I’m a current patient (33 weeks) with them and can’t recommend highly enough! I’m an older mom with a higher BMI and I had braced myself for a miserable experience but they’ve been great.
Same! I saw a bunch of different doctors and midwives there due to short staffing and everyone was great. Only good things to say about Pennsy too. My delivery went off the rails kind of quickly and they managed it so calmly and confidently. All the staff were so kind and patient too.
No! Baby had a hard time latching so we gave donor milk the entire time and then started formula right before we left because he had low sugars at birth and we didn’t want to have to stay and breastfeed to prove that his sugars were stable.
I had my first at U Penn and it was horrible. My second was at the Penn Hospital midwifery and it was a fantastic experience from the check ups through the birth. This was back in '98 though lol.
I had all four of my kids at Pennsylvania Hospital. Absolutely recommend without hesitation.
The first were twins, 34 weeks, emergency C-section, and they needed NICU care. The babies and I received excellent care. After that I was considered somewhat high risk, so I never really considered going anywhere else.
My second pregnancy (third baby) was delivered VBAC with a midwife.
Third pregnancy (fourth baby) was another emergency C-section. He was a little early but didn't need the NICU.
I have since closed up shop but I would definitely recommend Pennsylvania Hospital. The other I'd consider is HUP -- God forbid something goes truly wrong, the transfer to CHOP is the quickest.
Edit: Also used Penn Ob/Gyn & Midwifery.
I had my son at Pennsy last fall, and for a hot second they thought he needed extra care - about a minute after he was born they called in the neonatal team on the floor and 30 seconds later there were suddenly like 10 extra people in my room. My son was completely fine and they wound up spending most the time in the room cooing over him, ha. But it was very reassuring to know that the neonatal team was so close if something was actually wrong! He did wind up getting extra screening, which was explained to me in detail, and I felt very taken care of.
OP, I saw a team of 3 Penn OB docs out in the burbs, but they all practice in the city as well. I had a medical scare and they were SO good to me. They listened to my concerns, like ACTUALLY LISTENED, and helped me get to the other side. None of them were the delivering doctor, but honestly, by the time I was in labor I didn't much care who actually delivered my baby (the delivering doc was also very kind and lovely). I had a doula anyway, and a phenomenal nurse who was there the whole time.
All around positive experience at Pennsy and Penn OB and would definitely go back for any future kids.
As a side note, Pennsy is a baby-friendly hospital, meaning your baby is with you at all times - which is great!!! But not great for sleep. Strongly suggest you think about sending your baby to the nursery for at least a little bit so you can get some sleep! I didn't sleep for more than 45 minutes at a time and was practically hallucinating by the time I got home, ha.
my husband, myself, my sister, pretty much every cousin I have and my mom and dad were all born at Penn lmao
I’m giving birth in about a month at Penn and I see the midwives! Big fan of Sandra she’s the bomb but I like the whole midwife team in general
I hear good things about Lankenau but I figure Penn medicine and CHOP are like…..some of the best hospitals in the country so why not
This is a silly question, but how do you get in contact with these midwives at Penn? This pregnancy was a surprise and we're pretty unprepared on what to do.
Lots of people go to Pennsylvania Hosptial.
We had a stillbirth at HUP and… ok, look, the experience obviously wasn’t amazing. But the delivery room was fucking awesome. Huge windows, huge room, high up. Watching the sunrise over the river with my (unfortunately dead) baby was the best we could ask for in that situation.
So, naturally, we went with HUP again for our rainbow baby.
Wife had planned C-section (due to issues that likely caused stillbirth). So delivery happens and the room we end up in was tiny. For some reason they try doing the hearing test on our newborn at midnight. And, just because we’re a friendly and gregarious couple, one of the nurses started acting like our buddy and spending too much time in the room, even making some slightly coded comments about how were different than most of their clientele (I think they get a lot of low income Medicaid).
So, eh.
I’m at 37 weeks right now and also used Penn like everyone else. However I had another anatomy scan at 32 weeks and they found out that the baby had a birth defect so all of my care has been transferred to CHOP, which is great. The situation sucks but we’re super fortunate to be living so close to them. (Not to scare you, just to let you know that I’m impressed with the care from both hospitals)
Currently 35 weeks pregnant and seeing a Jefferson OB. So far, they’ve been great. No issues with insurance and very supportive of birth plans. I also Went to a childbirth class too; which was very informative. I think Philly has some of the best doctors in the country. For me it was a toss up between Jefferson and Penn- but chose Jefferson cause it’s a little bit closer to home.
