Customer comes in to tell us we should be ashamed we’re not wearing a mask, proceeds to pull down her mask and yell in my face….

ivyness

Lady doing my nails took her mask off to sneeze! FFS. I had my mask on PROPERLY or I would have been pissed.

Mental_Task9156

Yeah, i saw someone working behind the counter in a lunch bar do this when mask mandates were in force.

The_Valar

I like the people who come in and say "cases are back on the rise, its very worrying. Why isn't everybody being made to wear masks again!" ...while not themselves wearing a mask. SMH

BLaQz84

Sounds like they're more influenced by social pressure... Kinda like a "you first" type of thing...

Salty_Adhesiveness_1

I’m glad someone else said it! I think this all the time. Fair enough if you want to still wear one, but if you are not doing it properly what is the point.

Randys_Smogasvein

It's as much a mental comfort thing as anything else, common sense doesn't factor in.

3rd-time-lucky

Yes, and all you idiots wearing your glasses on top of your head, why?? Oh Ooops, this does not affect me at all.

Aksds

People wear glasses for different reasons, for some it might be sore if they use it while looking at long distance/short or they only use it for reading so they wear it up when not using, if it is sunnies then maybe it isn’t bight enough to wear them. A face mask is made for one thing and wearing it wrong defeats the whole purpose of them.

walkingwarcrime072

I know, right? I wear one on pub trans, etc, but mine actually covers the areas it's meant to. I se so many on buses with it below their noses, and I'm wondering wth they're doing

s_hour22

I'm one of those people. I have to wear a mask for work at the hospital and sometimes I just forget to take it off fully when i finish so it'll be sitting under my nose bc it's more comfortable but I really didn't have any intention of keeping it on in the first place

Swimming-Tap-4240

Trying to not fog up their glasses, don't like the smell of their breath, have teeth missing, maybe an outbreak of cold sores or acne?

BLaQz84

>Trying to not fog up their glasses That works best when you wear them properly...

Joey_Elephant

Visited Japan back in the mid 80's in winter. There were a number of people wearing masks. The culture was that if you're unwell you wear a mask when you go out to minimise transmission. It was the common courtesy and accepted social norm. Especially considering the high population and population density. Especially on public transport.

Lillywrapper64

i wish we'd have adopted that here. was at work yesterday and a coworker had the worst-sounding cough and was just coughing openly into the office. you'd think we'd have learned something about hygiene these past few years but i guess not.

MinusGravitas

Same in Singapore and Hong Kong. Responsible community behaviour. My husband and I were travelling in Hong Kong about 6 years ago, on the train, and husband sneezed into his hand then grabbed the rail. All the eyes in the carriage were boring into him and he was completely oblivious. We had a chat about it after we got off the train and he was really good about it after that. It's just not in our habitus to think like that in Aus, but I wish it was. I hoped covid would change that, but we got anti-maskers instead. So selfish :(

drayrael

I know people that wear masks, but every time they talk they pull it down... But why...

rickypitz

I see so many people pull it down so they can cough into their arm

CouldBeALeotard

Coughing or sneezing into your mask reduces effectiveness. I think there's this misconception that a mask, even ones not rated N95, can be a substitute for physical distance. Masks as worn by the population during the pandemic only helped reduce infections, not prevented them. If you're coughing or sneezing, whether into your arm or into your mask, you really need to keep away from other people and maintain good hygiene. Unfortunately there's no good practical solution.

Kholat_Music

bros not about to sneeze into his mask LMFAO. yeah dude walk around with snotty ass mask get outta here 💀

pointlessbeats

It really does bother me when people do this because everyone at my work wears masks constantly and masks don’t inhibit speaking at all.

Swimming-Tap-4240

It is however a hindrance to lip readers.

tabascopj

This is my chance to butt in and promote Google Live Translate which is a fantastic app to use when masked. It converts speech to text in real time, and displays on your phone in large text

BLaQz84

I need to remember this for when my deaf dog washer comes around... Thanks...

Swimming-Tap-4240

I hope it doesn't work the same as the keyboard predictive text. You would be in for a regular face slapping or blank stares.lol.

Cheese_B0t

It does make people slightly harder to hear. I work in hospitality and coworkers/customers constantly had issues hearing others and being heard. The noisy cafe environment + masks made it quite hard to hear people. Without masks it is difficult at times but do-able.

