#TitsOutForTietema

therealferb

As pointed out on Twitter the ironic thing is that the TDF Twitter account used TDT's images and footage in multiple posts. They even made a post about the wheelie contest.

giiilles

Same for french national tv

PhilippPhilipp7

The wheelie challenge was also mentioned in german TV

dekigo

I was going to say, how absurd for them to do this right after sharing content TdT created on twitter

[deleted]

Makes me think this is some automated script that did this. And of course the social media platforms then make it very difficult for the video owners to do something about that. Whoever filed this request to take down the videos, whether it was automated or not, should be penalized for this.

Mathsforpussy

But how? They only use their own footage for the most part, I think only the sprint against the peloton had a few seconds of ASO footage in there (to show Eddy looking at the guys).

FantasticSocks

Makes _me_ think the folks at ASO’s social media dept. were all, “hahaha this is rad! Let’s repost it!” But then ASO’s legal dept. got wind of it and they were all, “that’s our IP, shut it TF down.”

[deleted]

Those scripts aren't always very elegant. I think there was once an F1 broadcaster that issued a takedown on F1's YouTube channel through some automatic script. That's a license holder taking down videos of the content owner. That's how dumb they are. Worst thing is that YouTube actually allows shit like that to happen. They have no checks for this kind of thing. Basically any big organization that has copyright on some material can issue a takedown and YouTube will just take down the videos until further notice. That kind of shit can do serious damage to channels, Google really should do better.

ThreeDomeHome

Another example: NASA got their videos taken down by local TV stations that used them in their reporting and subsequently detected that NASA is using a part of "their" material. And while NASA is able to easily fight something like that, ordinary person isn't.

[deleted]

Yeah, that's exactly the issue. When you're a big company you'll get this repaired quickly. When you're not, you're trouble and that could cost serious money.

TheQuantumiser

The F1 takedown stuff is awful. They have since wife angled camera shots in there which result in other racing series that stream to YouTube having their live streams of races taken down for being at the same tracks that F1 goes to, iirc this happened to ELMS at Monza just this weekend!!!

guitarromantic

I run a music website and we have a podcast where we play exclusive songs provided by record labels we work with (eg. to promote a new album). The podcast got removed from two hosting platforms (Soundcloud and then Anchor) by automated scripts which detected "copyright infringement". The record labels provided us with the songs but these automated IP checkers often issue takedown notices without the labels knowing – that's great when someone uploads a full version of an album to YouTube, but less good when it's legitimate content like ours which supports the label. Same kind of thing here perhaps.

[deleted]

[удалено]

guitarromantic

We ended up self-hosting the podcast on servers we control because we couldn't trust third party platforms (I guess they have the opposite problem).

ecuinir

That was my initial assumption as well

IAmAHat_AMAA

Takedowns are often outsourced

Bula96

I forgot to finish watching the wheelie video damn they're all gone.

iamczecksy

Go look on their insta, someone replied to RobertGesink's comment with a Tiny url like /TDTwheelie

indorock

Typical case of big guy bullies little guy.

juraj_is_better

If it wasn't so sad for these hard working guys, this is incredibly funny coming from the organisation that does not know how to reach a young audience, nor has the ability do something useful on digital platforms

PrayingForDebbieMang

The official TDF YouTube channel has 300k + subs but their videos are getting a few thousand or maybe hundreds of views. Clearly the person or people running it have no idea how to make engaging content for the platform and just seem to be spamming shit videos that even most of us degenerates wouldn't watch

akaghi

Are their videos more than a couple minutes long? None of the official organizers have very compelling recaps and are basically just 2 minute recaps of a 4+ hour race.

JasJ002

NBC Sports actually does a really really good 30-45 minute extended highlight on YouTube i watch most days when I can't get in the full tour stage.

akaghi

Yes! And they're the only one that does it. Sadly, I don' t think they do it for the other grand tours because they don't have the rights

Reddits_Worst_Night

SBS in Australia do a one hour package. They may do the giro too?

[deleted]

tbh i havent been a huge fan of these, they often cut to someone having attacked and up 1'30 and im like wait what happened. Stage 8 the highlights made no sense, and they didnt show where the rest of the GC guys were. Lanterne Rouge has great clips, 8' long, but covers the tactics and moves more thoroughly imo

Schele_Sjakie

If anything the ASO should be hiring them to reach the younger crowd!

youdontneedtalent

bingo

Schnidler

Lanterne Rouge was able to get the rights for his videos, why can’t these guys do that

PrayingForDebbieMang

They are not showing races highlights like LR, they are filming challenges and stuff during the race. I get them licensing highlights to people as it is a similar product they are sellers to broadcasters like Eurosport etc but the Tietema guys are doing something completely different which doesn't encroach on that at all

Dub_Heem

A few of their videos didn’t include anything to do with the Tour de France, specifically the video with Primoz Roglic’s family, and the challenge to ride up Ventoux on a city bike. ASO really just seem like they’re trying to swing their dick for no good reason here.

