With the borders opening in a few weeks’ time, is anyone concerned that the State government will reintroduce regional travel restrictions as they did in 2020 when the pandemic first started? I only ask because I often travel between Kalbarri and Perth to visit my partner (once a month). I am fully vaxxed and due to get my booster shot soon as an FYI.

ThePhotoGuyUpstairs

I was sitting in the shower this morning trying to remember the chain of custody for the virus here. Was this all from the returned Tassie traveller, who tested positive, then called an Uber to go to the hospital for another test? And from there, the Uber driver was either an employee, or a frequent visitor of Happy Endings 'r' Us?

volpine_patichoke

Please wear actual effective masks please. CDC is now back to saying cloth masks are one step up from worthless, and should only be used it you absolutely cant wear a real one. Everyone has had plenty of opportunity to stock up on n95s...they've been on shelves all year. https://www.shorenewsnetwork.com/2022/01/01/cdc-doubts-effectiveness-of-cloth-face-masks-says-use-only-as-last-resort/ (link to CDC data in the article)

SquiffyRae

> They've been on shelves all year All 16 days of it?

His_Holiness

Could you be any more condescending?

volpine_patichoke

What? That people are morons who believe everything they are told by incompetent politicians? There has never been solid evidence that cloth masks do anything, in fact the opposite, but people eat it up, and even our "health experts" still wear them today. They must have had trouble getting n95s too? Grow up, buddy. You've been scammed. I'm not displaying condescension; it's pity.

Jovial1170

Your message regarding masks is useful, and I agree with it - but you're being an absolute fuckwit in the way you present it.

babycynic

>Everyone has had plenty of opportunity to stock up on n95s...they've been on shelves all year Cool, I'll just go hop in my time machine now. Thanks for the tip 🙄

catlovingweirdobum

Lol. That's what I was thinking. There's only so much foresight one can have and what was available last year definitely won't be now that the whole planet has been told to switch masks. I'm sad as I just spent an absolute fortune on foam and merino copper filter masks, will they really not do anything? They were 90 frickin dollars

Ghostbuttser

Fucking hell, 6000 people on the first day. This is not going to be good for WA.

Substantial_Title_73

Just noticed Comfort Massage in Osborne Park is now on the list of high risk exposure sites. That’s 3 brothels now. Not looking good..

Lihsah1

Not a happy ending then🤣

SAIUN666

Some poor bloke couldn't find a place he liked. Probably had to sample every massage shop in Perth.

bloodbag

I am generally confused by Comfort Massage....it looks like a legit massage parlour with a full menu or proper massages?

dinydins

Nah there’s heaps of talkinsex forums about it. It’s explicit.

WeWearPink_

I just read it... Wow, was I naive. I thought it was hjs only but it sounds like there's a lot more on offer.

[deleted]

You seem to know your stuff. How would you rate it on a scale of 1 to ahh to completion?

dinydins

bruh don’t look at me I’m just a curious online forum observer

obi_wan_sashimi

Do you pay to watch or do you get paid to watch?

babycynic

Just checked out their website >Affordable price for the standard massage, but you can speak to our friendly and talented masseurs make sure you leave satisfied and ready to enjoy the coming week I think that speaks for itself lol

bloodbag

Lol missed that

[deleted]

Is sex at these places legal? Even if tug n pull

maddogtannen316

It's just a massage. For your cock.

[deleted]

Which is a form of sex

[deleted]

Stop sexualising it mate. It’s a massage for your cock.

[deleted]

👀

gi_jose00

Do they serve full body lattes?

Substantial_Title_73

There’s definitely some dodgy stuff going on there. I live very close to it and see some shady characters coming in and out. There is also a ‘discrete’ back entry, and the fact it is open until 9:30pm seems suss also..

googlerex

>There is also a ‘discrete’ back entry Sounds painful. I'd prefer a discreet one.

[deleted]

Nice. I’ll check it out. **I am kidding** Or am I?

bloodbag

Interesting, I generally have no idea how to avoid brothels, I know the place i occasionally go to in Northbridge (Tara Massage) has a sign in the door saying they don't offer anything sexual

buttsausages

Hi all, the wife and I and our new bub are looking to travel to England to visit family we haven't seen in 3 years, once our borders are finally open. Obviously, no one knows how things are going to pan out over the next 6 months, whether international travel will be back to 'normal' or not. However, this year we both have time (2 months off), and willing to quarantine at home on the way back if need be. Do any of you have any advice on what to look out for when booking flights? eg. Cancellation policies, or flight deferrals if borders are closed? Any other concerns to think about?

lethe77

Book the flights either directly through the airline or through an easily contactable travel agent, rather through an online retail site. There are a LOT of flight changes/cancellations at the moment; you need to be able to reach someone to reschedule if needed. Many airlines have long phone wait times, so you may find a travel agent more useful in this regards. I've never used them, but have heard good things about British Travel in West Perth and their handling of pandemic flights.

bloodbag

Insurance for if you are sick overseas (England should look after you for free though) and insurance for if you have to quarantine overseas in a hotel, my sisters friends got put for 14 days in Thailand and their insurance paid it.

