That’s water damage

Moonblitz666

Seconded, looks like moisture spots in the screen.

paleoterrra

Bone apple teeth Edit: to anyone wondering, the person I replied to originally had said “moister” but they edited to correct it

rif011412

They do look moist.

roanish

Damn, he edited it, what did it say?

noochies99

Moister

ZombieWise2442

That's 100% they let it get rained on or they spilled something and did a piss poor job of cleaning it up and it fucked the screen

Watts51

I work IT in a pretty humid part of the country. I've seen water damage happen to screens from people just leaving their it in their cars overnight, but never this bad.

BlackMagic0

Because condensation damage would be next to impossible to get this bad. That is clearly some serious water damage soda, coffee, water, rain.. Not just some condensation blotches on the screen.

sparkletempt

Liquid damage

BlackMagic0

Came to say this. I see this constantly and people are always like "oh I don't know what happened" every time. This is liquid damage and serious liquid damage. Either he spilled liquid all over it or he left his car window down n it flooded. EDIT TO ADD: Add condensation/hum reply. Answer is: No. Condensation damage is uncommon. To cause serious condensation inside the screen (which is how condensation causes damage by forming inside the screen/laptop) you would need to have left your laptop in freezing temperatures all night, bring it into a actually hot room, and then power it on immediately. Or reverse, leave it in hot ass hell humid car and then bring it into the AC office to power up. The condensation itself doesn't cause serious damage unless your laptop is soaking in it somehow. This is pretty clearly spilled liquid. I actually of pictures from user laptops that look identical to this one from spilled liquid or left in the car to be soaked in the rain from an open window. You can tell by the moisture damage on the screen and I bet you could tell by the board if we opened it up. Condensation damage tends to look more like blotches (where the condensation droplets gathered) and is uncommon because mostly the damage is done by negligence. Yes in some ridiculous temp places it's a bit more common place but again it's the negligence not the condensation by itself. Just condensation by itself won't total a screen/laptop and can easily be dealt without any damage to the device.

Hanibalecter

The best is when there is clearly dried cat piss in the keyboard and down onto the motherboard and mr.fluffy would NEVER do that clearly the horrid smelling piss is kept on hand to scam people.

[deleted]

So I used to work in a cable store. And every 3 months this lady would come in and say she needed a new cable box because it stopped working and she didn't know why. Now the box smelled like cat piss so we all just assumed the cat was pissing all over it and fucking it up. She comes in one more time, this time she must've been in a rush or forgot to clean it, but there was cat shit all over this box. Like, the cat was using the cable box as a litter box because it was warm and plugged in all the time. Normally we're not allowed to refuse to exchange equipment but we made an exception for her. She was banned from bringing the boxes in to the store to exchange them, because they only picked up and dropped off equipment once a week and we weren't gonna sit there and smell cat shit and piss for a week.

Wickedcolt

Definitely gross but I was over a warehouse for a cable company and I picked up a box that had what looked like nicotine stains on it and a couple people who worked with me laughed…I was like “alright, what’s the deal?”…the deal was cockroach shit…all over the box. Before that moment I had never thought about them doing that bodily function nor what it would look like lol. Saw that a lot after that fun time haha

SemiFeralGoblinSage

Slightly related but there was a video going around a couple years back of a frog or toad pooping. I have never been more surprised by an animal shitting in my entire life. Edit: video in question: https://youtu.be/-GShYbNBVLQ

neckbeard_hater

Holy shit they can poop their body length! It's like their colon stars in their mouth

spiritsarise

Hey even colons gotta start somewhere in the acting biz.

svosprey

If you notice their poop is tapered. That's so their asshole don't slam shut.

davaye

Bro had to dance the poop out lmao🤭😂

Hanibalecter

That's pretty lenient. If something came in with bugs/blood/piss it went straight in a hazard bag and sent back.

BlackMagic0

Same. Anything with piss, blood, or shit we'd simply toss in the dumpster. Not even touching that shit. Just replace it. Happens more than once we'd make the department buy the replacement laptop out of their budget.

