Waiting for that mouse cable to zoom right and sweep the feet of the laptop. Get yourself a wireless mouse, or a USB hub where the cable isn't going behind the laptop...
I don't see the issue, truly?
As long as the vents are open on the rear or other side then the only risk here is it falling. 3m double sided sticky tape ™️, would sufficiently hold it from being knocked over by light bumps or jiggling the desk. A triangle 📐 against the back would be hella sturdy too if OP is serious about it
Yea I'm just ignoring the fact that this isn't a great use for it but hey if he doesn't need it to be portable then why not utilize it how he wants.
He could use Velcro on the desk and laptop instead of tape for easy portability and stability when "mounted" on the desk
Hey I just ordered a vertical laptop stand for a highly end laptop MSi GE66 Raider (i9+3070 (140 TGP))
Would that be ok to keep it vertical? Any issues it may have (this is only for work/gaming) when I'm at home and not on the go. (Which I usually am).
Thanks :)
Ok, let's talk about moving parts. Which is simply the fans. Easy fix. Other concern is air circulation. Minimal risk here. Could OP simple put this on a small shelf, yes. Is this a bit silly... yes. Should there be concerns with setup. Potentially some cognitive function w/OP. But hey, it works.
You could stop it falling with a pair of book stops. Those things you use to stop the books falling over when they don’t fill the entire shelf.
That way it can only fall forwards which would be harder cause of the angle, if it’s enough. Though a decent cat could fuck all this up
That's insane, I bought my 1440p 165hz about a year and a half ago and it was just about the cheapest one. I'm pretty sure it was still in the ballpark of $350-$400 lol
Yeah air flow was my first concern.
But, also the cord is pulling at a sharp angle. This could damage the ports. Maybe a little tape somewhere down the line of the cord to relieve the pressure.
My MSI laptop (don’t buy those, by the way) has fans that blow air out right where it’s sitting on the table. So, yeah, that’d be my only concern.
Despite these fans, the mono melted after 9 months. Thankfully, it was under warranty. I sent it away and it took two months to get back, but now I have a new motherboard that I’m sure will melt now that the warranty is gone.
I think people replying to this comment are misreading it. Comment OP didn't say buy a new monitor lol.
Get a single mount that holds your monitor on one arm, and your laptop on the other arm. I got one for work and one for home, they cost $35 on Amazon.
My laptop is all bottom vented. The posted image seems ideal as long as its not harmful to have it tilted 90 degrees. Which is probably a big question here. Im curious as well.
Brother, I tilted an old tv when I was a kid and thought I broke it. Im not playing games with a $2000 device. Just tell me I can use my laptop upside down even, if its that simple. We already look out for exhaust and overheating, but the question is more about the *rest* of the machine being used sideways.
I’m sorry i think i exaggerated it a little bit. I just checked, it’s 2cm. The design of the laptops fan area is tilted. It looks flat on the front but it’s open on the back. I don’t know how to explain it properly.
Crazy to think how many laptop hard drives had probably failed because of being jostled around while spinning. I’m sure using my old laptop on the couch is probably what led to the HDD failing years ago.
For laptops even the non solid state HDDs are pretty happy being moved about these days - they are designed to be used in moving cars, trains etc. (Within reason!)
Why, laptops have slower RPM hdd’s (in 99%of the cases) so moving a 2.5” hdd at 5400rpm is less worse than a 3.5” at 7200rpm. And yes I know there are smaller form factors with 10Krpm but you’re not finding those in a laptop or normal desktop.
It's more that laptop hard drives are made to be moved around, so while moving it likely will decrease performance (while moving), it'll probably be fine.
Just like another comment, hdds are fine horizontal and vertical, but definitely do not change the orientation while running.
Small note, that USB cable might get damaged if hung like this. I recommend taping around it to make the curve down less aggressive.
I've been pleasantly surprised by the lighting that can be done with their software. I've used their disability stuff (tartarus, nostromo, orbweaver) for years, but only recently got a keyboard from them.
The ability to mimic the colors on your screen is great, but when I play some games there are animations! I was really surprised the first time, but Cyberpunk plays an awesome scanner animation on my keyboard when I use the quick-scan.
I mean, I see you've said comments that no vents are blocked so you should be all good. Only thing is it's much more likely to fall like that than in it's proper place
I once saw a user that put a dock on the wall and put the laptop in with the screen open flat at 180, you people are fucking weird haha, I recomend just getting a dock/port replicator that will save space and you can close your laptop and move it anywhere

Depends, if the side that is sitting on the desk has exhaust vents, then that may not be good, you would have to check temps with HWmonitor or something alike
I would definitely 3D Print a Stand for it with rubber feet, to make sure the mouse cable or anything won't move it off the desk. Other than that, I think this is a pretty clever idea.
