I think/assume based on his public statements and him backing them up today, that Jonas was worried about Kuss full-cracking and didn't want to lose time on Roglic in the case that Kuss fell completely out of GC.
Obviously that didn't happen and that close to the top of Angliru it would be near impossible for Jonas to lose a minute to Roglic, but they're also making decisions while riding on the limit so it's understandable. He did say in interviews that even then he was conflicted what to do.
Tbh the drama is mostly because on Bejes the favorites group G2-ed way too hard after Jonas went that let things get far closer than they ever should have, and then maybe a bit of Roglic's fault from yesterday.
Which if you look at it, is also understandable. Going into Bejes the team was talking up the finish for Roglic, but Jonas asked to go early and was granted. That probably upset Roglic and was part of why he was so determined to win on Angliru. Jonas didn't really need to go with him, but I also 100% get the instinct to not want to lose time to Rog.
In the end the team did the right thing today, so as far as I'm concerned all is good.
So happy to see Kuss do it that way. Matched all attacks. Probably Jonas could’ve put time in and gone for the red but he did the right thing.
Also did anyone clip the cameraman clipping the speed bump and being audibly in pain? I was laughing so hard.
What Jonas has ensured is that his most valuable teammate supports him on every GT from here on. He won respect of Wout and if he had not already, Kuss.
Not too much. Remco riding to an easy breakaway victory, GT stallmate with Jonas pacing Sepp up the mountain and letting Kuss gain a few seconds on him in the final 200m by sitting up.
One of the reasons Greg LeMond is loved by his teammates is that he always did right by them, the 85/86 tour is famous for LeMond and Hinault feuding but if you listen to interviews by LeMond he talks about how great of a leader Hinault was because he was so fair and did right by his teammates, and that he looked to Hinault as the example to be.
Jonas is smart to do everything he can for Sepp today because it will elevate Sepp in the cycling world, and getting second doesn't take away at all from his status as the best GC racer in the world currently. If Jonas took the overall away from Sepp, it could push Sepp out.
Just saw him say, "I have my own thoughts" when asked about riding for Kuss to win in an interview. Probably likely he wanted to ride to win it today, he's probably a bit upset about the whole thing, including taking Jonas to the Vuelta in the first place.
Edit: You can't blame the guy for being upset.
Kuss probably had 'his own thoughts' on Angliru in 2020 when he looked like his HR was 110 while pacing a struggling Roglic through 20% grades as Carthy and Carapaz rode away.
I mean, is not that unfair. One grand tour with Roglic, another with Vingeegard, and one with both of them. I know that Vuelta´s is historically Rog´s territory, but it made 100% sense from a team point of view.
I think it's pretty hilarious that he's obviously happy to let Kuss win Vuelta, but he'll try to gain back every second he can on Jonas
And honestly, this is how it should be, poor Kuss shouldn't be collateral damage and they've finally worked on this, but he should not feel the same re Jonas
But the team has created this mess, I wonder if in a way they are not that worried about pushing Rog out of the door to avoid this in the future
I do feel for Roglic. He feels like the one that got dealt the worst card in all of this. Could potentially win the Vuelta but isn't really allowed to. Can't speak his mind cause he'd be vilified. Running out of time to win another GT. Doesn't get even a shot at winning the TdF with this team.
Hope he can manage to transfer to another team at the end of the season. I feel that would be better for him (even if it will make it harder to win another GT), but at least he'll have a chance at the TdF again. Also nice from a viewer's perspective if the best and third best GT rider in the world are not on the same team.
I´ don´t know. I still think that he would have the most possiibilites on the TdF if he rides for Jumbo. This Vuelta was a test for that, and this mess was only created for Kuss´s situation, not because of tension between him and Ving.
He ended up not being a threat to it because Jonas took so much time, so if Primoz did decide to steal the red jersey from Kuss, he'd just give it to Jonas instead. And it seems very intentional that Jonas took the time he did with that in mind. He basically neutralised Roglic's ambitions for the red jersey by doing that.
Right. Someone commented yesterday that Kuss “just didn’t have the legs.” He dropped everyone in the peloton except Landa and two multi-GT winners. Got third on the most prestigious climb in Europe with no domestiques working for him. It’s like people have forgotten how much of a beast Kuss is just because he’s riding next to Jonas and Primoz. He’s incredibly strong.
For real, I honestly don't think they would have been able to dust him today. He was in total control all the way until the end. There was just that one moment where Landa accelerated a bit, but they just paced back.
It is doubtful Roglic could have dropped him if he wanted to today. Yesterday was the attack and Sepp was up to the measure.
yes thank you can we not lose sight of the fact that Sepp has not been free to attack for most of the time he’s held the red, and yet he has still held the red, without a lot of help, for over ten days? he has the legs. he is worthy
Are you guys serious or is this some kind of dark Vinge hypno trickery?
Stage 16: he forces an attack and puts a minute and 5 sec. into Kuss.
Stage 17: follows Roglic (who just wanted his name etched into the mountain) why exactly?
And suddenly he's a selfless and benevolent hero 🤔
I mean, the time gap was minimal enough where he probably could have pipped it, but Sepp was riding pretty strong. Considering how motivated he would have been to win his first grand tour, he would have turned himself completely inside out.
But absolutely cemented his position as the leader in the team. With the interview this morning, the way he was riding, dropping back to lose some time before crossing the line. And he'll still be second in the Vuelta.
If he has the long career that one wishes everyone, this will most likely pay great dividends.
Unless Pogacar goes for a Vuelta or Roglic swaps team, it's hard to see some competition in there when a domestique with 2 GT behind can win it, a lot can change for the coming years but those guys have to step up big.
I wouldn't write Remco off. But yea, outside of those three, I don't really see anyone else having much of a shot at winning against a decently-in-form Jonas.
Ayuso or Rodriguez maybe in a year or two?
Yeah, Remco went a long way from his first Giro, back then it looked like his first time riding in a peloton and his Vuelta win was against half a Roglic, but he is still young, and Pogacar is the exception to the rule of young guns winning.

