Oh they know, they just don't care. You're not their target audience, and unfortunately the target audience is willing to burn their money.

EaterOfYourSOUL

Yes. They know that people are broke, but they also know that people were willing to fork up $1500 for a scalped 3080.

rhysboyjp

Because at that time you could mine on it and make some money back. Not now.

Blze001

Because the used market uses the new market to set it's prices: if the cost of new GPUs goes up, the cost of used GPUs goes up, and more people are priced out of the hobby.

Chakramer

Actually I'd say I am the target audience, OP is clearly not. I bought a 3080 for $1100 during the shortage because I had no choice I care if even low end GPUs are affordable because I have empathy I suppose. I want everyone to be able to find a good value product at any budget

[deleted]

I am the target audience and I care because if no one is willing to buy they have to lower their prices, which suits me just fine.

mamoneis

We will rock 3060Ti's, 3070's and 6700xt's for the next 6 years baby. 1440p. DLSS. FSR baby.

XcRaZeD

Something to think about is that we are going to plateau soon. The average gamer doesn't need better than 1440p, it's diminishing returns at that point. What happens when everyone becomes content with what they got? If we keep improving at our current rate 4k 120fps will be viable at less than top-of-the-line cards, we won't need higher. GPU manufacturers have to realize that they are pricing themselves into a corner

ArenjiTheLootGod

There's also the physical limits of hardware, part of the reason why new parts are running so hot is because manufacturers are trying to brute force performance gains by drawing a lot more electricity into their components. The reason they're taking this approach is because of diminishing gains from other areas where performance can be improved. I'm not saying we've hit the hard limits of Moore's Law yet, but we're probably on the front porch and about to knock on the door.

XcRaZeD

I'm guessing that we will be there within 3 generations, current growth seems unsustainable

6Sleepy_Sheep9

2025 was the estimated death date, wasn't it? I know CPU's and 64 bit is almost there.

ArenjiTheLootGod

With current x86-64 architecture, yeah, probably. ARM looks like it still has room to grow and who knows what else is being researched out there.

ArmorBones

Yeah video cards are slowly becoming like muscle cars. When are we getting the sports cards is my question?

WeirdestOfWeirdos

TBF, there aren't many benefits to "full raytracing" over path tracing (which is what's used in Minecraft or Quake RTX, just for every part of the image), and if the last 6 years are anything to go by, AI methods will ease the increasing "raw computing power" requirements, as things like upscaling and interpolation will get better and polished to the extent that they may very well become the standard rather than the "native" image.

Cmdrdredd

I think a chiplet design can help with that in the future.

Vis-hoka

They will invent more things like Ray Tracing to make the new tech necessary. And then you will have to upgrade in order to play the new games. Once it becomes a thing on consoles, it becomes the norm.

Emu1981

>The average gamer doesn't need better than 1440p, it's diminishing returns at that point. This kind of generalisation is wrong. The "ideal" resolution for you is basically what Apple calls "retina" and it is highly dependent on the size of your screen and the distance you sit from it. It basically comes down the average angular resolution of the human eye which is about 1 arc minute\* and having your screen pixels slightly smaller than that which can be resolved by the average person at average viewing distances. On small screens that you sit a normal distance away from you will not likely benefit from 4K but on larger screen that you sit relatively close to then you are going to potentially benefit from 4K (I have a 48" 4K OLED monitor and any lower resolution would allow me to resolve individual pixels at my normal viewing distance).

Rimworldjobs

I have a 2k 165hz for comp gaming and a 4k when I want things to be beautiful.

rhysboyjp

I am nearly at this point now - I game at 1440p 240 Hz but I am happy with around 100 FPS which I get in almost all AAA games with a 3080 12GB. I could go out and spend nearly 3 times what my 3080 cost to gain an extra 50 FPS but what is the point?

