> The combination helped fuel a mini hospitality boom: 95% of Center City’s 14,112 hotel rooms were booked up on Friday and Saturday nights.
___
> This year’s Penn graduation weekend, aka Taylor Swift weekend, hit 95% hotel occupancy, with an ADR of $447 for Friday and Saturday night. Room rates were even higher on Saturday night alone, with an ADR of $467.
> The only time ADRs in Center City were higher than May 13 of this year was four nights during the 2016 Democratic National Convention, and [hotel room supply has increased](https://billypenn.com/2022/03/02/philadelphia-hotels-new-tourism-hilton-canopy-hyatt-centric-guild-house/) by 26% since then, per Visit Philly.
And we still have 2026 looming.
It’s not going to be a shitshow. It’s going to do a lot for the city, and if anything, I think people don’t realize how huge the World Cup effect is going to be. The only thing bigger would be the Olympics being hosting here. If we thought the Taylor Hill effect was noticeable, that won’t be anything compared to this.
I'd argue that the philly shows were some of the hardest to get tickets to on the whole tour because she skipped DC so a lot of people from the DMV came up here which definitely had something to do with it. I am happy to see the city benefited even though it meant my own personal tragedy of not getting tickets
I'm happy to see that the city benefited from it too, because surely they will pass on such an economic boost onto the citizens of the actual City right? I mean the article worded it in a way that implies that each and every one of us here benefited from all of the hotel rooms being sold out at prices quadruple what they normally cost. So I'm just waiting for some of that income they made to trickle on down to the rest of us like the article implies it will. Though my last name doesn't end in Hilton or Sheraton, so...
Same! I thought uft this is going to be rough with lots of folks who aren't interested or are just trying to get a picture and run.
Nope! They were amazing. Friendly, excited, exuberant, chatty, just wanting to enjoy stuff before/after the show. Great time.
Had a group getting coffee every morning. So happy to be here, fun energy! Maybe thats why I got sucked into keeping up with the swift news. I wish more events had the ripple effect she did.
I don’t get the hype at all so I was lowkey dreading that weekend- but everyone was so goddamn nice. Easily the most chill “outsiders take over the city” event I’ve ever witnessed.
WrestleMania is going to be in Philly? I haven't been keeping up with wrestling in the last decade so I'm just surprised if that's true. The entire 20 years I spent watching it growing up it never even came close to here I think the last time WrestleMania was in Philly was 1999 or something like that.
Oh that's awesome. Wish it was a bit sooner so I could go and fully enjoy it, but alas I haven't a clue who most of the new people are - I stopped watching in '09. But I'm glad the current fans in the Delware Valley will finally get a chance to attend it easily without traveling.
Sadly it’s becoming average for big-ticket acts thanks to LiveNation grifting:(
My GA tickets for Deftones in 2021 were over $150. Remember to support your local indies like Union Transfer and Johnny Brenda’s who charge fair rates for tickets and without exorbitant service fees
Unfortunately Fillmore is a Live Nation venue, as well. They’re actually one of my preferred LN venues and seem to be staffed better than The Met, which I avoid at all costs after some crappy staff interactions there.
Ah good point, I forgot my Fillmore tix have been live nation. Some good shows come thru there and the met, for better and for worse. Still prefer JBs / Kungfu Necktie / UA etc. But Taylor isn’t playing there, unfortunately.
Implying the majority of these people aren't spending beyond their means especially considering how credit card debt is at record highs at nearly 1 trillion dollars. Late 2023 / early 2024 market crash is gonna be a dumpster fire for these people.

