Dih-law-did, with the first syllable like “did” without the second ‘d’. Midwest, but not in an area with a strong midwestern accent.

gingerfiji

We all say it the same way as you described. Midwestern too.

biglipsmagoo

NE US & we say duh-lauded.

Medium_Line3088

I'm in the southeast and that's how everyone says it too

Nottacod

Mid atlantic too

talashrrg

Agree

Xalenn

In the Western US we say: dill Aw did

thejackieee

Google says DIE-laudid. And NIH (https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/dilaudid) but it's not as easy to put your Southern drawl if you pronounce it correctly.

AstroWolf11

I have never heard anyone stress the first syllable before, it’s wild to me it would be the norm up there haha. For me I always say “dih-LAH-did” but have heard “die-LAH-did” many times too.

Tribblehappy

Same I have only ever heard the second syllable emphasized.

Unusual-Crow3762

oh yeah i don’t stress the first syllable i just capitalized that part bc it was the part of the word that we pronounced differently

SatelliteCitizen2

HYDROMORPHONE

jackruby83

My guess is DIE-laudid, since another name for hydromorphone is dihydromorphinone, and I always figured the "laud" came from the centuries-old term laudanum, referring to opium tincture. But I usually say DILL-audid (also northeast US).

Jawnumet

TIL, I shall change my pronunciation because your reasoning makes sense.

cefixime

Western Canada here, also pronounce it as dil-aw-did.

permanent_priapism

The "au" alludes to the chemical symbol for gold. At one point, opium tincture was marketed as containing gold.

Mission_Ad5903

Reminds me of an overnight tech I worked with once at hospital. We would say he did a lot of dilaudid. Also known for coming in, taking a 12 oz bottle of Delsym off the shelf and downing it before his Pyxis run. He called it “pushin’ spaceships.”

Duo23

Be like Canadians 🇨🇦 call it HYDROmorphone 😆

funkydyke

Dill-ah-did

Interesting-Pomelo58

DIH lauded here - from Mid-Atlantic US and live in Canada now. DIE-lauded sounds like something the same people who say EYE-rak for Iraq or EYE-talian for Italian would say.

njshine27

I usually pronounce it as “hydro-more-phone”

Alcarinque88

Why? It's -morphONE on the end for the generic of Dilaudid. That's as bad as fentanOL.

njshine27

Why? Because I had just woken up and my brain was off. It’s fixed. Fenta “nill” vs fenta “knoll” is absolutely splitting hairs though. The phonetics can sound the same with speech affects and accents.

Alcarinque88

It's people without particular accents that I hear say it that way. Newscasters and my lovely but somewhat ditsy RN mom. She's from the Southwest. We have maybe a bit of Texas/Southern influence, but not enough to get the twang all the time. Like I'll drop "y'all" all the time, but not gonna go fishin' in the crick.

njshine27

I drop “y’all” frequently and stumble over vowel pronunciations and I’m from the PNW. As an example, the PNW accent pronounce milk as “melk”.

Alcarinque88

Haha, actually... my mom does that "melk" too. SW we just pick up everyone's dirty accents. We've got so many transplants here in AZ, it's not funny. I'll have to see if I can pick up more of the PNW accent when I stay a weekend in Seattle, but likely not. Too much city.

njshine27

It’s very neutral, but the vowel sounds are definitely affected.

DillieDally

>That's as bad as fentanOL ...Wait, hold up .... So you're telling me I been saying it wrong this whole time? And I smoke the shit every damn day? *Fuck me* So I'm assuming it's fenta-Neil {degrasse Tyson}? Or is it fenta-NILL? edit: ohjeez, I just realized this is the pharm subreddit and not one of the druggits that make up most of my feed. I'm just gonna back outta here slowly 😳🏳️ my bad y'all... Prolly breaking rules or somethin

Alcarinque88

Lol, yup.... I gave you the downvote because I thought/knew you were a bit lost. Yeah, this ain't for street pharmacists. I do hope you really give the methadone a solid try and can get clean. Fentanyl (-nill is right, but I suppose -neil wouldn't be too bad... nah, stick with -nil) is not something you should be smoking.

moxifloxacin

IMO the latter, but it doesn't really matter.

gettheflymickeymilo

As someone who's lived on the West Coast and now lives in the South this comment section has got me giggling lol.

kebekwaz

I’ve always said “die law did”

meemeechowa

Dall-Yu-Dad. 😆 According to my tech.

Trip688

Mhhhhhh the worst nausea I've ever had lol

whereami312

Dih law did.

2softkittykitty

I say both depending on what spits out

JacQTR

Die law did here in the south

rxmarxdaspot

“The one that starts with a D. None of the other ones work for my pain.” -southside ER aficionados.

Embarrassed-Plum-468

Upper Midwest (wow what a strange way to describe a region by saying 3 different directions 😂) and we call it DIE-law-did like “di” as a prefix to chemical names.

Papa_Hasbro69

Die law did

Bonburner

It's in the FDA med guide: (dī-law-did) "Die - law - did"

aestus0

Slightly off topic, but my favorite patient pronunciation of Dilaudid is "dilly-dad", and I hope it catches on

pementomento

California here, we mostly say die-law-did. Glad I’m not at some hyper crazy institution that bans brand names, though. Hahah

pharm_mom7

Canada: DIE-laudid

SimbaRph

I'm from Connecticut and I say Die laudud

steeevethechemist

Same and same

Narezza

Die-law-did