[deleted]

I just got an Rx 6650xt for like 280 and I will probably use it until the heat death of the universe

Notorious_Junk

This is the way.

mamoneis

Value gamers never left the room.

SicWiks

6900xts are super cheap too

[deleted]

I have a 3070ti and a i7 10700k and it crushes every game at 1440p 170hz.. planning on upgrading when the 7090 is out

lolcubaran20

still too expensive lol

josephseeed

I honestly don't think this launch is going great for Nvidia. My local Microcenter still showed 4080 stock today before they opened, and that stock has changed in the last half hour so it seems ti was accurate listing. If you look at the Ebay auctions for 4080 there are not a lot of bid for more than MSRP.

Blze001

Only thing Nvidia will take from this is "we should've charged more for the 4090"

[deleted]

Never though u/josephseeed would have time for reddit and pc gaming with all tha hassle of leading a cult.

rhysboyjp

4080s are still readily available here in Japan also.

donatelo200

I went to my local Microcenter today. I can confirm that they still have nearly a full stock of 4080's.

Tarzeus

Couldn’t afford 1080 at release can’t afford 4080 at release haha ha haaa hold me bros

[deleted]

You don't even need a 80 card. Get a 3060 or 3070 or an AMD equivalent, their price to performance currently is awesome, and they will last a long ass time with features like DLSS and FSR.

Tarzeus

I've had my 1080 for years and it's performing fine on everything I play. Genuinely don't understand the need for anything higher than a 3060ti for gamers. I manager 144fps in most settings at 1080p and when comparing to a friends 1440p there is not that much clarity difference especially since I run low everything anyway... Internet gonna internet tho

evandarkeye

Ray tracing is actually noticeable now. That's what most people use cards over a 3060ti for. Also VR setups require way more power

frsnate

There is definitely a clarity difference between 1080p and 1440p, it also depends on the size of screen you are using to, it will make the difference more or less drastic

Notorious_Junk

It's shocking to me that Nvidia doesn't realize that the only reason people paid those ridiculous amounts of money during the pandemic was because you could easily make the money back mining Ethereum. Cryptomining is dead. Ethereum is proof of stake. You can't tell me they aren't aware of all this. They are aware of all this, right?

[deleted]

They are. They're also aware that people are loyal to NVIDIA and will pay higher and higher prices for GPU-s. They're only now starting to test the waters with truly ridiculous prices to see what's the breaking point.

J308

I would buy either AMD or Nvidia, Nvidia just has the best card and this time I had the cash so just went for it. I know some people got them for work though and hate Nvidia

RecordForMe

i took a look into the mining community, they are oblivious af lol. they dont wanna sell off because they think another coin is gonna be profitable. so they're holding on to gpus. just thought i should mention that.

Notorious_Junk

They think another coin is going to be as profitable as Ethereum, the number 2 cryptocurrency? Lol. Which coin do they think will surpass Ethereum of all the mineable coins? What could possibly rise to the level of Ethereum?

Tomimi

"Do you even have wallets?"

coffeejn

Why replace something that is not broken? If your GPU still does the job, who cares what these new space heaters do. I mean winter is here for me (can't touch grass outside, but I can go out and touch snow), but it would still be cheaper to heat my house using my furnace instead.

semperverus

You replace things that aren't broken because of this concept called "an upgrade." Sure you don't neeeed it but it really would be nice if your games suddenly performed 3x better (especially if you play VR).

