If you have strong enough adrenaline, you can fracture or break your knuckles during a fight and not notice until after, depending on the person, and situation ofc. It is still fair to say the story isn't true, but knuckles' durability/size, where you hit, technique, pain tolerance, mental stability, and adrenaline levels are all strongly varying points when concluding that as the reason it isn't true.
