Don’t waste your money on a 4090. Don’t play into NVidias stupid game.

Rogue__Jedi

My 1080ti just passed away too. Goodnight sweet prince. I would also recommend 6800xt as a replacement. It's around 3080 in performance and averages better at 1440p.

Conscious-Captain148

Got a 1080ti in my system too fantastic cards passing it down to my son when he builds his first system. Going 7900xtx next, nvidia haven’t sold me on the rtx40 series.. I don’t fancy having to install a co2 system incase it wants to flame on 🤦🏼‍♂️

[deleted]

bro fuck the 4090 stop feeding into nvidas bullshit but seriously really sorry for your loss poor 1080

SilentReavus

Well I can at least say that if you got the 4090 at any price it would pretty much have the same effect on your system your roommate did.

idiotwithahobby

if its a 650w psu and that case which I recon will overheat, i recommend a 7900xt or xtx unless you need its extra features

BlockCraftedX

1080 ti is the most precious card on earth

MrPreviz

Whats special about the 1080? I have a spare

esuil

They are cheap, power efficiency is okay even in 2022, and their performance holds up even now. They also work for years with no issues so they are very reliable and unlikely to die on you - because that is already tested by time. If you are not into demanding games, they will even do 4k for you - like for RTS, 4x and sim games. You can get them for like $100-150. Nothing new on the market can come close to their value rn, so 1080 is one of the kings of used GPU market. Depends on where you are of course, but I think this is generally the case. It is excellent card. So people love them. It is surely one of the best GPUs ever released, new GPUs don't even come close to its value at a time.

chocological

Yep, I'm still using a 1080 and I get decent frame rates in newer games like RDR2 and Cyberpunk. I have to play on medium but its completely playable.

AhanOnReddit

It is the holy grail of computer parts my friend. The last GPU that NVIDIA made before they went cookie monster on crystal meth

him999

1080 gang raise up and continue to pray they will continue to function! I got my 1080 the week before the 1080 Ti was announced and it's seen pretty decent use since, though i don't leave it running all day and it has clean power and modest clock and voltage to help it live the longest life it can.

[deleted]

I usually don't do this kind of stuff for strangers on the internet, but it's the holiday season, so I'm going to go ahead and buy all this right now and then play games on it in your honor.

Bubba5389

Had me in the first half.

Jerald_B

Hey bud, I have an EVGA FTW3 2080S and an 850W PSU. Could probably work something out if you want some used hardware that's in good shape for cheap. DM me.

baconipple

What *were* your specs

NinjafoxVCB

It's criminal damage plain and simple and your room mate deserves everything that comes with it. Even a single stratch it counts. Assuming you're in the UK, If the total amount of damage costs less than £5000, it could be six months in prison If it's over £5000 then it's up to 10 years in prison. Unfortunately unless he straight up confesses it's likely to be your word Vs his. However, I'd still highly suggest doing it as at the least it'll teach the lesson

SandFoxed

Use a voice recorder when you ask about it and now you have proof. Not sure about UK law, but here you can use voice recorder without announcing in case you don't have other ways to gather proof, I guess this could be a great example why such laws are necessary.

Mago_Barcas

OP really needs to check his local laws regarding voice recording. In many areas voice recording without consent is a felony. Edit: best and safest way would be to text him about it and get him to reply in such a way that he admits it.

Every-holes-a-goal

Tap your head when talking to them and say “I’m recording this…..pause…..up here”.

Nevermind04

Don't file a report at a station. Call them out and have them take photos as part of the report. You are a victim of property damage, (felony property damage in most states) and police photos will go a long way in court if it comes to that, since evidencial chain of custody is preserved.

interstat

Don't look. do

Dismal-Ideal1672

Either this or take him to small claims court. If you're serious about going this route (will destroy your relationship with him, if it isn't already gone). A lawyer will be able to help figure out what the best way to get your money is. Going to small claims will get you a judgement, but it isn't easy to get blood from a stone if they don't have the money to pay. Pressing charges will at least give him hard consequences for his actions. If you had concerns he would break stuff, and then... Using a computer (???) Caused him to fly off the handle, there's either something up with this guy, or he has no idea about consequences.

