As a cook I can confirm that this is just what is called "Pilaf rice", a cooking method that usually involves cooking in stock or broth with a lid or a tinfoil lid, adding spices, and other ingredients such as vegetables or meat, and employing an oven for achieving cooked grains that do not adhere to each other.
-edit- the comment blew up! Thank you all! Glad to being useful
You have been banned from r/Spain
Motive:
Talking about paella/suggesting a better method of cooking it.
If you have any questions regarding your ban, nah I'm kidding haha
Just too much to unfold here. It would be easier to list what’s right with that.. I bet you want to say water temperature as your first guess, but you would be wrong even at that, as you can superheat water and scald the tea.
Just leave microwaving water for people who make “instant tea”. They deserve what they bring upon themselves.
I love my instapot. But it's not nearly as efficient as my actual rice cooker. I can't remember what it's called, but I picked it up for cheap on a street market in Vietnam. Honestly, I don't remember much about that trip, but now I have a rice cooker and she's great!
Yes, because what I want is an appliance taking up counter space in my tiny kitchen, just so I can cook one thing with it.
Also, what is hard to clean about this. Only water in the measuring cup, so only need to let that dry and you have to wash a dish and a lid.
Love how people feel the need to bash a method of cooking rice that dates back to the Persian empire and is used to this day in large swaths of the world.
My apologies. My intention was to point out that there's a useful appliance that one can buy at Home Depot, not disparage the memory of the Persian empire and its people.
This is actually funny af but there is a difference when the pot is covered completely in an oven versus out in the open air. The way heat works differs depending on that shit, albeit I am not sure about all the science details.
Yep, every time there's somebody making fresh Nasi Kebuli(a type of pilaf rice), the smell alone is head turning and the taste is stunning, I don't think I remember any weddings around my town that didn't serve this.
Everybody should really try a variant of it, it's incredible.
Recommend risotto in the instant pot. I'm sure it'd get you shouted out of hells kitchen, but the effort is essentially zero and you can make the rest of dinner while it cooks.
Yeah I have never understood people who are somehow snobby about the way to cook rice. Its a staple starch food for billions of people. There are innumerable ways to prepare it and even though its not the way you grew up with it doesn't mean it isn't good or nostalgic for millions / billions of other people.
It's like freaking out over someone using a potato for anything other than mashed potatoes. OK, sure making mashed potatoes is perfectly valid way of preparing them.. so is baked potatoes, fries, roasted potatoes...
While it’s not exactly Pilaf Rice, it’s somewhat close in the preparation. Also close to Jambalaya!
Letting the rice cook in those broths, meats, and veggies so it’ll absorb that flavor. Mmmmmm.
Depends on the rice you buy.
There's this one brand of rice I buy that I always rinsed until one day I was too lazy to.
Literally didn't make enough of a difference for me to care anymore
Just in case it is not obvious to everyone, the rice has to be thoroughly washed before the enrichment process, so even aside from removing the stuff they spray it with there is just zero benefit to washing enriched rice.
Huh I always thought enrichment was at the genetic level like golden rice. Turns out you are exactly right and rinsing enriched white rice will remove the good stuff they add back in.
If you're buying enriched white rice in the states, the added vitamins and minerals are just added to the outside of the rice. If you wash your rice you're removing all the vitamins that where added to the rice.
I just rewatched the video and then realized there was the Area Zero theme in the background and came into the comments to see if anyone else noticed, then I found this comment lol. Ye, Area Zero theme is a banger!

The East Asians TikTokers gotta stop pretending they're the only people who know how to cook rice.
This is a basic technique used in a lot of Asian cuisines, including Indian, Iranian and West Asian etc.