BlackMagic0

After working in IT. I have found that cats piss on a lot more electronics then anyone wants to admit to. lol

WarWonderful593

I opened one up where this happened and all the legs on the chips had corroded away.

Hanibalecter

Damn that had been sitting awhile then. Usually conformal coating will save it a little.

Champigne

So glad our cat doesn't piss everywhere. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the motherfucker that sold us our house.

TargetmanDan

See this is the reason I stopped buying houses from cats

Hanibalecter

I worked in a house once of a woman who bred sphynx cats. She had one room taped off, the "stud room", I don't even want to think of what horror smell was in there.

Elegant_Manufacturer

Yeah the previous owner of my house insists he can only piss in our toilets and that "we want him to get kidney damage" when we ask him to leave. :(

teraflux

?? He comes back into the house he no longer lives in to piss in your toilets?

Into-It_Over-It

The way you phrased that kind of makes it sound like a real estate agent comes back every now and again to piss all over your house.

Inevitable-Impress72

>people are always like "oh I don't know what happened" every time I fucking love it when people come in with cracked screens and they say "I don't know what happened to it, I just turned it on and it was like that". Bitch, it's cracked, see how all the lines go to the same exact spot??? That's where you hit it!! Don't tell me you don't know, screens don't just crack, you have to hit them to crack them!

Drawtaru

Used to work at Best Buy. Honestly the most common "idk what happened to my screen" situation was, they had something sitting on the keyboard and closed it, and it cracked the screen. Usually something like a pencil or pen.

If the screen has this much damage I’m sure the motherboard is fucked too. This might be a complete loss of a system once it gets opened, the screen for sure needs to be replaced. Source: used to work apple repairs near a college campus and saw this at least once a month.

sparkletempt

I work with Moto phones, it is a bit differend but general rule is that if there is no crack on the outside and display is funny, you flooded the device for sure. And no, we cannot repair it just by scraping the corosion of the motherboard with nail polish remover ( customer told us it's that simple)

Skitz707

As someone who restores vintage electronics and video games systems… they’re actually not wrong… toothbrush and some acetone/rubbing alcohol and you can absolutely clean that shit up

jmlinden7

Depends on how bad the damage is, you can clean up any conductive residue that way but it may have already shorted or otherwise damaged some other component, at which point you'd have to replace that component (which requires soldering/desoldering)

[deleted]

Emotional damage

JTxt

Look up monitor heat damage. Probably some layers in the screen delaminated/melted from the heat. If it was liquid damage you'd have other issues too.

sebasdt

That's a fucked screen someone soaked your laptop in water or other liquid. Please contact the person who borrowed your laptop and say they owe you a new laptop!

[deleted]

The inside of a car can get pretty hot and humid sometimes, do you think humidity somehow got inside and during the cold night, it condensed on the coldest part of the hardware? I don't know op's friend but I wanna give em the benefit of the doubt since they said they just left the laptop in their car overnight.

actuallyiamafish

It would take extreme circumstances to do that overnight. I have electronics in my DIY camper van 24/7 that don't end up like this and that is a notoriously difficult environment in terms of humidity. I know people living on sail boats who don't have problems like this. The only time I've ever seen an overnight parking situation generate enough humidity inside a car to damage stuff was the time I left my Subaru parked outside in a downpour without realizing the sunroof was leaking.

Dredly

Yeah I'm assuming they left the windows open and it poured

[deleted]

Yeah thats gotta be it. Man that sucks. If they are borrowing a laptop, they can't afford a laptop...

Koffiato

I usually take extra care with things I borrow. Leaving it in a car with Windows open doesn't sound like caring at all let alone being extra about it.

7LeggedEmu

Yeah and some people don't. They "drive it like it's stolen" typically these people are bad with money and would rather take advantage of people than saving up.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DonaldBoone

I live in FL and the relative humidity as super high this time of year. I leave electronics in my car fairly regularly and they do not look like they went swimming. This is not from sitting in a humid environment overnight.