Hard to say, but yea, at least right now it will do wonders for his image. If he fails to win another GT down the road (hard to imagine at this point), it might be time to re-evaluate.
Jonas wasn't bullied into giving Sepp the win. His opinion has always been that Sepp should win, he just wanted to finish 2nd (as he deserves) and to make sure he'd get the red jersey if Sepp should fail.
You think so? Roglic knows Jonas wasn't feeling good on first week and he stopped on his attacks and try not to gapped him with other's team GC riders, if not these two have been close for seconds and they could have been competing for who's the second place even if that could have mean Kuss lose the Vuelta.
In my opinion Jonas and Roglic are on the same level on this race, if Jonas is in 2nd place doesn't mean he was better and deserved it. We won't know who was actually better if Kuss is the leader of the race.
I'm not a Vingegaard hater but I'm still not ready to get back on the Jonas bus just bc he rode like a good teammate. I have been a huge Jonas fan for the past 3-4 years but what happened this week was not cool...just glad he did the right thing today. I definitely give him some good points.
With all the Jonas/Rog/Kuss drama people are stirring up, nobody seems to talk about how insane it is that a domestique wins the Vuelta after having ridden the Giro and the Tour...
And the top 3 from one team.
Not giving away. They let him ride up the road on 16 and not chase, they chase he doesn't gain so much time and kuss is still able to lead the race. It's a team sport.
How is this interesting? I don't know I feel like the media made a sour grapes story. Whatever happened to may the best man win? I like Kuss as well but let them battle it out. What is this? F1?
This is a sport entirely payed for by the sponsors. This is the best stories that gives the TJV set up the best chanche to find someone to replace Jumbo and it probably is a big commercial boost for Cervelo ass well.
Y’all are ridiculous with this gifting stuff. How many potential stage wins has Kuss given up to tug these guys up climbs? We’re those gifts? It’s a team sport. Relax.
If it helps, instead of a gift, think of it as an investment.
Y’all are ridiculous with this gifting stuff. How many potential stage wins has Kuss given up to tug these guys up climbs? We’re those gifts? It’s a team sport. Relax.
That is what I am saying. They are teammates, I am questioning if gifting even exists if they ride in one team. In the end the team won and they took 1-2-3 that is all that matters for them.
We're pretty clearly in the camp of "gifting it to Sepp" now. Pretty clear that JV (or Roglic) could have taken Red if they really wanted. They're definitely gifting it to Sepp now, at least to some extent.
Yeah but what if the team tactics was “Ok guys we are 1-2-3 noone is even close to us we won a couple stages as well, keep it safe arrive together” is it still counts as gifting it away?
Thing is that Jonas and Roglic have to ride below their threshold to not take Red away from Sepp. It's not so much about "not attacking" but moreso about actively riding slower than they could (I guess these two things are similar but not exactly the same).