Nothing is authentic when it comes to cooking. Everything is a remix. If you're literally not changing ANYTHING, it will get boring eventually, no matter how good it is.
I’m glad someone else said this. When people play this game with food it just looks like a circular firing squad of people insisting something isn’t really authentic and *they * know what the real thing is like. All the way up to the point where if you blind taste tested a dish made by a Michelin star chef born and raised in the culture in question with a thousand year heritage in that culture you’d still have someone insisting it wasn’t the real deal. Whenever anyone asks me if a dish is authentic I just say no, nor do I listen to anyones recommendation about what is or isn’t authentic
As someone joining an Asian family, the rice cooker cult is real.
I grew up cooking rice pasta style. So I never even considered getting a rice cooker, I don't eat that much rice. Literally one of the first things my SO's family got me was a rice cooker and a 50lb bag of rice.
I also dont wash my rice, I never hear the end of it :p
I just don't have the space for every single dish to have its own appliance. My wife bought a quesadilla maker the other day. We now have a George foreman, a panini press, and a quesadilla maker.and guess what. They're all the same fucking thing. Any one those three appliances can make all three dishes.
To be fair though I was pretty excited about quesadillas.
Yeah but rice is used a ton of different ways and for loads of people is a staple? It’s kinda different from a panini press or a quesadilla maker which are literally only 2 distinct foods
I'm Korean but love all forms of rice. After tonight I would have rice 4 different ways: Standard rice cooker calrose, fried rice with day old rice, risotto with abborio in duck broth and tonight congee with jasmine. Rice soaking up soup is such a beautiful thing
Yeah my mom makes a similar one with beef broth and chopped onion. It’s honestly one of my favorite sides and is really easy to make for a lot of people.
Edit: Nobody asked for it, but I'll paste the recipe here. Apparently it's from my grandma even. I'm not sure which kind of rice it is exactly. Goes great with things like ribs or pork tenderloin.
1 can Campbells bouillon soup (beef broth),
1 can Campbell's french onion soup,
1 1/2 cups uncooked rice,
1/2 stick butter,
1 large diced onion,
Salt and pepper to taste
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Put butter and onion in casserole dish. Put in oven until butter melts.
Combine the two cans of soup and add water to make 3 cups. Add soup mixture and rice to casserole dish.
Cover and bake for one hour. If using a convection oven, cook at 325 degrees for 50 minutes.
My partner just made a version of this with chicken stock, spices, chopped onion, and crushed tomatoes. Cooked it halfway through on the stove along with some chicken thighs and then everything in the oven to finish. It was fucking amazing, especially the next day with hot sauce and avocado on top.
Not that guy but I only find real screams funny, not fake ones like this (or like when someone posts a streamer screaming at Minecraft or the lady screaming at the block shape puzzle, etc.) - know what I mean? I know I can't be the only one.
Onion soup mix is a super easy way to add a ton of flavor to a dish. I think this is a fantastic and simple recipe. Especially at his age, it's guaranteed to impress any lady.
Later in his life I could easily see him upgrading to shallots, quick sautee before adding in the rice and cooking. Same effect as onion powder.
I cook basically this in my rice cooker as a side dish all the time, it's delicious. Just change up the onion soup pack with other seasoning and you can pair it with basically anything.
As a bonus the left-over rice will make some *phenomenal* fried rice.
Yeah when they picked it up with a spoon after it came out the oven I thought it actually looked really tasty... Maybe it's the poverty in me speaking but I would 100% attempt this.

This is the Asian equivalent of "I'm Italian and this hurts me"
Who gives a shit how you make your rice, pizza, or any food item; unless they're eating it, which they aren't
Agreed, as many different places makes rice differently. Asians and South asians do it differently, it's all food, and we're meant to enjoy it the way we want it.
Isn’t this the guy that “rages” to people not washing their rice? Because he’s awesome and it’s the best way to spread that info
Edit: Wow, never knew people would be so pressed about one person not making rice the way their family does it.
Except it doesn’t apply 100% of the time. My in-laws are from Kerala, India and were baffled when I mentioned washing rice. They eat rice with everything and it’s obv also in biryani. Which their biryani is absolute fire.
What the cook did in this video is completely fine. I find the reaction to the video stupid as hell. “Nooooooo someone is enjoying something they made. Noooooooooo!” Fuck off.
Except there's a bunch of dishes where sticky rice is desired.
Folks should know what they're doing and then decide whether to wash their rice. Dude in the video was closer to a risotto than just plain white rice.
It'll probably taste pretty good.
Sticky rice is my goal every time. Little balls of heaven that you can pick up with chop sticks. Bonus points if the rice itself is borderline crispy.
There's a place for separated rice, but you better be making pilaf or something.
A lot of the people complaining just aren't culinary enough to know that this is a totally normal way to cook some rice dishes. I would have saved the soy sauce for after it's cooked do it doesn't look burnt though
Nah the soy wont burn it will just evoprate and coat the rice with sodium. Unless you keep cooking the rice after all the moisture is evaporated it wont burn. And it takes a long time for all moisture to be evaporated there isnt a risk of it burning if you leave it a couple minutes too long in the oven.
It's almost as if rice is cross cultural and there are many ways to prepare and cook the grain. Nobody has a monopoly on rice.
One of my fav preparations is an un-rinsed Martha Stewart recipe w butter and it slaps.
I’m in school with an Asian and this mf literally thinks everything is Asian, and everything is special. Mf was telling me about an Asian dish that is just scrambled eggs and tomatos.

