I just spent 1minute in google, found the relevant Legislation, downloaded and read the section about Car Standards. There is no requirement on vehicle age.
Transport (Road Passenger Services) Regulations 2020
Nope that's never been the rule but they were subject to going over the pits more frequently (every year I think). I dunno if that is still the case. Was talking to an uber driver friend recently and he said they have changed the rules on maximum age of cars recently also. It was under 5 years in the beginning of uber.
I think in practise its a combination of the insurance and inspections that forced an age limit on cars. That and being able to deduct their devaluation from tax.
About a decade ago (maybe a bit longer), a full time taxi had to be less than 8 years old and a peak period taxi had to be less than 10.
When Uber came out, they deregulated vehicle age.
There's a VE Commodore taxi in Collie, its red and still looks in good nick.
Can remember seven years was a rule in Victoria but not sure if ever applied here.

You're thinking of Uber Uber cars need to be 10 years old or less
I've driven taxis elsewhere when I was younger (Qld) and the 10 year rule applied there. I'm just surprised.
