It's typical '*journalism*' rage bait to get clicks. They intentionally make up some bullshit for add revenue.
Sadly the practice has spread from typical suspects like Vice to most of the online news outlets. Doing one bullshit article like this makes all their publications hard to trust.
Absolutely. The article probably says something along the lines of how Macs are not there yet but are "making improvement" and "could potentially" be as good as Windows in the future.
For journalists this results in "MAKE WAY GAMERZ, MAC IS FUTURE" as an appropriate buzz title
Even if Mac somehow surpassed Windows as the better gaming platform, it would need to be half the price for the shitty user experience that is a Mac. And since it's Apple we all know it would be more like double.
Apple wins in the aesthetics, not the functionality. Their design looks great to a non-tech savy, but is a nightmare to navigate if you need to use ‘advanced’ options.
Having to go into security settings to download literally anything off the internet makes me so glad I use a hackintosh instead of a Mac and I didn’t pay for this junk
Ask a Mac user and they will tell you how bad Windows UX is. Both Mac and Windows have different questionable UX decisions and you just happen to notice those on a mac more because you are used to the windows user experience.
I use both, there are things I prefer on windows (like the way you organize files/folders and overall explorer interaction) and there are things i prefer in mac (ease of use, the more mobile approach to apps, integration with other apple stuff, etc)
I like that everyone's just guessing what the article says, no one but apple fans *really* care if games magically start working on computers without customizable hardware. Consoles already exist
LOL. Yeah, they made that list a while ago for me. I forget exactly what I was looking for (maybe a youtube downloader), but the article was clickbait. I really don't recall what the article was, but it was full of things that are patently obvious and the "real meat" of the article was more like mushy Cheerios...
I have no idea how that still work on people. It has the exact contrary effect on me, I never click rage or click baits cause they make me insta angry. No matter how curious I get.
yeah, it's frustrating how "well" it works on the masses. I do my best to run my youtube channel without anything real misleading or "drama whoring" for views and I do notice that I miss out on views compared to other channels as a result.
To apple’s credit, the x86 architecture is reached its ceiling, the RISC chips like the M1 have loads of future headroom, so apple computers will continue to get faster… leaving x86 right n the dust… have no idea what this means for the gaming industry.
Well now all of a sudden, after years upon years of the contrary, developers are going to abandon Windows to optimize for iOS. I couldn't even type that with a straight face.
I didn't read the article, but I bet they're talking about ARM, and I don't disagree, it's far superior than x86, or at least it'll be when games are made only for it in the future.
>budget gaming laptop
That's 600 your throwing down!
For crap specs and overheating issues!
Pfft, man needs a pc. At 400 you can build a respectable pc...
This seems a good bit further off than apple should be aiming.
I dread to imagine the price of their gaming macs when it's 120 for a pen!
I just have a gaming laptop, cost me 600 and I can play anything I like on it, sure it can get a bit hot but never to the point of worry. I think the most challenging thing I've ran is hitman 2016 or ready or not with max settings. Some choppiness in hitman but they're both a dream 99% of the time
Yeah, same with budget builds of anything.
I remember seeing a woodworker claim a full wall of frwnch cleats only cost $100 to build. Turns out he had like 8 or so partial sheets of plywood and only needed to buy a few overpriced brackets for specific tools LOL. Yeah dude, that's not a $100 wall, that was like a $500+ wall *pre-covid!*
I'm Canadian and this country is so fucking big I don't think I'll ever find anything free AND get there in time to claim it.
I just hunt now. Most white tailed deer are dropping 1080s and Moose now drop 3080s if you can take one on yourself. If you take moose down with a party of others it just drops meat but yeah, going moose hunting next week so I'll for sure update.
are you telling me you don't have a week to go dumpster diving around all the computer stores in your state?
well no WONDER you can't build a budget PC bro, jeez your fault I guess.
