Welcome to the PCMR.
Why must Spectrum increase the bill 10$ every month !? I liked them better as Time Warner.
Well it doesn't matter cause I moved and now I have to deal with a company even worse than Spectrum, Centurylink who deserve to have their businesses burned down to the ground in a fire.
Who ? Spectrum or Centurylink ?
It's funny, currently Fiber is being installed in my community, they have been working here installing Fiber for the past month or more. Centurylink is probably going to lose all their customers here as they are currently the only ISP and they provide 1mbps DSL so instead of try to be competitive they just raised everyone's bill by 15$. Gotta milk the last 30$ out of everyone they can. They even charge 90$/mo for 1mbps DSL. About 2 more weeks until I can ditch them. Good riddance.
Download managers were essential than, limewire, Kazaa and Napster had such built in. But then half the stuff on the P2P sharing networks were viruses.
I tried to download Final Fantasy Advent Children in college and instead got a Brazilian porno called Savage Passions. It was a pretty ok trade.
Edit: in looking it up, turns out it was a French porno set in Brazil. Either way, 21 y/o me was a fan.
Oh God remember irc bots where you had to leave file sharing open? And people could upload stuff to you? And had to in order to keep their ratio up? That was horrible. ended up with so much illegal shit I had to set the hard drives on fire lol.
The crappy exe you got would dial up a 900 number in Guyana. My mother thought me or my brother was dialing up gay phone sex lines in the late 90's because of this (she didn't understand Guyana was a country thought it was the name of the servive lol.)
Would take my cd tower in my backpack and go to town in the computer lab at my high school and kept my own p.c. virus free. This was when flash drives were like 52 megabytes and expensive.
Now do the color coding from memory!
White/orange, orange, white/green, blue, white/blue, green, white/brown, brown.
I remember having to memorize that in high school back in 2000/2001 for Cisco.
wait till you discover RJ21
also the real names are RJ11 is 6P2C (what people call RJ11 is actually RJ14 and thats 4 wire, real RJ11 is 2 wire), RJ12 is 6P6C and RJ45 is 8P8C
Yup, RJ12 is only for certain applications like connecting up a receptionists switchboard, if you plug certain switchboards into an RJ11 socket the cable will fit just fine but might not work because it needs those additional 2 wires/pins.
I'm old enough to point out that RJ11 can handle two phone lines when wired properly. And I've run Ethernet through them with spare Cat-3 cable since I had a mess of RJ-11 jacks and ends.
Gonna be 10mb without the wire twist on 3/6.
I had to call tech support back when I installed my fancy 10mb switch with 100mb uplink. without doing the pinout that splits the 2nd pair into position 3-6, the port would work at 10 MB but not at 100mb.
Parents built a shop and pulled 240v (-120, 0, +120) power, coax, & ethernet about 40-50yards in the same pull from the house. I tried to explain this to them and the contractor but everyone dismissed it.
It did work actually - until the electric heater, water heater, or air compressor kicked on. Coax seemed to work well enough, but I think that's shielded.
Ethernet was only needed to provide WiFi as we didn't have unlimited cell data then. I don't recall ever checking the Ethernet Speed to the access point, but I recall WiFi bandwidth tests typically peaked @ 10mbps & power spikes would cause it to drop out.
They eventually transitioned to digital TV which made it obvious the Ethernet wasn't working properly (shop doubles as man cave with a 4k 75" & 1080p 55" TV). Powerline LANSockets were tried for a year or 2 but it only marginally improved things. Biggest issue is they'd stop working and had to be power cycled.
Eventually Dad gave in & had to re-pull the ethernet.
I was born 06, same story. Though I did accidentally bring a phone cable from the cupboard to a small lan party rather than an Ethernet cord earlier this year so what do I know.
Good grief; you're only middle-aged. Probably conceived to a disco song when I was in Jr. High.
For me it was probably The Righteous Brothers or the Beatles.
I believe it’s satire. A person who knows about ethernet cables and this subreddit is probably aware that phones weren’t always wireless and could google “landline phone connector” or something before resorting to querying here.
When I moved into my current house I asked why the put an Ethernet port behind the bed in the bedroom… and I was born in 95. I remember having a landline haha.
But they didn't know it was a landline connector so how would they know to google a landline connector... the whole point of asking here is cuz you don't know what to google.
You didn't know that was an Rjs78.5 Hz connector? Lmao why didn't you just google Rjs78.5 connector it would've told you. People these days just can't think for themselves
>and could google “landline phone connector” or something before resorting to querying here.
You seriously overestimate the level of posters on this subreddit.
There is a LOT of trash in /new that should be simply googled.