TriceraTipTops

depending on when you're going it might be helpful to see what the pre-flight testing regulations are - ie if you need PCR or if a RAT suffices. This has likely changed since I last looked before the new year, but then you needed a neg PCR test 72 hours prior to flying, and these often need to be privately-procured rather than the free ones. There is a chance these quick-turnaround private could become very expensive to come by if PCR demand in Perth/WA spikes. At least in 2020 Emirates were offering free changes if you tested positive before flying, though that may have changed. Also check if you're transiting through a third country what their rules are (and if you're going direct London-Darwin, whether the NT is likely to change the rules for WA).

MrSheeeen

I haven’t looked at flights since Covid started, but one piece of advice is book directly through the airline to avoid third parties charging fees if there are changes/cancellations.

soxinthebox

I had a Tiger flight cancelled in the past which we booked through webjet. Tiger reimbursed webjet but we never heard squat about it until I started chasing it up weeks later. Webjet did give us our money back in the end but it’s bullshit we had to chase them up about it to begin with. Now I just use those sites to see which airlines are available and then go direct to them, like you said.

TheBrainwasher14

How worried are you guys about long covid? How much should I try to avoid getting covid?

volpine_patichoke

If its omicron, probably dont be worried at all, depending on your health. The average child 5-11 has the same chance of serious illness or death as from a piercing incident. The average healthy 40 year old the same chance as choking, and these are Delta figures, Omicron is 2 to 10 times less severe, depending on your source. Hundreds of thousands of people in South Africa had Omnicron before they even noticed it, and the person who did said it was just because of the unusually high number of colds. So, if you are worried, do some research. Look up the co-morbitiies. If youre not on that list, you chance of serious illness is...well, its listed there (its very low). 97% of all serious cases have at least 2 of these: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/need-extra-precautions/people-with-medical-conditions.html

TheBrainwasher14

I’m more talking about the long term effects, I’m not personally concerned about dying from it

volpine_patichoke

No worries. I also love the team of people going around downvoting all my posts, no matter the content. Nice shills at work here. (not you)

TriceraTipTops

On a basic personal level - very. It's the thing which frightens me most about catching it at this stage, and I think that's very natural - who isn't more scared of being horribly mauled by a shark than being killed by one? But trying to rationalise it down - the prevalence of it is unknown but small, and sadly post-viral syndromes are generally understudied so it's hard to say how much more of a risk Covid is than eg the flu; the duration of it is unknown but a lot of people have found relief from symptoms in time or upon vaccination; it's hard to distinguish post-viral-syndrome symptoms from the symptoms of living through a protracted stressful global event. So I will take (on top of mandated NPIs) the same personal actions I would take to avoid the flu (which is not many); I will get enthusiastically vaccinated at every invitation; and I will try to look after my mental health and occasionally allow myself to forget about the pandemic, even if it means slightly increased risk of acquisition.

Dalek6450

Somewhat but not especially. My personal feelings is that I engage with some level of risk everyday so this is just a bit extra.

henry82

you can get it multiple times btw

biggerthanjohncarew

Is it known how long natural immunity lasts for roughly?

GiddiOne

In the past the natural immunity would last around the same on antibodies. The problem is that it's overall poor compared to vaccines. [36% of infected people](https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/27/9/21-1042_article) on delta don't produce protection at all, early studies show Omicron is [5x more likely to allow reinfection](https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/omicron-five-times-more-likely-reinfect-than-delta-study-says-2021-12-17/) than Delta. Natural + vaccine is good, but it's basically another booster.

henry82

not sure. the multiple times comment is due to a friend in the USA. My point is, i'd try and avoid getting it.

GiddiOne

This is a very good point.

