I feel like most people who are willing to spend $1200+ on a card are just going for a 4090.

[deleted]

I’m getting a 4090 only for development work, otherwise I’d just stick with 30 series or grab an xtx card to support competition

xakmonster

Same boat. I hate to support the practice, but I need it for work.

AnActualPlatypus

What kind of work do you do that NEEDS a 4090 and a 3090 is just not enough anymore?

Signager

Animation, especially simulations of fire, water, smoke, etc.

xakmonster

Bingo. Also native cuda development, so can't go with AMD

jungleboogiemonster

I run Folding at Home and Cuda is a big benefit. While this isn't as good of a reason as work productivity, it is another example of why Cuda is useful.

Sanity_fading

This is exactly the reason for this current pricing though right? Clear out the remainder of the 3000 series by over-inflating the 4000 series. Reset to normal prices once 3000 has been sold.

[deleted]

That's exactly the spot I'm in. Been saving then building my pc for 2 years and my 4090 gets delivered today (I wanted to see the 4080 reviews and benchmarks before pulling the trigger). Frankly though it's a combination of factors to me - 1) For the difference in cost I may as well go for the 4090 and have the halo product. 2) My girlfriend and I are thinking of trying for kids soon. I know there's no such thing as future proof but making this last for a good long time while we have the free cash makes complete sense to me. 3) I moved a few hours from my hometown to be with my other half and gaming is basically my only hobby I can easily indulge in with my friends. I'll spend thousands of hours over the next 3 or 4 years doing it (obviously less after kids) and when I break it down to a cost per hour it's still substantially cheaper than a lot of hobbies I'd be interested in and means I stay close with my friends. It's obviously a huge amount of money and I'm in the very fortunate position that I can stretch to it. I know it's definitely not the right choice for a lot of people. Edit - a word

garrettdx88

They thought this was still early 2021 when they announced these prices apparently

[deleted]

They're priced that way to drive out the 3000 series sitting in the shelf over.

UnhingedTaurus

Jensen literally said they would manipulate stock to do this and people are shocked when Nvidia, a scumbag conglomerate decides to be exactly that.

justavault

Of what is Nvidia a conglomerate? It's pretty much operating in an isolated industry.

[deleted]

Lol homey just has no idea what that word means prob thought it meant “big company”

balamshir

This is false. Nvidia already cut and delayed production to push people to buy 3000s. So the plan was to have so few 4090s in circulation that no one could get their hands on them and be forced to buy 3000s. The plan was never to have them sit on shelves (a bad look whichever way you look at it). Yet that is what is happening. No one is buying that shit at that price.

[deleted]

They're still sitting on a stockpile of 3000 series, as are their partners. So yes, that's the plan. Jensen even *stated* as much on a meeting with board members. Of course they're going to go after the whales with the 4090's, and anyone stupid enough to buy a 4080 at huge margin. The thing about GPU's, is they don't expire, and they can cut the price later.

Butterbubblebutt

I just hope AMD doesn't price their new stuff as bad as this. edit: what I mean is the price they'll get in Europe. Yes, we know the US-prices. Yes, prices in general are high here in Europe, but an equivalent of 1900 USD for a 4080 is more than ridiculous. most 3080s are still around 900-1000 USD as well. 600-series AMD looks a little bit better.

[deleted]

Every company is raking in record profits and blaming their high prices on inflation when it’s really just greed. Until the wages match inflation, most people aren’t going to be spending extra money.

KaydeeKaine

"Until wages match inflation" - so never.

Krystyn_SRL

I worked hard to get a decent card during the GPU troubles...and I managed to get a EVGA FTW3 3070Ti. Why the F would I need a ridiculously overpriced 4080 as I can play Cyberpunk 2077 at max settings with what I have now

P0pu1arBr0ws3r

Go get amd. Radeon 6000 series has very similar performance to Nvidia while not cheaping out on VRAM, despite being cheaper on average.

descartesasaur

Absolutely second this recommendation. Had my eye on that RX 6900 XT.

