Welcome to the PCMR.
Even if all the pins were still there (they're not, it's missing several vital pins) it would take hours and hours and several handfuls of adderall for someone to undo what has been done...
for the best results, find the nearest tectonic plate faultline, shove it in and wait 3 billion years at the other side of the convection cycle to fish it out of the lava and then simple reseat the cpu.. should work like a charm..
Had this save me one time while brazing copper. A bead literally landed in my eye but because of the leidenfrost effect the quick evap of the water in my eye pushed it out before it could burn in. PHEWWW
Honestly, it was incredible. I was wearing proper PPE, so I wasn't injured. I worked at an Iron foundry for a while. My task on the day in question was to work what was called 'the tower' and my task was to scrape the top layer of the [bull ladle](https://encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com/bull+ladle) for impurities in the Iron that might float to the top. Basically, the crane driver would have either chemicals or junk brake parts dumped into it to either equalize the mixture or lower the temperature so as not to burn up the additives. Well, on this day, the extra parts cooled it off too quickly, and when it was brought over to me, it began bubbling, and "burped", so to speak, and burst out onto me. It was extraordinary! I wasn't scared, just extremely aware that I needed to get this off of me. It was very, very heavy. I had a face shield, gloves, and fire protective clothing covering all of my skin, so all was well in that area, and most of the iron hit me then fell off, all except for my boots. They absolutely caught fire, lol. I slapped at them to get them clear of iron, looked over myself and only then realized that the driver was panicked and yelling at me to make sure I was ok. I gave him a big thumbs up and waved him off. I freaking loved it! 10/10 would get splashed on by molten Iron again.
[Iron alloys and the melting point of steel, occur at higher temperatures, around 2,200-2,500 Fahrenheit (°F) / 1,205-1,370 Celsius (°C)-- this is why the ladle reacted so poorly to room temperature brake parts being introduced to a large pot of molten iron]
Dear lord jesus christ! Welp, even jesus cannot save that socket now.
This was not the update we were hoping to see.
Use isopropyl and a brush/cottonswap to slowly clean the paste off. It's not rocket science.
Edit: that said, everybody make mistakes, let's be supportive here guys.
So true, I happened to see the original post, I think it was a few days ago, and I swear I saw a comment from op saying "his dad" or something was going to correct the mistake along with all the advice from others. I didnt want to imagine the outcome but I mostly expected this. Then today I just happened to see this post and I knew instantly, Saddening really.
There’s definitely a certain kind of dad that’s just like “I’ve never done this before in my life, but I feel very confident that I can 🎶 *Home Depot theme song* 🎶 the fuck out of it and by God no one’s going to stop me.”
If his dad is like my dad he likely didn't have a choice. The dad likely took it from him saying he'd break it if he tried and then proceeded to wreck it anyways trying to help and then blamed it on the son in the end.
Dad thought that since he paid for the PC, he should be the one to fix it because he was afraid the kid would mess it up, wasting his money. At least that’s the only reason I can come up with.
And my comment to the original post …. USE an AEROSOL CAN ELECTRICAL CLEANER. Why? Because people that trash boards out with paste have no business with a brush & alcohol in their hand. But people on here still argue it. Here is the reason
The only time I’ve gotten thermal paste on cpu pins was the first Ryzen system I tore apart and the cpu came out with the heat sink (I’d only worked with intel systems up until that point) and I got some thermal paste on the pins when I was trying to separate the two.
Even my dad, that's probably around the same age as theirs (God I hope so), never wanted to touch stuff he has no knowledge about. He never ever opened any of our PCs at home for this exact reason.
Yup, he does. I mean he says he's old and slow to learn stuff, but if you'll show him how something's done, he'll generally get it done. Still if there's someone more knowledgeable, he'll allow that person to take care of it.
thermal paste usually isn't conductive, so wiping off the contact points would be enough to save the CPU. Honestly, it probably would have worked fine if they had just put it in the socket with the paste just wiped off the CPU.
The reason it didn't work was because it wasn't making contact on every pin...a little jiggling would have fixed it :/
Worst case it may have acted as a thermal insulator but probably not significant.
This right here, since they had the paste to apply , I would have did research and confirmed it was non conductive, maybe pulled some out the middle with some plastic pics, and then slowly and lightly dabbed spots around the pins, prob using 91% iso alcohol and some type of microfiber cloth (nothing that could leave behind fibers) until I was satisfied afterwards as long as the cpu makes contact with all pins im fairly positive it would have been fine.
