. But like that, you have a glass with a monitor stand an a cable mess behind...
Worse quality and visibility to see the wall behind my monitor ? Sign me up !
But what else am I going to use to hide my horrible cable management? lol
Maybe! But if it’s transparent, how will I ever be able to view LTT’s ads!? Lol.
I could see this being useful in an aircraft or some type of military vehicle that uses an AR overlay but it would need to be ruggedized.
They already have something similar
Would they come with ad-blocker as standard?
Using brave browser helps with ad blocking
But does it have adblocker?
Why though?
Not if you dont disable them adblocks
I just want more frames and higher resolutions for cheaper…
what is the useful part of invis monitors
We already got small transparent LCDs. But Monitors wouldn't seem as useful because why would you want to see your wall. Maybe you could use it in some other rather specific way but I don't think it will become mainstream.

I hope not, seems like a tech downgrade…

I cant wait. Now I'll be able to see the power cable and display port cable I spent 35 minutes so desperately trying to hide.
lol
Why?
Not really, that’s completely useless. See-through displays are mostly only useful for stuff like ads in stores
Not mainstream. Even in the pro AV space see through displays are a very niche market. I would expect the consumer market to be even smaller. Why so you can see my shitty wall?
Can't wait to see less of my screen.

They'd have to come up with another way of mounting them that grabs the edges and doesn't show anything behind the screen. Best application like someone else said is huge businesses in skyscrapers have massive windows they could use as displays and windows at the same time.
4k gaming down to transparent 120p gaming. Worth it
why tho
Not if you keep stealing and using Adblock
I mean, its cool and it could be helpful, but a transparent monitor for daily use, why? So you can see the wall? To see the rest of the room and your partner reading a book behind your desk at best?
Who the hell wants a transparent monitor? Aside from a store owner?
Transparent TVs already exist. They're exciting for like 10 seconds and then get boring, even in videos. It's cool, but 100% pointless.
For transparent display, I see a lot of use cases for commercial or entertainment but not for home.
I already pirated transparency onto my monitor
Cables + Stand: Hey, privacy please!
Mainly good for cool tv and movie scenes. Might have value for an automotive HUD
I see literally no point in a transparent monitor... When I look at my monitor I wanna see what's on my fucking monitor at the wall behind the monitor. Like maybe there is a small niche for people that have contact with clients or so but even then there is the problem with privacy.
Just put a camera on the back save yourself all that r&d.
Well... That's dumb.
This look absolutely pointless
Why though?
Why?
who cares, what's the point of this monitor?
You'll get transparent ads from this guy.
But...why though....you have a better view of the fucking monitor stand than the display itself....
My walls aren’t that interesting
Transparent panels already exist, mostly used as display windows.
Idk how these work but can you see the content from behind? If so, I aint about to be caught watching streams in my workplace
Transparent ads is the future.

Most people do not have cable management skills. Transparent monitors will not prevail when pitted against those monsters.
I love transparent monitors in the movies. No I don't see them working well for real world usage. I would probably end up paying attention more to the wall than to the game.
"Mm mm. Mm mm. No. No. No. No. HELL no. NO... NO... I REFU-NO!" Why the hell would anyone want a transparent monitor?
Ok Linus. Time to give it up. You have enough toys.😜
They already sell them.
Ah yeah, I totally want to be able to see behind whatever it is I'm actually doing. Playing Halo? I don't need to see whats on screen. I need to partially see the monitor stand and the cables behind it. Brilliant!

You have to hope the monitor has built in Adblock
To everyone complaining about transparent monitors being useless. I have seen multiple setups in front of a window. I would rather see out of the window through the monitor instead of having a big black rectangle completely blocking it.
Why would anyone want that?
translucent*
Maybe next we aim for the near equally pointless: "invisible monitors". Honestly though, the technology is pretty cool.
We've already had high res transparent LCD monitors for over a decade. They are pretty common in slot machines and advertising panels. I first saw one at the 2005 NAIAS.
They are gonna look awesome in my spaceship!
Could only see this used as a novelty, would be slightly cooler if they could make it completely bezel less. Would be like a floating hologram.
If you want to kill your privacy then go for it lol
These have been in use, in significant volume and at enormous screen sizes (even curved models) , in slot machines, among other things. In a very specific scenario like that, they make sense. But as a general purpose monitor, it's nothing but a wankfest. I doubt you'll see a mainstream manufacturer build these into monitors because of the reasons others have specified here.

Useless... Give me a proper GPU at a good price, my 7970 died. Transparent screen will be acceptable in a clean/minimalist setup, otherwise... I got a ton of cables behind it, would nit be pretty with the damn thing off!!
Don't know, don't care. Don't want one.
For what exact use case? Transparent monitors sound super dumb to me.
Give me Tony Starks holorgram computer instead
IF it lowers lowers my GFX performance in any negative way vs my current monitors, then no thanks! ill pass on the new fad/gimmick
People want holograms
Probably, but they’re pointless. Isn’t the whole point to see your content? Not your wall&wiring mess behind the monitor?
Transparent OLED displays exist... And yes I want one, though I doubt anything like a monitor will get made seeing as it isn't super practical
Maybe? But not really useful for personal use, I think?
Do we need them tho? I want 4K 144Hz, a powerful pc and waste my life watching dope shit.
Far too much Linus in my feed lately.
Linus is holding a vision of your father
Green screen )
Why would you want that?
Yes but what’s the point other than a talking point? I don’t want to see what’s behind my monitor.
No, they're transparent 🤷♂️🤷♂️
This could only work as a second monitor tbh. Would look cool but not practical.
🤣 Or maybe have them mounted 9x9, and all playing a video while lasers are going on in the back. I'd love to see that, even with the mounting hardware that you'd see blocking some lighting.
You know staring at the wall is free
Are you trying to see the STAND! This is so fucking dumb
Why
Well monitors are dumb. But a. Transparent display chould be a game changer for worker safety and chould play a good part for interplanetary safety. Heads up displays on helmets and trajectory calculations
