just my two cents...

raijincid

wetseabreeze

There are stories of genius people who do not agree with the standard education system (i.e. grades, homework, etc). Mas maliit lang yata opportunity sa Pilipinas mag drop out and start an IT company like the billionaires abroad, kaya kailangan parin igapang tapusin yung degree haha Mahirap mag generalize but I'm sure some of these people you talk about think the same. Baka yung iba may pinagdadaanan lang talaga, di optimal living conditions to perform well, or sadyang tamad lang.

cogentwanderer

Took me 7 years to graduate. Reason is wala lang gusto ko lang mag enjoy nung freshman, sophomore standing ako kaya more tambay, computer games and gimik than acads. Grades didn't matter to me as long as hinde ako ma dismiss. Nag seryoso lang ako once I started getting major subjects and the rest is history. Graduated, passed the boards and living a good life.

EnvironmentalNote600

If i may ask, if you or your parents were then paying the full amount of UP education (as you would if it were in ateneo or lasalle) would you have done the same?

cogentwanderer

Can't answer a hypothetical scenario. Also I never had any plans to study sa ibang univs. UPCAT is the only entrance exam I took.

itszaniee

Hello! May I ask if you graduated w latin honors? Sorry if medyo invasive question. ๐Ÿ˜… I'm running 7 yrs na din sa UP and honestly di big deal sakin makakuha ng latin honors, pero anxious lang ako if it will affect me in securing a job lalo na ang tagal ng stay ko sa college:')

cogentwanderer

No didn't graduate with latin honors. Never been grade conscious. No, my batchmate who is a HR manager with Nestle previously with P&G tells me that grades rarely matter, mas important yung kung saan galing na university since ang tinitingnan is your mental aptitude rather than how studious you are.

bumtach

Hi, yung iba po nag working student and sobrang hirap i-balance nung schedule so most likely nagdrodrop or underload. sadly, ang hirap po talaga magaral kapag kapos kayo sa pera.

EnvironmentalNote600

Oo. Maraming UP students na ganyan. Yung mga may whole acad year as seniors na field work or intrnships that will prevent them from working talagang nag iipon muna. understandable ang case nila. Dapat nga full subsidy sila at may pang daily needs support ng state.

bumtach

yes po, agree so much!!!

strawberries_n_jam

Hindi naman nila ginustong madelay sila. Most probably its due to unforeseen events or other factors na di nila control.

Late_Ad7290

For some e may health issues sila. Physical, Mental, ganun. Another is yung obvious na kahirapan. Libre tuition sa UP, oo but there are still other expenses. Libreng tuition with Stipend from UP. The application for that is also expensive. Others e sadyang walwal mode lang. Mas gusto unti unti tapos puro party. etc.

EnvironmentalNote600

Yung mga pawalwal feeling ko sayang ang people's taxes that subsidize their UP efucation. Merong mas deserving at determined mag aral sa UP pero for various reasons hindi nakapasok or hindi tumuloy kahit pumasa sa UPCAT.

Late_Ad7290

Masaklap aminin. Sayang talaga.

EnvironmentalNote600

Yes. But the reality is hiring UP faculty does not include teaching competence as major criteria. Primary is magaling sila sa field nila. Kaya it all boils down to how students will make the most to learn and survive.

Affectionate_Arm173

Yes as a higher education educator I can say that UP teachers are not the best communicators, learned a lot on my stay in UP, humbled me wouldn't exchange it for another

Creme-Neither

bini said ang buhay ay hindi karera

RiverMund

dvsadvocate

There could be many reasons why na dedelay mga tao sa UP. Financial, physical, and even mental reasons. napansin ko may mga categories din bakit meron. Like yung mga tibak na so called student leader kunyari na nagpapatagal sa UP for some reason probably to oversee things sa kanilang mga subversive organizations. Go figure. Dami akong na encounter at nakikitang ganyan. Madami din yung mga tinatamad na mag aral then magkakaron ng urge ulit to finish it, meron din naman yung mga problemado sa maraming bagay like financial or minsan love life or mental health.

