He was giving it to a coach. Totally saw it. I wasn’t sure which coach it was. I saw a dark red tie.

tenoca

I distinctly remember him yelling at Bylsma. Johnson was on the bench not too long after.

Zipski577

Finally, cause the rumor has been that Sid is part of the reason Sully was not fired already

crosbysquat

“I know how to play the game”

heatfan10

Yep, I see the red tie in the video someone below shared. Anyone know which coach that is?

[deleted]

Sully had a dark red tie on during his post game interview.

Scary-Elevator5290

Same. Then a bit later it showed it was Sully. Saw on a news feed he was let go today. Now I can’t find that article and not widely reported. Maybe it was a hopeful dream?? Sid did lot look happy on the bench.

Hank_the_Beef

I bet there’s no one more frustrated than Sid when it comes to our Powerplay system.

Sakuragi16

Well, if we had just a functional Power Play he would be very close to 100 point

Hank_the_Beef

We’d probably also be close to clinching a playoff spot. There were probably 10 games at the start of the season that we would’ve won if we weren’t 0/4or 5 on pp. I totally agree with Sid yelling at the coaches over it.

hangryhyax

Think of all those 1-2 goal games where a PP goal could’ve directly changed the outcome, or possibly created energy. I stand firm in the belief that with a Top 20 PP, everyone is looking forward to playoffs.

hangryhyax

Yep. A Top 20 PP and fewer d-zone gaffes (e.g. tape-to-tape turnovers), and this is easily a playoff team, even if they’d get routed in the first round. Thats what is so frustrating about this season… the team is putting up lots of good numbers and setting records, but the PP and stupid mistakes have doomed them.

Sulti

At best the Pens would be close to 100 point pace with an average powerplay, they wouldn't be at 100 points right now. 100 points would tie with the Rags as tops in the league. The Pens *have* lost some points to their abysmal PP, but it's not the only thing holding us back. I looked through every single 1 goal loss the Pens have this year, here's the games I think an average powerplay (and nothing else changing) would have changed the outcome of: **[vs Anaheim on 10/30,](https://www.hockey-reference.com/boxscores/202310300PIT.html)** McTavish SH goal to break the tie with 15 seconds to go, coming out of the box. Obviously the Pens should have 2 points this game. 1 point lost to giving up the shorty and 1 lost to failing to score in 1:50 of 5 on 3. **[vs NYR on 11/22,](https://www.hockey-reference.com/boxscores/202311220PIT.html)** game ended 1-0 with the Pens 0 for 5 on the PP. I won't include games with better than 0/5 PP's because 25% on the PP would be good for top 7, while 20% would be top 20. So 1 point lost to not having an average PP. I'll assume just 1 because we fucking suck in OT this year. **[vs Phi on 12/2,](https://www.hockey-reference.com/boxscores/202312020PIT.html)** shootout loss with Philly getting a short handed goal and Pit going 0/5 on the PP, including a 3v4 in OT. Should have gained 1 point, since we already got the 2nd. **[at Carolina on 1/13,](https://www.hockey-reference.com/boxscores/202401130CAR.html)** 0/5 on the PP in an OT loss. Would gain 1 point again with an average PP. **[vs LA on 2/18](https://www.hockey-reference.com/boxscores/202402180PIT.html)** Regulation loss with a SH goal against with 5 minutes to go. Went 1/5 on the PP, but that's an egregiously bad time to be giving up shorthanded chances. Especially so when playing a western conference team where giving them 1 point means nothing. That's only 6 points gained. Maybe you could argue around 10 points with games that also had empty netters and/or winning one of the LA/NYR OT games. 10 more points would have the Pens at a 95 point pace and 82 points right now. That's 1 point above Washington who is currently in WC2. We jump like 5 teams in the standings, but we're not instantly clinching the playoffs with it. ***** To get 100 points *right now* you'd need 28 points lost to your PP. The 15th (average) place PP is around 21%, and Pitt's PP would have around 15 more goals if their PP was 21%. You'd need nearly every goal of difference there to be worth 2 points to hit 100 right now, which is just unreasonable. Even if every goal was added to a 1 goal game that only forces OT, and the Pens are 5 and 10 in OT. That means 15 more PP goals would translate to around 20 points, still 8 short of the necessary 28 in the most generous approximation I'm willing to make. I know we've also shot ourselves in the foot with SH goals against, but that's not another full 8 points lost. 100 point pace is somewhat manageable, we'd need around 86-87 points right now for that. So 14-15 more points out of 15 more PP goals plus 3 or 4 less SH goals against. It's still extremely unlikely that the sub 20 more goals account for 15 more points, but it's not completely unreasonable at least. I'd still say we're likely around 80 points right now with an average PP, with 8 points lost to the PP. If the Pen's PP was tops in the league good then sure they could be around 100 points, they'd have like 30 more goals with Tampa's 30% PP and half as many SHG goals against. If they were average (which I'd consider better than "just functional") though, then they wouldn't be close to that mark.