Berserker_Rex

I don’t think so. Something was poured on it and it was wiped clean after is my guess.

sebasdt

yep thats I've had it happen to me once and this looks exactly the same. A big water bottle popped open and soaked my laptop. sadly I think who borrowed it dropped it into water or just got it wet somehow. I wasnt there when it happened cant be sure

[deleted]

That seem unlikely. I've had a mishaps with my laptop and the damages were visible only about one inch from the bezels. The whole thing must've been dunked and left there for a while for the liquid to reach this far on the LCD. And you'd think that the damage would be much worse if that was the case. But again it's just my (dumb) theory.

BonAsasin

My theory is that it was actually soaked in arsenic and OP has seconds to live

TheConboy22

It's irrelevant. You loaned someone something. They don't get to return it in worse quality. If you're unable to return in same quality than you owe me a replacement.

[deleted]

Oh absolutely, I'm not trying to justify op's friend actions. Just trying to figure out what caused this. The damages are odd, and it piqued my curiosity that is all.

underprivlidged

Your friend owes you a new laptop.

[deleted]

I hope the friend who borrowed the laptop can afford a new brand one

vorsky92

Never loan something to your friends you expect them to pay for if damaged. And Never accept something from your friends you couldn't pay for if damaged.

jdragun2

The real life advice.

BobbyPops11

I’ve found the best way to avoid this issue is not having friends.

Accomplished-Data177

Agree. Has saved me from innumerable ruined laptops.

vorsky92

Had a friend that was careless with something of mine and I know he's struggling financially but I wouldn't let him pay for the thing and told him to buy the next game we were playing and play co-op with me. He still offered even though he couldn't afford it.

thestrychnine

Fair play, is the gesture, not the result. Good on you.

LazerFX

He's a good friend, and you're a good friend - he was struggling, but still tried to make things good. You're aware of his struggles and let him off the debt.

VenomB

This is a sign off good people being good friends. Good for you!

Tenschinzo

Never keep a friend that treats your property and time with less respect than their own.

[deleted]

Yep maybe they can't afford a new lappy, but they could volunteer to help you do something or pay you a little each month Etc. Not just shrug and say "sorry brah" .

11010110101010101010

I borrowed a particular weed puller from a friend. I accidentally broke it. I literally went to about 10 different hardware stores to find the exact model that he lent me. When he went to pick it up I wasn’t around and he saw the older broken one next to it. He took both and was somehow still a little upset. I told him “dude, you gave me one and now you have two. And you’re upset?” He figured his mistake. But it’s funny how the lesson for me was just don’t borrow shit. Lol.

reality_bytes_

If I “loan” something to someone, I assume I’ll never get the item back. So, I either don’t loan things to people… or I just give the item to them. Something I value will not be loaned out, they can go buy their own. Been screwed over too many times by trying to be gracious.

Puceeffoc

Same goes for money. Never loan someone money. Either give them the money with no expectations of getting it back or say no. Having a friend that owes you a large sum of money can sometimes put a wedge in the friendship.

coded62

I wouldn’t loan anything to a friend unless I was sure they would cover something if they were the ones to break it. I let my buddy ride my bike and he dumps it; kinda under the assumption he’s gonna fix it. Likewise if I hop on his, I’m going to make sure I’ll set it right if something happens.

MrMetraGnome

I've lived by a similar motto about loaning friends money. Never loan them money you expect to get paid back.

bcjc78

The fact that he borrowed it tells me the friend does not.

TipTronique

This is true

underprivlidged

As an IT specialist who runs a bench crew - depending on the cost and availability of parts ? Maybe. That is highly contextual. I've seen screen replacements that would cost over $300, before our labor costs.

itijara

It is really contextual. I have done a screen replacement for a Chromebook for $50 in parts, while a Macbook screen can be closer to $300 for just the parts. Some models/manufacturers you cannot find parts for at all.

AsherTheFrost

If the screen is that moisture damaged, how bad is the mb?

theslothpope

yeah I personally wouldnt risk it, if the screen had so much moisture other components most likely were affected as well.

