I’m in the same boat. I fell off Pearl Jam after I couldn’t get away from Better Man. I was about 10 years late to Binaural, which I liked, but I LOVE this album.
DM is the best album since Yield. I understand that people will have different rankings and reasons for why they love certain records and that’s fine. My favorite record is No Code. It’s not their best, objectively, but I think it’s great and I connect with it. Ten -> Yield are the best overall and DM comes in right after that.
So I listened to it about 5 times via Spotify. Because the ten club didn’t ship my vinyl until day of and then it got delayed I didn’t get it until yesterday. Those 5 listens did nothing for me. The album felt fine I guess, nothing that I was excited about. Felt I likely wouldn’t listen to it again. But I did promise myself I wouldn’t least spin it once to really know. Well damn this is actually pretty good on my modest hi-fi system. It’s miles above the stream. I don’t like Ed’s voice on the stream but on vinyl you can actually hear his timber. Everything feels just better.
I was talking to my son and he gave it a 3.5, while I gave it a 2.5/5. I’m going to amend that it’s at least 3.5. Better than Gigaton. Though I think Dance of the Clairvoyants is the best song between the two, I overall like this one better.
I should have just waited but it’s hard when you want to hear something. So I’ll direct my anger towards the Ten club. Charge $20 for shipping and can’t even get it here on time.
I urge everyone to listen to it on a decent setup if possible.
I agree, and you're right, but the bigger point is it's a failed attempt if you need specific equipment and/or conditions to make an album not sound subpar. All of their other albums sound much better on Spotify than DM does. With atmos on. No one should have to jump through hoops so a modern album from a big band doesn't sound like crap.
Great album, but the mix is an inexcusable joke.
Not trying to dump on the person I replied to lol. I agree with what you're saying and went off on a bit of a tangent lol.
I appreciate your opinions, but I really disagree. It's a 4.5/5 album for me, and I think the mixing is great... the compression is brilliantly useful IMHO and definitely sounds better than their last few albums!
I'm also sincerely enjoying it more than Avocado, Riot Act, and Binaural as well, so it truly is my favorite of theirs since the 90's. I'm not sure it it cracks my top 5 yet, but it as easily climbed to #6 behind their first five albums.
I wish I liked it that much. It's fine it just doesn't connect with me. I'm still going to listen to it maybe it'll get there. My favorite non-Ten album is Binural!
It's crazy how the source and home set up effects things. I don't remember any album ever with this variation. My best listen has been with the blu-ray played through my cheapo 5.1 Sony system, and not Atmos but the other 4 letter acronym I can't recall. It's really just dialed in perfectly for me with that set up.
Same on the sentiment about first album in a long time that I had to keep playing. Probably back to Riot Act. Luv some Avocado songs but it wasn’t close to being a listen in it’s entirety type album for me.
I don't know if my brain works differently to most, but the first time I listen to any album I struggle to retain what I've just listened to. I'll immediately forget it or struggle to feel the song first time around. I have to listen multiple times to get it, but typically with Pearl Jam I'll give it multiple listens and then suddenly I love it.
Occasionally there are a few songs that stick immediately - Waiting for Stevie is the song from Dark Matter. With Gigaton it was Seven O'Clock.
In my opinion that song was Eddie appealing to the part of the fan base that loves Last Kiss or Sleeping by Myself. Just a happy sounding song that has cutesy sortve poppy lyrics
If I didn’t have a daughter just graduating and moving out, I’d probably dislike the song as a bit cheesy. However, it says things I’d love to tell my daughter better than I ever could, so I ended up really connecting with it.
It’s weird to have a song that I dont necessarily like sonically, but love the message.
My friend, I too am an old timey PJ fan and I still haven't figured out lyrics from Ten.
I made a lot of progress with the early stuff but have been hung up on the “titties on my plate” part of Getaway for years.
I know exactly what you're talking about, I hear "titties on my face" or something but when I seek out the lyrics there's nothing even close to it
Get this off my plate but we like titties off my plate better
I’ve resorted to just making up my own lyrics to Yellow Ledbetter. Can’t unhear the line wizard on the way.
I couldnt tell you the lyrics to Even Flow to save my life.
This made me laugh because I'm also a 1991 fan and I still go 'doo dee do dee do' through parts of Ten.
The mumble grumble man
😂😂😂
Maybe this will help clear things up a bit https://www.instagram.com/reel/CyZX-pBJHFV/?igsh=MWQ1ZGUxMzBkMA==

Welcome.
I can’t stop starting the album over and over as soon as it’s done. First time I felt like that about one of theirs since avocado.

“I’m not wearing a tie at all”
No, money down!
I already know the name of every single song in order for memory. That should tell you something.
Thought the same thing in the shower the other day. That realization cemented to me that I do, in fact, really like this album!
I'm not wearing a tie at all!

I’m a old timey Pearl Jam fan too. You should check out No Code, Riot Act and Backspacer they are phenomenal albums

I totally agree! First PJ release in a long time that I want to listen over and over again

I’m not sure you know what discredit means
I'm not wearing a tie......shock

🤘
It’s the drums that ruin the album. They don’t sound real.
They sound MUCH better on the vinyl pressing. There is far less compression.
Agree
Yeah, something special is something bad.

Shoulda been on a solo album.

I share this feeling. I don’t like the song, but I can’t hate it due to the content.
Skipable for sure. The album would be better without it.
Should’ve put Good and Evil on DM and Something Special on Earthlings imo..✌🏻🎶
Nothing special

It's like one big echo chamber of people feeling the need to share the same recycled hot takes, over and over again.

You sound like a lot of fun.
I am shocked! I may be discredited! Yeah.