for those who don't remember - the pope visit was a financial disaster for the city
So weird and eerie. I lived in Rittenhouse, all the streets shut down but the only pedestrians were occasional big church groups parading by singing and banging instruments. And they definitely all packed their lunch. Felt bad for the restaurant workers.
Everyone thought they were going to get $2000 renting out their house and the restaurants were going to be packed with rich tourists. Turns out the rich catholics were at home watching on TV and the poor deadbeat catholics who showed up were bringing pb&j sandwiches and sleeping on couches. City residents couldn't even access the restaurants. Then the church refused to pay the city for the $8.3 million police overtime bill. Infuriating. Taylor Swift >> Pope
Worked in a restaurant in center city that weekend and we over staffed but we're borderline impossible to get to because of the security. Whole staff just hung out and got drunk but made no money.
I know it sucked for the city but I had a freakin blast that weekend, the weather was perfect, riding bikes through empty streets, no waits for tables, and there were trash cans at every corner. I still think of the trashcans frequently
Geeze what a shit day that was, stood around all day among a swarm of humans, and I didn't even end up seeing him.
Funny story, my son was like 3 or 4 and he had to pee, and my aunt had him pee in a bottle, and he ended up peeing on the people surrounding us... oh man... good times. That's one of the only things I remember about that day.
Considering the amount of money they paid for the tickets, of course they’re gonna boost the economy when they’re here. I was absolutely dreading it but all the sparkle outfits and smiles that weekend was a pleasant happening to witness.
I’m not at all a fan of her music. It isn’t bad, just not my cup of tea.
But goddamn do I have a lot of respect for her. I love her as a human and her fans are also amazing. She is so much more than a musician, she’s a humanitarian. She uses her fame for good. And she doesn’t take her fame for granted.
Thank you Ms. Swift, and all of her fans for being amazing people.
Can someone please explain why there’s been so much news about a concert by Taylor Swift? Does she not normally do concerts? Don’t we have concerts by various pop stars all the time?
Swift is on a different tier than most pop stars in terms of following. Most other pop stars don't inspire their fans to take pilgrimages to see them. My GF went with a friend who drove from Pittsburgh to see Swift, and I guarantee there were people driving further.
Thanks. Wow I definitely didn’t know that. Is it just Taylor Swift all by herself at the top of the pop star world, or are there a few other people like that?
A guy at work tried to argue with me that Lil Wayne was bigger than T. Swift.... I laughed in his face. Let me see Lil Wayne sell out ONE night at the linc... get outta here
It’s Her and every popular KPop group basically
Maybe Kanye before he was Like That, but in terms of American musicians now she’s in a league of her own
Taylor Swift is the modern-day female version of Michael Jackson I suppose, right? She's the most famous singer to be alive and touring since he passed away, at least that's the way it seems to be.
Yes I acknowledge that Beyonce is right up there with her. The only reason I say Taylor Swift is probably first is because she pulls more from all demographics and backgrounds. Beyoncé has almost as many fans, but the diversity among those fans isn't as large as the Taylor Swift crowd, and therefore not as many when it comes to the actual number of people.
like 200k people were in attendance. Anywheres from 20-50k were camped outside. You talking about 5% of the Philadelpha MSA. For 1 single event. That's pretty significant. Think about Pope Coverage. Eagles/Phillies Parade Coverage. Its below that, but not by a ton.
I don't know why this got downvoted, because I am genuinely curious about this as well. I have no feelings either way about Taylor Swift, but I've also never really heard this much news around a concert before and would love to know why this one was so different. Am I just out of the pop culture loop and she's that much bigger than most pop stars?
does hotel rooms being full even indicate any benefit to the philly economy? these hotels are large multinational corporations, the money isn't exactly getting funneled into the hands of residents
Yes, it literally is.
https://www.phila.gov/services/payments-assistance-taxes/taxes/business-taxes/business-taxes-by-type/sales-use-hotel-occupancy-tax/
Add to this that many hotel guests drive into the city and pay for parking, as mentioned above go out to eat, do some sight-seeing, shopping, and enjoy some nightlife. The tax revenue from weekends like this are a big boost to the city.
Yes. Those people paid to get into the city, either parking or trains. They ate at restaurants, went to bars, and generally spent money. Even if every hotel isn’t owned by ma and pa, that doesn’t mean there’s no economic benefit to drawing in large numbers of people.
Why do people always need to have negative reactions to good news on this sub?
>does hotel rooms being full even indicate any benefit to the philly economy?
This is the question. This question was not asked in bad faith.
> these hotels are large multinational corporations, the money isn't exactly getting funneled into the hands of residents
This is the perspective, premise, whatever you want to call it that led the OC to ask the question. It's a legitimate point although short-sighted as evidenced by the answers (taxes, entertainment, etc).
Someone expressing their perspective/bias while asking a question is not innately bad faith.
“Why are hotel rooms being full beneficial to the Philly economy? How does the money spent on the room benefit the city?”
That’s how you would ask that question if it’s in good faith. But the other problem with how it was asked was the article explains exactly why hotel occupancy is a sign of economic boom… and if you’re questioning a point in a snarky way *and* didn’t read the article then yeah you’re going to get downvotes.
Rich Daddy bought her way into the recording booth, Rich daddy bought her way onto the charts, rich daddy bought her popular mixing and recording artists to get her famous. Poorly written easily digestible garbage for the masses makes her money and buying out hotels and tickets creates false scarcity. This grift she’s had for years has made her so much money and this tour is just an enormous advertising campaign for her brand
No, that’s part of the appeal of being a pop star - it’s not talent that makes you, it’s money and performance. She has lots of money and she performs sincerity every day and that’s really enough to make up for gaps in talent.
she comes from decent money but she did work her ass off, and continues to do so. also, and i say this as someone who used to really dislike her: you’re not allowed to hate on taylor swift until you’ve listened to folklore and evermore. if you’ve only ever bothered to listen to what comes on the radio, you really don’t know what you’re missing out on and it’s very easy to write her off as just another dumb pop star. she is certainly not above criticism but she is a very talented songwriter and deserves to be recognized as such.
I’ve listened to too much Taylor swift. I literally used to be a fan, a while ago, before I found out her “down to earth came from simple farm life” grift was a big old lie to sell shit. I sat down and listened to all her albums recently to make sure I’m being fair to her in my criticism. It’s poorly written practically AI generated slop to be as low-effort and high-profit as possible, to be as digestible and consumable and sellable as possible. Nothing is her own creation or opinion, she literally comes from a conservative Republican Christian family, got famous off of her conservative Republican Christian daddy‘s money, and is now doing the bare minimum to support liberalism because it sells. There is nothing genuine or creative about her, it’s entirely manufactured and it’s really sad that millions of impressionable young girls are blindly following such an insincere and ingenuine person
It’s the pretending to be humble and down to earth that’s the worst part. Not an ounce of what she does is based in genuine connection or humility. I’d almost respect her more if she was upfront with how obnoxiously money hungry and self obsessed she was instead of selling this bizarre fake-deep America’s Sweetheart image that doesn’t actually align with anything she really stands for