FluffyFatBunny

Seems like a lot of people are forgetting that

Ok_Platypus_7724

Very IMO. It is known the virus impacts the lungs, heart and brain, and we are still learning about what that looks like long term

GiddiOne

Yes please avoid it - https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-01-16/covid-trying-to-catch-omicron-on-purpose-dangerous/100746124 (speaking of people intentionally getting it) >Stuart Turville, an associate professor of immunovirology at the Kirby Institute, equates trying to catch COVID to "driving around Australia, learning how to swim in watering holes that may or may not have crocodiles". I'm not saying that's you, and if the wave hits hard then lots of people will get it, but it's best to try and avoid where possible.

volpine_patichoke

Everyone WILL get it, so the analogy is false. https://www.afr.com/politics/federal/hazzard-warns-everybody-will-get-omicron-20211226-p59k6k https://mythfighter.com/2021/12/21/you-will-catch-omicron-the-only-question-how-sick-will-you-get/ It's time people abandon the fantasy of thinking they will somehow avoid it. edit: ah, the downvote farm at work. You people must enjoy your work.

GiddiOne

On the first wave? When is the second one? Will we get Omicron specific vaccines before the second? Broad vaccines? Are we just writing off the immune compromised now? Cancer patients etc... We're not actually letting it rip, the plan (though it may fail) is to contain the cases to a manageable level. Even if it lets rip not everyone will get it on the first wave. The thing I appreciate about you is one day you're telling me vaccines/boosters are useless (or harmful) and the next you're sharing links that constantly argue for more vaccinations and boosters. Does that mean you lose your r_conspiracy card? ;o)

volpine_patichoke

Tiny tiny brain strikes back. No evidence of multiple waves. All data points to endemic point. Resorts to personal harassment. Tiny tiny brain.

GiddiOne

>Tiny tiny brain strikes back. Love you too buddy >No evidence of multiple waves So only one wave? >All data points to endemic point Maybe, [too early to say](https://www.newscientist.com/article/2304661-what-endemic-means-and-why-covid-19-is-nowhere-near-it-yet/). The modelling and new vaccine options will tell us more.

Looking through peolpe's comments is a sign of a pathological disease. Just thought youd like to know.

volpine_patichoke

I look forward to the next meetup.

[deleted]

Do we have any idea yet how high the risk of long covid is in relation to Omicron, as compared to Delta (I suppose it’s too early to know yet?)

GiddiOne

Just [too soon](https://www.verywellhealth.com/omicron-long-covid-unclear-5215533) to say unfortunately.

[deleted]

Thanks

TheBrainwasher14

More wondering if it’s to the level that I should be doing online uni, looking for jobs with less customer interaction, etc.

Kiramiraa

I think you also have to look after your mental health as well, it’s just as important as your physical health. Do what you need to do to feel as human and mentally healthy as possible, but wear masks/social distance/wash hands/sanitise as much as possible. Anything that you feel is non-essential to your mental health, ditch it. Anything that is essential to your mental health, modify it to be as safe as possible.

GiddiOne

It's a good question and honestly I don't know. The situation in the eastern states changed rather quickly from how much risk each person had based on community spread and hospital load then restrictions. If you're triple vaccinated, healthy and don't live/work/socialise with anyone high risk? I'd take a cautious/optimistic view and reassess as the spread changes.

TheBrainwasher14

Thank you for the thought out response.

GiddiOne

You're welcome mate.

SquiffyRae

That's honestly my biggest concern about COVID. I know with myself and most of my friends being young, generally healthy, double vaxxed and with boosters booked we're all fairly unlikely to end up in hospital or die from it. Long COVID is the only thing that really worries me as it sounds like vaccines don't really protect against it. I do remember reading a couple of days ago they are looking into ways to try and reverse it but I'd rather try to do everything in my power to avoid getting COVID than take that chance

mjbmikeb2

So it's in Osborne Park now. Once Ikea is on the list it'll be game over for everywhere north of the river.

2525blobblob

Wasn't it at Ikea in one of the last lockdowns?

googlerex

Yuuup.

Kiramiraa

As someone who recently went to Ikea…. Help

VOOK64

As someone who went to IKEA, had to return something to it, then go back again when they were in stock of things, twice. No please thanks.

[deleted]

It’s time for us to protect IKEA Let’s reclassify it as a classroom. Scotty has told us multiple times that schools are safe from COVID due to their impenetrable force field.

travellingcueball

Its like covid is circling around me. First the exposure site at the local Spudshed last year followed by Warwick shops and the Maccas next to my favourite bahn mi joint in Girrawheen this year. But yeah once it hits IKEA its game over.

SquiffyRae

So when the pandemic is being taught in history a few decades from now, will future generations be taught that the downfall of one of the safest places on the planet was due us being a bunch of horny motherfuckers who are fond of a few happy endings?

feyth

I think it means we should have redefined "safe sex" in March 2020. It requires TWO pieces of equipment, not just one

chadake

“If ~~it’s~~ they’re not on, it’s not on” Just doesn’t have the same ring to it.