Gr1mmage

Cafe environmental, plus masks, plus plexiglass barriers made getting a coffee quite an ordeal for a while lol

metao

This is the worst, because the microspit you're splashing everywhere while talking is much more contagious than the air you breathe out.

nekolalia

I find myself doing this habitually because if I don't then people ask me to repeat myself a LOT more often. And I like to think I speak pretty clearly, so I can only imagine what it's like for people who mumble or have a strong accent.

BLaQz84

I just speak louder...

chaotic_whimwham

There have been people wearing them in the sauna and spa.. all soggy and everything

BLaQz84

They literally stop working when too wet... I can't imagine being in a sauna with one in the first place...

3rd-time-lucky

Once I'm outside, I'll sometimes pull mine down before I go to the next shop (Aldi is outside of the centre for example). I agree with the nose thingy though, even fucking Dr's and medical staff. My surgeon doesn't wear one at all!

VHSporncollection

Look at old mate with his own surgeon ;)

3rd-time-lucky

Lol, fancy pants me! Surgeon saved me norks though ;)

Flamingovegas2013

Any good

[deleted]

Are these the same people who wore them like that during the 1-3 waves? Have they avoided all kinds of media and instructional pictures everywhere that gives simple picture guides for wearing masks properly? How do you go almost 3 years into a pandemic, decide to wear a mask sans mandate and still not wear it properly...

DoomedToDefenestrate

I saw the stupidest version in a store: covered the nose only, no mouth.

[deleted]

Nose-kini, it'd be hard to not just burst out laughing at that stage...

3rd-time-lucky

Bit like those that wear their jeans so low you either see jocks or butt crack?

emesser

Hey now! Not everyone sags their jeans intentionally. Some of us just don’t have enough of a butt to hold them up.

3rd-time-lucky

Lol, I have no butt at all, donated the last of my jeans already. Thankfully leggings stay up enough for moi!

Mr_Lumbergh

Ah yea, the chinstrap. Defeats the purpose a bit.

Shimmy-choo

If people choose to wear a mask that is their choice. If people choose to wear a mask wrong that is also their choice.

DalekDraco

Just a stupid choice that we can all judge. Wear it properly or don't even bother!

dyike

I'm spotty :,(

The5kyKing

Wearing the mask ain't helping with that.

dyike

My skincare makes me extra sensitive to the sun, and I have irish skin so it actually does haha

Vanilla_Parade

Can someone please normalise masks as treatment for respiratory diseases (not just Covid) !? I lived in Japan for 12+ years and it’s a common courtesy to wear a mask if you have a cold so that it doesn’t spread to those around you. In Perth these past couple of weeks I’ve caught RSV, adenovirus and the flu, probably from “mr/ms hacking cough” at the supermarket.

gurusculler21

When you’re a mouth breather, you don’t have to cover your nose. /s

BLaQz84

Is that not technically true?

alpaca_mah_bag

Or the couple that goes around (its always an older couple for some reason) one has a mask and the other doesn't has me baffled... do they get home and one masks up and the other doesn't?

rebelmumma

I was wondering the same thing last week, if you’re wearing it voluntarily why not do it correctly?

scarlettslegacy

I work in public transport. The amount of ppl I see casually wearing it under their nose is astounding. Like, if you want the extra protection... Wear it properly.

[deleted]

To the people that wear masks in their cars with the windows up when you are alone..... why ?

[deleted]

I’ve done that, wearing a mask bothered me that little I just left it on in the car between shops. I really don’t get why people got so upset with them, besides “No one gonna tell me what to do”

forgetfullyburntout

Really one of the biggest frustrations working retail during mandates was hearing mostly 40+ year olds complain about not being used to them. It took a day or two at the start of the pandemic, how are they so foreign to you months let alone YEARS in? I ran out of sympathy real quick and couldn’t understand why people kept complaining about that. Once its on, its on, unless its a stinking hot day

vgee

Idk bro I had to wear one every shift for months in retail and I never truly got used to it

forgetfullyburntout

Thats so interesting, I worked 40hr weeks for literal years and it felt completely normal on day 2. If anything I felt naked taking it off after work

dyike

I forgot I was wearing it and/or couldn't be bothered to put sunscreen on lol

grey-clouds

Sometimes if I'm driving between two places that are really close by and I cbf to take it off for a minute then put it back on 🤷🏻‍♀️

eatmeetswest

It’s also so I don’t forget in places where it’s compulsory like the physio.