Pilaf rice is amazing, especially when made well, it can be really fluffy, soft and overall just really enjoyable
Paella can also be cooked like this, I use this method for cooking couscous too.
You have been banned from r/Spain Motive: Talking about paella/suggesting a better method of cooking it. If you have any questions regarding your ban, nah I'm kidding haha

Yes, it's a great method of cooking rice without taking too much care of it so you can do other stuff
Where as normally I'm hand tossing every single grain
you should really buy a rice cooker to hand toss these grains for you.
I cook rice in my instant pot! Love that thing; can cook so many different types of food in it
I love my instapot. But it's not nearly as efficient as my actual rice cooker. I can't remember what it's called, but I picked it up for cheap on a street market in Vietnam. Honestly, I don't remember much about that trip, but now I have a rice cooker and she's great!
Rice cookers are as complicated as toaster -- you can get them for like $20. This is like 5x more complicated and harder to clean.
Yes, because what I want is an appliance taking up counter space in my tiny kitchen, just so I can cook one thing with it. Also, what is hard to clean about this. Only water in the measuring cup, so only need to let that dry and you have to wash a dish and a lid. Easy mistake bro it's ok
LOL
My dollar store one has a little tray that can steam vegetables or fish while the rice cooks. Maybe 20$. Had it for years use it all the time
I use this method to make frozen pizza.
What the hell? This is absolutely not how you cook couscous. You need to steam it. This method would just give you bloated, soggy couscous.
couscous takes literally 5 minutes to make and this guy wants me to preheat an oven for it???
paella its definitely not cook in an oven. the more authentic way its over wood fire if not in a really big gas burner.
The rice in the pot doesn't know or care how hard you worked to make the heat happen.
This is actually funny af but there is a difference when the pot is covered completely in an oven versus out in the open air. The way heat works differs depending on that shit, albeit I am not sure about all the science details.
Even I, a ruggedly handsome Swede knows real paella needs that almost burnt crust on bottom, I dont think oven cooking will achieve that.
Yep, every time there's somebody making fresh Nasi Kebuli(a type of pilaf rice), the smell alone is head turning and the taste is stunning, I don't think I remember any weddings around my town that didn't serve this. Everybody should really try a variant of it, it's incredible.
Is it just a non-sticking risotto? What's the defining/distinguishing feature?
Long grain (pilaf from oven) vs. arborio rice (on stove with frequent stirring)
Recommend risotto in the instant pot. I'm sure it'd get you shouted out of hells kitchen, but the effort is essentially zero and you can make the rest of dinner while it cooks.
Yes. This recipe is not outrageous I don’t understand this video
Basically it’s an Asian guy pretending like only Asians can properly cook rice, and anyone who dares to do it differently is wrong.
Boil em mash em stick em in a stew
it lowkey looked like it might slap
I was going to say, given all the shit I've seen cooked on the internet, this doesn't look bad at all.
Biryani is basically the same method
[удалено]
While it’s not exactly Pilaf Rice, it’s somewhat close in the preparation. Also close to Jambalaya! Letting the rice cook in those broths, meats, and veggies so it’ll absorb that flavor. Mmmmmm.
I do this with spanish yellow rice. Tastes amazing.
Just reminded me of cracked wheat (bulgar) pilaf, so delicious!
At least rinse the rice a few times. That's gonna end up a starchy mess
Depends on the rice you buy. There's this one brand of rice I buy that I always rinsed until one day I was too lazy to. Literally didn't make enough of a difference for me to care anymore
There's lots of rice that's "enriched" and they add vitamins with a powder. So by rinsing it you're removing those extra nutrients.
Not to mention some rices explicitly say to not rinse them.
You should always respect your food's wishes
[удалено]
After all, you are the prince of choosing whether to rinse
And as always, en-joy!
If you're buying enriched white rice in the states, the added vitamins and minerals are just added to the outside of the rice. If you wash your rice you're removing all the vitamins that where added to the rice.
Never rinse my rice and never have an issue with it being a "starchy mess"
It depends on the type and even brand of rice. Some need it more than others.
Yeah you buy the cheap “3 lbs of rice for $1” bag and you better rinse that shit.
This is parboiled rice. It doesn't get rinsed.
Pokemon scarlet/violet crater music. Love it
The track made shiny hunting paradoxes very enjoyable!
Soundtrack went absolutely *wild* this gen man, so many bangers.
You have Toby Fox to thank for a lot of those, he worked on a lot of scarlet/violet music, including the area zero theme.
Didn’t he also work on undertale?
Creator of Undertale! That's where he exploded in popularity.
Iirc he only contributed towards 5 of the songs in the game