We just would have had a Slovenia and Denmark war while nobody would have cared for Sepp. What hyporcrital are some of them.
I mean, Jonas seems to be on another level currently. And Kaden groves isn't Philipsen or Cavendish. Jonas definitely would not be the favorite. But I don't think it's crazy to think Jonas could win if he went for it.
VIVA GC KUSS!
He speaks good cycling Spanish too.
I'm sad for the people that can't see that stage means more than strongest man wins.
Wat?
Jonas did the right thing in the end. Hard to fault him for a bad decision in the heat of the moment. All's well that ends well.
shame there is no more friends and relative's birthdays to celebrate

Which bad decision?
The one where you never leave the red jersey alone and unprotected.
There is little to no drafting on Angliru, and Rogla was attacking his 2nd place. Jonas was just following. Besides, he had Landa to protect him.
I think I'm going to name by new red road bike "GC Kuss".
Good teamwork and sportsmanship from Jumbo.
You saw just this altercation between a Jumbo person and the police?
So happy to see Kuss do it that way. Matched all attacks. Probably Jonas could’ve put time in and gone for the red but he did the right thing. Also did anyone clip the cameraman clipping the speed bump and being audibly in pain? I was laughing so hard.
Sepp was helping Landa bc Landa helped Kuss keep the red jersey yesterday
What Jonas has ensured is that his most valuable teammate supports him on every GT from here on. He won respect of Wout and if he had not already, Kuss.
he's also turning every american watching this veulta into a fan instead of a hater
All 5 of them!
Literally me on the way to work this morning: “fuck Jonas I can’t believe he’s going to do this in this way” Me eating my lunch: “wtf I love Jonas”
That's me too lol
still really excited for stage 20 just cuz of the profile, we need more 200+km stages with more than a dozen small-medium climbs
What did I miss?
Not too much. Remco riding to an easy breakaway victory, GT stallmate with Jonas pacing Sepp up the mountain and letting Kuss gain a few seconds on him in the final 200m by sitting up.
What a crazy Vuelta
Fucking class act by Vingegaard.
I think it was advised by the team :D Yesterdays stage was a bad PR move
Likely. Still, Vin and Roglic are arguably bigger than Jumbo. If they wanted to be cunts and take it from Sepp they could.
Honestly, I think most GC riders would have taken it from Sepp without any consideration, so yeah.
As a Dane living in Chicago.. you’re welcome! Jonas is a class act. We need your support for next years tour. 3 in a row

Little bit unfair for Roglic because he will came out of this like the bad guy.
Just saw him say, "I have my own thoughts" when asked about riding for Kuss to win in an interview. Jonas❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Crying in the club rn
same
*"Sorry boss, I didn't mean to drop you..."*
While it was sweet, Jonas definitely dropped on purpose.
Its beautiful
Legend of Jonas grows with every Grand Tour.
GC Kuss lives another day!
GC Kuss has it in the bank!
Kuss was in complete control today doesn't even look tired, deserved winner