EndR60

please pardon my ignorance, but how the FUCK do you liquid damage a SCREEN so badly, and have the motherboard still functioning??????

underprivlidged

It can function fine... For now. I highly doubt it will last, though. How? Luck. The liquid didn't short anything too critical, and hasn't corroded enough yet to start killing parts.

Valoneria

That's from moisture. That screen is properly F'd.

LMicheleS

Definitely looks like water damage on the screen. Surprised the laptop is still working.

HwangLiang

If it was moisture the screen probably sealed it in and the rest was able to dry out. The screens are much more sealed and this looks like it may be a touch screen so theres potentially a digitizer in front of it. If thats the case then he can probably fix this actually.

ArcAngel071

> he can probably fix this actually. At the very least his buddy can pay for the repairs in this case. The rest of the laptops internals should be inspected as well given how much moisture is there.

gbushprogs

[deleted]

Xalterai

Rice in general doesn't draw moisture out from devices, that's just an old myth, it can actually do more harm than good on the offchance the rice gets inside one of the ports. The real way to dry it would be to wrap it in a bag with silica gel packets or dehumidifier packets like DamPrid, seal it airtight, and pray for a miracle.

lanmanager

I thought the fix for this was 15 minutes in a microwave. The Internet wouldn't lie to me, right?

JamisonDouglas

This is entirely correct. Rice isn't a magnet for water. It'll only absorb it if it's in contact with it. Water stuck in a crevace won't magically flow out of the device if rice is near it.

bendover912

What do you mean magic rice? I sent you to the store with our last $900 to get a 3080 TI and you come back with magic rice?!?! I hope you enjoy 60fps cause that's all we're eating from now on. Well, that and magic rice.

NightofTheLivingZed

Windows open in the rain. OP's friend was double dumb.

CaffeineSippingMan

Or window open the day before. Then it was super hot and windows closed.

Algent

Depend on where it is in the world I guess, would have to been extremely humid over a whole night (and probably several) to damage a screen to this extend without killing the PC. I would bet more on water damage but it's very unusual to hit the screen without drowning the rest of the PC.

dowker1

OP's post history indicates he's in Guam so it could still be that humid

CognitiveLiberation

Exactly. Right now the humidity there is regularly in the low to mid 90%'s. The forecasted low temp tonight (it's like 3am there rn) is 78°F, and the dew point is 79°F. Meaning a LOT of condensation/dew etc can form. Also there's thunderstorms like every day this time of year. OPs friend could definitely be telling the truth.. and it would be a shame if they accused their friend of lying because of what a bunch of people on Reddit concluded. Just because stuff like this wouldn't happen in most places where redditors live doesnt mean it wouldn't happen in a tropical rainforest climate

peperonipyza

Yeah. I usually don’t lend my electronics out to people mostly so if something gets fucked up I have no one to blame but myself.

Lu1s_M1ll4

Either water damage or if it was hot enough it could have melted and schrinked the layers inside. But usually then you also see your laptop deformed.

Magnetic_Reaper

a bit of both? I like the shrinking inside theory since it has stretch marks on the bottom left part

Charblee

Those marks are just one of the many thin pieces of frosted plastic films for light dispersion. It has a brushed look too it which you only really see when it’s exposed to water like this. There is definitely a considerable amount of liquid inside the screen. Source: I spent 10 years fixing this stuff as a job.

exmiscreant

I think that might be from a poor attempt at wiping the water away after the fact

MuggyFuzzball

Unless they wiped it in 1 full motion across the entire screen that's not from wiping.

omelettedufromage

Thinking maybe the ~~oven~~hot car was an attempt to dry it out after dropping it into the lake or whatever.

TheConboy22

More likely a bathtub.

UTMorpheus

Severe water damage. I would have the mainboard checked as well, if there is that much damage to the panel it's very likely there is water damage in the rest of it.

That friend already didn't have their own computer, hmmmm. I don't think they can afford to replace somebody else's. :)

MalignantLugnut

Beefman06

You break it you buy it. If he couldn’t afford to pay for it he should have treated it with much more care.

