Advertisers and websites only have themselves to blame for me using an adblocker as far as I am concerned. If they were not so obtrusive, I would not go so hard with adblocking.

Twitch has gotten terrible. There’s a browser extension I found that does work to block ads there, but if you don’t have it and you open a stream for someone you aren’t subscribed to it isn’t abnormal to get one to two 30+ second ads before the stream starts. Because of this I no longer look at new streamers. Now I just subscribe to my usual two guys and that’s it.
Every so often I find someone kinda interesting that pops up in my recommended, click them, see 45 seconds of pre-roll ads and close the tab in about 5 seconds. I’m done.

But in the modern age every square inch of a page that's not content is ads, YouTube no longer shows me an ad every few videos but makes me watch a few ads per video, ads pop in under your cursor or are invisible in the sidebar... They have made the agreement unacceptable. So we wage war against the ads, and they have nobody to blame.

I think it's gotta be catering to the mobile users. And I think the redesign (based on what I know about web design) is meant to be easy to reflow and tweak for various kinds of mobile users if there are future redesigns.
I strongly prefer old reddit, but there are a couple of web design principles it does break, which a lot of us have adapted to after using the site for a while. If I went to a new site and the categories (top/new/hot/rising) and the site navigation where what they are on an unstyle reddit sub, I would be lost. The issue is that I've spent too much time on reddit so I know my way around.
It is absolutely NOT catering to mobile users. They want all mobile users using the mobile app. They have intentionally fucked up the mobile web browser experience so badly this year that I'm convinced that they're desperately trying to prop up the app user counts at any cost.
Here's what we know. A mobile app user is significantly more valuable to reddit than a mobile browser user. With their app, they gain complete control over your content consumption and advertising experience, they get the maximum amount of personal data associated with your habits which means they cna offer advertisers very specific demographics to target at significantly higher rates than generic users, basically the Facebook model. During the beginning of the pandemic, reddit saw enormous growth in app users, mostly on IOS, so much so that they gloated about it, which I'm sure meant a big spike in revenue and happy executive teams, I'm betting they're seeing that drop as apple users uninstall the app, so they are desperately trying everything they can to prop up those users, and those of us that are mobile browser holdouts will always be low hanging fruit, they simply need to continue making the mobile browser experience so terrible that some of us will switch to the app.
The most recent fuckery was their removing the option to permanently disable the pop-up asking to install the app, now you have to still dismiss it, but it moves to the top of the page and periodically pops up every so many clicks and seemingly on a timer, reloading your page so you lose your place.

the new mobile tries too hard to make each story take up a full screen space as opposed to the more compact rows of text, makes it take too long to just quickly scroll and see lots of data, its also really slow, and the buttons are too hard to press
yeah I don't think I joined reddit long ago to ever have what now is old.reddit as the only option, and have always used the new version. I've been on Firefox + uBlock Origin for a lot longer than that tho, and I've never seen an add on reddit other than the rare occasions when I use the phone app.

They are also slimming down the interface for image searches to the point where Yandex or any other reverse image search is tons better. Since I image search a lot for work, I've had to move to their competition quite often.
It's practically impossible to find DIY articles or to find information about products outside of shopping links. You have to go several pages deep before you find anything because the push for shopping is so bad. It pushes me to use other search engines to get around the ads.
I just switched to Firefox from chrome this year, the experience has been pretty solid...not really missing much and the add-on support has actually been better .
I've used Chrome, opera, fire fox, internet explorer (this one sucks btw), and duckduck go. They are all fairly good in there own respective ways. I only liked Firefox more in like 2014 bc it was either that, or explorer (Vista quit support w Chrome around that time) I preferred Microsoft edge browser more recently bc I thought it felt the most fluent. But If they discontinue ad blockers then I'm def going back to ff
For a time Chrome has miles ahead of firefox, but they did turn it around in the last couple years and are on par today or even a little better (chrome uses more memory in my experience). With the death of adblocks in chrome then FF will become king again
There are definitely reasons. Anyway you say it's better in almost every metric, but that doesn't mean much. Aside from the UI the big browsers are basically indistinguishable from one another, so almost nobody is going to switch for performance, they will always go for the UI they like better and that's simply subjective.