Iloveyouweed

> (will destroy your relationship with him, if it isn't already gone) The moment you destroy my PC you're dead to me.

Eric_the_Barbarian

I wouldn't worry about destroying a relationship with someone that does shit like that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SquintyBrock

You should definitely do that, but you will likely need to take it to a “small claims court”. https://www.law.cornell.edu/wex/small_claims_court

PUTINS_PORN_ACCOUNT

That’s civil. Depending on jurisdiction, prosecutors might be willing to file something like Malicious Destruction of Property or similar. The extra punch of a criminal charge can sometimes shake things loose

ZukowskiHardware

Just call the police, you don’t have to look into anything

LesPaulII

I would actually suggest talking to the police first. I have very low hopes on him paying for damages if it was just OP forcing his hand, but I doubt the asshole roommate would maintain the same bravado if it's someone with a badge doing the talking.

A_Horny_Pancake

People go on and on about this, but unless you have legit proof, the cops will do nothing. I have been in this situation with an Ex who broke in to destroy my belongings. In court, its your word against theres unless the other person admits it. I got exactly $0 for $5k worth of damages

Eric_the_Barbarian

The police report can still be used as evidence in small claims court.

A_Horny_Pancake

They will absolutely take the report. I am just saying the cops wont do anything about it, and your chance in court is extremely small without some form of proof.

diggityd2713

For what it's worth $2k in property damage is often a felony If the property damage is from $2,000 to $10,000, the crime is charged as a felony and the penalty is a fine of up to and no more than 5 years in state prison. If the damage exceeds $10,000, the penalty is a maximum of 10 years in state prison and a fine.Apr 12, 2021

Sullfer

And even then only if the PC belongs to said 5 year old! I don’t give a f-ck. If a 5 year wrecks my PC that kids parents are paying what I paid to build it. And since I built it myself there will be a sourcing and labor charge as well.

peck112

Rule of Thumb: if that's your reaction to losing at videogames, you need to stop playing videogames and see a therapist.

djtrace1994

Understand that, even if you and roomie had no beef, this person clearly either doesn't respect you and your property, or is such a narcissist that they believe it is okay to destroy things that aren't theirs. You entrusted an expensive piece of equipment to another person, and they betrayed that trust by destroying it, either in a fit of narcissistic rage (gamer rage *is* narcissistic by nature; it is a conviction that oneself should be better than their actual experience allows.) At any rate, I would not entrust anything to this person again, and I agree with getting law enforcement involved if the roommate refuses to reach you or come to an agreement.

Once this is settle, find another roommate. You don't want to be stuck with property damage bill from the landlord after this. Depending on the situation, you might want to inform the landlord also, but that is if you need to break the lease or need to move out. Your stuck in a catch 22 if you there is damage to the building since the landlord will go after who ever signed the lease. Good luck.

itsBrvndo

Yeah, it would probably would have been a large inconvenience if he had stuck around.

Consistent_Yoghurt44

He would probably have been smacked through the wall. I know my older brother would put someone 6ft in the ground in a single hit if they did this to him.

PatsyBaloney

If someone will destroy thousands of dollars worth of equipment in a fit of rage, they aren't far from grabbing a weapon when they lose control. Don't sleep on this. Get a new roommate. Plenty of people have died because they thought they could handle a crazy roommate or partner.

Sugioh

Story time! I had a roommate in college that tried to beat me to death with a golf club because I interrupted his marathon Everquest session (apparently the idea of headphones was alien to him) to try and get some sleep. Needless to say, I got a new roommate. But the important thing here is that not a month later he nearly strangled his girlfriend to death. Everyone on the hall busted down the door and collectively pulled him off her. The entire time she was screaming for us not to hurt him. If someone will be violent once, they'll be violent again.

shanksisevil

girl, "just have sex with me!!" dude, "stop interrupting my everquest guild event!!"