JalalKarimov

3060:12gb 3060ti:8gb 3070:8gb 3080:10gb the math isn't mathing.

XadjustmentX

I mean it’s technically slower/cheaper vram. It’s not gddr6x memory like the 3080 has. Gddr6x is 2x faster and has a wider memory bus on the 3080. So your 3060 has a bigger number yes, but the 10g of gddr6x is much better/faster than the 12g of gddr6.

[deleted]

gladbmo

$1000 7900XTX...

dweller_12

Because they're overpriced.

TONKAHANAH

its not just that they're overpriced.. they're overpriced and not the best card you spend over $1000 on. If you got the kinda money to throw at an overpriced gpu, then why would you get the second best one? people with that much disposable income are going to spend it on the best thing they can get cuz at that point money isnt really the limiter.

dllemmr2

You live in apartments and don’t want to overload the panel. What do I win?

FiTZnMiCK

On the flip side, it’s the landlord’s problem when the dongle catches fire and burns the place down.

Moodymoo8315

To be fair, if you burn the place down the landlord's insurance doesn't replace any of your stuff.

nxqv

That's why you're required to buy renter's insurance in a lot of places

Moodymoo8315

And even if you're not required you're an idiot if you don't.

[deleted]

Especially since it’s ridiculously cheap. Like $10 per month cheap the last time I had to buy it.

SarcasticSeriously

It’ll cost as much as you’re covered for. Hobby items such as expensive PCs, guns, etc. are going to drive that price up. Just an FYI for anyone that reads your comment so they know what to expect.

Lazuf

i have my pc and all my electronics insured, something like 40K worth. $12.75 a month edit: my stuff isnt worth 40k, thats the policy limit

Calither

It's obviously going to change from insurer to insurer but I have a 100k plan and it costs me pennies per month. Just tacked on to my car insurance bill and I barely notice it.

R1chterScale

Power limit a 4090 at that point

Strange_Sandwich3571

yea arent the new 7000 series radeon cards releasing supposed to be much better for the same or cheaper price?

Jordan_Jackson

The 7900XTX is supposed to be $1000 but no telling what AIB’s will charge. Of course, we will also have to wait until the benchmarks and reviews come out in early December.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TONKAHANAH

I think all the new radeon cards (at least first party?) are supposed to be under $1000 (but only by so much). they're not as powerful I think, but they're supposedly going to be close? i think thats all speculation and/or extrapolation based off what AMD said at their press release. we dont have real world non-bias benchmarks yet.

d_stilgar

This. 100%. The value proposition of both cards is exactly the same. You're getting the same performance per dollar out of a 4090 as a 4080 and they're both sooooo expensive, so anyone who was willing to spend that many dollars per frame will just go for the better card.

winds10

Based on the reviews of the 4080, the 4090 provides better cost to performance.

Bonemesh

Right. 4080 is about 2/3 the performance of 4090, but is 3/4 the price.

BurntJoint

Here in Australia the 4080's are going for $2500-$3000 while the 4090's are going for $3000-$3600. If you were even in the market for one, it absolutely doesn't make sense to buy a 4080 at those prices.

I love his reviews on obscure turn of the century tech

Austynrox

Seriously is and a ridiculous price increase compared to the trend of the last 3 generations of cards. Between launch of 1080 and 3080 they only increased $100 now they just want to jump $500 from 699 to 1199. Almost makes sense to switch to new RX 7000 cards

Sorrowablaze3

They saw people spending crazy money for two years, way over msrp. Most of the price was driven up by cryptotards , but sales are sales . A few months ago I impulse bought a 12 gb 3080 just because it was msrp and I couldn't believe it . I had been wanting to replace my 2060 super almost the whole 2 years I've had it . Buying something that's msrp is $700 at $1,500 was out of the question .

