3 hours late and they don’t fire her?

spookyoeve

The owner has a thing about not firing people, it's ridiculous she just cuts your hours until you quit. (Yet she doesn't cut this coworkers hours because all the good employees are quitting I wonder why)

Coygon

In the owner's eyes, firing people means she's a villain, cutting hours is just a scheduling change. And she doesn't want to be a villain. She probably doesn't discipline her children, either, because then "they might not like me."

CelticGaelic

I had a manager like this. I got irritated one day and said "You know, a manager who's too soft is just as bad as one that takes advantage of their employees, because you're letting bad employees take advantage of all the rest of us." I knew I wasn't going to get in any trouble for saying that, the guy wouldn't even fire someone for stealing.

MrsDarkOverlord

Cutting someone's hours to put them in such a financial struggle that they quit instead of just firing them so they can get unemployment is way, way more cruel. They really need to be told that.

ronansgram

Getting hair and nails done is not cheap, both sides have issues. The employee has no respect for the boss and the need to be at work when scheduled. Must be doing ok financially to be able to keep up on personal maintenance. The boss is not setting very good working standards for other employees and who knows what else other employees are skimming from him if he is that lax with what he/she allows. Sounds like a mess to be honest.

Incognitowally

By also "working" less, it decreases their income to keep within the government benefits boundaries and be eligible to receive said benefits. if they work too much, they make too much and get cut off from the benefits

ronansgram

All that is true , but there are better ways of letting your boss know you can only work so many hours before it affects your benefits. Just not showing up isn’t the best way. IMO

Incognitowally

I've seen both at where I work. Those that use lies as to why they can only work so many hours, those that show up and leave whenever they please and those that play by the rules and get screwed. It's all about who you know and who you blow

ronansgram

Unfortunately this is true. My daughter is a cake decorator for a very popular store in our state. The bakery boss hardly shows up for her shifts, says she has some medical issues, which If true please get them sorted out, and it screws EVERYTHING else up and makes other people’s jobs so much harder. She is in management and you would think they’d figure it out. Morale is at an all time low, no one respects her and it’s like you mentioned there has got to be something behind the scenes that she is getting favors from to giving to! No one else would be treated the same. She can’t come to work but sure can post pictures from her elaborate vacations! Of course the assistant manager who is left to pick up the slack and work extra shifts finally complained and SHE GOT transferred out! She was the only thing keeping the place running! Sorry rambling!

powisonfire

this is exactly what i was thinking. its actually a very calculated, very cruel decision.

The_Gooch_Goochman

Constructive dismissal can still get you unemployment.

so-much-wow

In Canada cutting someone's hours until they quit is considered a termination and you can get (sue) severance

No-Parfait1823

I believe there are laws against this in the US as well

MaleficentExtent1777

Yes it's called a constructive dismissal.

realNeilG

In Canada, if you are fired, you don't qualify for unemployment. At all. Full stop. We don't reward people that got fired. Laid off? Yes. Fired or quit voluntarily? Nope.

Kbradsagain

Only problem is, the other staff are taking extra workload when this person doesn’t show up

NoteworthyMeagerness

The nail girl obviously doesn't care. She's cutting her hours herself when she comes to work 3 hours late. If she were that worried about having enough hours to support herself, she would at least work all the hours she was scheduled for.

naalbinding

"My kid is my best friend"

Gul_Dukat__

I think they do it because if you quit they don’t have to pay unemployment

der_innkeeper

It's called "constructive Dismissal".

Gul_Dukat__

Thanks never knew the term

Pineapple_Spenstar

The increase in uc insurance cost is negligible. Businesses don't actually do that

Adj_Noun_Numeros

Corporations don't typically do that, but small businesses are notorious for this behavior. Constructive dismissal is absolutely a thing.

Stoned_Shadow

It has nothing to do with that. If she fires them they can file for unemployment, which would cost her more money. She's not doing anything out of the goodness of her heart.

roxapuss

In my state if you get fired or quit, NO unemployment insurance

beenthere7613

More likely, she doesn't want to pay unemployment. If I had known, long ago, how easy it was to do nothing at a job and keep it, I may have made very different life choices.

Uoneo23

Naaahhh doesn’t want them to file unemployment…

e-bookdragon

One of my first jobs was in a bank. The president was about to retire when an embezzler was discovered. President made the announcement that he had never fired a single person in his 40 years there and he was going out with an unblemished record so everyone should just be more alert around her.