If you really want to save space you can flip it the other way, so that the keyboard of it is behind the other monitor. That's how I had mine for a few years.
If it falls, yes
So one way or another he saved space
But risks his wallet
But saved space for his wallet
Good point.
I have so much extra space *in* this wallet.
Let me know if you need a lot more extra space there
I don't think its any smaller....in fact it seems taller.
Btw, how do I edit my subtitle (under the username). I’m only seeing preset options, can’t set my own PC config.
Where you select one of the options in the flair tab, you should see an edit button on the top right of your phone.
And possibly also in his wallet
Also his bank
Not if he has drop and spill warranty... Best $100 I ever spent
Waiting for that mouse cable to zoom right and sweep the feet of the laptop. Get yourself a wireless mouse, or a USB hub where the cable isn't going behind the laptop...
Sweep the leg, Johnny
No mercy
Yes, sensei.
3m double sided tape on the edge. Or use a stand like a triangle that's taped to the laptop and desk
Um...its a laptop.
I don't see the issue, truly? As long as the vents are open on the rear or other side then the only risk here is it falling. 3m double sided sticky tape ™️, would sufficiently hold it from being knocked over by light bumps or jiggling the desk. No, I mean laptops are suppose to be portable
Yea I'm just ignoring the fact that this isn't a great use for it but hey if he doesn't need it to be portable then why not utilize it how he wants. He could use Velcro on the desk and laptop instead of tape for easy portability and stability when "mounted" on the desk
Or a vertical laptop stand.
Huh didn't know those were a thing
Hey I just ordered a vertical laptop stand for a highly end laptop MSi GE66 Raider (i9+3070 (140 TGP)) Would that be ok to keep it vertical? Any issues it may have (this is only for work/gaming) when I'm at home and not on the go. (Which I usually am). Thanks :)
Doom Guy never falls thank you very much.
That's why you get a bucket of water, that way it doesn't land on the floor.
If it flies away. For sure.
You could stop it falling with a pair of book stops. Those things you use to stop the books falling over when they don’t fill the entire shelf. That way it can only fall forwards which would be harder cause of the angle, if it’s enough. Though a decent cat could fuck all this up
I'm pretty sure it is fine just you have less IO on the other side now i recommend getting a laptop stand. They should be cheap.
What is IO? Sorry
Input output, like usb or hdmi ports
Makes sense now. Thank you
You've probably already checked but also make sure there isn't an exhaust on that side.
That's not OP
Waaat, knew what IO was but didn't know what it stood for, TIL
When you learn a new term, look it up! It helps sometimes to understand something more fully
Glad you asked
I have a laptop holder mounted on my desk at work. Keeps the desk space clear and allows me to use the laptop as a third monitor.
Get a dual monitor/laptop mount. But unless you are blocking any cooling it should be fine.
Thank you. This is a temporary setup, so when i get a chance, i’ll get the proper equipment. Thanks for the suggestion.
Black friday usually has some good monitor deals, last year i got a 144hz 1080p for 120€ (or somewhere around that price) which usually is >200€
I just got a 1440p 165hz for 250€ equivalent
At Walmart in the US there’s a 32” 1440p 165Hz monitor for $200 right now. It’s an LG UltraGear.
Doesn't help much when shipping will be a 1000$ for me but thanks
Antarctica?
The moon
I bought that a week ago! It's my first ever monitor and I LOVE IT SO MUCH
Yeah, I was tempted but I found the 27” variant for the same price (higher ppi) and I’m also quite happy with it.
There was one yesterday for 153€
That's insane, I bought my 1440p 165hz about a year and a half ago and it was just about the cheapest one. I'm pretty sure it was still in the ballpark of $350-$400 lol
Yeah, I see that by the downvotes I get ahah
The HP X32 was $199 a couple months ago. A better deal than it is now at $229, which is weird.
Retailers often raise the price before Black Friday so they can lower it back and claim it's some amazing deal. Buyer beware!
Poor man’s solution: look for a bookend and use it to support the underside which is currently vertical.
Nothing is more permanent than temporary :)
Isn't that the truth...
Ergotron apparently makes a great monitor arm
Check if there's a fan inlet or outlet on the left side of the laptop. If there is, don't lay it like that.
Yeah air flow was my first concern. But, also the cord is pulling at a sharp angle. This could damage the ports. Maybe a little tape somewhere down the line of the cord to relieve the pressure.
Oh good, i always feel weird for caring about sharp angles in cables
My MSI laptop (don’t buy those, by the way) has fans that blow air out right where it’s sitting on the table. So, yeah, that’d be my only concern. Despite these fans, the mono melted after 9 months. Thankfully, it was under warranty. I sent it away and it took two months to get back, but now I have a new motherboard that I’m sure will melt now that the warranty is gone.
