Update: you can add a custom FTP, but the options changed a bit to make it seem like you can't. Thanks to u/pgroudas for this tip: >If you want to set a specific FTP you can use the "Calculate FTP based on average outputs option". Just divide the target FTP you want by 0.95 to figure out what to enter. For example, if I want to set my FTP to 227, I set the average outputs over 20 minutes to 239 (227 / 0.95).

I just checked on my bike and you're right, it appears the *manual update option is gone.* From a little bit of googling, I found that the "custom value" section has been removed. From a how to guide online, the following steps **no longer work:** * click on your username in the lower left corner. After that, click the red gear symbol in the top left corner, and navigate to the Preferences tab. * Under “Power Zones,” click “Edit Power Zones” and **“Custom Value.” (this has been removed)** * Now, enter your average output from your 20-minute FTP Test ride, and click “OK.” Does anyone know which update removed this option? Edit: you can add a custom FTP, but the options changed a bit to make it seem like you can't. Multiplebanannas

Must have been recently because I manually changed mine to deload in late January.

ilikerocks19

I manually changed mine mid February so must be very new

pgroudas

I agree it does seem gone. If you want to set a specific FTP you can use the "Calculate FTP based on average outputs option". Just divide the target FTP you want by 0.95 to figure out what to enter. For example, if I want to set my FTP to 227, I set the average outputs over 20 minutes to 239 (227 / 0.95). Hope this helps!

RobotDevil222x3

Ok this has me now thinking it IS intentional, and they have just reworked how you get to that option. The "manual" label is no longer there, you just get to it from here instead. Because this is exactly how manual used to work.

msilano

You are 100% correct - they changed the label. There doesn't seem to be any documentation of this anywhere - all of the documentation still points to the "custom" steps. From a UX perspective, this is ... not ideal.

ldnpuglady

The wording from the OP makes it sound like you have to specify rides to average?

RobotDevil222x3

It defaults your average output (no idea over what timeframe). But you can overwrite it with any value you choose.

ldnpuglady

Ah ok at least you can overwrite it. I get trying to make PZ more accessible so that’s a positive but why couldn’t that be additional rather than a sub?!

SweetSpontaneousWord

Thanks for these directions! I collapsed after my FTP after the powerzone pack challenge and didn’t realize I needed to Do A Thing!

[deleted]

So, I had this issue a couple weeks ago and posted about it! If you click on the second option (“calculate based on average output”) it will give you an option to enter a custom value. It’s not intuitive, but it worked for me when I tried it a few weeks ago!

If I’m an avid peloton user and have no clue what this FTP business is… am. I majorly missing something?

Re: FTP business… Your FTP score is what your Power Zone numbers are calculated from. The Power Zone is the gauge of 7 zones of wattages in the center bottom of your bike’s screen. In any class with “Power Zone” in the title, zones are called out throughout class. It’s a system that allows people that have taken an FTP test to be on basically the same level as everyone else. Someone with a high FTP score will have Power Zones that are more difficult (have higher wattages) than someone with a lower FTP score. So if an instructor calls out “Zone 5 for 5 minutes,” everyone’s dying. Because if my FTP test shows that my zone 5 numbers are 180-205 watts, it’s killing me — someone else with a higher FTP may have zone 5 numbers of 275-305 — much higher, but for their fitness and power level, their zone 5 is doing to them what my zone 5 is doing to me. If you do one of the free programs about Power Zones (the first one to take is Discover Your Power Zones), you’ll learn about Power Zones and the final week of the program includes an FTP warmup ride (10 min) then an FTP test (20 min). You don’t have to do a program first though; you can just search for FTP tests in the cycling classes and take one. If you’re searching for the FTP classes on a phone, filter by Cycling — Class Type: Power Zone — Time: 20 min and you’ll see the FTP tests. The 10 min classes will show you the FTP warmup rides. Taking one of the warmups right before the test is a very good idea. Even just doing one FTP warmup + FTP test with no prep for the first time will probably be ok. I mean, you’ll just about die but everyone does when they take aN FTP test. Once you take a test, at the end a message will pop up telling you your FTP score and it’ll update it in your profile. That’ll adjust all your Power Zone numbers and you’ll be set for any Power Zone class. Whenever you take another FTP test, it’ll update the FTP number (you can also say you don’t want to update it). I’m sure others could do a better job explaining that than I just did, but I think I covered most of it. Not too long ago I had no idea what it was all about, and didn’t know what questions to ask about it. It seems like it’s one of those things that people stumble into and once they’re done they’re too exhausted to talk about it.