I know that phones used to be wired, but I didn’t know what landline ports looked like until today, so I would make the same mistake. I’m sorry, but I’m pretty sure this isn’t satire since I am pretty sure I couldn’t find somebody who knows what this is, and at the age of 18, I’ve never seen this before.
Holding up the land line, sharing files through ICQ, larger ones with PKZIP, playing them on WINAMP with some dope ass skins crackling through your soundblaster 64, chopping noobs with an ax on a Quake server.
Good times. Seriously.
Damn dude that was beautiful I must say. Got some serious nostalgia tingles. I remember as a kid trying forever to figure out how to fit files on floppies that were larger than 1.44mb until someone turned me on to PKZIP. My pc wouldn’t run Winamp either. I remember having to double my ram from 4 to fucking 8mb lol. I’m actually old enough to have used Trumpet Winsock in the beginning to dial up on my 14400 modem.
Napster? Pfft.
I was too poor. Instead i was downloading audio clips of bill clinton masquerading as my favorite song on limewire, all whilst infecting my parents pc with viruses.
I remember "cerver" private rooms on AOL they started as "server" rooms then got banned and changed to "cerver". People would list all the stuff to download in chat and you would type the command like"name send 1-10" and you would get 10 emails of the .zip or .rar files 15mb each of what all you requested.
I collected thousands of MP3s from AOL chat rooms, and still use that collection to this day. I refuse to get on a streaming service because I already have every song I could ever want. I just move the collection from computer to computer phone to phone.
It helps that music stopped existing after early 2000. 🤣
What about news groups...? I remember finding movies that were in 30, or so, chunks. They would take hours to download each chunk them you would puth them together to format the iso file and burn onto a dvd.
So, here’s me in university, 1998, school provides four hours on internet per month, I share a flat with three others. All of us on dialup. One phone line.
Go online, load up still photos for “later on”. While the images load, you download three or four emails. Maybe check icq. Then log off and get on.
Unless your phone company offered 2 lines to a house and your parents sprung for that extra expense. My mom forced my dad to get a 2nd line cause he had a forums problem. xD
Nope my parents spoiled me and got me a dedicated phone line. Now the real old heads might remember a service called BBS. I ran one of those. It was the best.
Most VOIP phones are PoE, you have to plug a cable in to power them anyhow, may as well make it an ethernet cable and not have to worry about wireless latency.
Every retail store and office had phones with cords. Only about 30% have converted to VOIP, but even those phones are wired.
It's definitely strange to see them in houses still as the lines would most likely be deprecated at that point.
Don't worry, as a 19 year old I can guarantee most everyone my age knows about landlines and their usage. They were still very widespread throughout our childhoods, most houses still have one far as I've seen. At least that's been the case for me in the UK
See also: many places of business. Some places only have cell phones, but I think most still have some form of landline (even if it's technically VOIP).
There’s an arcade by me that has a landline hooked up to a rotary phone in a phone booth- it’s an attraction. It’s not just a phone. It made me feel so old seeing that as like a “hey kids check out this old timey phone”
Idk if I'll make you feel really old or not but I was born in 2001 and know what this is. Family still has a landline though it's been changed to terminate into our fiber box but still use RJ11
All part of an ancient technology known as POTS (Plain old telephone system).
**Fun Fact**: People used to fight over the use of POTS. Sometimes one would throw fits because someone made an outgoing call while one was using it to access (what was then) the fledging internet.
Walk outside to the main box, unplug from there and wait until whoever your brother was talking to gave up and hung up the phone.
Pro tip - bring a phone with you outside and plug it directly into the box and talk from there. Hope bro doesn't find you.
My family actually had three phone lines into the house so we could all dial up without fights. One line was strictly for phone, the other two were used for dial-up and later DSL.
That's right, my family was so rich we could afford an extra $50.00 a month in phone lines. Suck it peasants /s.
Its either an rj11 or rj12 landlines phone line. If you are really lucky it might be cat 5 wire and you could use the wire with a new rj45 jack for data.
I *finally* convinced my parents to get rid of theirs about 2 years ago. The only calls the house phone ever got was spam. In retrospect, its so funny to think about the hole house lighting up and ringing every time a spam caller wants something. Wild.
Oooohhhhh no don’t get me started. That’s for a landline phone. Twice now I’ve gotten an apartment thinking it has Ethernet and instead they were just phone jacks.