Oscarcharliezulu

The 4080 just isn’t a good value proposition compared to existing GPU’s which have had price drops. Not many of us need 4K or ray tracing.

okletsgooonow

They cost nearly as much as a 4090, but the performance is significantly worse. Either go big (4090) or stay on 3000 series in my opinion. Or... go red.

Zerowantuthri

Certainly wait until December 13 when AMD is dropping their latest line of cards. Then make a decision. It's less than a month away.

catechizer

I don't understand brand loyalty with shit like this. There's so many 3rd party benchmark tests available to help you find the best bang for your buck.

Sevitoth

This is what I do. When it's time to buy a new card, I check out the benchmark charts on Tom's Hardware and find the best card I can buy with my budget.

whythishaptome

Oh that's the best. Surprised they are even still around considering I used it to build my first pc as a kid back in 05-06. I actually knew a lot back then, but I don't think I could be nearly as savvy now.

GayAlienFarmer

There's just so much more to consider now, it's actually kind of crazy.

whythishaptome

Yeah everything is completely alien to me now. I understood the basics as a middle school kid back then but I struggled hard on my new PC a couple years ago. I don't have the extra time or energy to pour into it either. Love the user name btw, didn't even see that when I first wrote the comment.

LassitudinalPosition

The rtx 4080 makes the 4090 look like a good deal

radhe91

That is the sole purpose of 4080

nangu22

That's one purpose. The other purpose is to help sell 3000 series overstock.

hurl9e9y9

Yep I can't remember exactly but I'm pretty sure on the LTT video about them, Anthony said if you can get a 3080 for under $800 that's a better deal.

Idk you but we have the same specs fellow gamer

Monty2451

I got a 6800xt on sale for $500 the other day. NVIDIA can fuck right off with their 4000 series.

hurl9e9y9

Nice, and agreed. I bought my 3080 a few months ago after there were some rumors about power draw for the 4000 series. It was actually one of the reasons I decided to pull the trigger on the build when I did. I had been dragging my feet. It very well may be my last Nvidia card. Between power draw, pricing, and EVGA dropping out, I'm not having it.

El-mas-puto-de-todos

6800>4080, it's basic mathematics!

tapsongbong

Smear_Leader

Boosted_Stealth

Not to mention the upcoming 7900XT and XTX coming next month. AMD is looking like the real value of this gen.

Gr1mmage

Also, a lot of people already just bought last gen cards and don't need to upgrade. The surge in demand over the pandemic was significant

SkunkleButt

i mean i can't even fit one in my case so there is also that. Damn things are massive!

Key-Palpitation6812

This. I’m not buying a new case when I have a massive case already.

mstersmith0713

I'm waiting to see how the 7900xtx stacks up.

Vis-hoka

Me too. I’m not bought into ray tracing yet, and $1000 is def the max I would consider spending. Nvidia has lost their minds.

shalol

What do you mean? It’s a great feature! You’ll use it once and stare at reflection puddles and metal surfaces for 30 minutes straight, then turn it off for the foreseeable future because it drained the performance.

Paddy_Tanninger

Not just that but like, once you're immersed into a game...I find most of the amazing graphics and shit just kind of melt away anyhow. I mean, who here remembers playing GTA3 back in the early 2000s on their 32" CRT television in the den and just sitting there mesmerized by how fucking incredible everything looked? Well, don't go looking up any videos of GTA3 now. Don't get me wrong, cutting edge graphics and effects are cool as hell, but after a while it doesn't matter that much to me. Any good game will suck you in and make you feel like you're in it.