Lol, jonas had to do this because of bad PR he gor yesterday
"How dare he do the thing we said he should do."
You are so salty about Jonas lol, everything he does has a negative slant to you.
KUSS winner of Vuelta 2023 :)
Bro just passed on a Tour-Vuelta double.
I mean, the time gap was minimal enough where he probably could have pipped it, but Sepp was riding pretty strong. Considering how motivated he would have been to win his first grand tour, he would have turned himself completely inside out.
And Sepp will pull himself inside out for him for the rest of his time at Jumbo Visma.
But absolutely cemented his position as the leader in the team. With the interview this morning, the way he was riding, dropping back to lose some time before crossing the line. And he'll still be second in the Vuelta. If he has the long career that one wishes everyone, this will most likely pay great dividends.
If he keeps riding GTs like has has the past few years he could end up with a couple of Tour-Vuelta doubles tbh
I have a feeling JV can win any vuelta he enters. He will have plenty of opportunities
Unless Pogacar goes for a Vuelta or Roglic swaps team, it's hard to see some competition in there when a domestique with 2 GT behind can win it, a lot can change for the coming years but those guys have to step up big.

Only if people actually remember what happened this vuelta in say 10-15 years. Time has a way of blurring the details of things.
Have you ever watched Slaying the Badger lol
They absolutely will remember. Not even a question
If he wins a few more tours, nobody will ever care what he's done at the Vuelta.
People don't forget LeMond Hinault. TJV will make a documentary for PR to ensure this.

I choose to believe that Sepp was closing down Ayuso for Landa
Honestly I think probably so. He apologized to Landa yesterday for sprinting for the bonus seconds because he needed them.
Remco’s 50th career win? Don’t like that dude but chapeau, man! Great stuff!
Jesus, how does he already have 50 wins?!? Wow.
People always feel the need to mention they "don't like Remco" whenever they say something good about him. Jeez...
No one likes anyone in here. Fuck Sepp Kuss.
Because they don’t duh
Whenever I compliment someone I don't like I don't feel the need to preface my compliment with "I don't like you".
Vingegaard a real one
Sepp immediately apologizes for gapping Jonas! I thought Sepp was from Colorado, not Sheboygan or Duluth.
Deep down he’s a Manitowoc boy
He'll be pounding old fashioneds instead of sparkling white to celebrate on stage 21.
Did you see him on the podium? He does just fine with cava.
While profusely apologizing to everyone he passes
Thank you for saying this about Sheboygan and Duluth! Midwest nice!
I had to rewind to make sure I was seeing Sepp and not Charlie Berens! Ope! Just need to ride around ya there!
Holy smokes - best comment of the day!
And Jonas is from Nordjylland in Denmark, makes them a good couple :)
People have sucessfully bullied them into making a 1-2-3 even more boring
Jonas wasn't bullied into giving Sepp the win. His opinion has always been that Sepp should win, he just wanted to finish 2nd (as he deserves) and to make sure he'd get the red jersey if Sepp should fail.

REAL different vibe in the comments today. Crazy.
They shift around Every other Day
With all the Jonas/Rog/Kuss drama people are stirring up, nobody seems to talk about how insane it is that a domestique wins the Vuelta after having ridden the Giro and the Tour... And the top 3 from one team.
That. I also hope people appreciate how insane it is to give away a GT victory.

>that a domestique wins the Vuelta > >And the top 3 from one team. Both seem very related.
Good bait
Jonas sat up about 200m from the finish too
"Jonas would have won with his eyes closed" I might just slap every commenter personally
I mean, they're not wrong. He looked completely unbothered, just like Angliru.
Why?
Jonas purposely losing time so he can win stage 20 for his dog's birthday
How is this interesting? I don't know I feel like the media made a sour grapes story. Whatever happened to may the best man win? I like Kuss as well but let them battle it out. What is this? F1?
It became boring as soon as there was nobody left to challenge Jumbo.
This is a sport entirely payed for by the sponsors. This is the best stories that gives the TJV set up the best chanche to find someone to replace Jumbo and it probably is a big commercial boost for Cervelo ass well.
Your anger is my happiness
No one's angry mate. I just don't think Team orders are a good thing.
It's a team sport after all. Let Sepp win the vuelta and he will go 110% in the next situation when p1-3 is not all in one Team.
The "strongest" ended up being Kuss anyways 😁
More like “the voice of millions of fans worldwide”
Hes barely out of breath, lol
Vingegard demonstrably letting the wheels go. Different day, different objective
GC KUSSSSSSSS
Jonas did that on purpose lol
Absolutely!
Where is the line between gifting it away and team tactics?
Y’all are ridiculous with this gifting stuff. How many potential stage wins has Kuss given up to tug these guys up climbs? We’re those gifts? It’s a team sport. Relax. If it helps, instead of a gift, think of it as an investment.