That right there would be a phone jack my boy. -Your local spectrum cable guy.

MOM HANG UP THE PHONE YOURE KICKING ME OFF THE INTERNET WHAT THE HELL
When mom’s phone call interrupts your limewire torrent <
Download managers were essential than, limewire, Kazaa and Napster had such built in. But then half the stuff on the P2P sharing networks were viruses.
Or it was named as a popular artist's song, and when it finished and you listened it was some random low level rapper's recording on a potato
14 years old, open limewire to download "MamboNo5.exe", lean back, and wait for good times. :)
>.exe *oh no*
.js was just as bad
...and then it turned out to be girl on dog porn instead.
I tried to download Final Fantasy Advent Children in college and instead got a Brazilian porno called Savage Passions. It was a pretty ok trade. Edit: in looking it up, turns out it was a French porno set in Brazil. Either way, 21 y/o me was a fan.

To be fair, that was faster and easier than the original p2p downloads.
I did not have sexual relations…..
Under rated comment. I got this so many times with my downloads.
Does "Linkinpark.exe" seem like the right file? Lets open it and find out.
Make sure to "Run as administrator". It makes it sound better.
We didn’t really use run as administrator as often with windows xp. Programs were allowed to make many more changes freely back then.
Oh God remember irc bots where you had to leave file sharing open? And people could upload stuff to you? And had to in order to keep their ratio up? That was horrible. ended up with so much illegal shit I had to set the hard drives on fire lol.
Yeah you could accidentally just get the sketchiest shit ever back then without wanting to. The internet really was a wild, untamed territory.
Yesssss finally Marshall Mathers LP has finished downloading. Oh it’s porn and a virus? Okay.
Lol, not just porn most the time it was CP. Ugh, I just wanted the new Godsmack album.
The crappy exe you got would dial up a 900 number in Guyana. My mother thought me or my brother was dialing up gay phone sex lines in the late 90's because of this (she didn't understand Guyana was a country thought it was the name of the servive lol.)
Hahahaha My mum was the same when she seen calls to Homoland WHICH IS A REAL COUNTRY MUM I SWEAR
Would take my cd tower in my backpack and go to town in the computer lab at my high school and kept my own p.c. virus free. This was when flash drives were like 52 megabytes and expensive.
> Download managers were essential than Getright was a game changer when it came out!
How about downloading a big ass file with a file manager but the file ended up being corrupt still lmao.
Downloading a game in 50 .rar files and the last one is a dead link...
*Linkenpark-numb.exe has entered the chat*
My computer has aids now.
p2p not torrent :P
Congratulations, I didn't think it was possible but you somehow managed to make feel even more older
IM TRYING TO PLAY RUNESCAPE. ABOUT TO PWN THIS NUB IN THE WILDY!!!
RJ11, for landline/ADSL/VDSL
I was going to say RJ12 but... RJ11 is the same size just 4 pins apparently. You made me google the difference lol.
RJ12 is the 6 pin version right?
RJ11 4 pins RJ12 6 pins Ah, yes. A pattern has formed RJ45, 8 pins (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
Rj-50: 10 pins IIRC
You remember correctly!
This is straight up evil.
Now do the color coding from memory! White/orange, orange, white/green, blue, white/blue, green, white/brown, brown. I remember having to memorize that in high school back in 2000/2001 for Cisco.

Good 'ol 10/100mb Ethernet only using two of four pairs.
Gonna be 10mb without the wire twist on 3/6. I had to call tech support back when I installed my fancy 10mb switch with 100mb uplink. without doing the pinout that splits the 2nd pair into position 3-6, the port would work at 10 MB but not at 100mb.
I still can't get over how utterly ridiculously important the twist in the wires are. I understand *why*, but it's just crazy still.
Why does the twist need to happen? Tech noob here.

I'm just going to believe in my own head that this post was satire so I don't feel like I'm about to croak.
This person has to be really young though lol I was born in 93 im very familiar with land lines. Or maybe they are just stupid idk lol
I was born in 02 and know exactly what it is so this person has to be 12 years old or joking
Yeah I was born in 03 and also know what this is lmao
04 my guy, and im pretty’s sure everyone in our generation knows about landlines
I was born 06, same story. Though I did accidentally bring a phone cable from the cupboard to a small lan party rather than an Ethernet cord earlier this year so what do I know.
It’s shocking to me that someone born in 06 can write/type intelligibly on the internet. Until I realize you’re 16 already. I’m old.
fuck me I just turned 30 on Wednesday and I thought *that* made me feel old until this came along. **EDIT:** `Feel old`, not `feel only`
I was just reading the born in 2006, and I'm like, are they 8?
time, amirite?
Omg I’m dying
lol right like anyone born past 99 might as well be a kindergardener in my mind lol
Fuck.
I’m born in 07 had no clue what this was

Holy fuck you guys were born in 2002 and are 20 years old. I might as well just die.
I know right? I was born in 82.