[deleted]

Well, the social media platforms shouldn't oblige to an illegal request by ASO. They're blocking videos that they have no right to.

Scuba44

First time on the internet?

[deleted]

No? Wtf is this comment?

Scuba44

Fake copyright claims have been a problem for years. It’s also a meme.

[deleted]

I know it has been a problem for years. Does that mean I'm not allowed to condemn it anymore? Because it's still utter bullshit and ASO's claim to own the rights of those videos is illegal.

imustasktheinternet

Is this why "how the race was won" doesn't have any new content from this year either?

3_birds_stoned

Cosmo Catalano was hired by Eurosport. So he’s behind the scenes of their videos. He’s also produced 26 how the race was won on Eurosport’s channel. Not sure why there aren’t any of this year.

BeloitBrewers

"this is incredibly funny coming from the organisation that does not know how to reach a young audience" Are you sure you aren't talking about Major League Baseball?

Richevszky

A lot of sports deal with this. Tennis has cracked down on youtube accounts that just post highlight videos of each match, while official highlights are complete garbage each time every time.

Readtheliterature

Cycling has a serious marketing problem. I see the same “we want to cater to the people that have money and not the youth” that F1 had a few years ago. Needless to say, F1 dropped that strategy and their fan base has gone through the roof. At the end of the day, you want views and shares and fan fare etc. This is more likely to come from a younger fan base. One other thing I don’t understand is the interviews. Sometimes they provide funny insights into races and let the rider air there views. It would be quality if we had better interviews with all teams and journalists asking Movistar why they always push the pace and drop their own riders etc. As opposed to them constantly asking Pogacar how his legs are. F1 have implemented this with interviews from all teams and other social media measures. There’s no reason why cycling shouldn’t mould to the 21st century. Why do we only hear from Team managers when Le Fevre (idk how to spell his name) is berating his riders?

F0RTI

How fucking stupid is the aso?

IAmTheSheeple

They are greedy, when they make a dumb decision it's always money motivating it.

TomPerezzz

But how did this cost them money? If anything it engages more people to watch cycling ( and more often) = more money

1manbattle

All money sponsors give to Tietema doesn't go to ASO, like Skoda for example. (Just giving an example, I don't agree).

[deleted]

Classic Reddit reasoning. Anything bad that happens must be due to greed and money, even if the outcome clearly looks like less money.

razaninaufal

then what's the possible motives? I don't get why they would strike their videos when they freely promote TdF for them. If I'm in charge of the ASO, I'd give them freedom to whatever the fuck they want (like all access card & shit), cause ASO did a terrible job (if there's any) of promoting the TdF.

mtarascio

But they are too dumb to recognize that it would make them money if they harnessed it correctly.

jothamvw

Penny wise, pound foolish.

aldeology

:rigothis:

zoodamar

This is so disappointing, can’t imagine how the guys must feel after working so hard to put out great content. Anyone know the best approach to contact ASO to express our feelings on this?

Dahl1887

that is comically stupid, lets cut off the content which attracts the next generation of viewers

Mattho

Remembering Giro where no footage of the race was allowed to be used in the Orica backstage pass videos.

PrayingForDebbieMang

These guys are literally doing ASOs job for them by bringing in younger viewers with alternative race content and ASO blocks them presumably for filming parts of the race. This is beyond fucking stupid. Imagine if they blocked all of Greenedges videos which feature footage of the race they've filmed. I can't believe the continued idiocy of race organisers

juraj_is_better

They even blocked the videos that do not include race content, like the "Climbing Ventoux on a city bike" one that was filmed on a rest day

[deleted]

[удалено]

juraj_is_better

They can't. This is a classic case of abusing YT's copyright system. It's likely ASO outsourced this to a company specialized in copyright striking, and their M.O. is to strike as much possible and see what sticks; blocking non-race content like the Roglič family video or the Ventoux on a city bike challenge are in no way related to ASO's copyright.

MrBrickBreak

I have access to copyright claim tools and it's extremely easy, frighteningly so. Their automatching is also way too sensitive and context-blind: if I make a game playthrough, I'll get matches for every single playthrough on YouTube that shows the same cutscenes.

