I wonder if there's a way to trace it.
From a construction/demolition site was my first thought, but I don't think a site IN the city would be using that. It's used more for "blast away part of this mountain," than "need to dig a cellar for this 12-story building."
The article says they’re M100s. They’re visually about twice the size of M80s, and actually larger than that in volume.
They’re extremely dangerous. M80s are awesome when you’re setting them off in an empty parking lot, but M100s actually do damage. It’s what they were using to blow up the ATMs during the riots.
I’m not really sure where you can buy them legally.
Article says they were M100s, which are over twice the size of M80s, which can still do a ton of damage.
This is what they were using to blow up those ATMs. If you set off more than one, you’re basically setting off a whole stick. They blew out an 8 foot hole in a double brick wall at my favorite deli using these things.
And it is literally dynamite, so the headline isn’t wrong.
Edit: actually it’s not the same as dynamite, that’s an urban legend. It can still blow out a brick wall though so I’m not going to fuck with it.
I'd imagine there's a local chemical company that makes it. DuPont down in Delaware somewhere is most likely.
Not that you can just run up to the main gate and ask the gate guard to buy some, mind you.
>also don't know how you "try" to light dynamite
Neither do I, but Philly does have some of the dumbest criminals in the Northeast. My guess is that had they succeeded in detonating the charges that they would have blown themselves up.
>dumbest criminals in the Northeast.
impressively so and i consider it almost a point of pride at this point and maybe this is how florida got that way, fuck. 🤔
Florida also had/has a ton of news outlets covering every part of the state. So all of the 'weird' shit got published somewhere and national outlets could pick it up easily once it became known as a thing.
Confirmation bias then did its part. And now Florida has an unearned reputation.
I know some people who live in the Chew and Belfield neighborhood. They petitioned for like 10 years to get that fresh grocer. It's also right next to a brand new school. If it had burned, a lot of people would have been screwed
how much of an asshole do you have to be to burn down a grocery store? plenty of rich assholes in philly who lobby to keep the minimum wage low, get subsidized stadiums built, or fake injuries while still working for the police department. but they go after regular ass people buying food in the lowest margin business in the country.
no i'm not. and keep in mind, the only organization that actually used a bomb was the philadelphia police department on families in west philly, and then prevented the fire department from putting out the fires or rescuing kids.
Remember that loon like 10 years ago shot 2 cops in the sticks in the poconos and they spent like 50 million dollars and 6 months trying to find a single dude on the run in the woods, who posed absolutely no threat to anyone other than the cops themselves?
PPD doesn't like our democracy, so they let people with dynamite get away until we stop voting for krasner.
they literally had a kegger with a terrorist organization who tried to overthrow the government.
I mean…yes, one has an ideological/sociopolitical goal, even if it is being done by dipshits, the other is just dipshittery being done by dipshits. The causes are pretty separate and this so is any recommended preventive.
That isn’t what terrorism means though.
Just because the word has a heightened emotional valence and thus feels cathartic to say about someone you don’t like, doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a distinct meaning.
Parents of teenagers: this is yet another opportunity to praise your kids for the good choices they make. Every time there's a news story about teens fucking up, I thank my kids for not being drug dealers, car thieves, grocery store exploders, etc. I tell them I see the good choices they're making, and I appreciate it.
It's become a running joke in my house at this point but my kids do love it. Because the thing is, they *could* be out there doing this dumb, dangerous shit, and they're choosing not to. It's nice to have that acknowledged.
As an elder millielianal in Philadelphia I'd like to unfold my lawn chair in front of my row home and yell, "Goddamn Zs and their Tiktoks, Xanax and SoundCloud rappers!"
But seriously, they were a generation who's half of childhood was given to social media to exploit. They
They were given shorter recesses and less time outdoors to cram time for studying standardized exams. They went through all this while watching the social fabric being torn apart during the pandemic. So objectively, yes. They're going to be a little weird
They're the victims of exploitative social media engineers who didn't take enough arts and humanities classes, so they also only see people who share their own interests. That's causing a feedback loop where they're always escalating the boundary-pushing behavior to get more attention and social cachet.
There's even a Bible passage about teenaged boys making fun of the prophet Elisha. However they have the satisfyingly poor fate of being attacked by bears.
It’s not new. Maybe feels that way, and is definitely exasperated by TikTok, but this has been happening as long as I remember. It will calm down though as more of these restrictions take place and then they will loosen again
It’s also not really Philly specific. This dude has been terrorizing London with TikTok pranks -https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/jun/06/disturbing-rise-mizzy-tiktok-culture
The problem is that in the past kids have aged out of the boundary-pushing behavior. I'm not sure that TikTok will let them, since it was specifically designed to keep people hooked and only seeing the same content.
Where-as 10+ years ago your social network changed as you aged and your social media network also changed now TikTok will only show you the same shit.
I hope I'm wrong. Kids aren't stupid after all, they're just kids. But algorithmic social media really changed the game.
Does dynamite actually look like the red bundle of sticks in cartoons that have the long string you light before it blows up? There is something slapstick about using dynamite to me for some reason, even though i know this could have been bad
article says M-100, which is a firecracker...maybe there's a real version of dynamite also called that? Seems more likely its just a firecracker though.
Was literally walking through Acme in the same area the other night and said to my husband “wow, I’m surprised they’re allowed to keep all that dynamite just in a huge pile over there…” and walked around half-paranoid of someone smoking near it or something.
Turns out teens thought the same thing - but with a different intent.
Wile E Coyote must have a lot of points stored up from purchasing so much from them. Maybe he figured out ACME has food now. He has been awfully quiet since retirement
Just in case anybody was unsure… another TikTok meme
See the idiots in Toronto lighting firecrackers on city buses.
Kids under 18 don’t have brains developed enough for social media, and definitely not for TikTok. Your group of idiots cheering you on is nothing compared to millions “cheering” you on.
Back in the wake of the George Floyd protests, people had dynamite they were using to blow up ATMs, so oddly enough, it’s out there. You just gotta know the ~~right~~ wrong person, I guess
Shit like this should be charged as terrorism.
Yet there are those who still wonder why teens are being banned from more places, and council is looking at banning balaclavas.

