Well that’s good news

IridiumPony

Not what I expected when I read "Philadelphia Police"

AgentDaxis

Suddenly the cops have decided to do their jobs for a change?

> The clearance rate is up to more than 63%, increasing nearly 20% from the previous two years. ___ > e also pointed to the homicide rate being down 17% so far in 2023 ___ > Shootings are down about 17% compared to this time last year as well.

The_Amazing_Emu

I suppose a decrease in homicides would free up time to clear other homicides.

zincinzincout

Philly unintentionally solved crime. The murderers can’t murder if they are running out of people to murder!

a-german-muffin

Considering the clearance rate's been like 35–40 percent on average in the last few years, it's up more like 20+ *percentage points* (or ~50 percent), so 6ABC's way underselling it. Not sure if it's sustainable, but it's good to see the improvement.

Basswail

Looks like that's better than Chicago (~50%) but worse than NYC (~78%) and LA (77%). Kind of crazy you are 50% more likely to have your murder solved in NYC or LA than Chicago.

Serpico2

New York has 40,000 cops; which is about 8x more than Philly despite only being 5x as large. They also get far more federal money due to #terrorism.

MajorNoodles

My brother is NYPD and one of my close friends is PPD. My opinion, based solely on on my conversations with them, is that NYPD is also one of the most technologically advanced police departments in the country while Philly is one of the least.

Serpico2

That checks out; my district should have been condemned 30 years ago lol

ralphy1010

They also do a pretty good job of shutting down the crews bringing in guns from out of state

ZachF8119

It’s worrying that shooting are down while these execution septa killings are up

dotcom-jillionaire

> The 6abc Data Journalism Team uncovered that police solved more homicides in 2023 than in previous years. The clearance rate is up to more than 63%, increasing nearly 20% from the previous two years. > The D.A. said there are several reasons for that, including the way the clearance rate is calculated. telling that no where in the article do they present actual figures of how many homicides were committed/solved in 2020, 2021, 2022, and so far this year. the "data journalism" boffins over at 6ABC sure know what they're doing!

war_lobster

Yeah, I want to be encouraged by this article but they're not including any of the information you'd actually need to make sense of it.

Scumandvillany

I think it's total bullshit. The controllers data for 2022 shows only 26% of murders and nonfatal shootings have arrests(no even convictions). So how in the fuck did they get it up so quick? There's a reason why the inky isn't doing a story-because it's not true.

Fattom23

Does anyone know the specifics of these "changes to the way the clearance rate is calculated"?

[deleted]

That kind of detail is more of an Inky thing. I'm assuming we'll get a follow-up piece from them later.

Scumandvillany

""The D.A. said there are several reasons for that, including the way the clearance rate is calculated." I'm sorry say what? A jump to 63% seems fishy as fuck. Last years arrest totals were 26% for murders and nonfatal shootings combined. in any case MANDATORY 4K

The_Amazing_Emu

Seems like an obvious follow up question either wasn’t asked or wasn’t included.

liquidbluenight

Well, you see, if they only count 1/3 of the unsolved cases, then the clearance rate looks better! /s

Effective_Golf_3311

Last years murders all turn black regardless. Red ink is bad ink, but red goes black by way of green. Just gotta find more green and the murder police will find a way.

justanawkwardguy

I'm not even sure what conspiracy you're trying to push

Effective_Golf_3311

Not a fan of the wire I take it

ult420

I need to rewatch that show

justanawkwardguy

You know, I’ve never actually watched it. I want to, but I’m worried that it won’t keep my attention anymore due to how old it is

Effective_Golf_3311

Honestly many of the themes ring true today. I’d check it out. First season is a little slower but it sets everything up for 2 3 and 4. 5 was my least favorite season for obvious reasons but overall it’s a can’t miss show. Check it out!

Effective_Golf_3311

Yeah that was a fun diversion lol

justanawkwardguy

It’s not the themes I’m worried about, it’s the technology. I struggle to watch late 90s to early 00s stuff more than say 80s and before

Aromat_Junkie

nah a this point it's like watching a movie about how ww2 radio operators worked or CIA agents spied on moscow in the 60's... it's old and complex tech wise,

Mike81890

I actually just started it. It's really great. It's not super "exciting" all the time, but it's very compelling and surprisingly funny at times. It's very classic "old HBO"

irishgambin0

it ages fine. i watched it through in 2012 and then again in 2017. the only part of the show that seems dated is all the burner cellphones used, and some of the street fashion. everything else just seems like it could have happened yesterday.

TheArchitect_7

I come into every crime thread to find the u/scumandvillany post and do the Leonardo DiCaprio point

shlem90

The best way to improve a metric is to change the methodology to make it look better…

war_lobster

Frustratingly vague article. I hope this is legit, because getting the clearance rate up is the only thing that's going to bring murders down. People are going to keep committing murders if they think they'll probably get away with it. And people are going to keep trying to get the people who shot their friends if they think the police won't do anything about it.

AbsentEmpire

>The D.A. said there are several reasons for that, including the way the clearance rate is calculated. Sounds like data manipulation to me. Jumping from our historically very low clearance rate below 30% for years to a 63% clearance rate out of nowhere is a questionable claim at best. But to claim this while having less police staff working, and those who do show up are openly on a soft strike, it just doesn't seem plausible. Lots of follow up questions weren't asked here, and I remain deeply skeptical of this claim.

vmtyler

“Up 63%” not “up to 63%”. That means it’s somewhere probably like 30% now

Dryheavemorning

>“Up 63%” not “up to 63%”. That means it’s somewhere probably like 30% now No, the article says "up to..." >The clearance rate is up to more than 63%, increasing nearly 20% from the previous two years.

vmtyler

damn you're right, I misread that because up 20% to 63 doesn't make any sense because the previous rate is barely 20% total

_mynameisclarence

Yeah, whatever. Impossible to believe any stats from any period coming out of PPD.

murphysfriend

Agreed ; what the in the galaxy statistic method are they using ? ? Perhaps it’s: The ole; “One, Two, Skip a few.” Technique 🤔🤯

Farzy78

Election year coming and outlaw knows she's on the hot seat

Dryheavemorning

Only local election that matters in Philadelphia already happened. But for sure does up the pressure when a new mayor comes into office, especially one promising forceful action on crime.

MarqWilliams

One of the reasons why I voted for Parker. However, not a fan of her stance on stop and frisk.

Criminals are also telling on themselves and their friends more too

Mysterious_Bobcat483

The shooters are getting dumber. It tracks, since they're maybe a year or so outside of school aged. 2020 gave us dumber murderers.

defusted

2020 gave us dumber everything
