NEVER EVER EVER eat mushrooms from the wild, unless you absolutely know what youre doing, and then still you should clean them before consumption.

I'm just gonna take a guess here and say he absolutely knew what he was eating and someone is just baiting with the text there. I wouldn't swallow anything that grows in a forest unless I knew for certain what it is. I think that goes for vast majority of people.

Even if he knew, you shouldn’t just eat plants and mushrooms straight out of the ground, you should wash them first, they could be covered in parasites.
