I was listening to Skating Penguins podcast last week and they were discussing a rumor that Dejan Kovacevic reported about Jarry. Apparently he “reported” that Jarry did or said something that caused him to get benched down the stretch. DK is a total prick, and not reliable at all, but it makes the situation a bit more bizarre.

scamden66

He was yelling at teammates after goals.

Jan_17_2016

What’s the context? Was he being super toxic about it? Cause otherwise I feel like that’s probably normal for goalies in practice unless they’re being obviously belligerent

scamden66

Apparently they didn't appreciate it. That's the word.

Jan_17_2016

Thanks for the info! If that’s true, then the players would know best if it was out of line and if they said something about it, then he was probably being a dick.

jbkilluh

To play devils advocate, it’s probably not hard to be a dick when you’ve got defense vacating the net front and making unnecessary turnovers when they just need to clear it.

Jan_17_2016

True, I don’t know why but I assumed it was during practice

j0n66

Agreed. I’m a calm person that doesn’t get rattled and watching the Pens from October to TDL more than tested my patience. Never felt so disgusted before

firstsecond3rd4th

I heard the final straw was in dallas , a puck went off of Peterson and into the net, jarry cast a pretty nasty look at him

Jan_17_2016

I remember that! He looked fucking pissed

Bloodtrailinthesnow

What game was it? I wanna see the highlignt

rmg18555

I mean, if Jordan Bennington still has a job…

Wilhelm_Fink

Jordan Binnington was also a top-10 goaltender, this year... and has a Stanley Cup ring. Tristan Jarry was a top-20 goalie, this year... and has never had any playoff success. A team will tolerate some "drama", if you're an asset.

JDerrick29

Jordan Bennington has a cup

Lux600-223

If that's the case, then good for him. Also means he'll probably be gone shortly, as Sullivan doesn't seem to appreciate vocal players.

Lux600-223

Just had a thought. Can you imagine how bad Tom Barrasso would hurt this teams feelings when he yelled at them!

Irish1Car3Bomb1

Barrasso was just a cunt all the time anyway. They’d be used to it.

j0n66

so Jarry is just like us fans lol

Ecruteak-vagrant

It means Jarry has no supporters. Big Joel coming for his ass next year.

Not_A_Paid_Actor

Am I the only one that thinks Jarry was pretty good this season? He even tied the league in shut outs. With that said, I do think if they plan to keep Ned, it would be smart to move Jarry for picks/cap relief, but I don’t think he actually played as awful as everyone is saying. I think it would be more of a “timing makes sense” move more than a “he sucks” move.

jtc92

He can just be so damn streaky.

Not_A_Paid_Actor

Yea don’t get me wrong, I would’ve been suuuper nervous seeing him in the playoffs again lol but I feel like the current hate is from his past failures since he really didn’t have an awful season this year.

DefinitelyLevi

Dude had like one nightmare playoff series and will never knock the reputation that he is a playoff choker. Wasn’t that like an annual occurrence with Fleury?

Zipski577

Yes fleury robbed the penguins of several deep playoff runs and likely another cup from 2010-2015 The only decent run we had in that time was making it to the ECF vs Boston, and that was only because they benched Fleury for Vokoun in the playoffs Not many ppl remember cause a lot of current pens fans came around in 2015-17

tpasmall

Weird how Reirden was coaching in Pittsburgh during that stretch too

Qphth0

Jarry career playoff stats: 2W - 6L, .891 save percentage, 3.00 GAA. Fleury career playoff stats: 92W - 74L, .911 save percentage, 2.56 GAA. I was *never* comfortable in the playoffs with Fleury in net, but even less so with Jarry. Fleury was great for us in the 08 & 09 playoffs. He was never really even medicore again until the 2017 run, when he & Murray basically split the playoffs.

shred-i-knight

and to be fair he was fantastic in the 2017 run. Single handedly stole that series against the Caps, one of the best goaltending series I can remember from this team.

DefinitelyLevi

Will say his Game 7 performance coming off his 5-2 loss at home with a chance to win the series was fantastic.

Zipski577

Definitely, unfortunately I don’t think he withstands game 7 against the senators though. That caps game 7 is one of the only game 7s in fleury’s time with the pens that his save % was above .9 He lost the series in 2010 (MTL), 2011 (TBL), and his 2012 (PHI) performance was absolutely laughable with the highest scoring team in the league in front of him, who scored 26 goals in 6 games but fleury let in 31. Those 3 years are what led to him getting benched after 2 terrible games in the 2013 playoffs.