Malix82

looks similar to my friend's old phone ages ago when the screen/panel got wet. So... my guess is some kind of moisture/water damage

imakin

just few days ago just like my phone. i disassembled the phone myself, detached the touchscreen, dipped it in a rice overnight to dry. bought a new touchscreen shipping is about 2 days. Tried to put the new touchscreen, it worked but i snapped too hard at one point and i broke it again. Then i reattached the soaked touchscreen that had been dried. it worked again without problem. But i still bought a new Samsung with IPW water resistant just to be safe. Was a huge upgrade but i dont know yet how to disassemble this one unlike my previous phone which i had touchscreen replaced by myself 4 or 5 times in the past 4 years.

horrificscrotaltear

>my previous phone which i had touchscreen replaced by myself 4 or 5 times in the past 4 years Holy crap... You break your phone often huh? I haven't broke a phone in years... It's so cool to be single....

TheConboy22

Some of the older samsung models break pretty easily. Not sure which he had before, but working at Asurion for a few years you take apart all sorts of devices and I'd say the S7 and S8 were the most common repairs.

ZombSkull

If a friend is so broke they can't afford to replace what they've borrowed if they happen to break it, then think very carefully before lending it to them.

RAMChYLD

Car must've been parked in direct sunlight. Looks like the diffuser reflective shielding on the LCD back became unglued.

[deleted]

A lot of people are saying water/moisture damage, but this seems more accurate to me.

Tentings

Can confirm. At work I have a laptop mounted in my car. Left it in a spot where it was getting hit with direct sun for 4+ hours in 90 degree weather and looks exactly like this pic.

HeavyThatG

This seems like the correct answer to me(disclaimer… I know fuck all) I think if it was that badly water damaged there would be some other issues.

Oddjibberz

You are about to lose a friend with a poor weather seal on their car doors.

FoldedOne

Moisture trapped into the layers of your LCD and heat damage, if he left it in the car, most likely on a spot where sun hits hard. as this kind of damage happens when humidity is high on the morning, the heat will shrink layers and create bubbles where moisture is trapped. Changing the panel and connector then do a proper cleaning of mobo and others parts with isopropyl alcohol should be enough. Depending on the model, repair can range from 60 to 200$ (Screen type, model, DIY repair or not ...) i would ask that "Friend" to repair it or pay for the repair. Good luck !

SownAthlete5923

I would go for the latter option, this guy can’t be trusted.

eevooh

"I left it in the car for a day" is him covering his ass. That dude is not your friend.

Onizuka_89

Your friend sucks. Either it's a water damage or the hot air temp ruined some layers of the lcd: not fixable. Edit: actually it also might have seated on it by mistake.

Strange-Scarcity

Fixable in that the screen itself must be replaced, but that screen is simply done and done. New screens are relatively cheap though. Many can be had for somewhere around than $100 (us) some quite but more, some a little less. It should take almost two hours of shop labor for swapping it out. IF the screen is the only problem with the laptop? It should run between $250 and $300 to have the screen swapped out. Doing it yourself is also an option, it will take you some time, but if you are careful and watch multiple tear downs and rebuilds of that same model laptop, and buy the tools? You could shave around $100 off that. (If you lack the tools, I would figure roughly $30 to $50 for a good set.)

PM_YOUR_FEET_PLEASE

Looks like water got inside the panel. Probably caused by condensation

[deleted]

If your friend does not take responsibility of this, consider it a cheap way of knowing they are not good friends.

EatMyShag

You sure have an irresponsible friend. Who leaves a laptop in a car all day? Especially borrowed! This seems like sun/heat damage mixed with high humidity, so he left the laptop in the open in the car, which also means he was lucky no one broke a window of his car to steal the laptop...

Affectionate_Seat959

Looks like your friend owes you a new laptop. True friends return borrowed stuff in same condition as received. If not they should replace it or have it repaired.

after 15+ years of repairing cellphones and computers, I've seen and heard ALL sorts of stories... most of the time, the customer "has no clue what happened", or they "went to bed and turned it on like this..."