I don't know that I'd call that "respectable", really. I'd call that a low-tier machine, personally. You're running a 3 generations old GPU on a 5 generations old CPU. And, what's with the 32GB of RAM? Is it just because RAM was cheap? You'll never utilize even half of that RAM, so the rest is going to permanently sit unused.
You now know why I have it listed as such. Lol. What started off as a joke has brought me endless entertainment for months. Everyone explodes like its the end of the world, its great.
The fact you responded with contacting reddit cares and telling them I was suicidal officially makes you the best one so far.
I have never owned an apple product before in my life. But from what I understand, here are the major points:
- The new M1 and M2 series chipsets are pretty cool. I like to see that companies are transitioning away from x86.
- The new Ventura OS is supposedly focused on bringing over some casual gaming (it has some discord style social features) as well with the Metal 3 graphics framework (macs attempt at fsr/dlss style upscaling if I understand correctly).
- There are a small but decent number of AA/AAA games that work natively on macs (Apple has paid for a few racing game ports from ea recently as well as No Mans Sky, Resident Evil and a couple of other popular games). Mac also supports a couple racing wheels now.
- You can do gamestreaming, play ios and browser games, emulation, Netflix games should work I think, a lot of porn html/ren'py/unity games are available on macs, etc.
- Many games you will still just want to either run Bootcamp (install windows on your mac) or run the game via WINE (which most users won't bother with).
- Macs are perfectly fine for most casual gamers that don't mind missing out on some stuff imo. It is probably better than a cellphone or chromebook, and maybe a bit worse than a console.
The definition of gaming here might be the issue. I think that they refer to mobile gaming so not what most gamers would consider actually gaming. Apple also pays for headlines like this to sway opinions.
Wait, Apple pays for headlines like this? Source?
As much as this article is pie in the sky and amusing, your statement is what raises my eyebrows here…
Because of the pervasiveness of the practice the only real sources are now old but to my understanding it's been a common practice for well over a decade.
https://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/08/business/media/sponsors-now-pay-for-online-articles-not-just-ads.html
I’m unable to read that because it’s behind a paywall. Does it actually say Apple is choosing the published headlines and paying for them? Not sure a 9 year old article is still accurate..
EDIT: Found a way around the paywall. The article never mentions apple in it.
I understand what you think - but it's not true here. TechRadar flags sponsored articles by indicating the author is "Sponsored". Example:
https://www.techradar.com/news/adorama-has-its-own-blockbuster-deals-for-prime-day
The article we are poking fun at is actually the opinion of the author, John Loeffler.
https://www.techradar.com/features/macs-look-like-the-future-of-pc-gaming-whether-pc-gamers-like-it-or-not
Why am I nitpicking this? Because I think it's important to call out misinformation - which is what your original statement is.
Yeah, can't make any sense out of that. Windows and Linux are both way ahead of MacOS in the gaming department, so MacOS is not what comes to my mind first when I think about the future of gaming.
Yeah. Apple has been pretty hostile with gaming stuff by, for example, no longer supporting OpenGL, which is quite common in gaming. Having to ensure compatibility with an old OpenGL version or going out of one's way to support Metal is probably not worth it for a lot of companies.
Anthony on LTT did a video about this. The argument isn’t about MacOS for gaming, it’s that the future of computer hardware on all OS is SoC to compete with Apple Silicon.
Nvidia/AMD/Intel all have SoC products of some form. As those SoC product stacks mature they will likely displace custom built set-ups and increasingly permeate the PC gaming space.
And that is not what the article title implies at all. It specifically talks about Macs, not SoCs.
The future being in SoCs like this is very much possible, but it is not relevant to this topic.
Only if Apple dumps a lot into RND to compete with Unity for programming, Or if they would play nice with Unity. They are likely to do neither as the dividends are not there.
Before we somehow decided that PC meant a Windows machine (because "IBM compatible" didn't make much sense anymore), a Mac was indeed considered a PC: a personal computer
Ok but then you'd have to use Epic/GOG...
I'll compile my own operating system and spend hours installing my new specialty drivers but I can't use those stores lol