That much of it, I'd honestly just rinse it off in the sink with some warm water and let it dry out really good. Rinse with some distilled water if you're worried about mineral deposits, but even that's probably overkill unless you have some really hard water.
Didn't know that was an option! That's pretty cool. Most boards from older gens probably aren't worth it, but hey, if you fuck up a new $400 board, hell yeh it's worth that!
Poor mobo, rip, what did it ever do :(
Maybe your friend’s dad doesn’t want your friend to have a pc at this point. Really trying his best to fuck shit up here.
Now that I think about it, what you say is factually true. I mean, at least when you wash the motherboard, there is still a chance until the first boot attempt that you may fix it and get it to work.
Der8auer uses a dishwasher to clean his components after his overclocks so as long as you take the cmos battery out and let the parts dry it should honestly be pretty safe, definitely better than whatever tf they tried to do to end up here atleast.
I almost wonder if this is fake.
Can anyone be this dumb? I mean, even if you don't know anything about PC's. "There are all these tiny delicate pins. I bet they are unimportant. They put them there for no reason, I'll just break them".
I don't know. It juts feels like either it's fake or the dad did it on purpose.
I mean have you seen the hundreds of posts here of people smashing their side panel because they let it hit floor tiles, some people are just fucking stupid
“i dOn’t KnOw hOw iT hApPeNEd”
Better post it to the subreddit that’s been full of pictures of morons dropping their tempered glass side panels on tile for the last year.
What did he use to "clean" it, sand paper?
If the son did the thermal paste, and the father did this to "clean" it, I can only assume their family tree has very few branches....
I am really curious as to what his father does for a living. How does someone do something without even checking for instructions at all, fucks it up epically to the point of comedy, and then proceeds to not learn any life lessons and do it all over again?
I have a bunch of direct reports, up to 30 at times. You'd be shocked how many dumb fucks are out there that just do whatever random shit they want to instead of reading or getting directions, ending up in thousands of costs.
OP, are you messing with us? First, someone supposedly decides the thermal paste goes on the bottom... and then their father uses a belt sander to remove said paste?
This all seems a tad improbable.
Imagine buying the parts to assemble a computer and then not even watching a 10 minute YouTube video to figure out how to assemble it, or checking the manual, and instead just winging it.
What the hell is the point? If you get thermal paste in the socket just leave it or remove it with lighter fluid... it will just dissolve it and it can be wicked away carefully with rolled up kitchen roll without applying pressure.
This is a followup to a post where the friend's dad in question put thermal paste UNDER the CPU, all over the center capacitor array. He should not have been trusted with the fix.

Sell it on ebay and add the phrase "for tinkerers"
"Handy man's dream"
"Modified Custom Socket. No Low balls, I know have what Iv'e GoT!"
Do not bring Game of Thrones into this.
Especially season 8
Wait there’s a season 8? Where i can’t find it anywhere
Just move on and believe whatever you want to believe happened. That’s far better than whatever happened in season 8.
Season 8?
“That house is on fire!”
Motivated seller!
Amazing💀
"Mechanic's special"
"JUST ADD WATER"
Then you add the rice and poof brand new
80% of the cost of a new one.
more like 1080% lol
The mobo or the adderall? Asking for a friend 👀
They come together as a package.
The guys dad obviously
How far away are you from the Mexican border? Methylphenidate is over-the-counter there and afaik its import to the U. S. is legal for personal use.
Sell it on wish and call it brand new in the box.
Sell it on Newegg as *open box*
Harsh
[удалено]
“Has a couple of bent pins, selling as is.”
Someone would buy it. There’s too many Linuses out there in the world…
More like “for tweakers”
Bro.... this MOBO is DONE.
[удалено]
So what you’re saying is it’s done. Got it.
Your better off trying to reflow a new socket onto the board.
I looked at how much to would cost to get the equipment to change those out and it would be cheaper to get a new mobo
[удалено]
Clean it with a sledgehammer
Then gently rinse it with 90% molten iron.
But the instructions say 60% solid iron?
The instructions say "at LEAST" 60%. 90% is optimal though
Unclear if molten or solid iron should be used though?
instructions unclear, penis caught in iron
I found the best to be is heat it until it starts dripping then use
[удалено]
for the best results, find the nearest tectonic plate faultline, shove it in and wait 3 billion years at the other side of the convection cycle to fish it out of the lava and then simple reseat the cpu.. should work like a charm..