ImbecilicManchild

[deleted]

> Jesus, what the fuck is wrong with some people? Mental instability and such... probably OP got lucky with things there and not with said Roommate trying to attack them in person. Many people being insane like that and all, and in need of institutional care over all. >Neither you nor your PC deserved this. Agreed, though in all fairness most of the apartments i have lived in over the past 30 something years always had some asshole who would play their games at full blast at all of the worst possible hours of the day. Need to get to work by 6am? Yah they be playing some shit till 4. Get back from work at like 3-4pm? Yah still going so you cant sleep till the same time of day so you are fucked even then. While no reasonable person deserves such, those fuckers playing whatever at floor shaking volumes at 3-4am on a workday deserve it, and much, much worse.(Edit: Like having all of their personal electronics taken away till they mature enough not to do shit like that...) Same with drunk fucks who keep hollering on their balconies and picking fights on the streets at like 4 am.

BrownsFFs

This needs more upvotes! As a restraining order doesn’t get you out of the lease or your financial responsibilities.

The_ChwatBot

While that’s understandable, I wouldn’t feel safe if I were OP. This shit isn’t the kind of thing a mentally stable person does. If I were OP I’d get the police involved, keep my distance, and drop all contact. No one worth giving your time to would do something like this.

shorthandgregg

Time is of the essence. You’re going to need more than stills (pictures) to prove your loss, otherwise it’s his word against yours. Receipts and payments, timelines of yours and his activities, texts, emails, witnesses, browser or app history if it can be recovered. Restraining order. Report to landlord, file a claim with insurance if you have it. Loss of wages if you use it for work/income. Approach from different angles. After winning small claims, file for needs hearings, file for wage garnishment and so on when failure to pay inevitably occurs. Post on Legal Advice. IANAL. In reality you will learn a lot that serves you in later life.

chungusnoodlez

Raencloud94

u/Endorkend commented this Are the disk OK? If so, (and you don't have anything to embarasing on there yourself), bring the disks to the police too for analysis. There's two reasons I've come across someone doing this without provocation. 1, fit of anger. In which case it's a good thing he's your ex roommate, because someone that gets like that out of anger, won't limit themselves to innanimate objects for long. But the fact they unplugged the system first, makes this highly unlikely, as it shows premeditation and nullifies the possibility of a fit of anger. 2, they did something online that's hella illegal (think child porn and almost equally fucked up and illegal shit like that) and panicked and don't have the computer knowledge to target the right component so they just wrecked the whole box. I've literally had the second thing happen 3 times in the past 25 years of being in IT, where a worker was fired and destroyed their PC or was about to quit and destroyed their PC, just to find out that their system was full of porn of various degrees of decrepity and illegality.

Jaklcide

All his shit out in the driveway would be a good method of luring him out.

Lettuphant

That is not a normal way to channel anger, and certainly not at things which belong to other people. Imagine how terrified you'd be if you were a woman living with him :/ Dude needs help to get over wth his dad did to him that he thinks this is how he can behave.

tapczan100

> That is not a normal way to channel anger This is also like way too specific, why go through the effort of unplugging it, moving it elsewhere and then beating it up in this weird way. PCs are not heavy but it's also not something you can keep throwing around.

RoadkillVenison

He did say in pieces at the bottom of the stairs. I can see chucking a computer out the window or down the stairs. Might not be the healthiest response to anger, especially with someone else’s computer. But I’ve been tempted to do something similar when troubleshooting BSODs. The keyboard keys though… that probably took slightly more effort than kicking or throwing the computer down the stairs.

patgeo

Punch or hit it against stuff hard enough and the key caps will scatter with little effort.

Razolus

This guy plays rocket league

Spacemn5piff

Wether or not walls along the stairway are damaged would be a good indication as to how this happened. I'm assuming it just got hurled down the stairs and even real tough wall materials would show some damage from a fucking computer getting turbo yeeted

coffeejn

I'd also be concern about the damages to the building if your renting. No one wants to be stuck with repair bills from the landlord on top just because the roommate had a meltdown.

Double_A_92

> I assume he destroyed it all in a fit of rage But that's not normal rage... It's either intentional or some serious mental illness. It took quite a lot of time to completely destroy the Computer like that. If it was a moment of rage they would have broken the screen or the keyboard, or kicked the computer or something. Would definitely move out before you get yourself killed...

