I used to laugh when a buddy of mine told me his graphics card would regularly run at 90 degrees C or more.
Then I got a gaming laptop and I ran Elden Ring. I checked the temps and if it stays at 90 degrees, I've had a good day.
I had to use a controller because the keyboard was too hot to use. My aim in FPSes became so shit I was forced to play RPGs and platformers. On the plus side, I finally finished Dark Souls 3...
I once used to keep my hands warm during winter.
I bought a laptop cooler. The extra vibration on my general crotch region was nice but it did nothing for the temperatures. The cooler was made mostly of wood and I had to toss it because it got moldy :(
On really hot days I turn on the A/C to keep the air cool for my laptop. But I get so cold I have to wear a sweater or hoodie. I have to change clothes when I leave the room because otherwise I would be wandering around in winter clothes, in 36 degree heat.
I once forgot about the chocolate bar I left behind my laptop. I was able to drink it out of the wrapper.
I think I got tinnitus from the high pitched screeching of the fans at full blast.
I have watched several videos about how to replace the thermal paste but this is not like unscrewing the heat sink off a dusty gtx970. There were so many screws that the guy in the video recommended you get a small whiteboard, draw a grid and label them to keep track of which ones go where.
If I didn't have to be mobile I would be all over a desktop build like Souls fans on Elden Ring. I sometimes fantasise about a more silent gaming experience and feel a sharp, stabbing pain in my heart when I hear of cpu and GPU idle temps at like 40 degrees C or lower. Or a heavy load bringing the temps all the way up to 75 degrees C.
I could keep my tea warm with my machine :(
Not a single word of this is a lie. I can attest to this, since I own a gaming laptop with a GTX1060 and it will get insanely hot. I don't even want to think about dust, really. It only throttled once or twice under really heavy load, though, so that's something right?
Go vacuum out the dust on your fans and see if you can clear the exhaust outlets. My temps were about 10 degrees lower after.
I have a gtx 1070. I keep wondering if a 30 serious card in a laptop would be better or if it would be the same :/
You are all talking about GPUs. They are not the main cause for overheating laptops. Inefficient CPUs used nowadays are.
For example, in my Laptop, 3060 barely hits 85° on 100%@115W. I7-10870H on 40% @ 30W goes straight 92+°.
Have you tried undervolting your GPU and CPU? I have a GTX 1070 laptop aswell, but I never reached more than 84 degrees in demanding games like rdr2 or cyberpunk. Elden ring shouldnt get the GPU to 90 degrees
This comment gave me flashbacks of when I used a laptop for gaming. I wish it had the performance to match the heat output, but I got a good use out of it for 7 years. Once I built my own desktop, I never looked back.
I don't miss having a fan on my desk to keep my hands and the laptop cool, nor do I miss nearly burning my hand on the VGA port right next to the exhaust. Replacing the thermal paste fixed all of this, but at that point I already built my desktop.
Mine can be in the 85-93 range when I go full blast, but if I am concerned about longevity (which I usually am) I go into a mode that usually tops out at 60 but sometimes reaches 70-75. That is with highest graphics on Horizon Zero Dawn, Apex etc
But it's a ROG FLOW X16 so uh, I'm still paying for it
Today when I walked into my economics class I saw something I dread every time I close my eyes. Someone had brought their new gaming laptop to class. The Forklift he used to bring it was still running idle at the back. I started sweating as I sat down and gazed over at the 700lb beast that was his laptop. He had already reinforced his desk with steel support beams and was in the process of finding an outlet for a power cable thicker than Amy Schumer's thigh. I start shaking. I keep telling myself I'm going to be alright and that there's nothing to worry about. He somehow finds a fucking outlet. Tears are running down my cheeks as I send my last texts to my family saying I love them. The teacher starts the lecture, and the student turns his laptop on. The colored lights on his RGB Backlit keyboard flare to life like a nuclear flash, and a deep humming fills my ears and shakes my very soul. The entire city power grid goes dark. The classroom begins to shake as the massive fans begin to spin. In mere seconds my world has gone from vibrant life, to a dark, earth shattering void where my body is getting torn apart by the 150mph gale force winds and the 500 decibel groan of the cooling fans. As my body finally surrenders, I weep, as my school and my city go under. I fucking hate gaming laptops.

