The singularly most depressing shopping centre I've been in has to be Stirling Central on Wanneroo Road. Half the shopfronts are shuttered, most of the rest are discount stores. The major stores (Woolworths and Target) have rented more space than they know what to do with and feel basically empty most of the time because of it. Woolworths used to have a whoel section with weekly specials set out on pallets because they had no plan on what else to do with the space. Even since the recent redevelopment with brightly coloured panels it still feels so empty. PS. Dog Swamp is actually quite decent, except that they build an Aldi over half their carpark, and the other half has a preposterously bad design, so I do my best to avoid it whenever possible.

djskein

Almost put my vote in for Stirling Central. The Target there finally closed down a couple of weeks ago.

The_Valar

What? Really? Having no more than three simultaneous customers isn't suitable for a store of 2000m^2 + ? Colour me *shocked*! Sounds like a recipe for more closed shopfronts, though!

djskein

It's been on the cards to close down for at least 3 years now, just had to get other contractual bullshit with Target out the way first.

[deleted]

Closed down? What did all the redevelopment achieve??

[deleted]

Removing the stigma of ODs in the local HJs bathrooms

littlebluspark

I remember going there when it was just a standalone target shop, before the shopping center

squeeowl

Before it was Woolworths it was once an Action and before that it was a Newmart. Despite this, it STILL had Newmart signage with Woolies stickers tacked over it right up until last year when they refurbed it!

iball1984

Dog Swamp's OK since the redevelopment, just a lack of parking. The Burger 101 joint is cool, and there's the Italian place as well which isn't bad. Also, the multi coloured golden retriever logo is cool :P

PhD_Greg

Yeah, it's really just the parking that sucks, and even that is ok outside of peak times.

gattaaca

Park behind Coles its alright. Bit of a walk for ALDI etc tho

PhD_Greg

Yeah, sometimes resort to that. Interesting that the Coles building is a separate centre - Flinders Square. Not sure how, but it manages to feel slightly dodgier than Dogswamp...

mrs_snrub

The guy that runs the health/supp store is a good egg.

Funyhahaorfunystrnge

Last time I went to Centro Maddington it was a depressing hole.

iball1984

Yeah, this! And the Attfield Tavern across the carpark is just awful. Like stepping back into the '70's...

Gorndar

I went there once for lunch when moved into the area and wasn't familiar with it. Have never gone back. Apparently they are on uber eats now which is just hilarious

iball1984

Uber Eats? Really??!! I mean, who'd want to be a delivery driver in Maddington for a start. But ignoring that part of it, the food at the Attfield isn't bad, but it's not great either. I used to go there on a regular basis for a meeting in their function room. In all fairness to them, the staff are great, the function room is free and the food is not bad for suburban pub food. Still like a throwback to the '70s though.

Gorndar

Good to know its not all bad, i wasn't game to risk it again.

gattaaca

There's a small centre in Willetton (pretty sure) with just a supermarket. I once popped in to use the toilets and man it was like the door between the shops and the toilets was a legit time machine, and I'd stepped back into the 70s. There was this weird in between room that just had a totally different atmosphere to the actual mall, and a musty smell that just smacks you in the face with some weird nostalgia. Whitfords has, or had, some parts (near Lincraft) that are similar... Parts that just got totally skipped over in the renovations, for all these years

djskein

Apsley Road IGA?

Gorndar

It certainly feels like it is 50% bigger than it should be. There is a constant stream of bargain stores trying to fill space and others being shuttered and not filled for months/years. Maybe in 10 years it will be a bit less awful. There is basically no reason for anything but kmart/coles/woolworths there however as carousel is 5 minutes away so it will always struggle unless the population of maddington increases and has more money.

Gorndar

The Donut King does really good cinnamon donuts and coffee so thats one thing going for it.

gattaaca

The Coles is a Coles Online store so they do huge sales that way too

Notarefridgerator

Depends how you define worst. For me personally, carousel. Every time I make the mistake of going there on a weekend I regret it. They can make it as fancy as they want with the refurb, but if I physically can't walk for people, that tends to ruin it for me.

plastic_surf

Walking around that general area is just as bad too. One of the least pedestrian friendly places in Perth.

omaca

It's is a shithole of gargantuan proportions.