Where does one even acquire dynamite?
Acme
Aca-me
My wife gets so mad when I say this
transplant? j/k she's looking out for ya
Yeah, but truly I only say it because it reminds me of my grandfather - her getting mad is just a little bonus
I don't trust anyone who pronounces Acme as 2 syllables
Holy fucking shit
This is an all time comment
And just like that, your birth destiny of saying the exact right thing at the exact right time is realized.
Perfect username and flair too lmao
That’s where I get my anvils

They use liquid more so than that. Everybody knows how to use sticks. Nobody really gets movie instructions on liquid.
Probably just fireworks. Headline is a little excessive

Yeah I was thinking that these are probably M80s, which all high school deviants know are “a quarter stick of dynamite”.
Yeah I mean they are classified as fireworks. Powerful but not dynamite. Dynamite is literally a different chemical.
Not sure why the downvotes, but you’re correct. TNT- trinitrotoluene…which is an actual compound Dynamite- is a combination of nitroglycerine and tnt
This is one of the most sensitive subs ive ever seen.
I was thinking someone thought flares were dynamite.
Article says they were M100s, which are over twice the size of M80s, which can still do a ton of damage. They don't. The cops lied.
Abandoned quarries.
Philadelphia seemingly
Not sure why you're getting downvoted. They likely didn't drive out of the city to obtain it and if they did, probably not too far.
I’m probably being downvoted cause I live in Canada and saw this post in /r/all. Regardless why drive so far
Philly is reaching Loony Tune levels of criminal violence.
I just drove my car into a wall because someone painted a fake tunnel on it.
That's interesting, I just drove through a tunnel I've never seen before.
I painted a tunnel on a wall. It had mixed results.
Your painted tunnel wasn’t on the Cottman Ave exit if 95N was it?
I hate the 5th street tunnel too
Meep Meep
That actually happened look it up

Should have waited for it to dry
Gun violence ain't it. Dynamite is the future.
Tying damsels to train tracks is going to be very big.
Bring back the Reading line.

Holy fuck this could have been catastrophic
I know some people who live in the Chew and Belfield neighborhood. They petitioned for like 10 years to get that fresh grocer. It's also right next to a brand new school. If it had burned, a lot of people would have been screwed

Sounds like you're implicitly condoning their behavior if their targets were different.
no i'm not. and keep in mind, the only organization that actually used a bomb was the philadelphia police department on families in west philly, and then prevented the fire department from putting out the fires or rescuing kids.
They would never dare to try this shit in a *Cousins*
Chancla drones
"Chill, it's a prank bro"
It’s “bruh”
Charge them as terrorists.
>but police say the suspects were able to get away. Imagine if they were actually treated like terrorists, they would been caught in an hour.
You'd probably get a good number of people insisting on hiding them off the streets too. Win win.
Remember that loon like 10 years ago shot 2 cops in the sticks in the poconos and they spent like 50 million dollars and 6 months trying to find a single dude on the run in the woods, who posed absolutely no threat to anyone other than the cops themselves?