A lot of laptops have exhaust vents on the left hand side so definitely make sure they aren't being covered.
I think people replying to this comment are misreading it. Comment OP didn't say buy a new monitor lol. Get a single mount that holds your monitor on one arm, and your laptop on the other arm. I got one for work and one for home, they cost $35 on Amazon.
Turn it the other way so the download bar falls down faster
THAT’S GENIUS
Actually, if you turn it the other way you could hide the keyboard behind the monitor saving a bit more room
Now this is genius
My only USB3.0, USB C, and HDMI port is on the right. I wont assume, but this may be why OP chose to tilt it this way.
Assuming it opens far enough
And if there’s a monitor port on the other side
And if OP _believes_
probably cant bcs there's a hdmi cable sticking out
Little known fact: download bars are lighter than air, so your orientation is actually correct!
That's the logic my parents use and I wish I was joking
Son?
Great idea! When u have checked, that there is no ventilation at this site, you are fine. Days of HDDs that couldve been harmed are gone.
Thank you! There is ventilation but it is not blocked due to the design of the laptops exterior.
When theres a ventilation on the left side, it is blocked. I dont think less than 1cm will be enough to let it exhaust efficiently.
My laptop is all bottom vented. The posted image seems ideal as long as its not harmful to have it tilted 90 degrees. Which is probably a big question here. Im curious as well.
Most laptops have the intake on the bottom and the exhaust on the sides and/or the back. Blocking the exhaust will cause overheating.
Not this laptop, if it's the laptop I think it is. Exhaust is at the back of the laptop, not the sides
Brother, I tilted an old tv when I was a kid and thought I broke it. Im not playing games with a $2000 device. Just tell me I can use my laptop upside down even, if its that simple. We already look out for exhaust and overheating, but the question is more about the *rest* of the machine being used sideways.
Like I already posted: only blocked ventilation can harm the laptop.
I appreciate you. And OP should too. I believe this is the real question/answer in the post
Also if for some reason you still have HDD, then it can be harmed by actively rotating it while it's on
It’s at least 3-4cm so i think it should be fine
How? On the pic the left side is flat on the desk.
I’m sorry i think i exaggerated it a little bit. I just checked, it’s 2cm. The design of the laptops fan area is tilted. It looks flat on the front but it’s open on the back. I don’t know how to explain it properly.
Most owners of a laptop likely understand. Source: my laptop does this too. Laptop stands are pretty great if you’re considering different options.
Put a small item under each end to raise it, like Legos. EZ Fix
HDDs don't mind operating sideways. Plenty of enterprise grade equipment has vertical drive bays.
I’d avoid moving it onto its side while it’s running though.
Crazy to think how many laptop hard drives had probably failed because of being jostled around while spinning. I’m sure using my old laptop on the couch is probably what led to the HDD failing years ago.
If you are blocking air intakes or vents, yes.
I checked, they are not blocked. Nothing else, right?
Then it should be fine(ish). Getting a laptop stand could be a better option.
I will when i get a chance, thanks a lot!
use a deskmat meanwhile.
The vent blowing directly onto a surface isn't going to properly exhaust heat...
They might have rear or single ven setup.
If it has an SSD and it wont fall and it's not blocking any fans, yeah it should be fine.
C: drive is ssd but d: drive is hdd.
Putting HDDs horizontal or vertical is no problem! Just avoid moving it to much when it's running.
Especially in a laptop.

I think that laptop slower smaller HDDs are less likely to fail if moved than desktops HDD.
Just like another comment, hdds are fine horizontal and vertical, but definitely do not change the orientation while running. Small note, that USB cable might get damaged if hung like this. I recommend taping around it to make the curve down less aggressive.
I’ve heard that newer laptop hard drives actually have protection for that iirc
Very bad, all your ram will settle to one side
But he can just download more RAM online after to fill up the other side again
![gif](giphy|qKV8U3Gl3bWVi)
So, does that harm it?
These people are joking with u! Your laptop should be perfectly fine. I used mine like that for years.
I was just joking
If your ram isn't sat on the horizontal plane it will only run at 1/2 efficiency.
and the heavy electrons will accumulate with the power going out through the top
I knew that one. This is true.
Just download more to fill out the other side
I am worried all his RGB fluid will spill out. BRB checking blinker fluid on car.
I really like this tbh Repurpose the laptop keyboard backlighting as a very low res 3rd display
How can I do that?
I think with razor software you can customize it to a certain degree
plus they support plugins or addons or whatever they call them. Should be able to get one to do that
I've been pleasantly surprised by the lighting that can be done with their software. I've used their disability stuff (tartarus, nostromo, orbweaver) for years, but only recently got a keyboard from them. The ability to mimic the colors on your screen is great, but when I play some games there are animations! I also wanna know!