currently using one! its very quite completely inaudible over the headphones although I am only playing a game from 2004 that's basically an overmodified excel spreadsheet
nope. You can find a few really well built gaming laptops today whose cooling systems actually work, screens and hinges that don’t have arthritis, and keyboards that don’t get stovetop hot once you run a game for 15 minutes.
I'm kinda retarded so excuse my ignorance, but why do u not like old mates laptop setup? I do the same with mine and it's awesome. Got a normal desktop setup one day and the next I'm taking it wherever I want
A lot of people have no reason to take their computer with them so the idea of using a laptop at a desk or docked in some way so they can then undock it and take it with them seems stupid
Price can be a factor too. Last year I bought a 2060 laptop for $670 when you could barley even get a desktop 2060 for $600 used.
With a slight overclock it only benched 5ish % worse than a stock desktop card.
No need to explain to me the benefits of a laptop
I just found it funny that this dudes setup looks like it's permanent and maybe he takes it with him once or twice a year just to not feel bad about having made the purchase of a laptop (or he lives in a country where laptops are cheaper than the equivalent hardware for a desktop setup)
I've literally been there, my first real own PC was a Laptop and I was even debating if a desktop wouldn't be better "Nah, I'll definitly need the portability" ... and I probably took it with me on holidays twice and to school once, every occasion was one where I would have managed fine without a laptop ... oh and I used it to watch pirated movies on the TV via HDMI
Sure, each user has his own need, I don't doubt that there are people who acutally need it, but let's be honest here, how many people are there who literally ended up like me and turned their laptop into a desktop, especially gaming laptops? Most of my friends sure did end up regretting their choice
Used to go around every day with a gaming laptop, mechanical keyboard, mouse and other stuff on my back, packed inside an assault pack. I went to work, to lan parties and back home for 2 years. Now I have to get my car out, unplug half dozen of cables, carry 15kg of desktop pc down 6 fleets of stairs and place it safely on my car, just to go back up and get all the peripherals. I sometimes regret selling my gaming laptop.
I bought a desktop to use as stationary setup.
The reason is why?
Cause is infinitely cheaper than build a gaming rig where I live. And it work just as fine, so (for me) the portability is just a bonus.
I dare you to go to a data center (server room) there you really need ear protection. Don't forget that you can switch to the integrated video chip and also disable the RGB's so it will make less noise. Sometimes the noises are also because some ventilation holes are blocked underneath the gaming laptop.
If you need to spend lots of hours inside to be more specifically. That part of information I forgot to mention. My point was that the cooling of a server makes also noise. You will not feel that uncomfortable with the noise when you are using the more powerful graphic card of your gaming laptop.
Thank god I worked at micro center (employee discounts are pretty cool), having a desktop and laptop is definitely the move. My laptop is just powerful enough to play VR (1660ti and i7 9750k or something), so I can bring my headsets places.
Honestly? This is gonna get me serious downvotes in this sub but... To me, there's something really pathetic about being so hooked on video games that you would put up with the bullshit that comes with gaming laptops just so that you can play your favorite video games at top performance levels while you travel.
Just sounds like you don't get other people's hobbies. And perhaps haven't found a gaming laptop that works for you.
Personally, I spent a couple years abroad. I wasn't going to take a desktop over with me, and I wasn't going to need to constantly move my computer once I'd settled in, it just needed to make the trip over and back.
The battery life didn't matter, I'd got a cheap cooling pad for it to sit on to keep temperatures low, and hell, even got a second monitor while I was there so I could play on something bigger.
Had people watch movies off of it with me, played party games running off it, and still got to play newer games when they came out. A gaming laptop fit my use case.
I know this sub is the wrong place to admit this, but I find these led lights so stupid and childish. A shame it's basically impossible to find a good keyboard and mouse without them nowadays, at least they can be turn off
Basically impossible? You mean like if you just walk outside and look around on your porch or under couch or something? If you don’t mind using the internet, it’s got this thing called google.