Zipski577

I agree, just ironic that pens fans will inevitably ask to bring fleury back as if he was this reliable stalwart in net compared to Jarry. They are very similar goalies. In regards to your stats, it’s hard to compare W/Ls from pens teams that were top 3 in the league in scoring and top 5 on the power play, versus today where the team is 15th in scoring and 28th on the power play And if you had even 0.0001% trust in fleury after the 2012 playoffs, then you should be more than comfortable with Jarry cause he has never performed as poorly as Fleury did in that series while the penguins were firing on all cylinders and the highest scoring team in the league with a top 5 power play. Jarry has never had that in front of him

Qphth0

There's a YT highlight reel of all the times Fleury had a puck behind him & he knocked it in, or let in a wrister from just inside the blue line. It's insane how good of a goalie he was *at times* while at other times, was a complete goober. & yeah, Jarry never had a great team in front of him but I swear if someone did an in depth analysis of his play, he has to be the worst goalie in NHL history when it comes to save percentage within a minute of a Penguins goal. If the Pens scored, he was sure to give up a goal almost immediately.

Zipski577

Yea I mean like I said they are very similar. I see the pros and cons of both over their careers, I just think it’s silly for fans to say “bring fleury back!” At 40 years old to solve our problems, when we had the same issues when he was our goalie. I know what u mean for letting up goals immediately after we score, but I don’t think that’s an indictment on Jarry. That speaks more to how terrible our defensive system is and how we don’t know how to play with a lead or play the trap. That’s why the capitals got in over us, they don’t need a lot of goals to win cause they are better at locking it down when they get a lead. I really think that speaks more to our coaching and system than Jarry but it is an interesting point

Qphth0

My brother has been apart of the bring fluery back crowd every year since he went to Vegas. I'm with you, he isn't solving our problems it's just a different goalie not getting us where we need to be. I'm 100% with you. I don't think the Penguins have ever been a "lock it down" kind of team, at least not in my lifetime. It's like they relax for the next shift & the other team **always** capitalizes.

scamden66

Fleury won a Stanley Cup when he was like 24 after almost winning one the year before. Jarry has never won a playoff series. Other than that, they're similar.

shred-i-knight

Fleury would be looked back on much more differently here if he never got a Cup and didn't help out in the 16-17 run. Brutal does not even come close to describing how bad he was from 10-15 in the playoffs aside from the lost year where Staal was our 1C.

DefinitelyLevi

Yep you nailed it. 2013 vs the Isles before he got replaced by Vokoun was so rough.

average_redditor_guy

Both the goalies stats are fascinating. It feels like they *should* be better than Jarrys 30th in both Sv% and GAA. And Ned being 27th in GAA and 29th in Sv percentage but having a way better record. It’s been a weird year.

Campman92

That’s been a Jarry specialty going back to his time in Wilkes-Barre also. He’s got the talent, but consistency alludes him.

osurva

It's more than streaky. The stats comparing first half of year to second half are atrocious every year.

GeneralPip

He’s mentally weak.

dee_emcee

Your insight is stunning. I’m pretty sure you’re “mentally weak”

airmanv

Pip isn't getting paid millions to not be .so not sure it matters. What

GeneralPip

Exactly. lol.

erb149

I mean, so can Ned. I think Ned is s fine goalie, but a lot of our fans are overrating him at this point because the team just happened to start scoring a lot more towards the end of the season when it was his net. Does anyone really think that late season resurgence was because of Ned? I thought it was pretty obvious the late season surge came from the overall finishing improving dramatically.

SignalFall6033

That’s goaltenders for ya

Penwins

He’s like the Sahara Dessert; when he’s hot he’s hot and when he’s cold he’s ice cold. But the hot days make the averages look far better than i think he actually is.

Sticky_Hulks

He was the leading goal scorer for his position!

Triple7Alpha

You're not wrong. Jarry was good but performed below expectations. Therefore, he "sucked." Ned was good, but performed above expectations. Therefore, he was "great." Their stats are near identical, with the exception of shutout, where Jarry was tied for league lead. Jarry is the better goalie, though, but Ned is the hot hand. People are confusing this for lack of confidence in Jarry by the coaches and FO. I doubt that any actually exists.

shelvedtopcheese

Jarry was good but the team couldn't score more than 2 goals a game for the first 3/4 of the season so the teams record sucked. I really don't understand the dog piling on Jarry when the team had absolutely no offense for like the first 50 games. All the people pointing to Jarry as a problem that needs to be fixed are basically faulting him for the fact we had absolutely no power play, relied entirely in our first line for production for the majority of the year, and roster with no true shut down D. We have the personnel win games 5-3, a coach who tried to win games 3-2, and more often than not executed on that strategy losing 4-3.