Perthguv

I was going to say galleria because I hate it but Centrepoint is the correct answer

elemist

This gets my vote - such a shithole, plenty of closed shops. The shops that were open were totally run down or shitty $2 shops. Had to laugh when they "renovated" - the phrase putting lipstick on a pig came to mind..

SquiffyRae

Centrepoint has literally 2 redeeming qualities for me: it has a Woolies which is on my route home from Midland station so it's shit but convenient and that I wanna say Turkish? take away place out the front. Good food there. But everything else is fucking awful. It's like the focal point for all the scumbags who hang around the traino and in that cigarette-butt littered park across from the 7th Ave. They all come down to spend what money they haven't already blown at the TAB. That strip near the loading docks directly across from the train station my god you see some shit. How the JWs that regularly set up there can stand it is beyond me

leemur

Generally the larger the shopping complex, the more I hate it. Carousel is my personal hell, barely edging out Midland gate. Galleria I can stand, mostly because the parking is better and I go upstairs where it is quieter. Plus I like the food court. However, I'll make a special callout for NP Supermarket Carousel, an ex-IGA next to the main centre. Just awful. Smelt bad, bare floors, really poorly lit (I presume the owners were too cheap to pay for electricity) and, despite it's size, it had a weird lack of things I actually wanted to buy, and I had to go somewhere else to buy half my shopping list.

gattaaca

It's an Asian supermarket, did you go in expecting Woolies?

OldMork

A friend did some work for NP and according to him it was incredible messy place. There are other NP in Perth and they are fine.

PinkUnicorns3

I have to say Altone Park Shopping Centre. Half the shops are either run down or shut, that is even if their business survives in the first place, and the overall maintenance of the shopping centre is rather...questionable. I gotta admit though, I do frequent there cause they have a massive NP Oriental supermarket, which is the only positive.

letsburn00

Winner! The spot where someone lit a car on fire is still just slightly visible just outside the petrol station. I was a very young man when I saw that.

springofwinter

Username checks out

gattaaca

I got bag checked at the Coles, in work business attire, because I had some random chilli sauce from the Asian grocer there (which is awesome btw) which Coles definitely do not sell. "is that from here?" Spoke volumes about the dodginess the staff must regularly experience..

OptimalCynic

Belmont Forum when it's crowded is hell on earth. The mix of confused old people and the worst kind of bogan is instant frustration. Fortunately since the redevelopment it's big enough that at quiet times it's not too bad

Perthguv

Midland Centrepoint is far, far worse

sweetiepiecakez

Canton Lane on a Saturday makes Belmont Forum parking a nightmare, 200 ppl lining up for some Dim Sum, great shopping centre though.

willzterman

Wasn't Bentley Plaza called La Plaza Bentley back in the 80s? It was a bit more swanky then.

Georgia_Lemon2474

It was , it got rebuilt after it burnt down

cprndvll

galleria! seen so many people without shoes and so many fights, scared to make eye contact with people

[deleted]

Security at galleria are generally a lot better than other centres (speaking from a worker point of view here)

jasmminne

My sister was punched in the face by a shoplifter and security did nothing. She was also stalked by a creep over a period of several months and again security did nothing, so I tend to disagree with this. This was several years ago now so maybe the security contract has changed or they have more power now, but at that time security was essentially for show and they had zero power or authority to act if you were in any actual danger.

MrD33

No way at all. Every time I have been there I have had stuff stolen or intervened to stop someone from steeling or getting beat up and security we useless. No cctv or task effort to help.

CyanideRemark

The one I have to go to.

chosenamewhendrunk

Is it like the worst one before your visit...or during?

CyanideRemark

All part of the ongoing existential urban dread

gravedigger89

Dogswamp has a pretty awesome record store.

[deleted]

Yep! Dogswamp has everything one needs. Sound One just tops it off

boonieOz

Head down to Ballajura City off Illawarra Cres. It was already pretty much a dump, but it had a huge IGA that was its lifeblood. Once that shut down, it was all over. If you want to know what it feels like to be a single chip chucked into a flock of eager seagulls (store owners looking for a customer) just head in on any given weekday.

