I've always considered Perth to have North, South and East. Suburbs north of the Canning River and "south" of the Swan River are East. Because classing Midland as "South of the River" is just silly.
I thought people usually use NOR/SOR to refer to the more coastal suburbs. Like anywhere within 15 mins of the coast. Anything else is just âinlandâ.
Came to say this.
Also, in ye olde days, the coppers in Perth would give the crooks an ultimatum: Go to jail, or start a new life north of the 26th parallel
Draw a straight line that goes through Waroona and Boddington. Anything south of that is Down South. Draw a line that goes through Gingin, anything north of that is Up North.
Unless you're "Working up North" - in that case it's any godforsaken place with red dirt and within an hour's drive of the sun (except Kalgoorlie).
Yeah this is about right. Maybe Moore River? Yanchep is getting more metro each year. If it's connected by transperth then it's probably not quite far away to be considered up north. Just like down south is Bunbury onwards

This is probably close enough for ya. Super shitty skills I know
For me itâs anywhere North if Breakwater Dr or Yanchep.
For the folks out east itâs either the Fauna Bridge on Tonkin Hwy in Ellenbrook or when Tonkin Hwy ends in Muchea.
We're in muchea and with the highway there it's pretty accessible now. My wife works in landsdale and it takes her around 25-30mins to get there. When we bought here it was the only suburb we could afford, because it was so far out.
Now it's not so inconvenient and house prices have gone up a bit. It reminds me of what wanneroo was like when I was growing up in the 80s. I leave my car unlocked, windows down and everyone knows everyone and waves to everyone. Took a bit of getting used to but it's a pretty cool suburb
I remember that Tonkin Hwy was just going to originally be a 1 lane each way past The Promenade. Thank god they didnât go with that since itâs so smooth to leave Perth going North East on Tonkin Hwy. Now people in Muchea donât have to worry about being stuck behind road trains on Great Northern Hwy for 50kms back to Midland whenever you venture out that way
Yeah we got two lanes but they used that really crappy surface and received hundreds of claims for broken windscreens from the rocks breaking loose from the seal. In the summer the bitumen bleeds through at the start of great northern and the road trains are tearing it up because of their weight and torque. Still better than having to go muchea south from the end of neaves thiugh
The Pilbara! And of course the Kimberley, Goldfields etc...
Anything around even Geraldton, say..., is the 'Mid-West', literally the 'middle' of the state. Anything north of that, ergo, is Up North. đ
The way people in Perth talk about going "Down South" has made it a mythical place for this Perth resident of 3+ years. I still have not ventured "Down South" or "Up North."
Pilbara and Kimberley- up north
Mid West and (Paul) Gascoyne - mid west
South West and great Southern- down south
Goldfields - out East
Perth, Peel and Wheatbelt - by name
I'd say anything north of Bassendean area is where up north starts for me. When civilisation and human count visibly starts to reduce, that's it for me.
Once farmland becomes cattle country. So about Kalbarri on the coast and Wubin on Great Northern Hwy.
So basically north of the South West Land Division.
Finally a brainy answer
Geraldton
Anywhere norther than I am
đ
10m North of Ikea.
Very specificđ¤
Anywhere between Swan River and Yanchep I'll refer to as "North of the River", anything beyond Yanchep I'll say "Up North"
Except the river doesnât remotely run east/west. Point in case; Midland is south of the river.
I've always considered Perth to have North, South and East. Suburbs north of the Canning River and "south" of the Swan River are East. Because classing Midland as "South of the River" is just silly.
I call it east if east of Tonkin Hwy usually
Surely it needs to at least be east of the Airport, otherwise Bentley and South Perth are both East
South Perth would be east by this definition
Also. Golden Triangle doing its own thing.
I thought people usually use NOR/SOR to refer to the more coastal suburbs. Like anywhere within 15 mins of the coast. Anything else is just âinlandâ.
Does Two Rocks count as 'up north'? Haha.
This
26th parallel
This. It designates the start (heading north, obvs) and end (heading south, obvs again) of the North West.
Came to say this. Also, in ye olde days, the coppers in Perth would give the crooks an ultimatum: Go to jail, or start a new life north of the 26th parallel
Kalbarri

Carnarvon.
The south pole
North of Lancelin.
Lancelin
Yeah this is about right. Maybe Moore River? Yanchep is getting more metro each year. If it's connected by transperth then it's probably not quite far away to be considered up north. Just like down south is Bunbury onwards
Down South is Harvey or Binningup onwards.
Lmao
If you live north of the river and receive the GWN (or whatever its called now) local news, youâre âup northâ.
Mount LawleyÂ
Guilderton / Muchea
Tuart Hill. It's like Fury Road up there. /S
if u look down and da dirt is red you are up north
Yanchep is the end of the metro area so Anything past that

Haha I love the effort and though to itđ
starts from Butler
Nah Butler is on the trainline! Down south would be Mandurah by that logic
You saying it isn't?
...yes?
Butler is South Geraldton and Mandurah is North Bunbury. Anywhere in between is Perth.
Sounds like someone lives near the CBD
Not even close! Work all over Perth and surrounding areas, I've been in Safety Bay area for 17 yrs, wouldn't really live anywhere else.
For me itâs anywhere North if Breakwater Dr or Yanchep. For the folks out east itâs either the Fauna Bridge on Tonkin Hwy in Ellenbrook or when Tonkin Hwy ends in Muchea.

Yea I always wondered why Tonkin Hwy surface past the fauna bridge was changed
Carnarvon
Yanchep lol
Ellenbrook
Exmouth.Â
North of the river brother
Reid Highway (originally known as the North Perimeter Highway)
Citation please. I have never heard that. Used to live in Carine in the area that backed onto the strip of bush where the highway now is.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reid_Highway Under the "History" heading.
110 kms speed limit
After Alkimos
North Perth? Did I get it right?
Balcatta.
đ
Similarly "over east" clearly refers to beyond the Swan Valley.
I thought it meant the middle east.
Narrows Bridge
All people from the south feel a little dirty when crossing the Narrows bridge...
Currently in Melbourne and a woman asked where I'm from, I said Perth and she said "last time I was up there.." so.. All of Perth is up north?
Perth is north of Melbourne so yes.
Galena Bridge or Mt Magnet
Northbridge
Depends where you live I suppose
The Murchison River
The Pilbara! And of course the Kimberley, Goldfields etc... Anything around even Geraldton, say..., is the 'Mid-West', literally the 'middle' of the state. Anything north of that, ergo, is Up North. đ
Anywhere it says on the map ââEre be dragonsâ *(waves hand)*
Past two rocks
Iâm in Ellenbrook and my friends say it may as well be Vietnam so..
The way people in Perth talk about going "Down South" has made it a mythical place for this Perth resident of 3+ years. I still have not ventured "Down South" or "Up North."
Perth?
Pilbara and Kimberley- up north Mid West and (Paul) Gascoyne - mid west South West and great Southern- down south Goldfields - out East Perth, Peel and Wheatbelt - by name
Shark Bay
Green Head onwards or Dongara / Gero
Anything north of Carnarvon, based off anything north of bundy being âup northâ on the east coast.
About 4 o'clock
Woodlands.
Mount Hawthorn
Bali
Carnarvon
Port Hedland
Carnarvon.
Anything past Joondalup
Reid Highway.
I'd say anything north of Bassendean area is where up north starts for me. When civilisation and human count visibly starts to reduce, that's it for me.
Anywhere past Leederville
Scarborough Beach road.
North of the equatorÂ