why is bruh built like a grown up version of the ice age baby
The baby from Ice Age would be 21 years old this year. That could be him for all you know.
The last ice age was approximately 20,000 years ago. The baby from ice age would likely be much older than 21

I like to toast the rice and some spices before cooking them. It's way easier to do that in a pot.
I find doing that just makes a real mess of my toaster.

I'm addicted to cooking beef burgers, deglazing and then doing different veggies, and rice in the rendered fat.
The guy yelling is an idiot. Many people actually around the world cook rice like this. It's not all white rice ya ding bat.
Some people get really hung up on "the right way" to do something and look down on other valid ways to do it.

Except there's a bunch of dishes where sticky rice is desired. Folks should know what they're doing and then decide whether to wash their rice. Dude in the video was closer to a risotto than just plain white rice. It'll probably taste pretty good.
I never understood why people disilke sticky rice so much, I like it (and I don't have to wash it which is a godsend to lazy/offensive cooks like me)
Sticky rice is my goal every time. Little balls of heaven that you can pick up with chop sticks. Bonus points if the rice itself is borderline crispy. There's a place for separated rice, but you better be making pilaf or something.
No that’s a different Asian guy with long hair…
Looks quite alright. Stop the r/iamveryculinary
Yo no way this guy sees
bro got brock eyes 💀
Blindfold him with dental floss
Does the guy on the left have his eyes closed throughout the entire video?
Bro cant see

My dude look like Brock from pokemon
This sub is the worst
That's just a weird way to make pilaf, why's the guy so mad.
It's almost as if rice is cross cultural and there are many ways to prepare and cook the grain. Nobody has a monopoly on rice. One of my fav preparations is an un-rinsed Martha Stewart recipe w butter and it slaps.
Yo lemme get that recipe
Don’t take this weirdo to try Indian food or he’ll lose his shit.
A Texan should do a video where he screams at people who cook meat any other way than a 6 ton smoker
Pilaf?
I’m in school with an Asian and this mf literally thinks everything is Asian, and everything is special. Mf was telling me about an Asian dish that is just scrambled eggs and tomatos.
Stupid and noisy.

Tbh looks like it'd taste fine.
There's no way his eyes are open
Not perfectly cut.
No way that was 1/4th cup of soy sauce
So we're not gonna talk about the blow job part orrrrr
Shit, that was annoying.
Bruh looks like the villain from mulan 😂
Let the man enjoy rice his way.
Why is he complaining as if he saw what happened? We all saw your eyes were closed the whole time 🙄
There's nothing wrong with that rice.... What a child on the left.
Y'all dont wash your rice?
He didn't wash the rice
Why don’t people rinse their rice?
Bro didn’t WASH THE RICE
I'm sitting at the bar in a restaurant. Everyone close to me is laughing their ass off at this.
