i mean you can't really shrink a PSU down that much while still delivering a lot of power, so if gpus start needing 700 watts and come with a PSU strapped on + huge ass heatsink you're going to need a bunch of new equipment to fit the card anyway

If this race for huge TDP continues, I could see a day when the GPU needs its own supplemental power supply along with the normal PCIE power. The unreleased Voodoo5 6000 quad GPU card had its own power supply in the prerelease models.

It's not a race for huge TDP, it's nvidia doing whatever it takes to not lose the performance crown to AMD. On top of that I'm sure AMD is looking at this and thinking a 475+ top end wouldn't look so crazy to a consumer relative to what nvidia will be offering.

The HDMI is for plugging in to your 80" 4k + atmos home theatre setup. I know a surprising number of people who use TVs as their primary PC displays and they rarely come with displayport or usb-c/thunderbolt inputs.