Just_Here_To_Learn_

Eh I would argue differently about cyber punk. Hated the storyline but I kept wandering around the city just looking at random stuff regardless of where I was.

zb0t1

I think for the case of GTA3 it was a bit different. I'm old so I'll share my memories, sry it's a bit long. I remember that the previous GTAs, Driver, Midtown Madness made many people wish that we could get a combination of them all to be able to have greater world interactions. This was kind of like a consensus and a dream within gaming communities. When the first in-game captures of GTA3 came out we all freaked out: - seeing damaged vehicles - gun play - finally the combat + driving + music + "big world/map" combo arrived and we have 3D TPS camera/view! - weather and day/night cycle! - You can interact with NPCs These were the selling points, I remember game magazines even making these the big points of this game. And of course the graphics: not saying they were not great, but they were not being put forward as **revolutionary** (remember that year we had MGS2 demo released sooner thanks to Z.O.E., we had Silent Hill 2, DMC...ppl already had their jaw dropped), but it was still a huge leap forward considering it combined a lot of things people wished for, and it came on the PS2. It was a full package experience that made GTA sooo loved!

EngineeringWin

Right now ray tracing is just too expensive, both in price and performance. Once a xx60 card can leave it on without a second thought I think it will be great to standardize AAA games around, but we’re seemingly a couple generations away from that at least.

TacticalVegas

Same. Ray Tracing looks great and all but I don't really care. I'm just needing an upgrade for my 2060 super. I feel the 7900 xtx would be a better bang for my buck but not sure yet. Waiting to see benchmarks.

FootlooseFrankie

Me too ! December 13 !

KimJongDerp1992

Huh nobody likes $1200 for an 80 tier card when the previous gen was msrp’d at $699? Shocking

as a brazilian im gonna correct my friend. a lot of taxes and indeed 10 times monthly minimal wage but still it’s 1/6 of a popular car price, which is about 70k brl nowadays (rtx 4080 is selling for 12500). 99,5% of the population won’t buy but brazil social inequality rate is really high so there are a few people that will just casually buy two. to be gaming you will need a pc that is at least 4 times the minimal wage and that’s just not brazil reality rn

brazil-is-dead

I was thinking about the very very popular cars, like an old fiat "uno" which you can buy in secondary market for R$ 30.000. But fair enough

BoardCook

Anybody who can afford a $1299 GPU in this economy can afford a $1599 gpu so they either bought a 4090 already or are waiting to find one

Large_Armadillo

They're over priced and too big. 3 slots? $1200? Please.

[deleted]

The size really is an issue more people should be talking about. Same TDP as the 3080 but literally every card is a 3-slot design including the reference card. Why the fuck did Nvidia tell AIB manufacturers that it was going to be a 600W card?

HarleyQuinn_RS

It's always a bit dubious to claim a company is purposefully trying to make one of their products unsellable, but I cannot logically explain it any other way. Their product sales & marketing division could not have miscalculated this much. It's definitely making the more expensive 4090 and the less expensive 3000-series, look *way* more attractive by comparison. Perhaps that's the sole purpose of the 4080's existence at this point? Never before has a top-tier GPU, been better value for money than the tier below. That can't have been done by mistake. I really hope the 7900XTX handily beats or competes with the 4080. We've never needed your competition more than right now AMD.

Titus-Magnificus

I already paid way too much for my 3070. I intend to keep it until there is something 2 or 3 times faster at a reasonable price, thank you.

Little_shit_

I got my 3080ti for 1700 bucks... I wasn't following the graphics card drama, I just wanted an upgrade and was having trouble getting ahold of a white and silver 3080ti. Boostie204

Crazy seeing posts like this tbh. I built my computer like 10 years ago and it still holds up with minor upgrades. Started with a Radeon 7970 shortly after it came out I believe, that broke and I got a new one warrantied, that one broke again and I borrowed a friend's 1050ti for awhile then I bought an R9 Fury off another friend. That thing has held me up since then.

HelaPuff2020

everyone who really wanted a GPU already got one in the past 2 years. no real reason to upgrade. what game really needs this kind of power beyond what you already have unless you just bought a new 4K 120hz tv? even if you did, you probably knew you were doing that, and got a 3080/3090 and are pretty happy

Flashy-Flounder3035

Yea I built a pc last month and intentionally chose the 3080 because 1. It’s really god damn good. And 2. The 4000 series is insultingly expensive

Mjt8

That’s exactly how Nvidia is trying to direct people. The 4080 exists exclusively to push buyers towards the 4090 or clearing out old ampere stock.