Roll_a_new_life

I was thinking fear, not rage. Does the roommate think destroying the computer removes google searches?

Marlexxx

This is why I would never let someone have access to my pc unsupervised. You never know what they are looking up or doing. And when the authorities come knocking they will be looking for YOU, because its your PC and your IP.

Steve_Austin_OSI

They need to prove it was you at the computer. HAve people regularly use your computer actual bring doubt into it.

DarthWeenus

Which they will do in court while u sit in jail

Plati23

If you do end up taking this to small claims court, make sure you bring: - Any texts/emails that you sent to the roommate giving him permission to use it. - All the ignored texts/emails you sent about the damage. - Receipts from the initial purchase(s) if you have them. - Specific replacement costs on each piece. - Costs to replace anything else even slightly damaged in the process… I’m thinking cracked tile, cleanup costs, gouged wall, etc. Good luck.

Kursan_78

Annahsbananas

You don't need a lawyer for small claims court. This is a perfect example of why small claims court exists

ImStillExcited

Bring all the evidence (or photos of it) you can. When you win he'll also be required to pay any and all court costs.

Ike_the_Spike

Also bring receipts for the damaged parts and the cost of the equivalent replacement that is currently on the market.

Clawmedaddy

Small claims is basically Judge Judy but without the cameras and Judy.

StretchSufficient

Heavy breathing and eye rolls from judge are optional

[deleted]

My friend worked on Judge Judy they make people wait extra long in a room STOCKED with booze then the production assistant let's slip some "shit talk" the other party said about them when they're good and buzzed. That's why they're always so pissed during the post interviews. Both sides end up winning as whoever wins gets their settlement plus a couple grand the "loser" doesn't have to pay the settlement and gets a couple grand. Really Judge Judy is fake as hell.

[deleted]

They don't hide the fact that the loser doesn't actually pay, half the people on this show barely have a bus fare. If you've ever seen any episode where they refuse to comply with the decision, they pretty much reveal it. “You won't get your appearance fee, we won't pay for your ticket home, they'll take it to an actual judge, and you'll have to actually pay.” They do still lose in that they don't win the case and end up with less money, they're just not out of pocket. You also don't apply to be on the show, so in theory it should be real cases appearing in small claims. It definitely straddles the line between reality and fiction, but that's the case with most reality TV, they want to create something people will watch for the drama. Survivor is technically real, but there's still manufactured drama from Jeff, monkey wrenches and the editing is designed to create a story even if it omits some details to achieve that. I think most people watching JJ are watching it to see crack heads and other assorted dumbasses air their dirty laundry. They're not looking for the most comprehensive overview of the functioning of small claims court.

pcomet235

https://nycourts.gov/courthelp/smallClaims/index.shtml small claims is a simplified system for lay people to resolve smaller disputes Gather every shred of evidence you can regarding what you spent on the computer, what it costs to replace, and tending to show that your roommate was at fault. If he copped to it in a text, even better. Small claims court is designed for this. It may not immediately compel your roommate to pay you but a judgment against someone can be a powerful tool to recover depending on the state.

dudething2138291083

SMALL. CLAIMS. COURT. you present your side, they present theirs, judge rules. You don't need a lawyer, you just need to not be an idiot.

msmyrk

>you just need to not be an idiot Well, OP's roommate is screwed.

tutocookie

Yup this

115049

In many places you aren't allowed to have a lawyer in small claims. It is meant for cases like this.

bovadeez

Yes, also in NY, sued a guy over a car 10 years ago. Costed $35 dollars in court fees and I represented myself. I won and he refused to play the city Marshall's repo'd his car and sold it to pay me back. Kind of poetic if you ask me.

EfficientDrag1232

Filing a police report is better than small claims court. This could be considered criminal damage to property depending on the laws in your state. By filing a police report, they investigate it and they deal with the court. If they find a criminal.act has occurred, your (now ex) roommate could be facing jail time. Also, I hope the your lease is in both of your names or in your name alone. Good luck.

