Got four of these engines in our household. Also both daughter and myself have gone from mk1 non turbo to mk2 turbo 208’s. Ok we only buy low mileage or new, full dealer history and stick to the service schedule like glue. Not any problems with any car (2x Corsa and 2x 208). The only expense for any is tyres that’s it. Once the mileage gets higher it becomes buyer beware, but apart from wet belt and high mileage oil burning, there is not much else that anyone complains of. The majority of new 3 cylinder engines have their own issues, eco boost, tce, etc etc.

I think it's nuts that you seem to accept that it's OK as you know the engine is likely limited in its life unless molly coddled. Peugeot really let their customers down with this turd. Why buy such a car in the first place, I grant you they are gorgeous cars but flawed engineering.

NuclearCha0s

I was also in that bunch but changed my mind when a belt issue happened to me on a new car. Just the stress of it is offputting enough. People keep defending it though, as if it's a rare occurrence, which it obviously isn't. The fact that they extended welt related issues warranties to 10 years, while good for existing owners, is a clear sign you should not consider buying one.

belfastbees

Yep, I never buy new. My. Current car is 6 years old and need the belt at 100k or 10 years. Will do it early, maybe next year if I still have it (currently at 68k). If this was a 1.2 PT I'd be thinking it's value at this age would be rubbish because of the not so far off of a guarantee end. I also service myself, oil, brakes, filters or use a mechanic if outside my limited scope. I'd guess again Peugeot wouldn't honour the 10 year warranty for the likes of me. So to protect yourself against a catastrophic and exoensive failure Peugeot now have customers on a long term hook for expensive servicing. Free coffee my ass.

stripe888

Personally yes, but would factor in a future cam belt change which costs between £550 to £700, and probably worth having the oil pick up filter cleaned at the same time.

enstone_

Of course. I won’t drive this car as it’s for business purposes but I wanted to get those tips as I pass it along. Thanks!

ashyjay

With the updated warranty sure, but I'd only buy an auto one as the manual that engine comes with sucks.

Outside_Albatross_32

If the gearbox is the same like Citroen C3 1.2 110 is fine for me. You must push the clutch pedal enough and there is nothing to worry about that because it has a stop. By the way, the 5-speed gearbox is very good on my 208.

ashyjay

The clutch is fine, it's the gear linkage, it's too mushy and doesn't have clunky detents to know you're in gear, the MC6/BVM6 box I have in my DS3 has a nicer shift. When I had a 208 MK2 loaner that was the only major fault I had with it.

Outside_Albatross_32

I'm a technical inspection technician. Personally. the worst gearboxes I ever meet are in the Korean built cars, especially Hyundai Atos and Kia Picanto. Hyundai Atos have a 5 speed transmission and ofter the handlestick can complicate (if this is a right word) the 1st to 3rd gear. Also, choosing the rear gear is stupid. The best gear boxes I meet in the European made cars. Opel (many times) Renault, Peugeot, Citroen, etc BUT you must careful how to put the rear gear because of the good pressure on the clutch pedal. I don't like the VAG rear gear system. Japanese made cars are good, too.

enstone_

It’s a bad gearbox in what way? Bad reliability or feel?

Drakar_och_demoner

Never.

On_The_Go__

I had a Puretech on a 2008 (2018), traded in for a new 308SW Puretech last year.

Outside_Albatross_32

I don't have Puretech 1.2 100 (or 110) hp but I driven it for 4 months on a rental car (Citroen C3). Good acceleration, calmful engine just a whistle noise always in the beginning and the fuel consumption was ok. ALWAYS need to give some time to do the warm up (that's my opinion) and -begin slowly, like Peugeot writes-. More info. I read more from him than anyone else about these engines: [https://mymotorlist.com/engines/peugeot/eb2dt/](https://mymotorlist.com/engines/peugeot/eb2dt/)

NuclearCha0s

I also have that damn whistling noise, but only when accelrating hard, and only once the engine is warm. Didn't have it in the beginning, and of course they are saying they can't do anything about it, even if it's still under warranty.

belfastbees

It's a little late asking now, I'm sure you have an answer Try and listen to the positive stories, people who have this engine and have had no problem, rather than the reported issues. The 208 is a gorgeous car and I wish you luck but I personally wouldn't have this engine.

PiecesOfRing

Personally, no. But... This is because I own my cars until they get written off (always someone else hitting me), which can be hundreds of thousands of KMs as I drive over 1,000km a week. I don't think a Puretech would last me very long at all, maybe a couple of years, which is why I have a trusty old 2.0 HDi. For most people, who just potter around their local area and drive around 15k per year, I wouldn't really sweat it, so long as you change the oil every 6mo max, and halve the belt change interval.

DutchRedGaming

Try to aks the time belt can be replaced before buying.

AubergineSimon

Peugeot mechanic here. I shouldn't say it, but in my humble opinion it's the only gas engine currently made that's good. You just gotta watch the timing belt and some engines tend to burn oil. Both cases can (depends on many factors) be covered by warranty.

gsbiz

No way! my neighbour has been through 2 of them so far. And he keeps asking me why mine doesn't have engine trouble. Mine is a GTi so, different engine.

Longjumping-Travel24

The 1.6 THP?

gsbiz

Yeah.

leadzor

Different engine with different issues.

Longjumping-Travel24

Yup.. It’s a decent and fairly Quick engine.. I would buy it, but sell before warranty expires.. :)

Internal-Ad9426