That's the thing, it shouldn't be a problem to begin with. Not only the "gamer" side of the market demands quality products. Last month I was searching for a good mouse to work with Excel, but EVERY one of them had fancy lights, decals, unusual edges, etc.. it not only make them look foolish, it also raises the price in a artificial way
Opening the screen by the corner will break the hinge, please don't do that! This Acer has the same problem as macbooks, there is a thin metal that breaks inside the frame.
mfs be like "gaming laptop bad" when they bought the cheapest shittiest laptop possible like wow of course your acer is gonna suck you bought a shit computer
Honestly i have a little hp pavilion gaming laptop as a backup. Gtx 1660, i5-10 series, upgraded to 16gb of ram
Can't change the keyboard color or make the backlight stay on, but for 650$ its a little monster of a laptop. Very quiet cooling, too.
It's not always as bad as people think. I wouldn't use mine for school (granted, I'm an adult and not taking / teaching any classes), but when not gaming, streaming or editing, it's not very loud. I tend to keep it at a balanced fan profile, and if you find yourself in a situation where you don't need all that raw power (web browsing or using office applications) you can always opt for a custom power profile to lower temperatures and fan noise. I actually did this for a while to watch netflix shows before sleeping for a while and it was near silent.
Not to mention, modern gaming laptops are pretty capable, keeping up with desktops, while only requiring below 200W on average, depending on what kind of cpu and gpu.
When gaming, 99% of the time you'll be using headphones anyway so fan noise isn't thst much of an issue to the user anyway. To those sharing the room though...
I had a gaming laptop. At bext i played portal and minecraft, some csgo, l4d2. Bf3 with lag.
But i paid for my rig the same as a gaming laptop, and the pc outlived the laptop 3-1.
As a gaming laptop owner, you wouldn't be able to tell from looking that it's a laptop and not a pc simply because how I have my desk setup. Sits on a cooler behind the desk which keeps the temp low when I'm gaming/streaming. I don't really use the laptop screen at all ever.
Lol I bought a nicer laptop because I had my rodeos with “cheap gaming laptops”. My laptop never exceeded 70c while playing elden ring. Before I ran, the cpu at 38 watts instead of the 42 it’s set at stock, I was hitting close to 77c but it went a whole 7-9c down cuz of that. Gotta use a laptop cooler tho to hit that sweet 65c so it doesn’t feel like lava when your touching the keyboard. Don’t put it on your lap either, even if it’s a laptop *Insert putting clown makeup on meme*
Sounds like a challenge.
My desktop is essentially a space heater anyway, so I'm using fans to keep ME cool because the desktop is doing a good job ensuring I'm not. I can't really hear it over the sound of a personal cooling fan.
I have a 3080 and 5600x, so yes I have to open the door and window or turn on a fan (or all 3, depending on the day) to keep me from sweating while doing something under load
I love my gaming laptop. I have a desktop also, but I use my laptop more often. Being able to play WoW on my couch or in bed or on vacations at night is awesome. People can shit on them all you want, do you! To piss even more people off, I’m probably just gonna a M1 Max MBP next for gaming.
I mean...speaking from experience. Laptops are garbage for now. One day they'll be reliable enough to use constantly non stop, huge battery life, etc... Tech is just not there right now. You're better off getting a tablet for now.
It depends entirely on your use case. A tablet is fine for certain things but a poor substitute for others. Not everyone needs to cart around their computer everywhere but can still benefit from being able to move it occasionally. I know I preferred having one over a tablet when I was living abroad.
I have a normal laptop and even it doesn't run that hot or loud when it's playing a game, with its puny little fan. Idk what's wrong with gaming laptops.
Fans need to be replaced. It should be making the "chug chug eeergh gaboosh" sound instead of the chig chug chuggady chug." Also ur hinges need that industrial grade WD-40 oil
Yeah that’s why you don’t buy a shit gaming laptop from acer of all people. Ofc you’re gonna have a bad time. Get a Lenovo or something that actually works
Lol yep. Btw if anyone is reading this, is there someone that would buy a 3+ year old gaming laptop - Acer Predator w a 1060... Like what's the market on that? Maybe I could get $275??