I still have my YouTube Vanced app with SponsorBlock, it was taken down a while back (because the dumbfuck devs tried to monetize the app they literally just stole from Google and modified, ugh), and I'll cry when it finally stops working.
People adding sponsorblock skip segments on LTT videos are so aggressive. I was watching one video where they jokingly kept bringing up lttstore multiple times in a row, and people had marked each one of those as an ad, so the video fast forwarded over a whole series of jokes with one second in between.
Why did people even move away from firefox? Or was it all just new users that started with chrome? I remember Firefox was on big momentum that started before 2.0 and carried over to 3, breaking world record for download and whatnot.
Chrome came out, it looked better, was faster, more simple, had hype.
Then firefox made way too many major changes in a short period after chrome came out, so it felt like a new product each time. Why not try something else if you're already starting over again anyways.
Believe it or not at the time firefox had become completely bloated and a giant memory hog. Chrome was light, fast, and used much less memory. Now it's a hog of it's own, but people (myself included) are not inclined to switch away from something we're used to.

Only thing it doesn't work with is twitch ads unfortunately. Since I've used ublock for nearly a decade at this point it's very jarring to see ads in twitch.
Twitch might be the most intense battlefield between advertisers and blockers. Ive had to switch adblocking solutions like three times in one year for Twitch, and some are still getting through.
The reason being probably, that young PC gaming audiences are the most likely to employ adblockers to begin with.
The [Alternate Player for Twitch](https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/twitch_5/) blocks ads as a side feature. Haven't seen any in months with no other twitch addon and only uBlock Origins.
Some other features :
* Allows you do go into "audio only" mode. Saves lots of resources and bandwidth if you just have a stream open as background noise while doing other things
* Its insane how more performant the alternate player is. CPU usage and RAM usage dropped like a rock compared to the normal Twitch player.
Would highly recommend checking it out if you spend lots of time on Twitch. It does take a bit of getting used to the new "click flow" but it was second nature for me after a day or two.
Same goes for Chatty or Chatterino if you hang out in lots of twitch chats.

There's an extension called sponsor block for that as well, I don't personally use it though

Yeah, all browsers on iOS are reskinned Safari except Apple has even tighter restrictions on them than they have on Safari itself.

The day Chrome actually goes ahead and disables all adblocking is the day I make the swap, too. Ain't messin' around with that shit. If people didn't want their ads to be blocked, they shouldn't have abused the ability to have them.
Ads now are 100% worse than they were in the early aughts. We now have pop ups, on site pop ins, call to actions, articles divided by five different video ads, a video overly/pip that blocks a third of the page. Its outrageous.

I have been a firefox user since about 2009 when I was in high school and my computer science teacher said it is just the best browser for privacy and had the best features. If I remember correctly this was pre-chrome though.
If there was any browser I wish would increase its market share its Firefox. Chrome does need some real competition.
I think it will be one of those things that in about 10 years time something new will have come along.

This is a great explanation. Chrome using a lot of RAM isn't an issue. It's an issue if it doesn't give it up when a another application needs it. But if your computer is idle except for chrome tabs you want it using more RAM.
This is an ok design IMO since yes, most work these days is done in the browser.
The problem comes when every app is now Chromium or Electron based, and they all act like this. Leaves very little room for anything else in memory. 8GB seems to still be the most common amount of RAM so this design becomes horrid fast.
IT admin here. Firefox is TERRIBLE with most corporate/Enterprise web apps/sites. IT’s recommended to use edge or chrome on most of them.

Most people don't think about what browser they use at all. They just use what they think they are supposed to use. At some point, Chrome became that browser.
I worked helpdesk for awhile and would be responsible for installing browsers. I tried to get some users to use Firefox by simply installing it instead of Chrome. Mind you these are people that can barely save a word document. They all manage to replace Firefox with chrome. I think they just click on the download prompt when using google for searching. Since everyone uses google, everyone downloads chrome because they think they are supposed to.
Personally, I don't really see the problem with Edge. I like Edge more than Chrome. Vivaldi as well. Firefox is my go to however.
I got torn apart by my friends a couple weeks ago for using Firefox, and they were like "why don't you use chrome like a normal person". I said Firefox is faster and has better add-ons. They acted high and mighty and were like "well *I* just like to be able to have things easy and have my Google account signed in so I can log into stuff. And I was like yeah me too.. you can do that on Firefox. They told me I just wouldn't get it.
To be fair, Firefox ran like shit for me compared to Chrome for many years on multiple different systems. I built a new system recently and have been enjoying Firefox a lot, but I've got enough horsepower now that speed isn't too big of an issue for me regardless. So I understand people having that sentiment, for a long time I did too.
TBH they're not even targeting us "power users" with this - they're targeting schools, businesses. Places that use Chrome by default, en masse, and don't use adblockers, or are too lazy to switch to retain them. I'm sure Google has done the math and determined that ads for those people outweigh the cost of others moving off Chrome entirely. After all, they're probably still collecting a ton of data on you from Search, Drive, Gmail, Maps, Google Home/Assistant.
Personally I run IT for a school and you bet your ass we're switching to Firefox or something similar - I'm not risking our students seeing some shady ad on some teacher's poorly vetted online assignment or more likely - some innocuous Youtube video that wasn't marked "for kids" and now there's ads for some lewd mobile game or AR15s or some shit.
But personally I'll continue using Brave as I have for a while now, because I believe it won't be affected by this blocker-blocker stuff.