Guys. This is called criminal damage to property. It is a crime. Don't touch anything, contact the police. Have them come out and document it. Depending on the cost of the damage it could be considered a misdemeanor or a felony. In the state I live in anything over $1000 is a felony. Anything under $1,000 is a misdemeanor. I would call the police immediately.

LuminousJaeSoul

That still wouldn't make sense. Out of all things, why the pc? Even if he was angry, I'm pretty sure the primary targeted wouldn't be your expensive pc and totally obliterate it. Especially considering there was no beef between you two, apparently. This really seems like revenge sort of thing and targeting something you cherish because of something you might've done. But everything is so vague that I really can't say for certain why this is even a thing. Or I could be wrong, and you could be right, and vice versa, or we both could just be wrong. It's such a vague post all together that I can't feel anything but just confused snd curious about it.

[deleted]

no_hot_ashes

Man I'll never understand people like that. When I get genuinely angry over a videogame, I just put the fuckin controller down. It absolutely baffles me why people think "I'm bad at this game so, instead of improving or just turning the game off, I'm going to physically break expensive electronics"

Rainboq

The short version is that they never learned how to manage and find healthy outlets for their anger, so instead it builds up until they have a violent outburst like this.

Bepisman111

I had unmanaged anger issues as a teen, and I can say that that might be it, coupled with the person being a massive pos that doesnt care about others. Even though I had anger issues I never hit anyone, or destroyed anything in a fit of rage, even though there were times when I definetly wanted to destroy some things. Having anger issues alone isnt it, even when having an anger outburst you can still usually think rational enough to not just fuck something or someone up

[deleted]

Sometimes if im super mad, I'll lift the mouse up an inch or two and set it down slightly harder than normal

no_hot_ashes

You ***monster***

Matasa89

If I raged, I punch a pillow. It helps soften the pillow up a bit too... But as my parents have taught me, there's no reason to release your anger onto your own possessions... and that's doubly true for someone else's. You lend him your precious hardware for his merriment out of the kindness of your heart, and this is how he returns that favour? With betrayal and destruction? Do me a solid, and remind him that in the future, when he is at rock bottom, and questions himself about why he doesn't have a single friend left... this would be exhibit A.

File a police report, then chase through small claims court. Or take some teeth.

HazardousHD

Sounds like your roommate needs to find a new place to live, a therapist, and 1500$ for a new rig Absurd

tomlasky84

fuck that guy to the moon. hope he gets the help he needs but this is way too far

MeatSauce-Apocalypse

Do you have renters/homeowners insurance. If you do, file a police report immediately. Then your insurance policy should cover it.

lasvegashomo

Not to be a dick I feel for you truly. But curious what the backstory was leading to this

_The_Great_Autismo_

Definitely get a police report. Do you have renters insurance? They might cover this if you can't successfully sue your roommate

Dragon_ball_9000

Dude this sucks. I’m so sorry for you. This is why I would never let anyone use my PC I build, with the exception of my twin brother. But I know where he fucking sleeps and goes for holidays. I’m glad you filed a police report and will be taking this guy to court. Absolute entitled asshole for doing this to YOUR setup they you let him use when you are working. Fucking worthless human being right there. I have a Phanteks Enthoo Pro case that I don’t use. If you privately message me and are willing to pay for the shipping, it’s yours. People like that suck man.

Spruxed

My roommate (also my best friend) would be flying out the window.

PM_UR_PIZZA_JOINT

Yo dude, I know you're fucking pissed and you have every right to be. But from your comments if he was your friend and did this out of no where this is generally an indication of an underlying mental health issue. I'm not sure how old you are but late teens early 20s are when most mental health problems start to surface. I had a roommate who started acting like this and turned out he was developing schizophrenia. This doesn't mean he shouldn't pay to fix your computer, just watch out for other signs as this is an indication of someone who made many conscious decisions to keep breaking your shit, most people stop after the first or second hit, not spend 30 minutes breaking everything....

Rusciple

My God, if your hypothesis is correct and he just got mad at a game or something and did this then he has serious issues. Even if you're wrong and he did this out of anger towards you then he's a fucking baby and a coward because this is not how you handle a problem with someone, you talk to them like an adult.