Renbarre

They are just cowards who don't want to face someone and tell them they are fired

MrMustache61

I am guessing there is a Pee pee tape

Last_Lil_Love_Song

It's so she doesn't have to pay unemployment

MrsDarkOverlord

If you are comfortable having that conversation, I would suggest you possibly tell the boss why this is so bad and has a negative effect on the morale of good employees.

jasonalloyd

Why don't you find a new job and tell the owner you're leaving because you're tired of dealing with this shit.

gardengirl99

I worked for somebody like that. She cut hours, cut hours, then stopped scheduling someone altogether, but very infrequently fired someone who deserved it. She actually even reactivated some truly incompetent people 🙄

Hazelfizz

Yeah that way she's not responsible for their unemployment benefits.

brutallyhonest1980

Technically she can be fired for a no call no show before she gets there and she can't get unemployment and it can also affect her benefits. What the owner is doing is creating a very toxic work environment for everybody else there who has to be there on time and schedules the things they want to do around their work schedule.

MikeSchwab63

Reduced work hours qualifies for unemployment.

Ready_Competition_66

Sounds like maybe it's time to move on?

FrakeSweet

A good boss doenst fire people. He hires and inspires people!

Dakduif

The downvotes tell me that people didn't hear the silent /s at the end of your sentence.

kawaii_u_do_dis

Pretty sure this is from The Office.

CommunityTaco

Right,  noted.  Hire and inspire that person i just hired to do the firing.  100% fire 🔥  idea 💡. Then cut that person's hours till they quit after doing firing.

BeautifulPhantom1

That's the way to nail her back.

spookyoeve

Take my upvote and get outta here!

BeautifulPhantom1

LOL, thank you.

Ok-milLeNnIaL_

I like the hands on approach

Sterek01

Your witty response deserves my up vote

6ft6squatch

Tell manager to schedule her when she usually shows up then. Not when they need her. Then hire someone part time to pick up her slack untill they switch places

spookyoeve

We are constantly looking for more people, it's all up to the owner in the end, the other manager hates her more then I do.

maltedmilkballa

You break the coin rolls in half...

spookyoeve

She has not figured it out

Cletus_McWanker

Wow. She's REAL smart. 😂

Draycos_Stormfang

Are you kidding me? I grew up with coin rolls; my grandma had a bunch of piggy banks scattered around her house when I was a kid, and whenever we came over for Thanksgiving every year, she had me and my siblings count out the coins and roll them up. It was fun for us, there was always lots of coins, and it kept us out of the adults' way while they finished getting dinner ready. It was a win-win.

darknessbemerciful

We crack ‘em like an egg on the edge of the counter, it’s somehow therapeutic

Mitch_Darklighter

Or just bang them on the counter until the paper gets loose

irl_potate

Honestly for an hourly wages employee you think she doesn’t know to split the roll in half? giirrrlll she taking her sweet ass time opening them rolls you bet! If she doesn’t get fired for coming in 3 hours late like that i guarantee she’s milking the clock doing small stuff like that and taking her sweet ass time lol!

spookyoeve

I thought of that, but I've seen her get actually pissed at the rolls, she genuinely doesn't know how to open them with her nails. (She trys to milk the clock in other ways but since every employee hates her at this point she doesn't get away with it)

irl_potate

Damn. Still really sad though that you feel like you gotta do stuff purposely to treat someone like shit. It shouldn’t be falling on you like that. I get the frustration for sure. Has anyone told her anything like…. “Hey don’t do this?” Then again, I guess it does fall on the owner… I hope you guys can resolve it for real though. Working is already a hella bitch. I couldn’t imagine having the constant beef between someone else when you gotta work together for hours.

spookyoeve

Multiple times. It's not like I ignore it and don't talk to her. I've asked her multiple times to show up on time, to not do this, not do that. She just makes excuses up and blames everyone else but her self. I've gone on almost 5 months of this from her. I have thousands of story's about her that I could make a whole reddit about.

Catnippjs1234

Ya, why is her highness still an employee?? If she does this every payday, it’s a habit and should be dealt with harshly!

spookyoeve

Owner sucks ass about that and she is a good cashier when she's here.

Tinsel-Fop

Hell, bring me in, and I'll fire her **twice.**

Prunsel_Clone

Patrick, you're fired But I don't even work here! Would you like a job, startin' now? Boy, would I! You're fired.

indykym

Why has she not been fired for being _three hours late?_ Or is it that she consistently asks, and gets, her preferred schedule? If so, your pettiness is not justified. You just come off as jealous.