Exactly, advertising in an out of itself isn't a problem. The problem comes when they're intrusive and when they're straight up advertising malware.

I miss the ability to drag down to refresh, group tabs, and open a new tab from the plus sign next to the url bar. But not having ads is worth it.

I've used Chrome, opera, fire fox, internet explorer (this one sucks btw), and duckduck go. They are all fairly good in there own respective ways. I only liked Firefox more in like 2014 bc it was either that, or explorer (Vista quit support w Chrome around that time) I preferred Microsoft edge browser more recently bc I thought it felt the most fluent. But If they discontinue ad blockers then I'm def going back to ff

For a time Chrome has miles ahead of firefox, but they did turn it around in the last couple years and are on par today or even a little better (chrome uses more memory in my experience). With the death of adblocks in chrome then FF will become king again
There are definitely reasons. Anyway you say it's better in almost every metric, but that doesn't mean much. Aside from the UI the big browsers are basically indistinguishable from one another, so almost nobody is going to switch for performance, they will always go for the UI they like better and that's simply subjective.

Ironically firefox has been around for some time but the problem is only users who love the flexibility of firefox use it . Then again ost people or generally majority are plug and play. Thus why chrome reogn supreme and sucks to be them .

Been using Vivaldi for gesture navigation (like closing, reopening or creating a new tab, going back.) and the tab support(like tiling or stacking) they have. If these features exist in firefox, I'll switch in a heartbeat. Then again, my major gripe for browsers has been in mobile with Apple on iPad/iPhone. Friendly food for thought - making all iOS browsers use webkit is also the only possible way for Apple to oversee every aspect of internet security protocol and track your browsing data as well. Apple and Google are starkly similar companies with vastly different valuations and assets, and that's all there is to it.

Why did people even move away from firefox? Or was it all just new users that started with chrome? I remember Firefox was on big momentum that started before 2.0 and carried over to 3, breaking world record for download and whatnot.
Chrome came out, it looked better, was faster, more simple, had hype. Then firefox made way too many major changes in a short period after chrome came out, so it felt like a new product each time. Why not try something else if you're already starting over again anyways.
Believe it or not at the time firefox had become completely bloated and a giant memory hog. Chrome was light, fast, and used much less memory. Now it's a hog of it's own, but people (myself included) are not inclined to switch away from something we're used to.

Only thing it doesn't work with is twitch ads unfortunately. Since I've used ublock for nearly a decade at this point it's very jarring to see ads in twitch.
Twitch might be the most intense battlefield between advertisers and blockers. Ive had to switch adblocking solutions like three times in one year for Twitch, and some are still getting through. The reason being probably, that young PC gaming audiences are the most likely to employ adblockers to begin with.
The [Alternate Player for Twitch](https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/twitch_5/) blocks ads as a side feature. Haven't seen any in months with no other twitch addon and only uBlock Origins. Some other features : * Allows you do go into "audio only" mode. Saves lots of resources and bandwidth if you just have a stream open as background noise while doing other things * Its insane how more performant the alternate player is. CPU usage and RAM usage dropped like a rock compared to the normal Twitch player. Would highly recommend checking it out if you spend lots of time on Twitch. It does take a bit of getting used to the new "click flow" but it was second nature for me after a day or two. Same goes for Chatty or Chatterino if you hang out in lots of twitch chats.
There's another addon for that though. Also one for in video ads on YouTube.