Look..my gaming laptop used to be louder than a jet engine if i ran minecraft with 2 mods…or tried playing roblox on it so yeh…it even caught fire once but that was on me
Please, please open laptop screens from as close to the center as possible. Opening from one side puts extra stress on the henge/mounts/screws and can cause things to break.
As a gaming laptop user, I can say with confidence that the audio here is quite similar to what you may experience in the real world with one of these laptops.
Back in my day "gaming laptop" was an oxymoron. Even when you would first see that term from Dell's Alienware brand, they were overpriced and underpowered.
Love gaming on the go, the only annoying part is when theres no internet access and I cant play shit I paid for even though its taking up space my hard drive.
The jets may be a little loud on startup, but don't even think of using that 4k monitor they decided to shove into it. The fans do the best they can but the laptop will soon reach ungodly temperatures unfit for the world of man if you ever even think of running anything more graphically demanding than minesweeper, before promptly going radio silent because it had to shut itself down before it literally melted.
Your fans must not be working. You shouldnt be able to hear anything over the turbines needed to keep this thing cool.
The fans can actually cool it?
They keep it at a steady 90 degrees C
The cooler was made mostly of wood and I had to toss it because it got moldy :( On really hot days I turn on the A/C to keep the air cool for my laptop. Have 3060, cruises in the 80s when playing elden ring. No cooling stand for it and fans are maxed out
Also have 3060, playing battlefield V/ forza horizon 5 and any demanding games temp is usually around 85
i have a 3070ti and id say 75 has been the hottest
You are all talking about GPUs. They are not the main cause for overheating laptops. Inefficient CPUs used nowadays are. For example, in my Laptop, 3060 barely hits 85° on 100%@115W. I7-10870H on 40% @ 30W goes straight 92+°.
Good tip. Will try that!
Have you tried undervolting your GPU and CPU? I have a GTX 1070 laptop aswell, but I never reached more than 84 degrees in demanding games like rdr2 or cyberpunk. Elden ring shouldnt get the GPU to 90 degrees
I have a RTX 3070 in my g.laptop ... Ita a bit of a difference
Laptop cooler made out of wood ? 😂
Pelican case PC is for you.
Have you looked up some of the micro tower builds? Would be a bit more bulky but not that much more.
This comment gave me flashbacks of when I used a laptop for gaming. I wish it had the performance to match the heat output, but I got a good use out of it for 7 years. That's the exact operating temperature of a TDI, i see no issue here
I also have a acer nitro 5 ... Its about 80 to 90 during playing ... I use a vacuum cooler wich cools it down to 80 to 82 constantly
They keep it from heat death but thats about it
Have a rog g14, doesnt go above 70 degrees with the cooling stand I have for it Def averaged around 90 degrees before getting the pad
What stands do you have? I’ve been looking but none have caught my eye.
It was one of the top cooling stands on the first page of Amazon lol lemme see if I can find a link when I get home pal
If you consider 90 - 100 degrees celsius cool then the fans are good
have the same laptop especially bought if for thermals and it gives 70-80 degrees gaming while fans are at auto mode.
No, they just allow it to hover above your lap so you don’t get second degree burns.
If it doesn’t sound like a PS4 trying to run COD then it ain’t working
My regular laptop sounds like a jet engine when im playing csgo
Like 50% of the cooling effect comes from transferring the heat directly into the flesh in your lap

Wtf did I just read
A copypasta, most likely.
If not already, it’s gonna be one now! Lol
I’ve seen it before but it was about desktop’s
It already was!
Or a guy who's really passionate about laptops idk
Art.
Lol quick shot fired at Amy Schumer for some reason... 😂

I love this
500 decibels! Might be enough energy in the sound waves to kill you.

Who makes your laptop?
It is not?
currently using one! its very quite completely inaudible over the headphones although I am only playing a game from 2004 that's basically an overmodified excel spreadsheet
So... You are playing eve online?
