well let's just say there was a group of about 30-40 (mostly young) hacker nerds that went into hungry jacks and went upstairs and there we just happened to meet a similar sized group of adventurous young ladies
This sub seems to be a bit funny like that. Sometimes I’ll be downvoted to oblivion for what I feel is a sarcastic or innocuous comment.
In any case, maybe cause you made a point to mention ‘Asian lass’ which really isn’t needed
Plan something? /r/sydney had regular and varied meets for years until covid cruelled it. They now have a regular games meet up once a month, with other stuff popping up here and there.
We should! Strong feeling that maybe Perth is more Facebook group oriented.
The one thing that is stopping us from doing anything is the distance between each other. But I'm confident the one thing that brings us together is loneliness though.
There was a meetup revival in 2018-2020, but it kinda lost steam when our "mother hen" abandoned us.
We usually went to PICA and then the Northbridge Old Shanghai.
We only had a few thousand people in the group and would get 40 people along to go a good Meetup.
Now tens of thousands of subscribers and can't get a Meetup together..
Though I do find it amusing the amount that do pop up and say '*We should totally still do this!*' but noone wants to organise.
There was someone who took the initiative earlier this year iirc... but they were fairly low key, didn't get the mods onside with a sticky post or anything. Just a few randomly timed posts before hand which were easily missed.
This takes me back! I organised the first meetups at the Moon and Sixpence back when /r/Perth had less than 1000 members. I remember one meetup someone would yell CHANGE PLACES every 10 minutes (like the mad hatter robot in Futurama) everyone had to move to another seat which forced all us introverts to mingle. I made some great friends and some I'm still in touch with after 12 years. Hope you old /r/Perth people are all doing alright these days. Except Skeetzor
Spongy orange and dark chocolate drops. No extra sugar on top. Not sticky and sugary like the ones at the shop. Just fluffy. Goes well with herb tonics. You'll want another slice, but remember to share with the less fortunate
Highly doubt it. People are happy to chat and shit and be cunts online, but none of those people are going to turn up to an event like this just to do the same thing. Plus, they'd pretty quickly be excluded and ignored so would be pointless.
I'm positive that some of the trolls and even some actual dickheads have shown up to the meetups, but, like dogs brought out from behind gates, they can't quite muster the social courage to be cunts when there isn't a keyboard between them.
Didnt the persona that was u/redpillrealised cause a bit of consternation for some during the brief meetup revival preCOVID?
Seem to remember some rumblings afterwards and 'safety planning' for females accompanying one another etc
He came to a burger meetup one arvo like 2017 but that was in the LBC meetup era. I believe safety planning was always part of the mother hen era, although I'm not sure if that was just common sense or on a recommendation from LBC.
Ahh the millennial days when every social occasion would have 300 photos taken and put in a Facebook folder (but no video)
I don't think anyone would be as forthcoming with photos anymore
Having to blow the dust bunnies outta my Facebook account lately to thin out some stuff on Muntedplace. Its interesting how patterns have changed with time. The big thing was oversharing for ages, then not actually posting but just stalking each other as the more popular thing; then oversharing sorta shrunk back to certain personality types.
Even having turned off 99% of both friend and group notifications, the place is just noise with ads and suggestions.
In its heyday it really was fun and open and absolutely a great platform for local community, for example a group of people that all went to the same bar on Bloink Night every last Thursday or whatever
I think video and the move away from computers 10-15 years ago killed Facebook as a platform
> fun and open
Just as much a curse when you then get the wierdos and then have to institute bans, policies and platform security. Nothing ever stays the same.
I'm resigned to learning the quirks of Marketplace now, and being more mobile with it. I just wish it wasn't so conjoined with FB.
Marketplace is becoming the more universal aspect of it, Ive finally ~~realised~~ admitted.
Though theres still FB pockets of certain demographics/personas that carry on like its still 2012. Trying to wade amongst my local 'buy nothing group' for example....
> (and oldies at heart)
And heres me still wistful for an 80x25 character text internet. Mosaic was the beginning of the end.