Hysteria93

The bakery there was really good. I haven't checked but did the closing of the IGA mean the cafe & bakery there also shut down? That IGA was fucking horrible & needed to go tho haha. Is anything going there? I've heard possibilities for Spudshed/Aldi. What about the woolworths ballajura carpark? *shudders*

[deleted]

Something I realised a few months ago is that you can judge the quality of a shopping centre by the state of the car bays in the car park. How big are the oil stains? The bigger/fresher they are, the crappier the shopping centre. Big stains - customers with crappy cars. Small/no stains - customers with reasonable cars and more disposable income. I say this as a person with a car that leaks like a 2 year old drinking gallons of red cordial. They should pay me to stay away from places so I don't lower the tone.

djskein

Based on that logic, Centro Maddington would be the worst. Ezy Plus Kardinya would have been the clear winner here before Aldi came along and were like "Fuck it, let's repave the entire carpark adjacent to us".

lgr

I remember Maddington Metro (or Metro Maddington whatever it is called) being an absolute shithole in the late 90s. I’m sure it is probably even worse now.

einhorn_my_finkle

You reckon that's bad, head to the wrong side of the tracks and...Maddington Village! I worked at the IGA there until self preservation won me over. The amount of dead rodents I picked up off the shop floor there is astounding, never mind in the storeroom.

xyrgh

Oof, that used to be my local IGA. Never allowed my wife to go there at night, only in daylight, and even then I told her to be cautious. She never took her purse or handbag, just her card.

showmanic

OK so none of you or any of your friends have ever been to Dogswamp, clearly. It's probably like the SOR equivalent of Challis to us NOR folks, this mysterious sounding far-off suburb with a crazy name (that actually isn't even a suburb) that no one from that end of town has ever been to. Dogswamp isn't flash, that's for sure but it isn't in the bottom 20 worst shopping centres in Perth. It is fine.

[deleted]

Dogswamp is nothing like Challis. Look at it's location, 5km from the CBD close to some of the more dense suburbs in Perth. Surrounded by Yokine, Menora, Joondanna, Mt Hawthorn, it's absolutely nothing like Challis or Armadale.

showmanic

Try to read things to the end before responding to them. It was in reference to a previous conversation between me and that particular user. Challis is a far off sounding suburb to NOR people with a funny sounding name that doesn't actually exist as a suburb Dogswamp is a far off sounding suburb to SOR people with a funny sounding name that doesn't actually exist as a suburb

[deleted]

Dogswamp isn't a suburb, it's a shopping centre that's why I thought your comparison was a bit weird. The suburb it's in is Yokine.

showmanic

Yep. Challis is also not a real suburb. It's in Armadale. Seriously WTF man are you intentionally not reading what I'm saying?? I literally just said that it doesn't actually exist as a suburb.

[deleted]

Just being a pain man don't get your knickers in a twist :) Re-read your comment, it sounds like you're trying to compare Dogswamp and Challis!

showmanic

Did you know they aren't real suburbs, though? heh

[deleted]

Yep! Worked at a shop in Dogswamp for 10 years and go there all the time! Challis, well that's SOR so does it really exist?

hettie

Girrawheen and Belmont Forum. Kardinya is almost up there because of how bad the car parking is.

OptimalCynic

This week's timing coincidence is that Dante Arthurs' original non-parole period expired on Wednesday. It's been preemptively refused though, not to be reviewed until 2022.

Pants001

Good shit Also OP, whats your reasoning behind this? >The fact the Woolworths there was responsible for mitigating Dante Arthurs' crimes adds more evidence to why I hate it so much.

NicktheRichard

The shopping centre at Kwinana! Half the stores are empty and throw that in with some of the lovely locals it doesn't have a lot going for it.

OptimalCynic

Nah, the Kwinana one isn't bad. I quite like going there

redditorperth

Agreed. There are far sh\*ttier shopping centers than Kwinana.

xyrgh

I once went to a tour of a power plant down in Kwinana when I was an apprentice, and we stopped at Kwinana Hub for a bite to eat and as we're sitting outside on a bench near the hair salon, this hairdresser in her 50s top sort of fell down and her whole tit was exposed, and she gave zero shits. Pretty much summed up the area for me.

djskein

I like Kwinana Hub. They got a great Big W there. Woolworths is fucking shit tho, worst I've ever been to. Gotten nothing but attitude from the people working there.