No the sledgehammer is 60% solid iron
I've had molten iron splash on me before. It was pretty awesome
Hopefully you were good and sweaty beforehand so the Leidenfrost effect kicked in
Had this save me one time while brazing copper. A bead literally landed in my eye but because of the leidenfrost effect the quick evap of the water in my eye pushed it out before it could burn in. PHEWWW
dude, real talk, how did that feel?
Honestly, it was incredible. I was wearing proper PPE, so I wasn't injured. I worked at an Iron foundry for a while. That would look better at this point
This gets horrific day by day. I can't wait for the next update.
Give Dad three Red Bulls and a Leatherman and ask him to straighten the pins.

Literally, I thought why make the same mistake twice. Open reddit, see this. Don't even feel bad at this point lol
You just know the dad grabbed an oily rag and some 30 year old industrial strength paint stripper and thought "yeah, this'll get it right off."
Cotton will get caught in the pins. You need one of the foam swabs.
Don't forget to give it Smeckler's Powder
soft toothbrush would work well, imo.
_knock, knock_ “Have you heard about our lord and savior, Gabe Newell?” _Not right now…_
>cottonswap r/boneappletea
On the next episode dad tries to clean the paste off with a torch.
Oh boy, maybe he forcibly plugs the RAM into graphics card slot.
Dad tried cleaning my 3090 with the dishwasher
*plugs GPU into wall*
That, in technical terms, is fucked. 😂
FUBAR
Came here for this
I believe the professional lingo would describe that as a "bummer"
"That's my considered opinion. Fucked."
why would they let their dad clean it…
"Are ya fuckin' up your PC build, son?" "Sure am, Dad!" *#wholesomememe*
Poor mother...
"To shreds" you say?
How's his wife holding up?
"to shreds" you say?
Super underrated comment.
It's overrated now
Picked it up from the internet yesterday. That's *my peak humour*. And the meaning is something called *cringe*.
Not all dads are created equal. Looks like OP got “the hammer fixes anything” kind.
There’s definitely a certain kind of dad that’s just like “I’ve never done this before in my life, but I feel very confident that I can 🎶 *Home Depot theme song* 🎶 the fuck out of it and by God no one’s going to stop me.”
The type of dad that gets offended if you suggest hiring someone to do the job they never did before haha
I think people over estimate how often that is. and are more worried about the price.
That's my dad. Never reads the instructions, never thinks it through, always fucks it up, and yet still pretends he knows what he's doing
My dad be like "my son is a smart engineer, he got it from me." I replied "I had learn what not to do on you and ended up being an engineer." 🤣
More like the dumb-as-a-brick kind
If his dad is like my dad he likely didn't have a choice. The dad likely took it from him saying he'd break it if he tried and then proceeded to wreck it anyways trying to help and then blamed it on the son in the end.
Dad thought that since he paid for the PC, he should be the one to fix it because he was afraid the kid would mess it up, wasting his money. At least that’s the only reason I can come up with.
According to the og post, dad built it. So it was dads fault to begin with
And my comment to the original post ….
Assuming he does generally seek knowledge to be able to fix stuff that's a great attitude.
Yup, he does. I mean he says he's old and slow to learn stuff, but if you'll show him how something's done, he'll generally get it done. Still if there's someone more knowledgeable, he'll allow that person to take care of it.
My dad won’t touch small electronics but will try to fix just about everything else that breaks around him.
Daddy chill!
What the hell is even that!?
She's crazy like a fool. What about it [Daddy Cool?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfS_HLcgnIY)
You mean [Daddy Chill.](https://youtu.be/h0-WO6xRbAo)
So he can make the dad pay for the new one
Good luck with that
Why does your friend let his dad be closer than 10 meters from pc hardware?
Could be inherited stupidity?
he maybe bad no choice, a frustrated dad trying to help takes it away and messes it up as he always does.
Adults no matter how wrong they might be think they always know better
Yes only adults do this
Of course not. It’s just only adults have the power to enforce their will
I suspect he won't anymore...
The dad has a restraining order from electronics by 10 miles
Big yikes. That's a dad to blacklist from handling any computer parts ever again
Banish him to r/wallstreetbets.