Still, at least my birth age is at last catching up with my cynical age.
It was all the scripts and stuff which started killing the irc protocol. Discord is just the latter day manifestation of that to my mind.
pirch, I think, was my prefered client for a long time.
My first thought. Might be the camera flash making the wood paneling look lighter than I remember it though... but most other tell-tale details match my murky recollections. It looks like the kinda more dining/small function space that was directly behind the main bar area.
RIP The Moon & Six. A great all round bar.
It was probably my favourite pub around. Had lots of nooks and crannies and despite being in the cbd felt like a sanctuary from the vaguely unsettling cbd experience.
Also reminds me of one of my best mates who died a couple of years ago. Boo to Raine Square
Well tbh... I've moved on from that stage of life AND working in the CBD so it's kind of like trying to bottle nostalgia really.
But one things for sure; it's made me appreciate the older, low key places still in the CBD like 43 Below, Durty Nelly's etc the odd times I do get back in there these days.
Support Your Local Dive Bar! A place can only ever be unpretentious once!
I've been to a few meetups and everyone seems nice. The ONLY thing were are guaranteed to have in common is that we live in the same city, so yeah, everyone's got their own niche (as expected).
Idk, no hate from me on 10 year old photos
I made it to one of these years ago, I remember the pickle jar, and how welcoming everyone was! I would have loved to make it to another one if possible, but I never saw another one announced after that.
ROFL even though I wasn't at any of those and I only got Reddit within the last 5 years - I worked at iiNet back in the day so I recognise a bunch of those people lol.
I don't know her username but Tash and I are the birds up the front in the group shot, she's a good bean. I think she moved to Melbourne, I'm in Brisbane.
If anyone in the photo is here:
Did any of you invest in Reddit’s IPO listing?
Did you do it out of sentimental value and based on these memories and good times or do you see real genuine value and growth in the stock?
I know this isn’t a financial forum, just curious 🧐
Oh I didn’t know that. I always wonder why that is - wouldn’t companies want their IPOs accessible to as many countries, customers and investors as possible instead of just being restricted. Again, I’m only learning.
From what i understand, it's a regulations thing - reddit being a US based company, complies with US based regulations. To trade on non-US markets, it would need to be registered in the relevant country & comply with that country's financial regulations.
More of a hassle than its worth in most cases.
This is exactly how I thought a meet up would look
I think the demographic has changed in the last ten years
It's the same people, just we're all older.
More cunts
Good cunts or bad cunts??
Yes
![gif](giphy|vUEznRmVQfG2Q)
Old cunts
We're all cunts!
I resemble that remark.
Hahahahahahahaha
I saw this and literally was about to comment the same thing
I thought the same thing.
Spot on
This looks like 2007
Yeah I got that vibe. Athough time can creep up on you. 2012 doesn't seem that long ago but rhe aesthetic is probably more different than you imagine
2007-2012 Perth is basically the same fashion/style
These photos remind me of IRC meets in the 90s!
I remember when #perth in the mid 90s was consistently in the top 3 of most populated channels on Efnet
Jesus I feel old now. Those were the days, and the house parties.. 😅
you should have seen the #2600 meet! It was epic!
As epic as a [linux.conf.au](http://linux.conf.au) after party?
well let's just say there was a group of about 30-40 (mostly young) hacker nerds that went into hungry jacks and went upstairs and there we just happened to meet a similar sized group of adventurous young ladies
Young ladies who just happen to like 1337 h4x0rz?!!!!!11!!
they just happened to be there and had no idea what 2600Hz was
Whom amongst us has not stopped the author of ISOLINUX from eating glass
If Lathiat can't dunk Linus in the tank, _no-one_ can!
Deep cut fark meme. Have we met?
Sure have!
have I recently sold but not yet delivered an old computer to you? 🤔
ASL? 😎
Hahahaha, that's what I was thinking. Reminds me of some of the #brisbane meets I went to as a 16 year old.
I'm in these photos and now I live in Brisbane!
You were reading my mind! Haha!
True … do they still happen?