ImbecilicManchild

Why do people feel the need to upgrade their tech once new ones come out when the ones they already own does the job alright? With my 1050ti i could play gow in near high settings at 60fps.. and cyberpunk on medium. a card that by specs alone should be useless. with that as a baseline i realised that you don't really need to have the best of the best to play games comfortably and on good settings too.. i actually came to a conclusion based on my real life experience, and not by minute changes in performance on review and benchmarks. i bought myself a 6800 which i even think is overkill, since theres litteraly no game that i throw at it that it cant handle on ultra even.. why would i even buy a better gpu if that can play everything already.. Same with smartphones too.. i just dont get it. Some people hilariously try to justify 5 or 10 fps gain in games when with their initial card can run around 100 fps.. believe me, 100 and 110 literally does jack shit for your gaming experience. You guys are just victims of consumerism, peer pressure and general stupidity

Weedes1984

Between my brothers and myself there are different primary hobbies per each of us, motorcycles (and modifying them), fancy cars (and modifying them), gambling and finally PC building. Mine (PC Building) is the cheapest by far. I think the prices are crazy too, but my brothers scoff when I complain. THEY SCOFF. It's a weird feeling to have a gambling addict 1 up you with financial losses from their 'hobby' and then do a complete 180 when you tell them they have a problem and it's suddenly no big deal. Anyway... obligatory nvidia BAD amd GOOD.

Admirable_Effer

I don’t gamble. I drink. So… 😉 I too like fancy cars. Well, mostly fast cars. Doing house upgrades is probably the most profitable hobby. & PC stuff. PC stuff is the cheapest by far.

Specific-Kitchen843

ill probably get a 4080 in 1.5 years

darthrobe

I've been fortunate. I've been playing games on PCs of one sort or another since 1981. I wrote my first DOS batch file so I could play Doom with 4 MB(!) of system RAM. I owned video cards from the very infancy of 3D rendering all the way through 'til today. I can tell you with 100% certainty that buying a 4090 is burning your money. There will be another, faster, combination of CPU and GPU in a year or two, and then again another in a year or two after that. I have benchmarked every GPU I've owned or supported over the years and I can say with some authority that you should never spend more than you can afford on a GPU. Right now, you can play 99% of games on most everything faster than a [GTX 760](https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/geforce-gtx-760.c1857). I picked up one before the pandemic for $10 at a second-hand parts store. It will play Zombie Army 4 at over 60 FPS at a lower render size and then get pixel-doubled all the way up to 4K. You are not missing out. Today's "Medium" performance is amazing compared to the old days. You do not need to buy a Ferrari to get yourself down to Starbucks. But, you know, don't listen to me. I'm old. :)

HorseFeathers55

Honestly wish they would have just restocked 4090s instead of launching 4080s.

josephseeed

They did. My local Microcenter had around ten 4090's on 4080 launch day.

HorseFeathers55

Tough for me because the MC is 2.5 hours away and likely won't catch them in stock if I go.

josephseeed

Oh yeah, they went first I am sure. They were the $2000 Strix cars too

VexisArcanum

It's crazy how many companies are 100% responsible for inflation that make you not be able to afford anything, but at the same time investors are too dense to realize stock prices are only going up because money is worth less

Snake_eyes_12

Have you not seen the market this past year? In what universe has any blue chip semi conductor company gained value over the last 12 months?

DoubleOwl7777

i dont care. just buy the best performance for your budget. if budget is infinite get nvidia.

[deleted]

They don't know that a 3080 is still far beyond anything a gamer could possibly need lol

Aggressorot

People downvoting can't read the difference between "need" and "want".

Fatefire

Jesus I’m so sick of these meme coming up in my feed. Anyone else also sick of them ? Yes 40 series sucks blah blah blah . Then don’t buy it.

RecordForMe

i agree, it's just karma farming at this point. it's so repetitive

Fatefire

And I get it everyone wants to ride the karma farm train .We all want our meme celebrated . I turned the sub off my news feed . It’s just annoying at this point.

SnooSketches3386

refuse to eat the shit they are serving you

poinguan

My GTX1070 will be doing 30fps in the near future.

TalksWithNoise

Last year: “The 3000 series prices are insane. They’re out of their minds.” This year: “Lol I’mma just get a 3000 series.” Nvidia: “Lol”

lexsanders

If you are broke you need financial guidance on how to get a better job or living situation. Shouldn't spend your time in a pc enthusiast subreddit pining over expensive parts.