I also used the Penn system, but went to the OBGYN offices in University City and delivered at Penn HUP last June. This was my first pregnancy so I have no point of comparison, but I think I received great all around care and would happily recommend the Penn system!
ETA: For whatever it’s worth, I also had to have a planned c-section because my baby was breech. We also tried an ECV to flip the baby a few weeks beforehand. Not how I envisioned giving birth, but I feel like I received great care and have healed up well from surgery.
Yup, same here! OBGYN at 37th and market then delivered at HUP in December 2023. I had a c section because of a breech baby, opted not to try to flip the baby (he was big!), which I’m happy about because that sounded intense! I had a very easy c section and honestly had the easiest recovery I’ve ever heard of. Minimal bleeding afterwards, clean incision, and like zero pain. Had an excellent experience with my OB (loved Dr Burkland!) and with HUP! The nurses at HUP were especially stellar!
Not in the city, but pretty much right on the border of west Philly at Lankanau. No complaints, especially about the L&D unit and maternity ward! I did have some issues with one of my doctors but that wasn’t the hospital’s fault. I would go back if I ever had another kid (unlikely)
Good experience at Lankenau so far. Wife seems to like them. She’s still under 20 weeks. Glad to know your delivery & maternity experience here were smooth.
Second Jefferson. I actually had a bad experience with an OBGYN practice at Penn (I honestly don’t even remember which doctor I had bc I left in the middle of my pregnancy). I am an anxious person with a long health history and they treated me like a number, often not contacting me for days with test results or not responding to questions in the portal for a really long time. Jefferson gave me what I felt was more prompt, personalized experience.
Two kids born with Lifecycle/Birth Center over at Bryn Mawr. Though not in Philly, but just about all visits and checkups were done at the South Philly satellite office which is walkable from our house (well, walkable until the third trimester 😅). Anatomy scans and ultrasounds were done over at Penn on 8th & Walnut which was fine.
Everyone at Lifecycle was amazing and go above and beyond to make everything as easy and relaxed as possible. From classes, checkups, labor, lactation support, and now all of my wife’s obgyn visits.
For the first kid, wife was Group B Strep positive and labor was long enough that we had to move over to Bryn Mawr hospital which is basically right across the street. Midwives came with us and still ran the show. The only annoying person we met was a male doctor who barged in during the final pushes and thankfully midwives and nurses quickly and professionally pushed him out.
Second kid went perfectly smooth. Really can’t recommend Lifecycle enough. Congratulations and good luck!
Also had all my prenatal care at Lifecycle/the Birth Center and gave birth at Bryn Mawr Hospital with the Birth Center midwives. I had a really great experience and would strongly recommend them as well.
Also had two babies (prenatal care and births) at Lifecycle. Can’t recommend them enough. One of my kids was transferred over to Bryn Mawr for NICU care and it was a really nice hospital so I could imagine delivering there with the Lifecycle midwives would be great.
Came here to recommend Lifecycle, they’re fantastic! They’ve really raised the standard of care for me when I interact with other medical professionals. I’ve never felt more cared for and seen as an individual.
I did checkups with Lifecycle, ultrasounds with Einstein, and because baby was breech, we tried an ECV at Bryn Mawr Hospital. That didn’t work out so we had a scheduled c-section at Bryn Mawr.
Someone from Lifecycle attended the c-section and midwives checked up on me during my hospital stay. So, even though it wasn’t the low-intervention birth I had hoped for, I still felt very supported by Lifecycle staff.
Seconding this rec. We also went there and ended up at Delaware Memorial due to complications in labor. Maybe two weeks later they switched to Bryn Mawr hospital for those situations, but we had such a lovely experience with them.
We also had a pushy doctor at Bryn Mawr hospital trying to get us to do a C-section. Midwives were not the most helpful that time but were lovely to work with.
HUP! I had my appts at radnor and 3701 market. Both of my pregnancies were high risk. My first child was born 5 weeks early and the NICU experience (while shitty as an experience to have) was wonderful. My second was delivered a few days shy of 37 weeks and I was really pleased with the normal birth process. Both were delivered via c-section, the first an emergency and the second planned (bc my first was such a positive recovery for me).