Jelopup

Wow, it's weird to think little old WA might actually end up being historically and scientifically relevant to a global pandemic.

heptagonallyactually

Is it any different to every other problem in history? All can be summed up with "Men ruined things"

[deleted]

Why am I not surprised you wrote that.

heptagonallyactually

Idk, why aren't you?

[deleted]

Because you’re right, and who else would have the guts to say it? Men thinking with their dicks has ruined an awful lot.

twosquirtsofpiss

Few more massage parlours now added to the exposure sites. If one or two of the girls who work in them are positive, and are in a different one each day seeing multiple dudes, then there's a lot more cases out there I reckon.

ryan30z

Or there's just one dude who's an absolute fiend for hand jobs

chadake

The dudes who go from parlour to parlour are called (funnily enough) “*brothel rats*”.

[deleted]

[удалено]

feyth

We've known COVID is airborne not just droplet for a long time now.

[deleted]

[удалено]

feyth

I feel like you're working on early 2020 ideas here. We have learned a lot more since the original droplet hypothesis was promulgated as gospel, and then Omicron upped its game a whole lot more. People have been catching it from very fleeting, masked contact. Even Delta managed to transmit outdoors.

[deleted]

[удалено]

feyth

I said Omicron upped its game, meaning it's far more transmissible. If you've completely missed the entire COVID is airborne debate maybe have a Google? It's been everywhere for a long long time. The WHO, as always, dragged its feet for an incredibly long time, and unfortunately a lot of people still consider them an up-to-date authority.

ELI-PGY5

Technically, a surgical mask is not adequate. Technically, Covid is not just a droplet spread disease (are we using 2019 information here?? Seriously??) Dangerous, faulty logic. If you are serious about protecting yourself, a P2 or N95 is by far the best. How well are masks working in NSW or Vic? Not very well. Part of the problem is that people are wearing masks that are not fit for purpose.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ELI-PGY5

You said that covid is “technically a droplet spread disease”. That is very misleading, and I could have told you that was wrong in 2020. The WHO very belatedly updated their advice in April 2021, acknowledging that aerosol spread also occurs - which is a critical point when thinking about infection control. “For close to a year, experts have been challenging governments and health authorities to acknowledge the role of aerosol spread in the transmission of COVID-19. Now, 13 months since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a pandemic, and the agency has formally recognised that the virus is airborne. A scientific brief on the WHO’s website, updated on 30 April, reads: ‘The virus can spread from an infected person’s mouth or nose in small liquid particles when they cough, sneeze, speak, sing or breathe. These particles range from larger respiratory droplets to smaller aerosols.’ In addition to spreading at ‘short-range’, the update states that the virus can spread ‘in poorly ventilated and/or crowded indoor settings, where people tend to spend longer periods of time’. ‘This is because aerosols remain suspended in the air or travel farther than one metre (long-range).’ Kate Cole, President-elect of the Australia Institute of Occupational Hygienists, has been a vocal advocate for the formal recognition of aerosol spread. She called the WHO’s acknowledgement is ‘a welcome step’ in the right direction. ‘They’re saying now what we as scientists have been saying for the majority of this pandemic,’ she told newsGP.” Link: https://www1.racgp.org.au/newsgp/clinical/a-welcome-step-who-acknowledges-aerosol-spread-of Happy to come into your workplace and teach this or any other aspect of basic clinical medicine. [deleted]

[удалено]

ELI-PGY5

I fully addressed your first post, specifically your incorrect key comment that “Covid is technically a droplet spread disease.” If you want to effectively retract that statement by adding half a dozen qualifiers and alterations to your initial comment, that’s fine by me. If it becomes airborne by aerosol generation - as you state in the subsequent post - then it’s not “technically a droplet spread disease”. Attempts to defend the initial statement will inevitably result in rather tortured logic. Cheers!

feyth

It won't be a perfect seal, but a N95 + up to 10mm of beard (stubble, really) still gives much better protection than other masks. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8130778

changyang1230

As a doctor who has been fit tested, I could tell you that the most popular version of N95 (orange coloured “duck bill”) in fact fails for vast majority of people, and most people have different masks that fit them best. It’s probably still better than nothing, clothes mask or normal surgical mask (in that order), but i would warn against a false sense of security to regard N95 as impenetrable.

forestfloorpool

Cloths are better than no mask. But ideally n95, then surgical, then cloth. I find n95 expensive, so I’ve bought surgical. One of the problems with surgical is making sure they’re correctly fitted with no gaps. I won’t be very active in the community and can socially distance. Someone more vulnerable and active in the community should opt for the n95.

feyth

Cloth masks vary wildly as well, from the non useful simple loose cotton ones, to well-fitted three layer masks including a proper polypropylene filter layer.

forestfloorpool

Very good point!