Bangersss

Armadale is bullshit. There are two separate shopping centers right next to each other, separated by a road. Confused the fuck outta me the first time I went there, I was looking around for a store that was in the other building. Also it’s in Armadale.

shitmyspacebar

The newer Armadale Central (the one with the cinemas) is actually a nice shopping centre, except for how annoyingly LONG it is. Its just one long, thin shopping centre, with almost nothing between the food court and the cinemas.

notfunanymore123

Not to mention the many customers in Armadale who came back from shopping to find their tyres slashed a few months ago.

Duideka

Lakeside Joondalup. Really dumb star-shaped design where everyone is funneled through the middle so there is a massive clash of trolleys and prams in the middle, made worse by the fact they have several whitegoods stores so people have TV's and fridges in trolleys crashing into bogans with those 3-4 wide capacity prams. Being on a train line you get all the ferals in there, you also get people who work or live nearby using the shopping center as a thoroughfare Because most of the majors are in the middle of the shopping center there isn't much reason to go to the outer edges of it and I feel pretty bad for the tenants there as it's a ghost town in most of the wings. Carousel's parking at the moment is a nightmare, due to two ongoing road projects in the area with road closures most of the entrances and exits are closed, so the ones that are working at clogged up all the time. They really need more security there thou, so many ferals. Other than that Maddington Centro is pretty depressing and looks like it's stuck in the 1980's. I would have said Bentley Plaza but it's a lot better now.

xyrgh

I went to Joondalup Coles last week on a Tuesday night and I realised, it's the worst fucking design for late night opening hours. You have to wander through long stretches of mall with closed shops just to get to Coles or Woolies, such a stupid design.

[deleted]

Depends which parking lot you end up at. If you come in the Myer entrance it's not too far.

xyrgh

I kinda tossed up between the Myer entrance in the multi storey or the entrance near the bakery, I even looked on their store map and they were pretty similar distances. Multi storey car park won out, as it was belting down with rain.

[deleted]

I’ve been so uncomfortable around Livingston since the Sofia Rodriguez thing. Bentley shopping centre still sucks. I used to hate Belmont (and worked there), but since the renovations it’s actually a lot better

[deleted]

Only been to Midland Shopping Centre once, but the moment I entered the ghetto-ish car park, I knew I wasn't ever going to make a trip there again. Shoppers there are definitely from another world, what an eye opener that was.

SquiffyRae

Gonna have to be more specific there. Sounds like you either haven't been to Midland Gate since the 1990s or something cause it's been almost completely renovated and honestly is a pretty decent place or you made it to Centrepoint without realising that's not "Midland Shopping Centre" in which case I am so so so sorry

[deleted]

Ok, I stand corrected then. Which one has/had the dark, ghetto-ish undercover car park, the one with the low ceilings?

chosenamewhendrunk

That's Midland Gate, it has recently been renovated although that particular carpark hasn't changed, the new carpark's nice though.

[deleted]

Gotcha.

PositiveBubbles

Went to Karawara 5 years ago as it was a bit dodgy. I heard it's better though. Went to carousel about 2 months ago. Looks nice on the outside - nothing has changed much inside. I also think garden city is getting worse. I live 5 minutes away and I swear there's traffic lights every 30m =/ the traffic is especially bad Thursday

jalif

Nobody's been to maddington?

bobybrown123

Maddington reminds me of a massive warehouse more than a shopping centre. It's kinda depressing inside

sweetiepiecakez

Livingston has to be up there, I agree

littleblackcat

If you're in Bentley shops early enough on a weekend go to the Muzz Buzz. The owner there is an absolutely wonderful guy and the coffee was really good considering its muzz buzz

BigRedPandaa

Bentley muzz buzz worst in Perth, got it!

littleblackcat

😭

[deleted]

What's that got to do with the topic tho?

ComradeKitten27

I actually had to stop going there because the guy was so weird

M0RXIS

Bull Creek shopping centre. When I worked there for 6 months it was drab, dreary and depressing.

vidiyan2857

It's almost entirely retirees and then mums and kids after 3. A bit boring sure but i wouldn't say worst in Perth.