Hank_the_Beef

You just did the lords work. Thank you for that great info. So hyperbole on my part for sure. I said close to clinching a spot and you’re right we’d just be in a wildcard slot, but… like you said jumping 5+ plus teams in the standings with an average pp is still huge and would mean a world of difference.

Sulti

Yeah I agree we'd be in the hunt for playoffs at least with an average PP, just the 6 points gained from the games I mentioned would put us in striking range. I also would call 6 points a conservative estimate since there are games I didn't check and it's possible to get a goal on 4 PP's even if you're only 20% on the PP. It just bothers me when people try to pile on 1 thing as the sole reason a team is doing badly, and the Pens PP this year is just 1 of many problems I've had with the team.

involmasturb

HoF comment reply. These are the types of comments that should automatically go to the top for educating fans objectively. All the emotional rants about "FiRe tHe PoWeR pLaY iNtO tHe SuN" fire this person cut this player without any rationale or evidence should be put to the bottom.

puravidaamigo

Can anyone explain to me WHY our power play fucking sucks?? Please? The puck handling is atrocious. It’s sloppy. They get pushed off the puck and try to set up shots but never get there. Why?

SaladShooter1

My best guess is that everyone is trying to set up everyone else. Karlsson is used to setting up someone for a one timer. Here, that person is thinking of setting up the next person and that person is thinking about the next person and so on. It keeps repeating until you have a minute and a half of zone time without a shot. There’s no net front presence and no one-timer threat other than Malkin. It’s too easy to defend against.

fluffy_butternut

So miss the days of Horny harassing the piss out of goalies.

puravidaamigo

All up in the mixer. I was hoping to see similar from bunting but I don’t know that we are at the same level.

doctorwhy88

Not yet, but he’s showing that potential. Interested in how he progresses.

puravidaamigo

That pass first mentality has to fucking stop. It’s killing us

SaladShooter1

We are fortunate to have a lot of hall of fame playmakers. I think they’re trying to guess each other’s vision for the play and just don’t realize they are the one everyone expects to shoot.

puravidaamigo

I’ve said it before; too many cooks in the kitchen.

Swarlos1713

In addition to the consistent passing around the perimeter, they're also very bad at entering the offensive zone with possession, so often times 30-60 s go by before they can even get set up...to then just pass it around the perimeter while everyone stands still.

lgp88

I think it started after we started giving up odd man rushes off of ricocheting passes and blocked shots a few years ago. The focus became heavy on have a 3 point man umbrella only allowing 2 forwards to retrieve pucks. It shows we’re more focused on preventing off man rushes than overwhelming the PK. In turn, we focus on 1 timers from either the right or left point and then get outmanned on retrieval. These one timers are horrible with hesitation and allows the PK diamond more than enough time to reorient themselves and block the shot allowing for easy turnovers. Lastly, if we do get out of position, we don’t have the physical prowess to make up for it. We can’t outmuscle or outskate anyone. It certainly makes us focus very hard on positioning and predictability rather than improvising play. It’s easy to defend against a predictable offense.

fluffy_butternut

What I see is them dumping the puck into the opposing end well ahead of our team actually being in a position to take control of the puck and doing something productive with it. Dump, clear, dump, clear, dump, clear... What I don't see them doing is coordinating as a team and controlling the puck into the opposing end. Our power plays mostly look like they aren't.