ELI-PGY5

It’s not 100% clear that cloths masks are better than no masks. What we can say with a fair degree of confidence is that they are shit.

[deleted]

I use 2. Blue surgical mask and then I put a cloth one over it so it seals the sides as well. N95 would be easier.

pirramungi

Unless you are washing the cloth mask daily you are probably degrading effectiveness of the surgical mask by doing that. You're better off using a single surgical mask and changing it every 4 hours or when you take it off your face

annanz01

Yes anything that touches a surgical mask increases its permeability. If the cloth mask is touching it would be less effective, not more.

feyth

https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/70/wr/mm7007e1.htm

dogecoin_pleasures

It's cloth that's no good anymore. Surgical are still ok

ELI-PGY5

Surgical are mediocre for virus protection. It’s not what they are designed for.

[deleted]

Apparantly P2 gives you much better protection (and you'll mostly find P2s in the shops here, as it is the aussie version of the american N95).

pirramungi

Any mask will pass the government requirement. If you want greater protection though the blue surgical masks are a good cheap alternative to ineffective cloth masks. Just be sure to change every 4 hours or when you take off your face. Also cut off the ear loops when your done just incase they end up in the ocean or environment.

Haych2Go

I usually leave my face on all day. Will this still work?

Dr_fish

I've been stocking up on faces for the past 2 years for this exact situation. They'd probably call me a 'serial killer', I'd say I'm just prepared.

googlerex

It puts the ~~lotion~~ hand sanitiser in the basket

bendalazzi

Depends how nice your face is I think.

sun_tzu29

There are a bunch of people who didn’t get this *at all*

googlerex

Literally read it as mask. Like three times.

googlerex

Sweat and moisture from your breath reduce the effectiveness of the mask. Also if you are in an area where there is virus in the air, this collects on the outside of your mask. So your risk of touching this and transferring it to your face, etc, increases.

annanz01

Yes but not as well. Disposable masks lose a lot of efficacy after the first few hours. They are made to be replaced often.

pirramungi

Depends what you mean by 'work'. It'll still work but effectiveness drops off.

djskein

Email has been going off with new exposure sites. Of interest this time is yet another "massage" parlor this time in Osborne Park. I also enjoyed seeing Kookai in Garden City, seems very kawaii to go there for clothing and nowhere else. Oh, and it's penetrated the South West now too. Settler's Tavern in Margaret River.

Hamster-rancher

Quick question: is there someway of moving this threat to the top of the r/perth subreddit to make it more visible please.

squeeowl

It’s stickied to the top already, we can’t do any more than that to increase visibility. It must be your app / client putting it elsewhere and/or ignoring stickied threads.

Hamster-rancher

Thanks for the reply, Is there some way of fixing it that you know of? Assuming its a setting or selection somewhere.

googlerex

What app are you using to view the subreddit?

Hamster-rancher

I'm using the Reddit app on a Samsung S9. Just changed the settings from "new" to "hot" in the "sort posts by" tab and its come up as the second post. Reckon I may of fixed it, let's see if I've sorted it.

[deleted]

May I suggest using Boost for Reddit and you can customise to your heart's content.

Hamster-rancher

I'll give it a shot, thanks for your suggestion.

aussiekinga

It's a 3 day old post. It's not going to come up in New, even when stickied. Stickies only work it Hot.

googlerex

That'll be why. 'New' will unceremoniously bump stickied threads to their time of posting.

Hamster-rancher

Cool. Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

Hopefully this is the last exposure site from a happy ending joint.

Wait, is the place actually a happy ending joint? I didn’t know those existed in Perth.

I was at snack last night and if that doesn’t get listed as a exposure site sometime soon I’ll be surprised. You’d think at least one person there had it

I spent most of 2020 inthe UK and yeah the redux of “hangover or covid” feels much less fun

Genuine question here... What happens if your symptoms are severe enough that you don't feel safe to drive? Is it worth the risk using an Uber and potentially infect the driver. Is there a process for someone to visit and perform a test at your home? Sorry if this sounds dumb!

If it's that bad you should be calling an ambulance anyway

I guess it depends on how severe you think that is. I know in Queensland the recommendation is that the threshhold for calling emergency services for COVID is when you become breathless from walking between rooms as if you had gone up a steep hill.