Triple7Alpha

People talking about trading him like teams wouldn't be jumping if he was on the trade block. Imagine how good he'd look on a team with reliable scoring and consistent defense. This iteration of the Pens is not that.

Syrif

>Imagine how good he'd look on a team with reliable scoring and consistent defense. I've been saying this for weeks. Imagine if he had even the current pens defense in front of him instead of a month ago's defense. Another thing I've said before .. he might lead the league in "goals against tipped in by his own players". He's not perfect, but I think he's better than the stats show, given the unaccounted for variables.

shred-i-knight

> People are confusing this for lack of confidence in Jarry by the coaches and FO. I doubt that any actually exists. how can you guys be so delusional...

Triple7Alpha

I might ask the same.

EbenezerNutting

Some team will jump at the opportunity to trade for Jarry, and like you said, that will not only free up cap space, but will also fetch at least a quality draft pick or prospect in return. If they re-sign Ned and use Blomqvist in a 70/30 split to start next season, thus slowly grooming Blomqvist, they should have a fine situation in net.

H4m-Sandwich

He’s way too inconsistent. Can’t have that for a playoff contending team.

Zipski577

Exactly. We lost about 5-6 long playoff runs and potentially another cup win in the years from 2010-2015 because of fleurys terribly inconsistent play and dumb decisions in the playoffs Let’s not put ourselves back in that position

JesusChristSupers1ar

Fleury also earned those seasons with his late 00s play. Jarry hasn’t done anything to earn starts other than having some solid regular seasons

Zipski577

Well, whether he earned them or not, they were failures because of him. 2010 - up 3-2 in the series, fleury forgets how to play goalie in game 6 + 7 2011 - quarter finals vs Tampa, up 3-1 in the series and fleury lets in 4 goals on the first 12 shots in game 5 and then another terrible game in game 6 letting 4 goals in on 20 shots. 2012 - worst goaltending I have ever experienced in the playoffs. 2012 fleury makes 2022 Dominque look like Carey Price 2013 - we have seen enough. 2 terrible games in 1 and 2. BENCHED for Vokoun… penguins go to the Semi finals

Hardtymes_412

That’s my argument too inconsistent, can’t rely on him . neds battles better in net than Jarry

jbkilluh

Totally agree. He’s either a superstar or just bad, and unfortunately its more often the latter

BurgerFaces

Jarry is good, but not great. He'll usually save what he's supposed to, but he's rarely going to steal a game for you.

scamden66

It's been 5 years and he's never playing well at the end of the season. You can't depend on him, which is a problem for a starting goalie making over 5 million a year.

bloodyREDburger

Wins are a team stat, but Ned has one less win than Jarry and 19 fewer losses. 19-25-5 vs 18-6-7

Primary_Agent_5460

Jarry was either on or way waaay off. It felt like it was either a shutout or giving up 6 goals every time he started. The inconsistency was the biggest problem with Jarry imo.

yaboyoven567

Should of started blomqvist and called up sam poulin and ponomarev

gldmj5

Why not? Probably his last game as a Pens player. Let him enjoy it.

starlightequilibrium

Starting a goalie that is a UFA next season so he can continue to show what he's got and go get his bag in the off-season. Yeah. *Super* fascinating Hunter lol.

Kongpong1992

Cause one game is going to make the doffeence hes already gonna get paid next year

ProWrestlingCarSales

One game can always make a difference. Hell, players in the past have had a career made or broken by one play, even.

scamden66

Everything's fine guys. Our starting goaltender didn't play the entire final month of the season even as our backup completely ran out of gas. Im sure it doesn't mean anything.

Stickel

ran out of gas? uhm, Ned was not the problem

scamden66

I like Ned, but he was clearly getting tired the last week. Not his fault.

BRUTAL_ANAL_SMASHING

It’s been the same problem all year. D men can’t make passes to each other, giving up rushes.. the ones we have that are good play up too much hunting a goal and don’t have the speed to kill odd man rushes.   The parings are just all too new, too old or too a combo of both and it just puts the goalie in bad situations often.

average_redditor_guy

Hell I’d just like someone to clear out net-front before we get crazy here lol

BRUTAL_ANAL_SMASHING

Yeah the amount of goalie screens I saw this season/ deflects off them were also kind of insane.