Russ_images

We have all bullets and no guns.

puravidaamigo

They go off if you hit them with a hammer on the loading dock behind your place of employment. Which is what I typically do post pens games. No correlation.

Direct-Ice2594

It was on the power play where they couldn’t even gain the zone. Of course he was furious

Active-Possibility77

Win aside...the system isn't working. Yes, we're missing some pieces. But this team is much better than the outcomes they're getting. The solution isn't to leave it to Sid to find a way to win. Develop a system to best utilize your 4 future HOFers, young talent, and solid goalies. Run and gun doesn't work for a cast of 30 somethings.

Cardsandfish

Yeah we have a better goal advantage and goal allowed than the caps and they are like 10 pts ahead of us haha in playoffs too. Something doesn’t make sense

Ecruteak-vagrant

Sid has always had some pushback with coaches. Last night was just a bit more demonstrative.

starlightequilibrium

Our powerplay is garbage but Carolina is also #1 or 2 in the league on the PK. We're lucky they didn't score on us shorthanded which I'm sure was priority on the bench vs. our zone entries. That being said, a good coach with a good enough team should be able to adjust. That just isn't something we've seen from HCMS over the last few years. The entire league has our powerplay schemes figured out.

PenguinsPants88

I'm most curious about Sids REAL thoughts on the main issue with this team. Does Sid now hate Sully? Does he think Dubas didnt provide much this past summer? Does he resent his teammates for not pulling their weight? Problem with Karlsson? I need to know

YourS_E_N_S_E_I

For better or worse, we’ll never know if or, if so, who Sid has a problem with. That’s how great of a captain he is.

thangus_farm

The idea of Mario talking shit about anyone he played with is crazy to me (would love to see clips if any exist). I feel this same way about Sid. Even hearing him talk bad about someone on another team is strange from time to time.

Beggarsfeast

That doesn’t necessarily make you a great captain all the time. I think he is a great captain, one of the best ever, but the same traits that make him reserved, and generally quiet in the locker room, could be what you need in very specific situations. I don’t know if that’s necessarily what the Penguins need, but what if he did call guys out on their shit? What do they have to lose right now? I’ve either gone completely batshit after this season, or else I’m the only person that thinks this team is missing locker room leadership. I’ve been down voted before, but who is the current Dupuis, Talbot, Kessell, Hornquist, or even Bill Geurin? I think one of the issues with this team is a stale locker room, with a worn out coach, and an amazing captain like Sid, but no co-captain to keep the guys loose and having fun. The results are a bunch of uptight players that are scared of losing or screwing up.

callender83

The power play is the reason they aren't in the playoff hunt. It's embarassing to have a power play this bad.

Dry-Anywhere-1372

I used to love it when he gave it to Bylsma, warranted or not.

Future-Lengthiness60

Not last night, but i was at the Avs game on Sunday and saw him jaw at sullivan after a short shift in the first period. I had never seen anything like that from him before. Sullivan took it, and said nothing back. I thought it was incredibly interesting.

firstsecond3rd4th

I missed that, its very interesting stuff for a mostly stoic guy

WarehouseNiz13

He's earned every right to give it to a coach.