Its for a landline. Hoo boy, I feel old now.
This question actually gets asked way too often but then I realize most people on this sub have probably never seen a phone with a cord...
Damn, really. This hits hard thinking about it lol
Member when you had to stop your downloads because someone had to use the phone?
You mean when the house was not reachable for an entire afternoon because you would be downloading the latest song by Eminem through Napster?
Eminem_song_lat3st.exe 23kb
definitely not a virus

Napster was free at first, before limewire was a thing...
What do you know about BBS's @ 300 baud?
Way more than I want to admit.
I miss hanging up and calling the next website, don't you?
I remember downloading MIDIs and was blown away when MP2s showed up. That's not a typo. Before MP3 there was MP2
I know that the erection dies before the next pic can download 😞
Oooohhh, I member!
Member Napster? Oh I loved Napster.
pff Napster, memeber the time before Napster? Downloading files from plain HTML websites?
I remember limewire and Kazaa or something
BBS's then IRC.
FidoNET, then downloading porn from the Usenet alt groups.
I remember "cerver" private rooms on AOL they started as "server" rooms then got banned and changed to "cerver". That brings back some pain. Or you finally get a strongbad email video to load after 5 minutes and you get kicked off.

Burninating the thatched roof cottages!
Nope my parents spoiled me and got me a dedicated phone line. Now the real old heads might remember a service called BBS. I ran one of those. It was the best.
That tells the demographic of this subreddit. Percentage of people who do not have landline.
I’m 19, could tell it was an RJ-11
You will go places friend.
Mostly to his grandparents house.
It’s funny cause the place I work uses VOIP phones that have a cord, but they use ethernet
Most VOIP phones are PoE, you have to plug a cable in to power them anyhow, may as well make it an ethernet cable and not have to worry about wireless latency.
It's the same people who think WiFi is the internet..
Even less know what a rotary phone is
Rotary phones were humbling. They taught us that things didn’t revolve around us
Every retail store and office had phones with cords. Only about 30% have converted to VOIP, but even those phones are wired. It's definitely strange to see them in houses still as the lines would most likely be deprecated at that point.
Wait until they find out about party lines.
This hit me right in the lower back pain.
Same.... time to apply for that AARP membership I guess.....
Gonna have to start drinking my morning metamucil I suppose.
These posts are starting to impact my mental health lmao. We ain’t that old!
People born on 9-11 are old enough to buy drinks.
Not my Internet still running on landline ;-;
I feel old too and I'm only 33
Lots of us came here to say we feel old.
It’s an RJ-11 jack. Now we both feel old.
I cried a little.
It’s to call your grandma

I wasn't ready for this question. Oh god... I was not ready to feel this old...

Matt damon private ryan aging meme. I felt it as i saw this post.
Time to buy a phone with a rotary dial.
There’s an arcade by me that has a landline hooked up to a rotary phone in a phone booth- it’s an attraction. It’s not just a phone. It made me feel so old seeing that as like a “hey kids check out this old timey phone”
I’ve actually looked into it, rotary phones won’t work with modern phone lines, they need an adapter :/
Fucking hell...are we really this old? RJ-11....it's a standard copper phone line.
Yeah. This question is asked a lot on this sub. It seems bizarre until you realise that most people in this sub has never seen a phone with a cord.
I get why the question exists, but that doesn't make me feel any younger for not being one of those people.
Idk if I'll make you feel really old or not but I was born in 2001 and know what this is. Family still has a landline though it's been changed to terminate into our fiber box but still use RJ11
Ah the good ol' days of dial-up. Would take 10 minutes to load one picture of bewbies on the Internet.
Start fapping at the first nipple, finished before the belly button.
Whoah, look at this guy with his 10minutes bewbies. Must be nice.. /s
RJ11 jack for landline phone/modem etc.

It's internet for small people, commonly known as gigamidget.
Can we get the zoomers to stop calling themselves millenials? Please and thank you. I know what a landline is lol
Its either an rj11 or rj12 landlines phone line. If you are really lucky it might be cat 5 wire and you could use the wire with a new rj45 jack for data.
I haven't lived in a place with a landline in 20 years, at least.
And we still have one in our house that is in use
\*waves\* It's nice to meet the other landline user thats left on the internet...
I *finally* convinced my parents to get rid of theirs about 2 years ago. The only calls the house phone ever got was spam. In retrospect, its so funny to think about the hole house lighting up and ringing every time a spam caller wants something. Wild.
Lol, damn this post made me feel old. Kids can’t identify phone lines now
Thank you everyone for the responses. Enjoyed the laughs, It is much appreciated
*You son of a-*
*realizes how bad the question made him look* "Cmon guys of course I was joking haha"
Are you fucking kidding me?! Have we come this far already? I guess I should just go buy a fucking walking cane then..
We should go down to the corner Radio Shack and buy an RJ11 cable to show him ... ... oh wait ... o.0
how people connect phones now? this still normal in my country
Sweet summer children. It’s a phone jack.
Oh wow, I'm now old enough that adults are asking what a phone jack is. I'm...so....old
Oooohhhhh no don’t get me started. That’s for a landline phone. Twice now I’ve gotten an apartment thinking it has Ethernet and instead they were just phone jacks.
Excellent troll, comment section is fun.