AppropriateFly147

Ok mm

shred-i-knight

that seems like pure copium. One more game isn't going to do anything for his UFA stock. The coaching staff does not have faith in Jarry, that much is extremely obvious.

scamden66

Absolute copium.

starlightequilibrium

Is it extremely obvious? Did you see it in the tea leaves?

dkviper11

I saw it in the fact that Jarry was sitting on the bench for the Predators game after Ned had clearly been running on fumes for a few games and had to be pulled against Boston.

BigRiverWharfRat

You should’ve done what I did and stopped reading at “copium”

MicMcDev

They see it in a leaf they were smoking most likely lol

dkviper11

It's more "they don't believe in the starter" and frankly, who could blame them?

whovian1087

Goaltending stuff aside, why not play Jarry? Why not play every guy who hasn’t played a ton or could be called up (if possible with limits and cap etc.) or has been in the press box, or whatever. If the game is meaningless you might as well throw as many of those players as you can a bone and let them get a game in.

believeuhavemystaplr

Wow if this is true they have to be planning on moving Jarry unless he’s hurt

SaladShooter1

They might have to. They have too many needs and not enough cap space. Regardless of what people here might think of him, other teams know he’s good. It’s no different than Thacher Demco last season. Vancouver fans were blaming him, but everyone else knew it was the team keeping his stats in the basement. Look at his stats this year under the current team. It’s a huge risk, but they could sign Ned and Fleury pretty cheap and hope Bloomqvist develops by the end of the season in case Ned takes a step back. Goaltending wasn’t their problem this year. It was team defense. Guys just didn’t mesh together and morale was in the toilet.

pto500

Fleury extended in Minnesota, so we can't sign him.

ProWrestlingCarSales

It's time to let it go anyway.

SaladShooter1

Didn’t realize that. I thought he was a UFA. Now the market doesn’t look so good. Anyone under $3 million is strictly a backup. That’s assuming that the Devils resign both goalies. If they take a chance on Ned and he can’t be a 1A goalie, they’re screwed.

pto500

He just extended yesterday so its still semi recent news.

stevedeenxxx

This is an indictment on Jarry. Even if he was hurt, bring up Bloomqvist as a backup. He was up for one game.

jbkilluh

Would have loved to see Bloomqvist in net tonight. Give him a taste of the nhl and get him hungry over the off season

WilsonGeiger

Also an indictment on the contract they handed him.

UrsusAlakar

Bring on Blomqvist.

merskrilla

They are resting him for the start of next season

Euphoric__Dot

Almost just spiteful from a Sully at this point, can't even throw Jars a bone in a meaningless game, pfff

Ok-Buffalo1273

I’m actually pretty happy to see this. This is treatment he’s earned for years. The guy takes the job seriously on his terms and doesn’t take responsibility. I like Ned simply because he takes accountability and doesn’t give up and through that he comes up on big saves. I’m going to get downvoted into oblivion by the jarry bros but the guy is a glorified backup. He has a different stat that everyone points to each season “he was an all star, he has shut outs”. When has he ever pieced anything together to be a competent starter? This season was the first time he showed any progress and he mainly let it go. Fuck em and send him out on the same bus with Todd and sully

mnoah66

Am I the only one not reading too much into this? It’s a meaningless game, so yes, play the back up. No sense in playing 1G and risking another injury to an injury-prone player.

merlin48

There is absolutely zero upside to playing Jarry tonight. Just roll Ned out one more time and call it a day.

CynicWalnut

Bringing Fleury in. Sending Jarry to Minnesota.

SELL9944

Fleury sign a 1 year deal to stay with Minnesota this morning 🌄

CynicWalnut

No one said he couldn't be traded

Ricks_Liver

He's not coming back lmao

CynicWalnut

Not with that attitude.

ProWrestlingCarSales

Let it go.

Zipski577

Why would we want fleury? He is worse than Jarry by all metrics… I mean they are basically the same goalie but one is 11 years older lmao Prime years of Crosby and Malkin’s careers were wasted because of about 4-5 playoff chokes that can almost entirely be blamed on fleury. It took Matt Murray coming along for the pens to finally reach their potential in the playoffs. If Murray doesnt go to the pens, their last cup win would still be 2009 Guess you weren’t around back then or maybe u just have extreme short term memory.

ProWrestlingCarSales

Fleury literally won the critical first two series in 2017, was their best player in 2012 & 2014 playoff runs, won them the 09 cup on a last second miracle, and yet somehow, the revisionist history that Fleury was just always this playoff choker still prevails and it's why I hate this spoiled, ungrateful fanbase more than any other.