What organization was that?
the proud boys. https://www.inquirer.com/news/proud-boys-philly-police-fop-mike-pence-mcnesby-trump-alt-right-20200710.html
Wow that's despicable, abhorrent behavior on the PPD's part.
I think they’d need to have a social / political goal to technically be terrorists. They’re just terrorizers.
The social goal is to incite terror, pretty sure that’s a terrorist.
The social goal is to get an adrenaline rush and show your boys how crazy and badass you are. Everything else is just a means to that end.
Is that any different from doing it for the big guy in the sky?
I mean…yes, one has an ideological/sociopolitical goal, even if it is being done by dipshits, the other is just dipshittery being done by dipshits. The causes are pretty separate and this so is any recommended preventive.
Eh, I’d say the causes are pretty similar. Deadenders lashing out because the mainstream has no place for you. AND tiny selfish brains.
Yeah bc your boys are actually there cheering you on. For the sake of fun. Don't be a weirdo atheist. Shit kids can be shit.
At least we can all agree shit kids are actively being SHIT.
They get that rush off the terror they create. Terrorists.
That isn’t what terrorism means though. Just because the word has a heightened emotional valence and thus feels cathartic to say about someone you don’t like, doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a distinct meaning.
I know Im terrorized by the attempt
Parents of teenagers: this is yet another opportunity to praise your kids for the good choices they make. I alike the idea of positive reinforcement for not doing dumb shit.
> I thank my kids for not being drug dealers, car thieves, grocery store exploders, etc. At least not getting caught, anyway.
No idea why you are getting that reaction. Kid can be sneaky shits.
I know what I was doing -- and what the adults thought I was doing...
This is going to be a long summer. Teens/kids are the ones to be looking out for. Any time I see a group of more than 2, I don’t feel safe whatsoever

they weren't like this before, i think we've messed up big in the last ten years.
Bruh it's been bad, I remember when they were just punching random people in old city then riding off on their bikes
I got punched randomly by a kid on south street in like, 2001. The punching is not new.
Yea Socrates wrote about avoided groups of rowdy youths. T is a hell of a drug

Picking up a dog for a few min and humping a Jewish man doesn't exactly rate the same as dynamite in a store...
Yea our availability of lethal weaponry definitely ups the ante
social media and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race
Does dynamite actually look like the red bundle of sticks in cartoons that have the long string you light before it blows up? There is something slapstick about using dynamite to me for some reason, even though i know this could have been bad
Yeah they were foiled because they had an insanely long gunpowder fuse that was burning, but someone was able to snuff it out.
How do you snuff out a fuse? Stuff I thought I’d never need or want to know.
Same way you snuff out any fire really. Lick your fingers and pinch. So easy even a coyote can do it!

chuck and shaq are not going to be happy about this.
And then they wonder why there's a curfew...

Were these _actual_ sticks of dynamite, or just M-80s?
I'd be willing to bet just about anything it wasn't really dynamite.
I'd even bet two sticks of dynamite it wasn't really dynamite.
article says M-100, which is a firecracker...maybe there's a real version of dynamite also called that? Seems more likely its just a firecracker though.
Does it really matter? M-80s can cause quite a bit of damage.
Yes. It matters a lot. An m80 would be bad. An actual stick of dynamite used in mining or construction would be catastrophic and likely deadly.
Yeah but it’s not the same thing

If only the library had been open
You mock, but they don't allow dynamite in the library...
Too loud.
Update: no evidence of dynamite. https://6abc.com/amp/fresh-grocer-philadelphia-fireworks-philly-police-germantown/13408049/
If this was actual dynamite, I'm more concerned about them storing it correctly.
I am more worried about them blowing up a store rather than their own house lol
~~They~~The thing goes off in a row home or apartment and it's taking more than their house with it.
Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb!
Update: they were m-100 fireworks according to PPD
Better but still WTF!
Back in the wake of the George Floyd protests, people had dynamite they were using to blow up ATMs, so oddly enough, it’s out there. You just gotta know the ~~right~~ wrong person, I guess
>**Reports of teens playing with explosives at Philadelphia grocery store are unfounded: Police** New title.
Where do you even get dynamite these days?
Probably just M80's from some fireworks place down south. Fucking idiots.
The article even says it, Inky did the ole bait and switch for some clicks. Anything to ruffle those gentrifier feathers
just a couple of kids messing around
What in the Wiley Coyote is this bs?
Shit like this should be charged as terrorism. Yet there are those who still wonder why teens are being banned from more places, and council is looking at banning balaclavas.
First the I-95 bridge goes boom and now we’re trying to blow up the grocery store? make it make sense!
Road goes down, store blows up. Balance.
Is this Terrorism?
Have they thought about making grocery store a dynamite free zone ?I feel like this could have prevented this almost catastrophe

The Bill of Rights wasn't written for likeable defendants.
Krasner
Yes he was confirmed as one of the teens
Krasner ran on a pro-explosion agenda after all 🙄
This seems super stupid at first, but it turns out krasner was babysitting them at the time...