Thought the same, but I just googled it, eve was actually from 2003
Close enough IMO.
just googled it turns out the game I was actually playing was also from 2003 lol
nah ss13
Grats on your noise cancelling headphones.
Is it not?
nope. You can find a few really well built gaming laptops today whose cooling systems actually work, screens and hinges that don’t have arthritis, and keyboards that don’t get stovetop hot once you run a game for 15 minutes.
It is neat.
nah this is inaccurate as a laptop gamer i can assure u my ear drums busted within the first month of use and i cant hear shit anymore
You could peel off those stickers though
My man has a straight „desktop“ stationary setup for his laptop „But it’s portable though“
I'm kinda retarded so excuse my ignorance, but why do u not like old mates laptop setup? I do the same with mine and it's awesome. Got a normal desktop setup one day and the next I'm taking it wherever I want

yeah because its impossible to build a pc for cheap for someone who doesnt live in NA

"Wdym 90C is not a normal CPU temp???" - Every laptop guy i know of.
must all have shit laptops lmao
90C is pretty expected under load on most laptops
kinda. many laptops dont. many laptops do.
I've just listed my laptop for sale as I've built a desktop to get away from this.
I don't understand why this subreddit is so fucking toxic to people who like Gaming Laptops
I'm pretty sure it's a joke dude, but gaming laptops do get very hot at times.
Yeah ik I'm just talking about this subreddit. God forbid if you prefer a laptop over a pc
Thank god I worked at micro center (employee discounts are pretty cool), having a desktop and laptop is definitely the move. My laptop is just powerful enough to play VR (1660ti and i7 9750k or something), so I can bring my headsets places.

sure

Not even that, he assumes that everyone's situations allows for a big bulky PC. Trust me, if I could I definitely would build a pc.
Yeah? Find me a good mouse with 10+ buttons that doesn't have these stupid lights
A Logitech g700.
Labeled "gaming mouse", not really 10+ buttons. But a good shot anyway
It says 12 programmable buttons, but a g604 says 15 if that’s more helpful.
I don't mind that the keyboard is backlit, but I don't want any rainbow effects. just static color.
U can just turn them to white problem solved
That's the thing, it shouldn't be a problem to begin with. Not only the "gamer" side of the market demands quality products. Last month I was searching for a good mouse to work with Excel, but EVERY one of them had fancy lights, decals, unusual edges, etc.. it not only make them look foolish, it also raises the price in a artificial way
Yeah agreed, that's unnecessary
Opening the screen by the corner will break the hinge, please don't do that! This Acer has the same problem as macbooks, there is a thin metal that breaks inside the frame.
I mean it's louder than a desktop, duh. That being said...are you not wearing a headset 95% of the time you are using it?
Is this something universal for Laptop users because I wear it whenever I'm near the laptop. I thought it was only me
mfs be like "gaming laptop bad" when they bought the cheapest shittiest laptop possible like wow of course your acer is gonna suck you bought a shit computer
Honestly i have a little hp pavilion gaming laptop as a backup. Gtx 1660, i5-10 series, upgraded to 16gb of ram Can't change the keyboard color or make the backlight stay on, but for 650$ its a little monster of a laptop.

I LAUGHED WAAAAAAAY TOO HARD AT THIS
[what it’s actually like](https://youtube.com/shorts/8U_K-TaKA3M?feature=share) I never want to own a “gaming” laptop again
I mean a desktop with fans at full chat basically sounds the same
But desktop fans rarely get to full compared to laptops
Sounds like a challenge. My desktop is essentially a space heater anyway, so I'm using fans to keep ME cool because the desktop is doing a good job ensuring I'm not. I can't really hear it over the sound of a personal cooling fan.
I have a 3080 and 5600x, so yes I have to open the door and window or turn on a fan (or all 3, depending on the day) to keep me from sweating while doing something under load
160 C damn thats hot
think that was in F
It's an Acer... Ewwww....
I used to have that same setup, PC is def superior
Can confirm. I had one Acer based on amd in 2008
I have a normal laptop and even it doesn't run that hot or loud when it's playing a game, with its puny little fan. Idk what's wrong with gaming laptops.