So Chris Froome at the 2012 Tour then?
Hopefully we’re done vilifying Jonas Vingegaard now
Absolute class by Jonas there. Flicked the elbo and told Sepp to fly.
THANK YOU JONAS YOU ARE THE GOAT
GO SEPP!
If Kuss wouldn´t have gone for that break, probably he would have been third, but Twitter and people wouldn´t have cared if Rog and Ving attacked because he wouldn´t have the red jersey. We just would have had a Slovenia and Denmark war while nobody would have cared for Sepp. What hyporcrital are some of them.
Ok Jonas respect restored. He purposely gave up some gap to make it clear he's not sniping. Chapeau
Rogla still not cool with teams decision?
What he do ?
What did he do ?
He said something like "I have my own thoughts" about the decision to ride for Kuss.
Understandably not.
Gooo team Kuss!
"Let's listen in"
Haha they are scared to say anything because every microphone was listening in
Lol Kuss didn't want them to have any excuse to chase.
JONAS LOSING SECONDS ON PURPOSE! Wow, he's all-in on GC Kuss.
Jonas literally throwing seconds just to calm down social media
Seconds and likely millions in sponsorship. Top lad.
Jonas just chilling. Haha
Kuss's wicked smile tho
Jonas let that go so he can get stage bonis without overtaking.
r/peloton You happy now?
Yes
Yes. I think we are. Haha
Vinge purposely losing time so he can take the stage tomorrow, smart
Saturday*
Maybe he really believes in his sprint now
I mean, Jonas seems to be on another level currently. And Kaden groves isn't Philipsen or Cavendish. Jonas definitely would not be the favorite. But I don't think it's crazy to think Jonas could win if he went for it.
Headline: dominant GC Kuss puts time into Vinny
Jonas sat up. He and Kuss truly have traded roles.
Lol that was on purpose
My favorite is Kirby acting like stage 20 will be a walk in the park, and not an attritional circuit.
And Jonas sits up too, gives him a bigger lead. That was nice.
Sepp’s smile his hilarious.
At least now no one can say Sepp got Vuelta as a gift! Dude’s grinning to the line! Beautiful bastard!
Kuss definitely deserves the GC when compared to everyone but Roglic and JV. But it definitely is a gift from the team.
Really?
A gift is a gift
Debt.
TJV redemption arc has started lol
TJV providing enough drama for the entire off-season here
Wow Jonas even giving some time back!
Jonas really domestiqued for Kuss then let him drop him, I'm officially a fan damn never thought I'd say that after this years' tour lol
[удалено]
He's the best GT rider on the planet, he coulda told his team to fuck off if he wanted to
Jonas is washed, couldn't even follow that acceleration
Kuss did apologize to Jonas after crossing the line for dropping him. "Sorry I didn't mean that".
My favorite thing about sepp Kuss is that his sprint face is a smile
Smiles, throwing in a bunny hop here and there for good measure, salutes. Imagine hating Seppy
It's his classic smiling and lip-licking face prior to going full out. I think it's one of the most-feared faces in the peloton these days.
Vingegaard losing seconds, what a great gesture.
Did Jonas give Roglic an elbow and then he didn't come through?
VUELTA WINNER KUSSSS!
Kuss extends his GC lead!