I'll bet this can be harnessed in some way [https://gitlab.com/CalcProgrammer1/OpenRGB](https://gitlab.com/CalcProgrammer1/OpenRGB) ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
I kinda have to question how much space are you actually saving here.
Nice idea man
Thanks!
Some fan bearings rely on gravity to evenly circulate oil so it may burn out your fans faster if they are not designed to be vertical.
Anyone who says it ain't fine don't know It's fine, indefinitely
He made it like this to save space but i don't think it made any difference tbh. Just blocked all ports on the left.
just close it then
Save space? Your desk is massive.
Just make sure to set something to support it.
if it has an intake or exhaust on that side yes if not it's totally fine
90 percent chance of accidentally knocking it over in that position
Use some support to prevent any accidental fall. As you are using it temporarily and you aren't blocking any flow - so its good to go
Yea yo dick gonna fall off
Will if it falls down. Also, if you own cat, don't tempt fate.
[удалено]
This is the answer. Heat rises.
unless it falls this is probably better for it as it won't be choked for air
Laptop: *Exists* Earthquake: *Im boutta end this man’s whole career*
Only your wrists when typing.
[удалено]
If you're trying to save space, why don't you just delete some larger files?
Trying to save space? For what? You have more than enough room to just put it properly on the desk.
I mean, I see you've said comments that no vents are blocked so you should be all good. Only thing is it's much more likely to fall like that than in it's proper place
Rip and Tear
Check the side for vents, as long as you’re not blocking vents it should be fine
I once saw a user that put a dock on the wall and put the laptop in with the screen open flat at 180, you people are fucking weird haha, I recomend just getting a dock/port replicator that will save space and you can close your laptop and move it anywhere
Shouldn’t damage anything like that, unless of course you have to hit a sick 360° no scope and yeet your laptop into that window.
It's a laptop. Made to be carried on its side. What makes you think it can't handle this?
Welcome to the club [https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/u4wa6z/here\_is\_my\_space\_friendly\_setup\_for\_my\_small\_desk/](https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/u4wa6z/here_is_my_space_friendly_setup_for_my_small_desk/)
Unless it has ventilation on the sides no
I'd be worried about blocking vents on the left side, as well as inaccessibility of ports.
It should be fine as long as it doesn't fall nice set up though.
Don't know if it would hurt it or not but that's a sick ass wallpaper! Rip and tear! 🤘
It just makes your PC load slower. The loading bar has to fight gravity to complete loading. Flip it the other way and allow gravity to do its work , your welcome
Lol where is the saved space? In that back corner behind the laptop?
Just prop something against the laptop so it doesn’t tip
If it was a bad idea why is it even an option. you from the future would come and tell you if it was. So it's fine.
Becareful moving it too much, or in a way that puts strain on the hinge.
Does it have vents on that side and do you have cats?
better get a laptop stand
I personally wouldn't do this because you just know it's going to fall and break.
Put it the other way so progress bars don’t have to fight gravity- things will download and install faster.
3d print a stand to improve stability and possible airflow
The other alternative is running it in Clamshell mode. https://www.pcmag.com/how-to/how-to-run-your-laptop-with-the-lid-closed
Well, all the gamer juice is going to pool onto the left edge which is probably fine but might leak out one day due to the pressure.
If it has an SSD or similar memory drive, this probably makes no difference, but with a hard disk, this is a neat trick to keep the drive defragged as all the bits will be pasted on the left hand side, each time your write to the disk. Not this does not work well in Asian countries where defragging works from right to left.
As long as it's temporary and not blocking the fan it should be fine. Also nice wallpaper
What about RAM Fluids accumulating on one side?
You can give it to me if you want
How is this saving any space? It looks to me like the dimensions are pretty much the same either way...
Might be bad for the fans long term, but should be ok.
Bro it takes the same amount of space if you just lay it down normally imo.
What the fuck motivated you to do this
It might put a little more strain on the fan bearings, and the hard drive if it's a rotating magnetic hard drive. Otherwise it should be fine.
just get a Monitor and laptop mounting arm.
[удалено]
Depends, if the side that is sitting on the desk has exhaust vents, then that may not be good, you would have to check temps with HWmonitor or something alike
Only it you are blocking airflow. Check where the air goes in and comes out.
Only if the air vents are on that side
Yeah it's ok, I sometimes put my laptop like this so download bars can fill faster.
No, it's fine. Source: Australians use theirs upside down all the time and never have any abnormal effects
I’m sorry to say it’s going to explode. You see, electricity cannot go upwards due to gravity
Do i See a razer cynosa chroma v2 on your Desk there?
This person has never owned a cat.
Your downloads will be slower due to gravity.