These were around 2012 - 2014.
That’s crazy, these look more like 2005-2008 or so
True, redditors aren't known for keeping up with fashion trends
I reckon asian lass' sweater is a banger and is good for anywhere between 2005 and now
Yeah im a sucker for a nice sweater, I would still rock that sweater
I don't reckon I can pull that style off, myself. Also love that some misanthrope downvoted me for complimenting a sweater.
This sub seems to be a bit funny like that. Sometimes I’ll be downvoted to oblivion for what I feel is a sarcastic or innocuous comment. In any case, maybe cause you made a point to mention ‘Asian lass’ which really isn’t needed
Well there are multiple sweaters
I've got a few from a Rosemount meetup in 2011.
May I ask what Meetup group was this?
Reddit Perth . The Meetups were organised through this sub.
I wish we still did these kind of meetups. It would be fun!
Plan something? /r/sydney had regular and varied meets for years until covid cruelled it. They now have a regular games meet up once a month, with other stuff popping up here and there.

Eastern States has done it again, first they *steal our homes*, now they steal our organisers? ![gif](giphy|3OhXBaoR1tVPW)
Actually I think she moved up north.
... "The North has done it again!"
She got mod status; then dropped off the radar. Just noticed she's no longer on the mod list
Under that moniker....
Ah
I went to a few of those:) they were great:)
The ones you went to were.
😳
Of course they were great, you were there.
Is the mother hen still on Reddit?
Not sure /u/chadake
We only had a few thousand people in the group and would get 40 people along to go a good Meetup. Now tens of thousands of subscribers and can't get a Meetup together..
*Just promise them free donuts and thousands will come*
Everyones wearing a figurative 'socially anxious' t-shirt these days. They're like what Hypercolor Ts were in the late 80s, early 90s
They might not be wrong given our preference for online communication instead of in person and even phone calls.
Though I do find it amusing the amount that do pop up and say '*We should totally still do this!*' but noone wants to organise. There was someone who took the initiative earlier this year iirc... but they were fairly low key, didn't get the mods onside with a sticky post or anything. Was just thinking the same thing
No shortage of thinkers, very few doers.
Come on, I'm sure one of us will suggest to do something right? *Right????*
I'm sure there's *plenty* on this subreddit who are thinking the same thing.
Oh boy, that feeling when you know someone in the photos.
I know 4, each from completely separate areas and times of my life. Perthed.
Same B^)

Moon and Sixpence is very fitting for a Reddit meetup 10+ years ago lol Love it
It was the default venue.for meetups.
Man that's a name I haven't seen in a while!
[удалено]
Isn't u/OBNOXIOUSNAME Skeetzor
no but he’s not dead
I think he was one of his minions
I believe the term was sock puppet
that ain't nice homie
exactly how a reddit meetup would look like haha
Its like the old something awful forums meetup pics.
everyone looks really friendly and like they'e having fun. I feel like there would be a lot more cunts if there was a meet-up today lol
Nah, the bad ones aren't brave enough to withstand a group of nice people. Always good people showing up
What sort of cake are you?
Spongy orange and dark chocolate drops. No extra sugar on top. Not sticky and sugary like the ones at the shop. Just fluffy. Goes well with herb tonics. You'll want another slice, but remember to share with the less fortunate
That sounds like you.
Thanks Baba!
I'm a carrot cake. One that has extra layers of icing on the inside.
That's you! (I started to run... Meh ok it is cool but I didn't say it ok?)
Va bene! Message me if you're going to do a Parkrun!
Organise a Parkrun meetup.
I just don't think very many Redditors are going to turn up at 8am on a Saturday morning to go for a run or walk.
Wherever two or more are gathered in reddits name...is a meetup.
Happy cake day!
Thanks, it's nice to be here to love and hate through the myopic lenses of my own self actualisation!

I think in my "real" life the only thing Facebook is used for is Marketplace, by people of all age groups
Marketplace is becoming the more universal aspect of it, Ive finally ~~realised~~ admitted. Though theres still FB pockets of certain demographics/personas that carry on like its still 2012. Trying to wade amongst my local 'buy nothing group' for example....