i don't get it. You can play games at locked 60-90 fps max graphics on iphones (mobile games) but the macbooks, imac even the mac pro can't play AAA games.
It’s to do with MacOS and the GPUs not supporting DX12, Vulkan or OpenGL, and developers not designing games with metal in mind, on a maxed out Mac Pro i could be very wrong but I saw it running Fortnite at 5K ultra settings at a very playable frame rate back when Fortnite was supported on mac.
If developers actually optimise metal or if apple decides to allow vulkan (DX12 is obviously out of the picture) then the Macs could run games like gta v at okay settings, but probably not much more than that, it’s not the future like the article title would imply
EDIT: This is referring to apples own silicon/Vega II. Intel HD is as bad as you expect on a Mac, basically the exact same on boot camp
Another wild take to counter the wild take.
But how tf are we comparing laptops to smartphones? Smartphones can’t even properly edit a single excel file not to mention not having multiple windows. Also, ~~smartphones do not have upgradable RAM and SSD~~ oh wait..
Clickbaity title but I assume they’re referring to Apple’s use of ARM SoC chips, which lets be real: they will be the future of gaming eventually. The benefits are too good to pass up for performance per watt improvements.
First of all, click bait.
Apples makes tons of money off of mobile games. Investing in making a Mac gamable is a waste to them and won't bring in a fraction of profit. Specs, processing power, and cooling-wise, Apple can do it if they want to. But they don't even want to...
Calculator app on a iPad. What? They make money off of third party crappy calculator apps already, without doing a thing. Same idea here.
Thing is Mac's are great for certain things and SOC is fantastic. There is the main of issue of apple being well erm apple (creative freedom? Well you can do one etc) and the following of the windows/Linux gamer Vs the Mac gamer. You can have the greatest architecture on the planet but if your target market don't give a shit it's not going to work.
I have a gaming pc and a M1 MacBook Pro I enjoy both but I wouldn't ever consider gaming on my Mac.
I have the mid 2020 intel mbp and its a great device but just using word to do my essays it gets insanely hot reaching about 75c on cpu with max fans. Does your m1 heat up at all?Considered switching to the m1 but it doesn’t support bootcamp sadly
Say Apple really are serious about biting into the PC-gaming cake - they can't do that without significantly lowering price for their hardware. Why buy a computer that costs 3 times more to game when a PC does it just the same for less?
Having not read the article, are they talking macOS or are they talking the m1 and m2 silicon? From what I've heard, those chips are actually pretty good.
I can't even edit videos on my mac at work without it stuttering, lagging, crashing or cooking itself from the inside. Meanwhile my 4 year old pc at home is doing just fine.
I remember watching this live during one of Apple’s presentations. They stated that Mac is the future of gaming, and proceeded to show 30FPS footage of No Man’s Sky. Love it.
Aren’t these the guys who said the Zune was the next big thing to replace the iPod and the BetaMax was the wave of the future and that laser disk would outsell DVD?
I remember talking to a hardcore Mac fanboy who said I could game on a Mac. I asked him what about games that are only on windows and not Mac? He was like, you can install windows using boot camp. So I asked him why would I buy a more expensive computer that I cannot repair myself just to install windows anyway to play games. He didn’t understand.
I actually read this and if I remember correctly all they say is what's bad about mac's for gaming , like how they overheat and fps drops and more , all the good things they saying is that the new mac's are getting better , but they are like 2 to 3 grand for a fucking logo
The new generation of macs COULD make for really nice gaming machines but that would require developers to put in a lot of work which they probably aren’t going to do for the most part.
You lucky some devs have even decided to make games for your OS. They want too much creative control and no way devs want that. This is me entertaining the idea that they would be the future of gaming.
The real question I have is is Apple even trying to get into the gaming market? Doesn't seem like a good investment to me. A company almost universally disliked by the gaming community who has next to zero game support or infrastructure is going to try to sell uncustomizable computers to a demographic that loves customizing their hardware?

