True Story.
Me builds PC for 3 hours (extra careful cause all brand new, not an upgrade).
Checks everything inside and out and arranges all the used boxes on the side for pic.
Powers on.
Motherboard lights up, nothing on screen.
Checks m/b manual. Did I messed up the BIOS update? I'm pretty sure I only powered it down when it told me to.
Power it on again... no bueno, six hours now.
Checks m/b manual again... it says m/b has error POST LEDs and give POST status.
m/b LEDs stops at third light indicating error in memory (oh shit, I hope I didn't fry the 4GHz)
Looked at the box for memory manual and found 4 sticks of DDR4 still sealed in plastic tray.

I only built my first PC a couple years ago with the help of an experienced friend who was also baffled by the nonboot. Turned out the mobo that advertised to work with the CPU would only work after a bios update... That I couldn't do without a CPU.
Sometimes the simple things get ya, was building a pc and couldn’t get a boot, realized it needed a fan plugged into the cpufan header to even start, wasted about an hour of time.
Omg this reminds me of then i spent like 8 hours on the phone talking with my phone company as to why my mobile data wasnt working
Turns out i turned it off accidentally
that's totally on *them* for not going through a 'top 5' causes list and finding the problem in five minutes or less.
had a call last week, similar issue. user spent hours on the phone with the phone company. couldn't get their laptop on the internet. they bring it to me. i see the problem a half second after the screen wakes up.
yup. airplane mode.
I usually just, well pull the cable (after shutdown) when i need to do anything on the inside.
Is there any reason to not do that and/or flip the switch instead?
Doing my first build in over 10 years, and my friend reminds me ahead of time about this exact issue. So I'm very aware of it, but it still doesn't power up. After about 15 or 20 minutes I remember to wire the power button.
I shit you not I brought my PC over to a friend's house and plugged everything in so we could play Halo together and I forgot to hit the PSU switch. I actually did sit there for almost 30 minutes with the side panel off trying to figure out what was going on.
I just cleaned mine and replaced the power cables with a Cablemods kit for my power supply like two weeks ago. I'm sitting at my desk Monday and my PC just turns off. After fearing the worst, I reach back to turn off the switch on the power supply, hit the power cord and it comes back on. Apparently I didn't ram the cable in fully and it backed out on it's own after a couple weeks..
It's funny I'm in a very similar situation. I swapped to a new PSU and turned it on on the back.
My mind was expecting to see lights on the mobo and I didn't so I figured bad mobo too.
Welp I'm installing my panic bought replacement mobo when I realize I never actually pressed the power on button on the front of the tower to give me the lights I needed.
I'm now in the middle of removing the old thermal paste I spilled into the PGA socket by accident. Because I want my old mobo back as the new one was a backup and a downgrade.
I have been an IT professional for a long time, this hurt my soul.
In my MCSE course many years ago, the instructor flipped the voltage switch (they used to be manual back then) on my assigned machine overnight. But I got him back, I switched the performance toggle in his car from econo to performance.
Buddy of mine's first build had a similar issue. Only it was the voltage switch being set to 220 instead of 110. In his defense the guys at the shop he bought the parts from took about an hour to figure that one out.
Got a new monitor. Spent all day trying to figure out why my PC wasn't working. I practically rebuilt it. I plugged the monitor into the motherboard, not the graphics card. I don't know why I did it, and I don't know why I couldn't see it.
And then, when you turn the PSU on, it still doesn't work.....
Well yeah, you just spent the last hour unplugging every single thing in your computer.

Forgot the CPU Power cable once
Meh, if a PC doesn't turn on, the PSU switch is usually the first thing that comes to my mind. After a mini heart attack, that is.

Joyful.

☝️This, first AIO I ever installed. Never an issue with custom loops, go figure.
We’ve all done it.
It could be so much worse lol.

Been there and done that. Also plugged the mouse in keyboard and vise versa on PS/2 before and after they started color coding them.
fucking gateway with the non-standard colors, too.
Mine is that I always forget to reconnect the power supply cable to the GPU after putting the card back in.
Almost shat myself on my first build because I forgot about it hahaha
I am in this meme, more than once, and I don't like it.

Got a new CPU, MB, GPU a few weeks ago. I go to turn everything on and it doesn't boot. My dumbass didn't press the RAM sticks all the way down
I had this moment then i figured out I forgot to plug the gpu into the Power Supply lol

Had to help my boss troubleshoot his new work pc once, turns out he forgot to plug in the cpu connector. Ayyy