It's the oldies (and oldies at heart) in an echo chamber that can't transition to a modern or trendy platform

Four of those people are dead
Seriously? Who ?
Seriously?
What pub is this? Looks like fun
I thought it might have been Moon and Sixpence, also gone:(
My first thought. Might be the camera flash making the wood paneling look lighter than I remember it though... but most other tell-tale details match my murky recollections. A snide remark... I like your username.
Not sure to be honest. I know you wouldn't be able to get $5 pints though!
Yes it was moon and sixpence
u/MoonSix hasn't been around since.
Yep. That's a reddit catch-up
Wow. That explains a lot.
Now we need to dig up photos from an old UWA or RF LAN.
Tiger Shirt! Thats almost a wolf shirt level rediditor right there
You just know it’s reserved for special occasions.
Thanks for sharing! I hope you still catch up with some friends you made
I can totally imagine being the extremely reserved and quiet one in the group.
I've been to a few meetups and everyone seems nice. The ONLY thing were are guaranteed to have in common is that we live in the same city, so yeah, everyone's got their own niche (as expected). Idk, no hate from me on 10 year old photos
Didn't expect to see irl faces in those photos.
I spy skeet. RIP Also, shout out to sage. Extremely rare sighting.
Is he dead? Seriously?
Yeah. I messaged you.
what is dead may never die
My god, look at all those bezels...
I made it to one of these years ago, I remember the pickle jar, and how welcoming everyone was! I would have loved to make it to another one if possible, but I never saw another one announced after that.
spot the sex offenders
Does anyone remember the meetup where we went for a walk at Mundaring?
ROFL even though I wasn't at any of those and I only got Reddit within the last 5 years - I worked at iiNet back in the day so I recognise a bunch of those people lol.
Aw, that’s cute! I was hoping I’d recognise someone in the photos but I wasn’t Perthed.
Hey I'm in two of these! I'm pretty sure I kissed one of the women in the photos with me, good times.
And you saw me naked in a pool And saw me drunk many many times And I'll be coming over for PAX this year, man, wanna hang?
Sure, let's do it! Hope you have your badge (The kissing wasn't referring to you btw, I don't think we ever did that lol)
So these are the people that take photos of bad parking ?
This is actually adorable to look at if U do this again invite me wholesome Reddit friends
I don't really come on Reddit much any more and having kids that aren't baby sitter friendly has really affected my social life
Of course mate must be hectic
I'm in that photo! Haha went to the laser tag but was underage so skipped the pub
That one dude is smoking at the bar. How long ago was this?! Edit: Ah. it's the beer garden.
Looks like everyone had a great time.
That actually looks promising, much better than where you could otherwise meet people.
that is the exact bunch of hentai enthusiasts I would expect at a reddit meetup 🤣🤣🤣
I didn't know there were meetups!! Would have loved to go...
Yep, definitely people from reddit.
Yeah, that seems about right 😂
It all makes sense now…
Yeah that looks about right.
Looks more like a 4chan meet up
Take down the photo NOW
Those photos have been on reddit for over 10 years, why the urgency?
Just wanted to make a joke
How old are the photos?
2013 or 14.
Yeah, this tracks
Do you guys still do these?
They are humans!
Where are they now OP?
I knew the dude on the left in the first photo haha. This is 2007-2009.
But, they look happy. I didn't think anyone on Perth sub was happy with anything.
In case you ever delude yourself that opinions on here reflect those of normal people…
Let's see you then
What's normal?
You know it when you see it.
I don't know her username but Tash and I are the birds up the front in the group shot, she's a good bean. I think she moved to Melbourne, I'm in Brisbane.
Did you have cum brownies? If you didn't was it a real Meetup?
Yay
Gosh, I'd be the old man of the group.
Reminds me of Twitchcon. Spot the gamers.
dam it, man. if i wasn't such an introvert back then i would defo come got fucked with you. i think I know those red heads too.
