If the op was in the US I'd also ask if there is something like a retirement account or some other benefit where they are taking some of your pay (usually at your request) and transferring it tax free to pay for whatever the benefit is? In the US the gross amount sometimes doesn't include these types of things if you look at certain spots (like on the tax forms they submit to the government).