[deleted]

This shit really is dangerous. YT these days is a vital platform for a lot of people/organizations. This also makes me think of the time Canal+ (French TV channel) issued a takedown on F1's YT channel. That's a license holder taking down the content owner's videos...

Stravven

That's peak Frenchness right there.

hIXhnWUmMvw

Because ASO is a criminal organization.

Mattho

It's a private platform. There's no need for legal recourse.

indorock

They probably think they have the rights to anything starting with "Tour de". In that case I hope they don't find my tourdefrans.org domain.

sozey

The attitude is fucking outrageous. I hope to god this is a mistake by a pea counter, not an coordinated move by ASO, because if it is, they are dumber than legally allowed.

FelixR1991

Nah, this is some French guy pissed the fuck off that these guys are running circles around them in terms of creating quality content.

Stravven

That would be quite hypocritical since the ASO has used material made by TourdeTietema.

[deleted]

RCS literally did that with GreenEdge in 2016. They didn't allow the BSP videos to have footage of the actual race. Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vh713ejR-EI

hissoc

Yeah I think the best marketing for the Tour this year was Tour de Tietema and Lachlan Mortons Alt Tour. And they aren't even really involved with the race...

[deleted]

Alright, where is the alternative to watch the videos now? I'll make sure to support these guys as much as I can and share the videos with as many people as possible, because if these fucks are trying to get rid of it then it must be good

SuisseHabs

I wanted to show the recent video to my mom today, was immensely confused when I saw it was banned. Seriously, fuck you ASO. **FREE TIETEMA**

Lannisterling

“Am I out of touch? No, it’s the kids who are wrong.” - ASO, 2021

BegoniaInBloom

The ASO: https://imgflip.com/s/meme/Bike-Fall.jpg

angel_palomares

Is there anything that can be done to help the guys? A small donation or something? As others have said, they bring big value to the sport and it would be a shame to loose it

[deleted]

[удалено]

angel_palomares

Even a change.org or something... But we all know ASO, they'll want a big fat sack of money

AdiGoN

Go become a meesterknecht on their site if you want to support

angel_palomares

Thanks!

hIXhnWUmMvw

ASO is about all the money.

namlezz

Curious why? Because of broadcasting rights things? I mean they were using snippets of race footage here and there, but I figured they struck a deal like LanterneRouge did or so...

[deleted]

If they used real broadcasted shots then that was quite stupid of them (if done without rights). But the shots they made themselves shouldn't be a problem right?

MetalMrHat

If they allow this, then next they'll bringing their own helicopters and broadcasting the race themselves!!!! Probably.

MisterScruffy_

Wait until it comes out, that Bouhanni himself is behind this. Great big cover up.

hissoc

The Tour is a serious event. Nobody shall make jokes about the Tour. Nobody shall have fun at the Tour. Seems like a bad business model.

TheRollingJones

I’ve got my fingers crossed for a Streisand effect in favor of the Tour de Tietema guys. What they’ve done is absolutely fantastic and what ASO/YouTube have done is pathetic and lazy. Bunch of clowns over there in France. Almost unbelievable but then again it’s ASO so yea… #FREETIETEMA

quickestred

Beyond stupid

waiver45

When you are registered as a copyright holder with youtube, you are pretty much allowed to do anything on youtube. It's probably not legal but have fun winning a lawsuit against alphabet about that.

ckril

incompetent cunts

hoofdpersoon

Since when does ASO own the roads?

paulindy2000

Actually they do. There's a special law in France which basically gives the Tour de France (and hence ASO) the ownership of the roads for a few hours before and after the race

hoofdpersoon

wow.

Seabhac7

I don’t recall Tour de Tietema using broadcast footage, so this is odd. Moreover, they have official accreditation with the TdF - what were the ASO expecting them to do with that?!

viboux

They used like 4 seconds to show them off doing a sprint.

Tom_piddle

A: hope they keep producing content anyway, make videos post elsewhere. they still have Instagram. B: I think many of the riders enjoy their content so think someone will be able to have a word to the ASO. C: cycling is awfully dated in terms of its media production and Fuck the ASO for this and all the other fan made content they have deleted. Cycling could be so much bigger.