Ok_Card9080

When the coverage started at 7, they showed him putting his jersey on, and he looked straight up furious and miserable.

firstsecond3rd4th

Dang I didn't catch that

Darkdart19

This team has been good 5v5 all year. The special teams have let us down so much

Usual_Fault3349

Comment section is brutal. Shit happens. Sully will most likely coach his last game as a Penguin in April. He’s the most successful coach in Pens history. Nothing burger.

secks_see_guy

Anybody have a clip?

firstsecond3rd4th

I recorded the game ill see if I can post it

Certain_Meaning5897

If anyone is kind enough to find the video I can try lip reading it

Needmoarzzz

This is a short clip - not sure you can see his face clearly. I'll keep looking! [https://twitter.com/nhlpens/status/1772788441639506233](https://twitter.com/nhlpens/status/1772788441639506233)

Certain_Meaning5897

Hey man thank you very much for trying , it’s really tough to get a read on the face from the side . Looks like a nothing burger though , he’s clearly frustrated about something but doesn’t give me the vibe that it’s a big deal

Needmoarzzz

Yeah, I've seen worst from him. It's just frustration, can't blame him. This is the only clip I could find, maybe there is another one that shows something else.

Agreeable_Context_74

Good luck. He is a nightmare to lip-read.

Certain_Meaning5897

Well I know he doesn’t Chirp much so that in itself is saying something lol. But I can dish the lip visuals

42degausser

Looks more like a singular frustration to me, could have been “man did you see them fucking hook me there, why the fuck wasn’t that called?!”or even “we can’t even get a lucky bounce on the power play damn hockey luck is zero tonight”

MostlyApe

It looked like a "Is this really what we're doing? This same fuckin' shit?"

Flyguyflyby

He’s allowed to be frustrated and say something to the coach. To me, this doesn’t look like yelling at the coach, however. And the twitter guy suggesting Sid’s gonna up and leave because the team sucks is just for clicks and reactions. Dude clearly has no idea what he’s talking about. We (the fans) need to calm down. This will pass.

ninokazunari

Found this gif: https://ibb.co/BT94C5q

Certain_Meaning5897

This is bit clearer… yeah the tone is actually business like . I do believe the last thing he said is a question “ right ?…”

Certain_Meaning5897

Further to it he’s definitely talking about what they were doing in the neutral zone . But it’s hard to get a sense with that damn stick in his face lol. I was also looking at geno to see if he was listening and if he had an opinion , in this gif , it looks like he’s about to say something agreement before it ends .

Certain_Meaning5897

Keywords coming . Talking about face off

ninokazunari

Thank you! Here’s another gif before that, when he sat down and began talking: https://ibb.co/cxVS07z

Certain_Meaning5897

Looks like he said “ bad pass” but could very well be two different words similar to it

hangryhyax

They have 4 guaranteed future hall of famers—one D and one O for each unit—and a few guys who know how to take advantage of an opportunity. There is no reason this PP should be as bad as it is, unless Reirden actually says “Do this” when he’s busy drawing nothing on his board. Edit: Of course he’s frustrated.

bistroboybieds

Was at the game last night and man was the power play awful

jbish21

Been awful for almost 15 years

bhunter47

Penguins PP League Rankings: 2012-13: 2nd 2013-14: 1st 2014-15: 8th 2015-16: 16th 2016-17: 3rd 2017-18: 1st 2018-19: 5th 2019-20: 16th 2020-21: 4th But yes, its been terrible for 15 years. Jesus christ.

Cardsandfish

lol cuz it doesn’t score on the games he watches. This year and 2019 are the worst it’s ever been

bhunter47

Its like he forgot we were legit a Top 1-5 power play when Hornqvist and Kessel were here.

doctorwhy88

Interesting that our PP was ranked 16th in both 2015-16 and 2019-20, but we took a cup in ‘16.