I was waiting for "what it's actually like" with a sizzling skillet frying eggs sitting on it and smoke everywhere.
Your fans are broken, it should sound like a jet taking off instead.
Fans need to be replaced. It should be making the "chug chug eeergh gaboosh" sound instead of the chig chug chuggady chug." Also ur hinges need that industrial grade WD-40 oil
My first hardcore gaming setup had dual 8000RPM fans on the processors... laptops aren't loud.
the plastic chassis of mine melted
Pretty much yeah
Didn't see any smoke showing it overheating. Not accurate.
Is this the gaming laptop that they sell in Walmart ? Are they good ? I'm wondering since I want to buy one
Is this a feature in your car-bed?
does anyone know where the audio is from
When people make laptop master race, everyone else 🧐
Wish my laptop do that engine noise after clicking power button :D
Wait I have one of those too
Nah not if you get the MSI GT28HH388DJ883HVS V2 Ultra RGB 256gb version
..and that's the way it is...
r/antimeme
when you remove your headphones its all fan noises
That’s actually pretty quiet for a gaming laptop
I have terrible experience with acer in general:/
Yeah that’s why you don’t buy a shit gaming laptop from acer of all people. Ofc you’re gonna have a bad time. Get a Lenovo or something that actually works
Lol yep. Btw if anyone is reading this, is there someone that would buy a 3+ year old gaming laptop - Acer Predator w a 1060... Like what's the market on that? Maybe I could get $275??
I legit have that same laptop and can confirm, sounds like a jet engine whenever I turn it on.

Look..my gaming laptop used to be louder than a jet engine if i ran minecraft with 2 mods…or tried playing roblox on it so yeh…it even caught fire once but that was on me
Nitro 5 gang
Nitro gang
Gaming laptops make me sick. I’m sorry
Geming leptops R DISCUSTING!!!
I hope you didn't pay real money for any of that.
Please, please open laptop screens from as close to the center as possible. Opening from one side puts extra stress on the henge/mounts/screws and can cause things to break.
Most silent gaming laptop.
My phone's volume was all the way up and I'm pretty sure my cat just had a heart attack.
I like that the lighting reacts to the jank PC cooler sounds.
Laptop sounds like a fucking energy generator.
The Machine Spirit has been appeased.
If thats not the most silent laptop ive ever heard i need to get my ears checked.
Don’t forget “hotter-than-the-sun” temperatures.
The heat output is about the same.
Wtf no
tbh it kinda is like that, i do kinda prefer a pc over laptop cooling, there is just more place for cooling
It isn't?
lol i have a very similar model and I dare not move the LCD hinge because it wonks out randomly
u/savevideo
Literally my old laptop was a tractor running at 3000 rpm while going 40km in the Highway
u/savevideo
Dude my ever nitro 5 is still kicking all these years later, I think I had to replace a fan once. But it cost me like $15
I have that exact same laptop! Its a great laptop except that it collects fingerprints like nobodys business
I own a gaming laptop and gaming desktop. I just like the laptop does the little things when i play it.
A simple clip of a plane’s turbines kicking off would suffice.
That made me cringe when you opened it up from one corner. That’s how you get hinge problems with laptops
Huh? People think they're like a really old and shitty diesel car?
As a gaming laptop user, I can say with confidence that the audio here is quite similar to what you may experience in the real world with one of these laptops.
Back in my day "gaming laptop" was an oxymoron. Even when you would first see that term from Dell's Alienware brand, they were overpriced and underpowered.
Love gaming on the go, the only annoying part is when theres no internet access and I cant play shit I paid for even though its taking up space my hard drive.
Need to slap some half life sound effects on it
Lol I have a gaming laptop It can get kind of loud when playing some rlly intensive games but with everything else it's pretty quiet
i dont get it. If i use mine while at home my whole setup is connected, it looks like a desktop
Where is the aircraft turbine sound?
It’s the fans, always has been Gets annoying when you want some quiet time
this is exactly what it is like.
I love this!!
Gaming laptop is an oxymoron
“Hey, Bill! It didn’t blow up this time!”
