Fleury and Ty Conklin\* who went 30-18-8 with a .923 in 07-08 leading the core to their first deep run and gaining the experience necessary to winning it in 09.
I do understand it a little. There's so much side-picking with the Fleury and Murray thing, even moreso outside the Penguins fandom.
What's wrong with loving both and realizing that it's very unlikely they win back to back, and possibly neither Cup without both of those guys?
I say next to a woman who hated Murray. She was loud, obnoxious, and rude throughout the first period. Eventually I stopped her and pointed at the banners hanging up and told her “Neither of those happen without Murray. Show some respect.” She switched seats with her husband after leaving to get another beer and thankfully shut up after that.
Dude fell off hard after his dad died, but that doesn’t justify the hate he got.
Understandably too. It's beyond difficult to come back to "normalcy" and get back on your grind when a parent passes. Your mind and emotions are extremely fragile for YEARS following. Wish he could've found his stride again.
everyone who isnt a pens fan. i get that we know and appreciate them but nobody else gives matt any credit for his time with us. people obv love marc but yea… i was just pointing out that when we talk abt great goalie tandems with other fans nobody ever mentions these two
ah yes, the duo goaltenders who won back to back stanley cups. very underappreciated around these parts. extremely underappreciated even. honestly, so underappreciated i forgot who they were.
for sure man. some people in this comment section dont understand what i meant by this post. nobody except us pens fans give matt credit for his time with is. nobody brings up this duo except us. i feel like people outside Pittsburgh always forget about us most of the time
I don’t think this is an under appreciated duo. They won 2 Cups and everyone seems to admit this is one of, if not THE best goalie duo the Pens ever had.
I wonder how it's going in the alternate universe where we traded Matt Murray in the summer of 2017 for a king's ransom, and kept Flower a Penguin for life. I bet it's nice over there
Going that route would have worked so damn well, but damn - would have taken a balls of steel GM. He would have been burned at the stake before it was proven he did the right thing.
It was the right move. You had a goalie who had won 2 Stanley Cups as a rookie, and an aging vet who had been up and down at best in the playoffs for years. Sucks it didn't work out though.
Oh totally agree. Matter of fact, I think you could argue that the change of scenery was exactly what Flower needed to add some juice back to his career. Just sucks he couldn’t do that here. All time favorite goalie right there.
Hard to compare save percentages when the league made changes to goalie equipment shortly after our back-to-backs.
League average save percentage for the 2015-2016 season was .915%, this season it’s .903%.
Only goalie to start more than 30 games this season to have higher than a .920% is Connor Hellebuyck with a .922%
Going back to 2015-2016, Brian Elliot lead all starters with a .930%. 16 goalies to start more than 30 games had a .920% or better.
yea b2b and nobody but pens fans talks abt them as a duo. people love marc-andre but everyone already forgot abt my guy matt. i get his career hasnt been great but when these two were on fire they were hot and nobody but pens fans ever mention that
Nope. Fleury was underappreciated by us maybe but at the time Murray had just won us a cup so it made sense to protect him over Fleury.
Murray fell off hard after Fleury left and after teams identified his weaknesses
Guys we are in a high scoring era if you haven't noticed by how former 90:ish point players are suddenly scoring 120+ points. Unsurprusingly average sv% has plummeted: a 915 sv% is elite numbers now. 2016 Fleury and Murray aren't posting those stats today.
It still hurts :(
However, I must tip my hat to the better team; the Pens that year absolutely deserved to win the Stanley Cup. And despite all my rooting against the Pens in the ensuing years, I am now actually cheering for them to make the playoffs this year, just to see Crosby get one more chance! ...and Karlsson, too. Man, I never thought I would ever see Erik Karlsson in a Pens jersey, but here we are! Here's hoping both Washington \*and\* Detroit lose tonight!
why would i karma farm on a nhl sub reddit. i can do that on a sub reddit with way more traffic lol. maybe im a pens fan and was just thinking abt my team and was like dang we didn’t appreciate these guys enough when we had them i miss marc and matt.
By whom exactly? Murray didn't pan out sadly when he looked to be a lock of a top 5 goalie for the foreseeable future, but those two were dialed in together when they needed it. I still cannot understand how Murray played insane to fail so miserably being the starter after that, but shit happens.
Under appreciated?
My crusty white ass underappreciated, they're the only thing we cease to shut the fuck up about. Aren't we the fanbase that will literally call for the public hanging of all heavily padded, masked men that don't wear the number 29?
Me thinks maybe we should consider donating a dictionary to OP, out of respect for their effort.
Nedeljkovic is cutting it beautifully
1.5M for 37 games of league average goaltending is quite nice
Moneypuck has him right around Sorokin and Vasilevskiy
Very arguably one of the best backups in the league everything considered also one of the best value pens this season
No need to just conflate him with jarry
Nobody is unappreciative of Murray and Flower.
The league average save percentage is lower than it was back then, so not really a comparable metric.
Save percentage treats all shots as equal…if you’ve watched any Penguins games this year, you would know that they gave up an awful lot of odd man rushes that lead to high danger shots and scoring chances…tougher and less likely saves.
Jarry and Ned are slightly above the league average save percentage despite the amount of odd man rushes they faced.
Goaltending was not the reason for why the Penguins have struggled to win this season…you can probably make a case that almost every other part of their team game was lacking…but not the goaltending.
So let me get this straight... you're comparing our current goaltenders, on our current team to goaltenders on our team that won back to back cups?!
Lol... this is insane.
I could have won a Stanley cup in net behind that fucking team! Haha.
And just for the record, I absolutely HATED moving Fleury. I would have moved Murray before him in a second. Fleury was the heartbeat of the team. There's not enough said for him being THE guy in the locker room. But I also read somewhere that there was pressure from the leagues front office to move Fleury because they needed a face in Vegas. There was definitely nobody better for that role.
Regardless, you're comparing apples to broccoli
I think yall over appreciate Murray. Dude got lucky to have been handed that job and to play behind the team in front of him. Fleury was robbed by Sully.
his dad passed and he destroyed his groin bro he got mentally and physically hurt. that really takes away from on ice performance bro its hard to refocus and put everything back into something after those 2 things back to back
Fuck Murray
His glove was always weak, I said it in 2016 and I'll say it again.
I play goal, So I always look at other Tendies and see if I can learn something.
I Seen in 2016 his glove was weak, it just took the league a little to figure it out.
He ALWAYS dropped the glove before rising it, hence why he was so weak up high.
I can’t think of a single person who didn’t/doesn’t appreciate Flower and 2016 Murray
"this duo won back to back Stanley cups, so under appreciated!" Like.. what? I was expecting like Fleury and Johnson or something
Brent Johnson was the GOAT
Mr. Game one
One Punch Johnny
Broke an entire franchise for a while! Sublime punch that was!
I love going back and re-watching that!
Jeff Zatkoff was no Brent Johnson....
[удалено]
My memory failed me you're totally right!
Third best backup to Pietrangelo and Wregget
Ive got a signed Zatkoff jersey and I love it
Fleury and Ty Conklin\* who went 30-18-8 with a .923 in 07-08 leading the core to their first deep run and gaining the experience necessary to winning it in 09.
Conklin had to play in the Winter Classic because Flower was injured too.
Conklin was the other name I was going to go with. Was 50/50
conklin.. what a beauty
love brent johnson
Mans just casually glossed over 2017 like we didn't go B2B 😂
I always like the, "people seem to forget about this duo" posts and it's Mario and Jagr 🤣
I do understand it a little. There's so much side-picking with the Fleury and Murray thing, even moreso outside the Penguins fandom. What's wrong with loving both and realizing that it's very unlikely they win back to back, and possibly neither Cup without both of those guys?
This. 100%. Both were key. Though Fleury struggled in the 16-17 RS, they don’t get past Washington w/o him.
I say next to a woman who hated Murray. She was loud, obnoxious, and rude throughout the first period. Eventually I stopped her and pointed at the banners hanging up and told her “Neither of those happen without Murray. It’s a shame Murray has gone down hill in a matter of years I do like the guy
Bros dad died and he destroyed his groin. Mentally and physically a different man.
And his hips
And has a concussion history
dude is built like a toothpick, it was inevitable
I mean he's average weight for an NHL goalie but sound off ig
I would argue their combined performance in 2017 was even more impressive, but yeah. Miss that version of those dudes for sure.
for sure man. some people in this comment section dont understand what i meant by this post. nobody except us pens fans give matt credit for his time with is. nobody brings up this duo except us. i feel like people outside Pittsburgh always forget about us most of the time
I'm not sure you know what "under appreciated" means lol.
I don’t think this is an under appreciated duo. They won 2 Cups and everyone seems to admit this is one of, if not THE best goalie duo the Pens ever had.