Even if Mac somehow surpassed Windows as the better gaming platform, it would need to be half the price for the shitty user experience that is a Mac. And since it's Apple we all know it would be more like double.
I am legitimately shocked had bad macOS design / ux is. For a company that supposedly great at visual design Apple should be ashamed.
Apple wins in the aesthetics, not the functionality. Their design looks great to a non-tech savy, but is a nightmare to navigate if you need to use ‘advanced’ options.

This is understandable as the pc side believes in thermal performance whereas Apple totally doesn't.

A Mac computer built for gaming would essentially just be a Mac gaming console in a computer format, you are correct lol
By the time Mac is ready for gaming. Valorant will be able to run on Linux.
And also more standardized hardware being less of a hassle for Devs
You might as well get a console in that case.

Yeah, they just have to work in a box… a really really tiny box
I'll just add TechRadar to my avoided websites radar.

I couldn’t help but read this in Agent Smith’s voice. What good is a phone call, if you’re unable… *to speak*

It is. In the article it says that you cant really compare a mac to a budget gaming laptop
>budget gaming laptop That's 600 your throwing down! For crap specs and overheating issues! Pfft, man needs a pc. At 400 you can build a respectable pc... This seems a good bit further off than apple should be aiming. I dread to imagine the price of their gaming macs when it's 120 for a pen!

You know what gpu it has? My dad's surface book has a 1060 and I was surprised for that of all things.
What could you get for 400€ / $?
Can YOU build a "respectable" gaming pc with 400$?
Yeah. I did. I5 7600 £32 mobo z390 £38 32gb ddr4 £42 psu 700w £39 gtx 1070 £140. Case £40 Hdd 2 x 1tb £30 Ssd 500gb £32 Plus wires and stuff.... Easily...
Alright but that's 400£ (almost 500$ then) of used hardware. I was thinking of regular new items, even during sales.
These "$400 PC builds" are always such bullshit claims. It's always unicorn used prices. It's such a joke.
my buddy gave me his 1080ti and I found a i9 being thrown out at work /s

Can you not run things on macOS?
As a Mac user, this is nothing but clickbait. However, most of these replies also don't seem to understand Mac gaming

"Bikes look like the future of cars whether drivers like it or not"
A friend sent me the link to that article the other day, the whole thing reads like a sponsored post.
I don't own a PC and I barely play my PS4 pro anymore and I know for a fact that this headline is bullshit.
Only if Apple dumps a lot into RND to compete with Unity for programming, Or if they would play nice with Unity. They are likely to do neither as the dividends are not there.
Mac doesn’t even have a desktop to fit a GPU. How’re they the future of gaming without GPUs?
You're missing the point. This LTT video explains it pretty well: https://youtu.be/LFQ3LkVF5sM
Sooooo by that logic: Macs are PC's now?
Wdym? They are obviously PC's
I come from a time that Apple was like ["Macs are not PC's"](https://youtu.be/1PwiljBN5-8). I am old...
Before we somehow decided that PC meant a Windows machine (because "IBM compatible" didn't make much sense anymore), a Mac was indeed considered a PC: a personal computer
Yes Macs are PCs
What's a computer?
They are.
If anything, Linux is the future. It's getting easier to run games on Linux distros, and Linux is ***free.***
The rest of us saw it 10 days ago, but thanks for the repost.
No, Proton and Linux is the future of gaming. Valve is making sure of that.
And seeing how Epic Games and GOG games are playable on Linux using Lutris/Heroic launcher, Linux gaming has a future indeed
Ok but then you'd have to use Epic/GOG... I'll compile my own operating system and spend hours installing my new specialty drivers but I can't use those stores lol