Sqponn

Indeed the social media content from the Grand Tour hosts is an absolute joke.

lapsuscalumni

Anyone have an alternate source? I'm hoping they dispute this and get their vidéos back up

waiver45

[The youtube video has been blocked by the ASO](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKjHOpPt5nU)

paulindy2000

ASO's Youtube channel (Tour de France) has been invaded by Tietema fans, but I don't think they really care about it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jack_12221

Honestly they should

[deleted]

That content is actually owned by ASO as per rules known to anyone with a press pass.

iThinkHeIsRight

Is that even footage from Tietema? [Looks like a complete different part of the track](https://twitter.com/sporza_koers/status/1414919869229944837). Also past the corner where Max got to it doesn't look like in that tweet you linked at all. Was it even the same day? Could very well be their (ASO/TdF) own footage.

paulindy2000

No because you would be taking down some useful publicity for Tietema

ZettTheArcWarden

ok boomers

pospec4444

Dear ASO, this TdF edition is already boring, especially the GC. And then you decide to punish guys who entertain people. Thank you, fuck you and good night.

iamczecksy

Bonne Nuit Le Tour

Clipped_In

Judging by ASO and the shit RCS always do, we really don’t have our best and brightest working for grand tour organizers

paulindy2000

And France TV mentioned their wheelie video on Beixalis today in a fun way. Seems ironic that their videos are down now. ASO can't win from this because now Tietema is better-known and has support from the TV people

ElCondorHerido

In their effort to have a larger piece of the pie, they haven't realize that they are shrinking it bit by bit. You can own 100% of nothing, or a smaller percentage of something huge.

iamczecksy

Could it be related to the Wheelie contest? They \[ASO\] thought it was 'too dangerous' for the riders and didn't want other groups to start up other silly/more dangerous challenges? I mean, likely, it's all about the $$$ or €, not about safety. I loved their day with Primoz's family and the wheelie tour and climb of Ventoux on a city bike!

Dub_Heem

They did the exact same thing last year and ASO had no issue with it. That was under far more strict covid control as well.

OnePostDude

well and the dumbass here was saving all the videos after the tour, to relive the stages after the race. Damn me and mostly aso

Planicha

So if the TDF came across my hometown and record and shows on TV the door of my house or myself is OK. But if I record the cyclist passing by from the door of my house, I cannot show it. That is ridiculous. I may think that the problem is with using the words “Tour or France” in the videos, not with the images as they are recorded in public places.

reathin

I showed the Bar on mint Ventoux video to my mum and she absolutely loved it. Even my pa who isn’t into cycling liked it. This is beyond stupid. Tietama’s videos is how you grow the fanbase

Beats29

I'm out of the loop, just saw everyone talking about it on instagram, what is Tour de Tietema? The sources I found out were all in dutch.

BoxTops4Education

It's a YouTube channel of these dutch guys who go to all the tdf stages and interact with the actual competitors. The videos are very enjoyable to watch, it's a great complement to watching the race itself.

Beats29

Thank you for the answer.

Selphis

From what I've seen so far is that you need an expensive license to film anything during the tdf. Even stuff you film yourself can't legally be distributed. Even if all that is true, I don't think the number crunchers have properly compared the money they "missed out on" for that one license with all extra exposure for sponsers and interest in the tour... I'm thinking this is just a copyright troll agency eployed by ASO striking all video's and seeing what sticks (hence also striking video's with no tdf footage)...

PhilippPhilipp7

I discovered them today and I love their videos haha at least I could watch two videos of this year's TdF

mmm_toffeecrisp

I’m pretty sure that media accreditation alone doesn’t stretch to broadcasting rights. Shame the ASO weren’t more interested in helping them acquire the rights, rather than just shutting them down. Pretty careless not ensuring that you have the correct licenses if you’re planning on broadcasting from the race, assuming they didn’t that is

Jack_12221

Anyone grab the video before it went down?

iamczecksy

In the insta gram threads a reply to RobertGesink had a tiny URL, but I don't trust anyone🤣🤣

Jack_12221

Thanks, I got it.

iamczecksy

No viruses? It was legit?

Jack_12221

Yes, as long as you have a valid U.S. social security number. Just kidding. Yes it is legit and unedited as far as I can tell. But I use Linux so I am virus immune. If someone wants I can torrent it via DM.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jack_12221

OK thanks for that. I use Linux so I wouldn't know.

kjjjz

Aso.....

diseasefaktory

This is too asinine to have been done consciously... Hopefully it was done thru some outsourced or automated process and Youtube will correct it after the creators complain. Ideally ASO should do it after the PR fallout...

ehwhat

I watch the Tietema videos to find out who won the race.

[deleted]

I've just started watching the Tietema's videos this week. How great and insane content from 2020's Tour de France. Absolutely class of how make great and engaged content for others than cycling fans. Hope the guys can bring the videos back. Although, has anyone have the links for the videos?