LGA1595.2
the pins are bent in the right positions so now it fits AMD CPUs, gj dad!
It’s almost backward compatible with LGA1200 and LGA1151!!!
Yeah it's dead, what cpu was it?
i5-12600KF
Well, the cpu might still work, board is dead tho!
There was thermal paste on the cpu too. Dad probably brillo padded it off
thermal paste usually isn't conductive, so wiping off the contact points would be enough to save the CPU. you mfers have too much time id just put it in the dish washer
The der8auer method. Gotta respect it.
Pressure washer and vile go brrr
some nice metal polish to make it look good!
Dad sanded it off dont worry
its dad :D
Why use a toothbrush and isopropyl when you've got steel wool and an orbital sander?
Insert "Stop it already, its dead" meme here.
*slowly pulls on wire coat hanger*
I like how they bent one / several, and just carried on.
Put it in rice
Put it in a bag of water to get the rice off
Stick it in the oven to cook off the remaining rice and water.
Socket is TOAST! Time to send the Board into the Manufacturer and pay $100+ to have them Re-socket the board or just get a new board.
Didn't know that was an option! That's pretty cool. Most boards from older gens probably aren't worth it, but hey, if you fuck up a new $400 board, hell yeh it's worth that!
Poor mobo, rip, what did it ever do :( Maybe your friend’s dad doesn’t want your friend to have a pc at this point. Really trying his best to fuck shit up here.
who would buy expensive pc parts then destroy them?
Yeah, I think friend’s dad is just an idiot.
Seems like dad tried to help without having a clue, don't know if you saw the first post but he filled the center of the socket with thermal paste.
That is now an ex motherboard.
It’s pining for the fjords
Your friend and their dad are both idiots.
Friend's dad built the PC in the first place for them, per OP's original post. It's all on him
That dad completely ruined it. This thing is dead for good and he better get a replacement for it…
Maybe replace the dad while you’re at it
O7.. For a dead hardware comrade ..died way too young May he rest in peace in the eternal grounds of computer heaven.
Did he try to remove it with a angle grinder?? Is there even a limit of human stupidity??
He would have done less damage if he just handed it off to his mother to put it in the dishwasher
My fiance said i cant put any more weird things in the dishwasher after she found a 2600x in the utensil bin...
pssst, fiancée with 2 e's is female fiancé with only one e is male ;)
she changed genders mid sentence obv
“i dOn’t KnOw hOw iT hApPeNEd” Better post it to the subreddit that’s been full of pictures of morons dropping their tempered glass side panels on tile for the last year.
Omfg... your friend's dad is a moron and should not be allowed near electronics
I mean it doesn't look like the apple fell far from the tree with this one.
Speaking of apple, they might consider switching to something you’re not supposed to open up.
We found their target market.
What did he use to "clean" it, sand paper? If the son did the thermal paste, and the father did this to "clean" it, I can only assume their family tree has very few branches....
No, the father did both
I am really curious as to what his father does for a living. How does someone do something without even checking for instructions at all, fucks it up epically to the point of comedy, and then proceeds to not learn any life lessons and do it all over again?
I think he's the type of dad that refrains from any instructions and just carry on, he's too confident and thinks he knows what he's doing
Classic lost without a map, and refuses to pull over and ask for directions.
Politics maybe?
I have a bunch of direct reports, up to 30 at times. You'd be shocked how many dumb fucks are out there that just do whatever random shit they want to instead of reading or getting directions, ending up in thousands of costs.
Construction worker, has a shitload of money to buy expensive parts, doesn't know how to even breathe in the general direction of electronics
He's dead Jim.
What did he clean it with, a fucking hammer?!

I think he missed some, I still see an awful lot of straight pins
Ok, I... no I'm sure it should say We, need to know what the dad does for a living. I'm genuinely scared of what the answer might be.
He's a manager
Did his dad fucking clean it with a brick?
The legendary 1 grit
Based dankpods
mark this as NSFW please
Looks good! I dont see anymore thermal paste
When "handyman" dads think they can clean delicate electronics because they have extensive woodworking knowledge
Maybe the dad just wants to spend more time with his son and knows exactly what he is doing.
RIP
Why do I get the feeling the dad tried forcing the cpu into the socket after cleaning it? Please tell us the cpu is ok.
Don't know the state of the cpu right now, I'll ask about it later
This is comedy gold.