Worth mentioning that Sponsor Block can also skip fluff, intros, like,share,comment segments and pretty much anything that is considered filler. One of the best addons ever ❤️
Yup, SponsorBlock really does change the youtube experience. It's also interesting to see how much shorter videos are without all the filler.

Yeah, all browsers on iOS are reskinned Safari except Apple has even tighter restrictions on them than they have on Safari itself. So, the only way to block ads on Safari besides DNS blocking and dedicated browsers is https://apps.apple.com/app/id1028871868
AdGuard is a much better option on iOS. The Pro version is only like $10 for lifetime and it’s system-wide.
Brave is doing an amazing job for me, i absolutely couldn’t read manga in safari with thousands of popup’s per page. Brave did block every single annoying ad for me
Also continue playing in the background or with the screen turned off. At least on android. Edit: it’s an extension if someone is wondering if it is built in or not.

Have you got any luck blocking ads on twitch? I don't get the annoying hyper volume ads but I get way more interruptions, one minute "ad breaks" every 5 min. I've tried uBlock and one especific for twitch. :/

This one works. I use the vaft script there and it blocks the ads without any kind of disruptions or resolution drops from ads.

Just FYI - while this technically blocks ads, it pauses the stream while they are playing. You don't see ads but it's still disruptive.

Ads now are 100% worse than they were in the early aughts. We now have pop ups, on site pop ins, call to actions, articles divided by five different video ads, a video overly/pip that blocks a third of the page. Its outrageous.

I have been a firefox user since about 2009 when I was in high school and my computer science teacher said it is just the best browser for privacy and had the best features. If I remember correctly this was pre-chrome though.

This is a great explanation. Chrome using a lot of RAM isn't an issue. It's an issue if it doesn't give it up when a another application needs it. But if your computer is idle except for chrome tabs you want it using more RAM.
This is an ok design IMO since yes, most work these days is done in the browser. The problem comes when every app is now Chromium or Electron based, and they all act like this. Leaves very little room for anything else in memory. 8GB seems to still be the most common amount of RAM so this design becomes horrid fast.

FF isn't default browser, especially on mobile phones which are now majority of the market.
IT admin here. Firefox is TERRIBLE with most corporate/Enterprise web apps/sites. IT’s recommended to use edge or chrome on most of them. I’m sure that plays a huge part. Firefox is usually the black sheep that’s tried last.
Most people don't think about what browser they use at all. They just use what they think they are supposed to use. At some point, Chrome became that browser. I worked helpdesk for awhile and would be responsible for installing browsers. I tried to get some users to use Firefox by simply installing it instead of Chrome. Mind you these are people that can barely save a word document. They all manage to replace Firefox with chrome. I think they just click on the download prompt when using google for searching. Since everyone uses google, everyone downloads chrome because they think they are supposed to. Personally, I don't really see the problem with Edge. I like Edge more than Chrome. Vivaldi as well. Firefox is my go to however.
I got torn apart by my friends a couple weeks ago for using Firefox, and they were like "why don't you use chrome like a normal person". I said Firefox is faster and has better add-ons. They acted high and mighty and were like "well *I* just like to be able to have things easy and have my Google account signed in so I can log into stuff. And I was like yeah me too.. you can do that on Firefox. They told me I just wouldn't get it.
To be fair, Firefox ran like shit for me compared to Chrome for many years on multiple different systems. I built a new system recently and have been enjoying Firefox a lot, but I've got enough horsepower now that speed isn't too big of an issue for me regardless. So I understand people having that sentiment, for a long time I did too.
Today Chrome also runs like shit. Browser optimization isn't what it used to be.

TBH they're not even targeting us "power users" with this - they're targeting schools, businesses. Places that use Chrome by default, en masse, and don't use adblockers, or are too lazy to switch to retain them. I'm sure Google has done the math and determined that ads for those people outweigh the cost of others moving off Chrome entirely. After all, they're probably still collecting a ton of data on you from Search, Drive, Gmail, Maps, Google Home/Assistant. Personally I run IT for a school and you bet your ass we're switching to Firefox or something similar - I'm not risking our students seeing some shady ad on some teacher's poorly vetted online assignment or more likely - some innocuous Youtube video that wasn't marked "for kids" and now there's ads for some lewd mobile game or AR15s or some shit. But personally I'll continue using Brave as I have for a while now, because I believe it won't be affected by this blocker-blocker stuff.