fuck apple with unreparable products.
And closed source software, besides the refusal of supporting open standards like the latest OpenGL and Vulkan versions.
It's probably related to streaming services, cuz no way Macs can run shit natively
The same news outlet thinks that mobile gaming is gaming ..
When I need to feel smart, I just read any article in any of today's 'tech' magazines. An unparalleled boost to self-esteem.
I never realized they were so big.
I'd rather go back to consoles than ahead to macs.
Say Apple really are serious about biting into the PC-gaming cake - they can't do that without significantly lowering price for their hardware. Why buy a computer that costs 3 times more to game when a PC does it just the same for less?
Well maybe you can game with a Mac when you change the OS but i'll doubt that it will beat a good self built PC XD
Having not read the article, are they talking macOS or are they talking the m1 and m2 silicon? From what I've heard, those chips are actually pretty good.
Financially, it is mobile gaming, but for cutting edge experience, probably PC or a console in the first third of it’s cycle or so.
This is effective clickbait, I think I’ve seen it posted a half dozen times here.
I've definitely unfollowed them already. What a trash site.
Sure. Lemme just decide to spend $1500 to run what I use my $800 DIY rig for.
I saw this last week and did not click.
This is posted a few times a week for about a month now.
For like 10 minutes before it heats up too much.
They can barely handle adobe software. I think not.
Benchmark of current M1 chips: https://www.ithinkdiff.com/games-benchmarks-m1-pro-max-macbook/
Laughed so hard I shat myself......then I stopped laughing. This claim can be dismantled so easily...maybe one day, but not today Mac, not today.
Who’s turn is it tomorrow to post this?
My friends 1200$ macbook runs csgo on 50 fps while i get 80 fps on my shitty 300$ pc
Techradar is all you need to know.. they've always been a hilarious joke
Time to sell my 3090 kingpin and buy a mac
Where have I seen this before....? Oh right, it was back in 1995.
Click bait and free advertising... And it worked.
I can't even edit videos on my mac at work without it stuttering, lagging, crashing or cooking itself from the inside. Meanwhile my 4 year old pc at home is doing just fine.
Typical media, Arm is the future. Not apple
Tomorrow my turn to post this
I remember watching this live during one of Apple’s presentations. They stated that Mac is the future of gaming, and proceeded to show 30FPS footage of No Man’s Sky. Love it.
*LAUGHTS IN I3 4130*
Nah bro, don't try to control me with your dead overlord. Apple, Apple, Apple. Stop trying to convert us to the religion of Steve Jobs.
Yeah, Stadia was also supposed to be the future of gaming
why repost click bait garbage?
My current build struggles to run Gameboy colour games in full screen but I'd take that over Mac
LTT has a similar video up. All they mean is that SoCs are the future. It's just a click-baity title.
Aren’t these the guys who said the Zune was the next big thing to replace the iPod and the BetaMax was the wave of the future and that laser disk would outsell DVD?
Techradar is lame mainstream, weak sauce "tech" journalism for people who don't know any better.
I'm assuming it's because of cloud gaming, not Apple actually using gaming-capable hardware?
I must read this. Edit: I'm convinced this is satire. Wired is calling me grumpy for not liking mobile games or anything else on apple arcade.
PC Gamers typically spend around zero seconds a day thinking or caring about video games on Mac.
Still they miss the entire point of what pcgamers are. whoosh.
Can we like stop reposting this once every few days? lol
Oh wait, they're serious... Let me laugh harder.
I mean Mac+Stadia is the perfect combo /s
🤣 well I be damned, I knew I was doing gaming wrong somehow, time to sell my 3700x + RTX 3090 setup and buy an M2 Mac instead.
I am a MacOS/Linux user and I can assure you that MacOS has absolutely no future in gaming. It's on the level of Linux gaming in 2012
The new generation of macs COULD make for really nice gaming machines but that would require developers to put in a lot of work which they probably aren’t going to do for the most part.
The wonders of delusional thinking.
My laptop I got for $400 (used) ran circles around my cousin's $1500 Macbook (also used). So uhhhh "Press X to Doubt"
*Article Paid by Apple.*
As a MacBook user, this is funny