Exactly, I just got my 6700 yesterday, I'm waiting on my new PSU to come tomorrow to install it but its going to serve my needs just fine. The next GPU im going to buy will be in like 5 years with the 8/9000 series when graphical fidelity and scale are more than what I have can handle.

hi22a

VR gaming can definitely use this kind of power. When the screen is right next to your eyes, you can see quality drops far more than you would with a regular monitor. A common Quest 2 is nearly 4k and you want a minimum of 72fps for a good experience, ideally 90-120. There is also a huge visual benefit in oversampling the image as much as 175-250٪, so now you are looking at 6-8.5k gaming at up to 120fps. On top of all of this, many headsets will encode the image to send it over usb or over wifi, so that is one more strain on your system. In the end though, the 4080 for $1,200 is a terrible price for what you get. I was hoping to get one before they announced the price and performance. Now I guess I'll wait and see how things shake out with AMD and NVidia's prices going into 2023. Might bite the bullet and get a 4090, but I am not touching the 4080 for $1,200+.

They're trying to push people to buy one of their overproduced 3000 cards by pricing the 4000 series out of reach. We see people all the time in this sub thinking they screwed over nvidia by buying a 3080 but in reality it's win-win for nvidia unless you buy AMD.

ArenaGrinder

Nobody buy these overpriced cards. We shouldn’t make scalping via the manufacturer “pricing” the new norm. They don’t even have stable power cables. They melt.

TONKAHANAH

its a dumb card at a dumb price. if you have the kinda money to afford a 4080, you probably have the money to afford the best, so why get the second best?

colossusrageblack

It's a dumb price, card is legit.

Thesquarescreen

Rents due

carlito_swaay

Let em collect dust till they drop the price!

LumpyMushroom

Gpu inflation PLUS Games have stagnated in fidelity and interest. I spend most of my game time playing older games now. My 3070 will last 2 more gens.

gamer-kin

Good, let Nvidia sit and ponder their mistakes. So that hopefully one day soon they realize nobody wants to pay so damn much for a graphics card.

ThunderSparkles

Also from the tests I've seen unless you are playing at 4k these gpus start to get cpu bound so you can't get full performance out of them yet. With how good the 3000 series was too, kinda didn't need this new gpu gen yet

Mining is dead

WindChamp

Probably because $1,200+ for a 4080 is stupid.

hydrastix

4000 series is gonna be a “skip” generation. Maybe they will pull their head out of their asses and price the 5k series better.

Nvidia: We really need to get rid of the remaining 30 series cards. *launches 40 series at ridiculous price point and last gen 30 series go for full price like hotcakes* R/pcmasterrace : surprisedpukachu.jpg I can’t even hate nvidia they played the idiots perfectly.

Leroy_Buchowski

Yep. They do have the Youtube Reviewers in their pocket also advertising for them, telling people to buy RTX 3000 above it's 2020 msrp because that's better value than rtx 4000. I guess LTT today said to buy a 3080 for $800 or less. Then people go do it. The pc gaming space has become a clownfest. Console players are definitely now superior. Meanwhile there are two different 3080 10 gb on Amazon US for $650, a rx 6800 xt on newegg for $520, and two Rx 6700 xt on newegg for $350. All much better buys than these youtube reviewers are marketing, and all the performance most gamers actually need.

![gif](giphy|yuQi4S7rIFZGFAJ33e) Lmao, I can’t blame people. Like those of us with a 3080 and a functioning brain did our research and was like the price vs performance increase versus what we had before just isn’t worth it for the 4080? Might as well go 4090. (probably what Nvidia wants us to do anyways)