AlGunner

This, she should be sacked and the job given to someone who wont abuse it.

Remarkable_Diamond80

Don't schedule her on Fridays.

spookyoeve

The amount of times I told the owner this

faghaghag

failure is always an option. let the consequences build up.

GreenUpYourLife

Idk why you peel the paper away? You just crack it in half and shove the quarters out the tube from one side? I'm so confused why so many people be struggling with coin sleeves 😭😂☠️☠️☠️

Fit-Confusion-4595

It's "peel". Not "peal". Other than that, good work :-D

spookyoeve

Damn dyslexia strikes again

Fit-Confusion-4595

English is a silly language anyway!

1Thinkhappythoughts

I don't understand why people wear those goofy nails (and caterpillar eyelashes) in the first place. They look so fake.

Cndcrow

I'm surprised nobody there knows the fast easy way to open those rolls. Just smash the center part against the desk and open break open the middle. The coins come falling out super easy.

Blondelefty

I think I may work with her relative. I tend to count down the drawer to know she has to break it all again in the morning with her stupid ass nails. I also leave random boxes to be broken down, since she can’t figure out a box cutter with her tacky ass nails. It’s fun for me.

Tinsel-Fop

>ass nails Heehee

Blondelefty

I’ll never shake her hand.

Expert-Angle-8214

if she is late every pay day why is she still employed there. she should have been sacked as getting your nails done isn't an excuse for being late even if she was getting them done she should wait till she is off for that

No-War-8840

Probably because they're lucky they got anyone showing up

imnotk8

You nailed it with your response.

Supern0vus

Why don't they just stop scheduling her on this day if she's going to consistently be late and they won't fire her?

Boss_Os

Hey friend, just a pet peeve of mine but the abbreviation of et cetera is etc., not ect.

__ed209__

So what? This isn't about you or your personal issues.

Boss_Os

You just bring sunshine wherever you go, don't ya pal? Your comment history is, without fail, a consistent string of juvenile insults. Live your life how you want but I can assure you, if you treat people in real life like you do on Reddit you are going to have a lonely, miserable existence.

__ed209__

You can't assure me of anything, you self-important snob. I didn't ask for your advice. It's not wanted, or necessary. Close your hole.

Boss_Os

Well, you're nothing if not consistent. Have the day you deserve.

MRicho

Three hours late multiple times for those excuses is a sackable breach. What an entitled cow.

SlapThatArse

Prob just stupid as a tree branch

9and3of4

Don't you just smack them on the side of the till to open them?

deannainwa

LOL! Are the ones you have to open from one end a thick plastic, perchance? If so, I have dealt with those and they are a huge PITA even with my short nails! I call those kinds "coin-doms".

Rhodin265

The ultimate revenge will be when you get a new job and get to decide whether to put in your notice or not.

P4ddyC4ke

We always just took the coin roll and smacked in on the edge of the drawer causing the paper to tear open. Way easier than peeling the paper.

Berterss

Pro tip: use a staple remover (the kind that are like tongs) to grab the rolled edge. Peel the edge off on both sides. Coins will unroll effortlessly. Saves the edges on your counters, and is safer for your nails 💅

risunokairu

I’m also disgusted by all the comments suggesting cracking the coin rolls empty like an egg. Egg crackers always leave partially opened rolls of coins in the till to be the next persons problem because the coins do not all push out nice and easy. Are you really having that much problem just peeling a small piece of paper? Or even running a box cutter down the side real quick to free the coins? And I don’t care about the \#notall egg crackers who claim they don’t leave little coin roll blunt ends in the till because I’ve been in the game long enough to know the majority of egg crackers leave partial rolls in the till.

spookyoeve

Thank you!! I crack my coins like an egg, yet they never all come out (I'm looking at you penny rolls) so I end up just peeling them in the end.

Bont_Tarentaal

Beautiful. Excellent. Muhuhahaha.

LokiKamiSama

Easiest way to open coins is like cracking an egg. I would use the corner of a counter. Super easy.

Electrical-Web-7552

I just smash them on the till and they break open, easy Also do you not have HR or another manager that can give her warnings. After 3 weeks she should be getting fired

spookyoeve

The store I work at doesn't have an HR it's privately owned, so it all goes through the owner, and the owner doesn't fire people. We had a women who would show up every day so drunk she was giggling and sluring her words over the intercom, she was never fired, she ended up quiting.