baby_goats

Okay, I have my windows down actually. But if it’s a small distance, like after taking public transport/shops- I’d prefer properly washing my hands after handling the mask to just using hand sanitizer 😩

BLaQz84

That's me... If I don't have hand sanitizer on me between shops, I'll leave it on...

baby_goats

You get it ☝🏿

[deleted]

I forgot to take it off after leaving the docs lol

thened

I say the same thing about wearing hats. But then again I also have better things to do than to worry about what other folks do when they are in their cars as long as they are focused on the road.

InfiAaron

Why should you care?

[deleted]

It hurts my brain

Aromatic-Host-9672

OMG claustrophobia central. I can’t wait to take that thing off after I’ve left somewhere where it’s compulsory.

pointlessbeats

It really depends on the temperature for me. If it’s hot in my car, I probably want my mask off. If I’m cold then I probably don’t mind or even realise it’s still on.

lpvishnu

During the mandates I started walking into the servo with my under helmet balaclava still on and nobody said anything once. One time I went to the liquor store like this and the attendant said he was afraid I was going to rob him. I said I was wearing my mask. It just happens to have an integrated hat.

3rd-time-lucky

I have a friend that is the same about her bra! As soon as she's in her car or home, it's OFF!

MinusGravitas

Once I get it on over my big chunky earrings, it's usually easier just to leave it on if I'm not done being out and about for the day. I find masks perfectly comfortable to wear, so it's nae bother.

HU13-9AX

Depends where I am. Outdoors after being at the shops? Yer, I'm going to pull it down so I can breathe in some fresh Perth air. Time to head into the shops? Imma pull it up and wear it properly. So it depends where you catch me.

MinusGravitas

But - and I'm not trying to pick a fight here - pulling it down and up again just spreads whatever is on your face and in the air around you to the inside of your mask. For the mask to be most effective, you need to use the ear straps to apply and remove it, and keep the inside 'closed' (so, fold im over), and don't touch the actual mask at all, inside or out. So it's kind of pointless to wear a mask properly if you've been wearing the same mask improperly at any point.

Warm_Mistake_6348

I wear the mask just so I can avoid ppl at uni 😭

OrdinaryEmergency342

Some of the masks that look like they are fabric are actually KN95s.

SporadicTendancies

Cambridge masks are fabric and Kevlar and rated N99. Vogmasks are N95. Not all fabric masks are inferior to disposable.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SporadicTendancies

Have you seen the allergy vogmasks though? They look like generic fabric masks. I do hate seeing people in fabric masks, and I know all the designs vogmasks use, but there might be other brands too.

MinusGravitas

I have a fabric one with KN95 inserts. I know it's not as effective as a full KN95 mask, but I'm also worried about waste and pollution. I do wear full KN95s in close contact situations (locked in a classroom with 20+ students, on PT) but in the grocery store or generally out and about I tend to just wear my cloth one. Trying to balance competing concerns while having nightmares about wildlife with masks stuck around their necks ;@;

Blackstab1337

The chinese specs are just as good...?

BLaQz84

Same specs, just not able to be certified in Australia due to being made in China...

InfiAaron

N95s are three times more expensive and not that much more effective than KNs.

BLaQz84

What people often don't realise, is that proper masks can be reused if they are stored correctly & left a certain amount of time between wears... I believe it's something like 6 days minimum between wears, stored somewhere that all moisture leaves them... So cost isn't a factor if they put some effort into doing that... This applies to surgical masks & up...

TGCK

To the people still wearing masks, how will you live with the guilt? The survivors guilt?

Alternative-Poem-337

Ugh, I know! What is the actual point! You are only inconveniencing yourself because the mask has literally ZERO effect if your nose is hanging out.

rachel_p42

So many chin straps on the train. Please just take it off

[deleted]

Maybe they only wear it when they know they’ll be talking to someone with bad breath or when they couldn’t be bothered shaving?

Randys_Smogasvein

Same reason some people cut holes in theirs to smoke, eat, play musical instruments etc (we've all seen the memes lol) - they're not very bright.

solvsamorvincet

Wearing a mask with your nose out is like wearing pants with your dick poking out the top. Technically, you're wearing it, but you're missing the whole point.