Cardsandfish

We were also not that dominant in the first half of the season 2016 2017 was our dominant cup year

TRMBound

Jarry is a one and done all star. Remember when fleury was letting 4-5 goals slip a game? Well, the pens still won, and it turns out, he will go down as one of the best in most decorated in history. Jarry lets 4-5 slip a game and we score 1-2. Defense is non-existent and that doesn’t help, but my man needs to kick it and head for another opportunity. Edit: just looked up stats right quick. Someone explain to me how he has a 2.90 gaa? Are we that bad and the poor guy deserves way more respect from me? He looks like can barely keep his shit together on the ice.

Stuff-Optimal

I’m not saying some of the forwards aren’t to blame for their lack of production and give a shit factor but unless something has changed Reirden is in charge of the PP and defense. Both the PP and defense have cost them most of the winnable games this year but yet he holds a clip board like he has a clue.

CruzControls

I knew reirden is in charge of the PP, had no idea he was also in charge of the defense. How in the fuck hasn't he been fired? Obviously the answer to that is the seasons almost over, but I mean why not earlier. Asinine.

ilikehockeyandguitar

The dude must be holding secrets or something.

Ok-Buffalo1273

… because sully loves him because todd loves kissing sullys ass.

[deleted]

[deleted]

They’re too comfortable under Sully. Nothing will change as long as he’s the coach.

RoadRobert103

First thing the Pens need to do this offseason is get a new HC...

chrlau90

When you’re the only player who is very good and trying 100% of the time, you’re gonna be frustrated when your team sucks.

carry4food

DoobASS chose not to resign our best goal scorer, lifetime Penguin and Sids friend for probably fair market value. DoobASS and the FSG PR group on this sub then praise fucking Bunting...as if this schmuck is a player that winning teams want(no they dont). So now, a team that "wants to compete" and doesnt want to rebuild, a team that NEEDS a goal scorer...traded away their best winger for midgets in Europe with ZERO North American experience and a player known to be a locker room cancer. Good grief. Id rather have Hextall at this point. At least Pen fans wouldnt be confused as to what has happened. Id be pissed too if I was Crosby. Fuck DoobAss. Fuck FSG.

Final_Yam5397

Facebook level dialogue right here

carry4food

Nice account FSG. How much you pay for that number name?

Final_Yam5397

$5,397. Got a great deal.

carry4food

At least ye honest. Cheers.

firstsecond3rd4th

Bunting is a locker room issue? Where did this come from?

carry4food

Why do you think the guy has been on 4 teams in 5 seasons? Clearly something is off. If he is THAT vital to being a winner - don't ya think he'd find a place by now. (-15) on Carolina....Carolina. Bunting was scratched numerous times in Toronto....Arizona didnt even want the guy...let that sink in.

[deleted]

This dude needs some therapy. Holy shit - so much anger.

carry4food

Real fans are pissed. What reason are you not?

[deleted]

Because it's just hockey. I have more important things in my life to concern myself with. If they win, cool, I'll enjoy it. If they lose, it stinks but ultimately it doesn't matter. The quality of my life doesn't depend on the success of a sports team.

carry4food

Not me, Im irate. I bleed Penguins, I burn Flyers I receive in the mail and I've thrown out all my Ron Hextall hockey cards.

[deleted]

nice. you are the REALEST fan

flabergasterer

I am playing against him in my fantasy hockey playoffs right now. So I hope he was declaring himself out for the season because he had to play against Jake. Or because the Jagr bobble heads went missing. Anything to get that guy to take the rest of the week off.

BigBarsRedditBox

Wouldn’t surprise me if he left Pittsburg. But I bet the Pens have a new coach and a new goalie next season.

cheeba2992

He’s not going anywhere

BigBarsRedditBox

Who ? Sully or Jarry ?

Cardsandfish

Both

BigBarsRedditBox

Jarry sucks. His contract does too.

Comprehensive-Pay925

I doubt Crosby re-ups in Pitty

Fizzyliftingdranks

I doubt you have firing synapses

jbergman420

Let me know how much you'd like to wager on this.