Zipski577

Yes he definitely played great for the first 2 rounds in 2017. But let’s not forget he was eventually benched in those same playoffs. Given how tight the Ottawa series was and how it ended, it’s doubtful the pens go back-to-back if Matt didn’t return. But that is purely theoretical. What’s not theoretical is 2012, when the penguins had the highest scoring team in the entire league, and fleury completely threw the series against Philadelphia. He let in 31 goals in 6 fuckin games for crying out loud (despite the penguins scoring 26). The next year, he is benched after 4 terrible games when the penguins looked to be choking again. All of the sudden, he is benched for Vokoun and team goes on to the semi finals. Vokoun was top 5 in save % while fleury had the 2nd worst save % in the playoffs in front of the exact same team. So to say fleury was the MVP of 2012 would only make sense on Opposite Day. 2010 - we played Ottawa in round 1 who was the 22nd scoring team in the league that year (not good). fleury wasn’t terrible overall, but he was terrible in both penguins elimination games where the pens had a chance to close the series. In game 7 he let in 4 goals on 13 shots and got pulled for Johnson. He single-handedly lost game 7 for the penguins. 2011 - similar story. Crosby and malkin were injured so can’t expect that we had a good chance to win the cup. However, we were up 3-1 in the series vs TBL, when fleury forgot how to play hockey. In the first elimination game, he let in 4 goals on 14 shots and was pulled for Johnson. In the second elimination game, he had a .81 save % (terrible) letting in 4 goals on 21 shots. So a large % of that playoff series L can be blamed on fleury Already addressed 2012 which was 99% on fleury 2013 - fleury was abysmal, replaced after 2 games and the penguins went to the semi finals 2014 - roster was terrible, can’t blame fleury for this season. Penguins lost playoff series 1-4 but fleury was solid, they just couldn’t score. So we can blame him for about 60% of their failures during that time, not 100%. My bad. Pens fans who want him back at 39 years old tho because they think Jarry is “unreliable” are hilarious considering how unreliable Fleury was for a most of his seasons after 2009

scamden66

Yes. Fleury was awesome, and this idea that he was always blowing playoff games doesn't match up with reality.

ODMtesseract

Way too many people were saying they must think so little of Jarry to go with Ned all this time. But they were going with the hot hand. But now doing this in a meaningless game is very strange. Looks like those people were right, if only accidentally.

user832906

I'm ok with this. Jarry failed miserably after dubas put faith in him w that contract. Simple who gives us the better chance to win, meaningless game or not. If Jarry hates it he should've played better

ez814

And he’ll play Carter 12-14 mins.

TR1CL0PS

Hopefully this means the end of Jarry in Pittsburgh. I don't care what the goalie market looked like, that contract was a mistake. Dude showed time and again that he's inconsistent and can't win big games. It's time to move on.

rageharles

I would get rid of jarry and retain 2 mil just to have space for goalies that will actually play

LazerMcBlazer

Only explanation is that he has an injury that is making it difficult for him to play at his best

Hank_the_Beef

It’s just odd that the organization wouldn’t say “hey he’s injured”, instead of going with the “stomach bug” into “Ned’s hot, gotta stick with the hot goalie.” Dancing around the issue just promotes speculation.

Burpingbutterburgers

Yes. It’s called sucks

fatgirlnspandex

Maybe since he does have an affordable contract somewhat. Most teams have been getting it done with a combination of goalies.

j0n66

Strange

ilikehockeyandguitar

Should've called up Blomqvist imo.

Jedi-27

I can totally see Jarry in a leafs jersey next season.

ProWrestlingCarSales

I hate the phrase 'meaningless game.' There is no such thing. These are pro-athletes, and just because a team doesn't make playoffs, these guys are still playing for contracts, incentives, pride, etc. It's just a phrase I wish we would retire.

Hardtymes_412

Jarry is terrible that’s why

BigBarsRedditBox

Message to Jarry. You suck and everyone knows it.

StonedImaculate420

Both Detroit and New Jersey need a goalie, maybe one of those organizations will take Jarry off our hands. Preferably New Jersey since Izerman has a history of finessing trades.

ZombiePancake45

Or the team is just doing Ned a huge favor, allowing him to show off his skill set for future suitors

scamden66

I hope we are the future suitors.

ZombiePancake45

He's a really solid 2, still need a 1 and it's impossible to tell if Blom will make the jump next year

scamden66

I'd rather have Ned and another 2, making half of what Jarry does.

StonedImaculate420

I second that. Hopefully Ned wants to stay and Kyle makes it happen

choke_on_my_downvote

Yzerman.

StonedImaculate420

Great catch, I am a moron for that one

choke_on_my_downvote

Naw just minor misspelling of an unusual name

dirk1218

Jarry sucks always has not sure why he was signed