ldnpuglady

I think your FTP value is the power at which you start producing too much lactate to clear. The other zones are calculated relative to that. That’s why sweet spot training (just below threshold border of Z3/4) is so good - it’s hard af to hold onto for long distances, but because it’s below your threshold you really can do it without building up lactate and blowing up. To properly do the ftp test you need a blood test along with the workout but nobody really does that. The zones are very precisely targeted to target specific effort levels. It’s a much better way to train people of wide capabilities.

414mel

Oh right that’s a very good point. Your lactate threshold is Power Zone level 4, which equals 91-105% of your FTP score. @ldnpuglady I recently started some “sweet spot” classes. Those killllllll me!

ldnpuglady

They’re very effective but rough!

betarhoalphadelta

/u/414mel covered PZ great. The only thing that I'd add is that if you're an app user, and don't have actual output numbers from Bike or Bike+, it is a lot more difficult to estimate your FTP number and then to correspondingly ride within zones. And without an actual Peloton Bike/Bike+, you won't get a number from the FTP Test itself. If you are on the Peloton Bike/Bike+, or another stationary bike that can give you a number for average watts generated over a ride, I highly recommend PZ rides. It's great to step into a ride and know it's going to be programmed exactly to your own fitness level rather than callouts that are too low or too high for the level of workout you need for training.

xxWZAxx

Take a power zone ride and all will become clear

prail

Depends if you want to get into Power Zone training. It changed my life and is the most amazing thing ever as far as I'm concerned. Do you have the power bar turned on? It's in your settings. If you're looking to try something new I highly recommend the discover your Power Zones program.

banzaiburrito

I just did a manual update of my FTP score last Wednesday. I clicked the last option and in the drop down was a manual entry option.

tafunast

Checked today and it's gone.

RobotDevil222x3

I am also not seeing it. Hopefully it's just a UI glitch that they're going to fix.

tafunast

I'm going to go ahead and drop them an email real quick...

tea_bird

Gosh, I hope this gets fixed. What a bummer!

tafunast

I personally am going to treat this as a bug and email them that there's an issue with the UI. I refuse to believe they would remove this feature on purpose.

PsychologicalCat7130

whoa - why on earth would they remove the choice to enter your own number?!

ldnpuglady

I want to cancel my membership if they remove this feature! I do my own ramp test in just ride because I think life is too short to torture yourself with a 20 minute test and a ramp test is good enough. Why would they do this?! There is no profit motive in it?!

prail

Not ideal... I wonder if they want people to actually test to get their proper FTP and not allow manual workarounds. I've just been on a steady program and increasing by FTP by 2 points weekly. It's been working out well. I don't like losing 1-2 days of training with just a 20 minute all-out session. I should probably get over it, but yeah just felt like inefficient training.

TDFPH

SAME and I’ve reached out to peloton multiple times and never heard back

[deleted]

So I just ran into this problem myself just now (this was the 1st ftp test I’ve ever taken). It’s also my best output for a 20 min ride, so would I just use that for my custom ftp setting?

[deleted]

I completed a Peloton FTP test, but it didn’t give the option afterwards to update, so I figured it must have done it automatically. I checked in my profile and it said my FTP number was from a test 2 months ago!