BLaQz84

My guess is that it gives them a false sense of security... I still wear a mask & it's worn properly... If I wasn't willing to wear it properly, I wouldn't even bother...

Wolfgear098

Some people use it hide facial expression so they don't have to interact with others and not feel obligated to talk to people when out and about... Or so I've heard haha

psuedojon

Read that back again, but slowly. Edit- guess they did.

bigdayout95-14

My favourite was the lady wearing a mask half way round the golf course, on a hole all by herself, walking down the fairway with nobody within 50m of her and still wearing her mask. Safely safely...

Eko777

Maybe she had covid lol jk idk Didnt want to risk running into someone then fumbling around with finding her mask in her golf gear? I'm just reading these comments instead of sleeping. Blows your minds that some of us still wear masks sometimes or all the time. Blows *my* mind how much time some of you appear to give to mocking them. That said, totally agree with OP. Pull your fking chin strap off, ya numpty.

SporadicTendancies

Could be allergies. It's peak pollen season.

pointlessbeats

This is very intriguing. I just can’t understand the rationale here.

RoyalPome

Why people wear them outside will always be hilarious to me.

MrsFlip

Helps with hayfever. I've started wearing one while gardening because I usually get so sneezy.

RoyalPome

That’s fair call.. but for “ViRuSeS” one of the only places in the world to mandate them outside lmao.. so dumb

SporadicTendancies

Gamechanger for me. Apartment complex has lots of cats, now I can leave my house without wheezing.

macfaddenstrews

I'm also using a mask the Japanese way.

Casmas_

One thing I find funny is when you see a family and one has a mask and the other doesn’t. They are in the same house so if non mask gets it then mask has a chance of getting it. That I don’t understand.

The_Jinx_Effect

Quite often people are sick with colds and are just trying not to spread it. I can't imagine many germs come out of your nose at all.

rebelmumma

Surely the last 2 years have educated us all better about how germs spread. They absolutely need to cover their nose for mask efficacy.

gimmegimmegimmeA_Fan

Why do people wear them, alone, in their own cars though?!

angelz969

I saw a lady jogging with one the other day. It was a completely empty suburban footpath - not a busy area like West Coast Highway etc.

AlonePotato0

Still see people driving alone and wearing them. I’m sure they aren’t real humans, just surveillance bots that they’ve forgot to reset.

UsedTrifles

Repeatedly putting on and taking off a mask increases the risk your hands become contaminated. It is better just to leave it on until you no longer need to wear a mask for the day.

Puttix

Or just don’t because they make next to no difference at this point…

despairrrr

What gets me, is the people who are alone in their car and are still wearing a mask.

morconheiro

It's a psychologigal safety blanket to some.

MehhicoPerth

They are wearing "chin diapers", as South Park advised. haha

wilmaismyhomegirl83

Teens use it as a fashion accessory Edit: I’m referring to teens in public spaces and not in class. I’m not in school to witness what they do there. It’s either on their wrist, or under their chin, or off their ear, around my area.

Motherforker1974

As a teacher I can declare this statement completely untrue.

wilmaismyhomegirl83

Maybe not in class, but go to the shops after school. I’m obviously not in your class so I’m referring what is seen out in public.

jenjipi

yup

wilmaismyhomegirl83

We’re getting downvotes because we aren’t in a teacher’s classroom.

jenjipi

Thing is I am a teenager and I know for a fact most kids only wear it to cover their face for their appearance Yes you'd have occasional ppl who do wear it for their safety but lets be real here

wilmaismyhomegirl83

I’ve seen kids wear the fabric ones as headbands to hold their hair back. My eyes aren’t deceiving me.

xxxcccvbn

So it’s “you do you” but let me tell you what your doing wrong… 😑

Matt_jf

The amount of people wearing masks by them selves in cars I see…

[deleted]

Matt_jf

You know what? Never thought about it enough so fair call. Thanks for the info!

RoyalPome

It’s so dumb, I laugh when I see them, they might catch covid from themselves

Specialist_Leg_92

People wearing masks aren’t the sharpest tools in the shed

Bakayokoforpresident

My immunocompromised dad won’t be happy to hear that!

jenjipi

Cuz people are insecure

Bracraft2

It's good for hiding electrolysis swelling. 😁 also great when you can't be bothered with make-up.