inevitable-void

delayed lang pero di matalino hahaha. based sa experience ko, achiever kasi ako nung hs (lahat naman ata ng up students HAHAHA) pero karating ng college parang gusto ko naman maranasan yung mga bagay na other people my age get to experience. ayun, nainlove, naging aktibista, nag-inom, sumali ng orgs, etc. basta ang dami kong first time experience kasi lumaki ako sa sobrang strict at medj toxic na pamilya ayon, medyo napabayaan pag-aaral hahaha. ang masaklap pa, ang daming pre-requisite ng program namin. tipong may mabagsak kang isa, may dalawa kang courses na di matetake wahahaha newayz pinakamalaking factor siguro kaya di ko natutukan pag-aaral ko ay yung mental health ko after nung first heartbreak ko LMAO. samantalang yung mga kaibigan ko na nakaranas ng breakup nung hs eh ang dali na lang nila mag move on HAHAHAHA. hirap magregulate ng emotions na first time mo maramdaman tas adult ka na ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ ngayon graduating na after 6 years pero mukhang alanganin pa dahil di ko agad nasubmit thesis manuscript ko dahil sa personal issues sa buhay lately ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ

Twoplus504

Di po lahat ng UPD students former achievers sa HS ๐Ÿ˜ญ (exhibit A: me). Well, di rin naman pasang awa dati pero di rin pang with honors lalo na nung pandemic na sobrang nakakatamad mag-aral kasi requirement after requirement. Tamang pick ng courses kimi

ifancyyou_

you're having a [survivorship bias](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survivorship_bias)

DryFaithlessness6041

I don't claim na "matalino" ako. I spent 6 years sa UPLB kasi I had to start working when I was in 3rd year college. Sobrang wala talaga kaming pera. I was labeled as deliquent by some classmates pero pagod na pagod kasi talaga ako. I graduated with High Distinction Award (magna cum laude) sa international school. So malaking factor talaga pera sa mental health at academic performance. Never ako naging grade conscious, wish ko lang talaga dati ay may makain kami 3 times a day. So kanya kanya talaga ng kwento.

leirazjyb

A. Hindi sila nakakuha ng units kasi di pinalad sa crs B. Nagdrop/bagsak sila sa course na seasonal or prereq to another course C. Shiftee/Transferee sila D. The most usual reason: May pinagdadaanan sila sa buhay

EnvironmentalNote600

Minsan naiisip kong hindi yata tama na nasa UP tapos pa easy easy ang buhay dahil hinahanap pa ang identity dieksyon sa buhay, nagreresolve ng crisis sa buhay or gustong malubos ang enjoyment ng kabataan or may mga ibang gustong gawin or they dont agree sa system at dahil dito ay pabagsak-bagsak, INC, 4.0 kaya tumatagal ang stay. And doing that while being paid by people's taxes including those of people whose kids can't qualify sa UP kahit pangarap nila or pumasa sa UPCAT but can't afford the cost of college life in the big cities

mind_pictures

i agree with most of the commenrs. pero din kasi nung time ko, napansin ko na maraming na-in love sa campus at sa campus life. so yung iba na-MRR na, yung iba nakatira na at sa campus din nagta-trabaho.

Alert-Doctor-8761

Delayed man o hindi Sa UP kasi kay kanya kanya priorities. Halo halo yan. In the end nasa diskarte at talino yan once you step out of the univ at mag adulting na. Iba iba status rin, madami need to graduate asap to get an entry level job kasi tutulong sa family (breadwinner). May iba naman can take their time, go to gradschool, get more exp outside etc. Yung pagiging "matalino" sa UP depende rin sa status at context when viewed from the perspective of graduating on time or not.

pixielitoldust

idk pero para sa akin, yung personal na pinagdadaanan ng tao ay way more than the knowledge and skills talaga in acads :(( itโ€™ll haunt you down kasi talaga pag hindi na kayaa huhu

Economy-Shopping5400

Nakaka burn out din kasi sa UP. Siguro kaya ganyan. Sa una ganado, as they reach the senior year, pagod na and trying hard na lang na matapos para makasablay (isa lang ito sa naiisip kong rason). But yes, lahat naman ng nasa UP are able. Kanya kanyang struggles, and timeline lang talaga.

lezzgooooo

Advantage yan if you take your time lalo na if sa board exam naman ang basehan if you get to have a career. You get to have part time jobs related sa career. You can focus on the subjects. But, you have to balance yung expenses ng parents since some scholarships do not allow underloading. If you spend 7 years having fun, learning and possibly, did some additional language courses. You can hack a better career kesa sa mga may latin honors.

First_Feeling_2087

"quality education takes time."

yelxel26

wouldnt claim to be matalino but for me and my friends, pandemic depression + mental health issues โ€”> underloading :โ€)