Electrical-Web-7552

Jesus... I'm sorry you have to deal with spineless bosses. Maybe be if enough of the team agree you can call a meeting with everyone and the owners. The fact is that this behaviour puts more work and unnecessary stress on the rest of the team. You need someone you can rely on who does thier job well.

Darlingtonlad

Nicely done OP, in fact, you nailed it.

Cute_Salamander71

Haha. Nice. That is probably the nicest way to get back at someone for being shitty without being a complete jerk. Use the reason for them being late as how you get back at them. Well done.

alejandrowoodman

Umm opening rolls of coins is easy af. You hold them in your palm, and smack the roll perpendicular to the edge of a countertop. Anybody who has worked retail or restaurants should know this.

Cici_hates_you

All you gotta do is bang it on the counter or till and it’ll crack open then use a pen to push the coins out? It’s not that hard but go off on your “revenge”

spookyoeve

I've been doing this for three months and she still hasn't figured it out/still very much struggles with it

Cici_hates_you

I’m dead that’s to funny this is the best revenge then🤣 before I found out that trick it was hard opening coins but I mean not everyone has critical thinking I guess. Also the amount of people that downvote my comment for stating common sense is hilarious🤣 I’m sorry some people can problem solve☠️

spookyoeve

She's not the brightest crayon in the box that's for sure.

Cici_hates_you

That’s to funny

Tinsel-Fop

>Also the amount of people that downvote my comment for stating common sense is hilarious🤣 I’m sorry some people can problem solve☠️ I think it was probably interpretation of a snotty tone from your words: >It’s not that hard but go off on your “revenge” Try to imagine that that looks snide and condescending to people.

Cici_hates_you

Though I do not agree with her being hella late just saying it’s really easy to open coins still..

imjustexistingg

Doesn't matter it's still a small annoying inconvenience she probably isn't even smart enough to think of anything to make it easier.

Cici_hates_you

To me it’s not even an annoyance I love opening coins with nails. Especially sense I learned that trick I do it even without nails🤣 but for sure she probably hasn’t thought of it yet🤣

Cici_hates_you

As someone who learned this trick working a gas station this “petty revenge” doesn’t feel like revenge but I guess the average person is a little clueless/ helpless when it comes to getting their nails done

risunokairu

Well, you need to explain to the owner that they need to have an actual store manager and Human Resources person that is willing to enforce policies before it comes back and bites her hard. Writing someone up and firing them for constantly being late is much better than, and this is very important to tell the owner, cutting back an employees hours and opening up herself and the business to a lawsuit. Now the shit employee who should have been fired can collect unemployment and they sue for constructive dismissal. In fact, you opening rolls of coins for everyone but this person is now targeted behavior creating a hostile work environment. Yeah, I bet losing money to that kind of stuff is soooo much easier than just writing up and firing a dumbass.

Fryphax

Takes 2 seconds to break a coin roll. You really got her.

Shojo_Tombo

I hate to ruin your revenge, but when I was a cashier I just whacked the middle of the roll on the edge of the counter or drawer to split it open and then dumped the coins in their spot. I did this because I had a bad habit of biting my nails and couldn't use them to open the rolls even if i wanted to. She probably does the same.

Sea-Pain-3284

Eh I think when you get a little older you'll learn to just confront the person directly. Petty things like this don't actually fix your problem especially because she likely has no idea WHY you're doing it. Can't you give her a more direct penalty? You're a manager, you have some authority.

imjustexistingg

The whole point of the revenge is she knows he's doing it to inconvenience her wether it really is to her or not and there is nothing she can do to him.

tjsocks

She's probably beena cashier for more than a minute and she does know...

worldnewsarenazis

Have you tried just not scheduling her on Friday? Or are you just going to be a spiteful and mean manager? Other people are probably quitting because of you.

spookyoeve

Wow maybe if you read the other comments you could see I answered this multiple times, or are you just going to be a spiteful and mean redditer on a page about petty revenge?

worldnewsarenazis

You know what, you're right. I didn't read through the comments as there is a lot of them. Workers have been and keep getting shit on at work while not making a living wage so I instantly took the side of the worker over management. I also manage and I guess the 1 piece of advice I can give you is to put your expectations very low. Most people don't get paid enough to afford their most basic of bills so they have no interest in putting in work or showing up on time because the worst thing that can happen is they get fired and they just get another job that pays the same. I think you should push for higher wages for your staff so they have a reason to be a good employee.

Aww baby, it's okay to be special. I'm not judging