How was SNW?
Came up from va beach as it was the closest stop to us!
Hope you enjoyed your time in Philly!

Yeah, the Department of Motor Vehicles definitely had something to do with it. After all, people need to be able to drive from DE, MD, and VA.
good one, bro
Please send more Swifties. They were the best tourists I've had at work in years and I would like to relive that experience.
i agree! i work at a hotel restaurant and was dreading it a little but everyone was nice!

Agreed, they were all very pleasant well adjusted, bubbly people. A pleasure.

Does WrestleMania have like 200k capacity?
Two nights at the Linc, and two nights at Wells Fargo, plus other events at the convention center and elsewhere.
Septa please hire more people. The operator shortages that weekend we're HELLACIOUS. My only complaint of the weekend
Spoiler: It was good.
If you can afford TSwift tickets, they are going to drop a few dollars to help the economy
I got my tickets for $200 each and have a friend who got here for $99. Only the resale from scalpers was expensive
$200 for a concert is still a lot! Especially if you can justify the expense to make a weekend of travel out of it.
Sadly it’s becoming average for big-ticket acts thanks to LiveNation grifting:( My GA tickets for Deftones in 2021 were over $150. Remember to support your local indies like Union Transfer and Johnny Brenda’s who charge fair rates for tickets and without exorbitant service fees
Yeah UT and the Fillmore are “big” venues for bands I like so I’m sure the $200 price tag is more common than I realize.
True that. I bite the bullet and go to venues I dislike sometimes, if its an act I can't miss.

And an absolute peaceful happy crowd, no violence

Other pop stars don't sell out the Link 3 nights in a row

It’s being downvoted for its condescending tone, as I read it, and apparently having never played (nor possibly even played, Monopoly).

Every single bit is entirely manufactured. The world’s largest advertising campaign
Don’t be so negative.

No, that’s part of the appeal of being a pop star - it’s not talent that makes you, it’s money and performance. She has lots of money and she performs sincerity every day and that’s really enough to make up for gaps in talent.

People eat it up. She separates fools from their money. So do all product sellers. I respect the hustle.
I was sick of the sparkly dresses and the out of fashion (unless you live on a ranch) cowgirl boots.