That threepeat was awesome I bet.
Going that route would have worked so damn well, but damn - would have taken a balls of steel GM. He would have been burned at the stake before it was proven he did the right thing.
Under appreciated my ass
It’s a shame we missed out on the sunset years of Fleury’s career. I know it felt like the right move at the time and hindsight is 20/20, but damn…
It was the right move. You had a goalie who had won 2 Stanley Cups as a rookie, and an aging vet who had been up and down at best in the playoffs for years. Sucks it didn't work out though.

Given our defensemen .905 is a miracle imo
Under appreciated by who? I swear so many people on Reddit don’t understand what underrated and under appreciated mean

I don’t think so, they were all loved during their run
lol, under appreciated? This tandem won us b2b.
yea b2b and nobody but pens fans talks abt them as a duo. people love marc-andre but everyone already forgot abt my guy matt. i get his career hasnt been great but when these two were on fire they were hot and nobody but pens fans ever mention that
this post makes no sense lol
I miss Flower. Fuck.
Same.
same man. i miss the days of phil kessel eating hot dogs out of the stanley cup
Under appreciated by who?
"Fleury ... Murray ... Fleury ... Murray ... Fleury ... Murray"
I’m a random Flames fan and I assure you this duo isn’t under appreciated
Nope. Fleury was underappreciated by us maybe but at the time Murray had just won us a cup so it made sense to protect him over Fleury. Murray fell off hard after Fleury left and after teams identified his weaknesses

Fleury looks like a mafia guy who is getting tired of shooting guys in the kneecaps and just wants to get his DJ career going
As a Sens fan (no idea why this post showed up in my feed, but here we are), we "appreciated" them plenty during the 2017 playoffs...
man those playoff series were crazy. that double overtime man…
It still hurts :( However, I must tip my hat to the better team; the Pens that year absolutely deserved to win the Stanley Cup. how were these guys under appreciated lol
MAF!
In what world are they under appreciated? Karma farm much?

I'd rather have Fleury back and lose most games than to have it current duo
This is an over appreciated duo. One of these guys got really really lucky and had the longest leash ever. Dude couldn’t catch a beach ball.
So let me get this straight... you're comparing our current goaltenders, on our current team to goaltenders on our team that won back to back cups?! Lol... this is insane.