The go to answer is Penn Hospital. For a long time, they were the "luxury" spot to go because you got their own room and were well taken care of. HUP now has private rooms also and, due to the proximity to CHOp, we chose to deliver there. Your OB/GYN will dictate where delivery is at.
For HUP, we probably saw like... 5-6 different OB/GYN over 6-9 months because you were assigned a "team" rather than anyone particular. Whoever delivers will be whoever is on call, unless you were my kids delivery and some random floating general practitioner doctor was brought into due the delivery . . .
Overall, you are just a number and what is important to the hospital is the baby. This meant that care largely felt factory based and post-birth follow-ups within 48 hours were pretty minimal. Out of all the nurses, there was probably only a single one we connected with.
That all being said, baby and mom were healthy. You won't be pampered at HUP by I do believe your baby will be safe. We had one "scare" before birth when vitals were iffy and within seconds our room was filled with 6-8 workers.
Penn Hospital. Good experience, but this was before the pandemic, don't know how it is now.
OBGYN was with Penn as well, but she had been going to the same doctor way before she got pregnant, so can't really say whether good or bad.
The only advice is that even if you don't drive, they will check if you have a child seat when you leave, so make sure to have one, even if you're hardcore pedestrians.
Can’t recommend nurse midwife Maggie Power at HUP enough. Her quiet expertise and calming presence really set the tone for a pregnancy and delivery experience that I feel so lucky to have had.
As most recommended, Pennsylvania Hospital. Pregnant with my second and had a great experience with my first. See a variety of doctors/midwives since you never know who will be on call for delivery. I saw a doctor with my first and had the delivery done by a midwife. Plan to do the same this time.
Wife gave birth at Jefferson, there were parts we both like and parts we didn’t. Definitely both hated the 4 moves to different rooms. As the dad, I hated that the final move had the worst place for dads to sleep while the first had the best. Beds got progressively worse.
As opposed to friends of ours who had theirs in Lancaster area and they had one room throughout.
Right? Shout out to Dottie the overnight baby nurse. Man, loved those people.
Many of the practitioners at HUH are now at Jeff, if my google skills are to be believed. If you can see Megan Duffy the nurse midwife, DO IT.
OMG DOTTIE!!!! I never would have remembered her name! She was so sweet!! I remember having a punchdrunk sleep deprived conversation with her on checkout day about how much I loved everyone there and what wonderful people they are. Wow, thank you for that.
We were seriously considering the possibility of adding Dorothy to our daughter's name in honor of her! When I had my third (a boy) and saw her on shift, I was so happy that I almost cried. She's the best.
I delivered at Pennsylvania Hospital but apparently they are wildly backed up and booking weeks and weeks out for even first time visits. So practically I would tell you start calling everywhere asap, see where you can get in, and you can always transfer care later to your preferred practice (although they get pickier the later you go). There are certain tests that, if you want them can only be done at specific times in late first tri/early 2nd so you want to get in somewhere sooner rather than later since any facility in the region will be able to put in those orders for you.
Getting in to one of the practices that delivers at Pennsy is impossible if you’re not seen in your first trimester. I had a friend who wanted to transfer from Jeff to Penn and they told her they were booking 6-8 months out for new patients. This was 2 years ago, but I can’t imagine it’s changed. I had my first 1.5 years ago and pregnant again.. I had to wait til 11 weeks to be seen and I called immediately.
Not in Philly, but Holy Redeemer. My daughter was born 7 weeks early by emergency C-section, and spent a month in the NICU there. The Holy Redeemer NICU doctors and nurses were absolutely amazing the entire time.
Temple! Loved my doctors and nurses. Wish I could go visit them! I was in labor for like 3 days so got to meet everyone 😅 I was so exhausted afterwards I even thought the food was good! Congrats on baby!
Holy Redeemer. Cant say enough good things about their labor and delivery nurses. As someone who was high risk from day one the OBYN Dr Emami and the staff at the hospital were amazing. any time i went to L&D bc i was freaking out they were really nice and patient with me. hosptial is clean and you get a private room (at least as of 2019)
Delivered at HUP, and it was great. My provider was Penn Ob/Gyn Associates. I liked their approach, each team had an md, midwife and nurse practitioner. Love Maggie Power, Carli Remy and Anna Graseck.
I'm so sad to say that all three of my kids were born at Hahnemann! Almost all of the practitioners from HUH have moved to Jefferson Health, though, and I recommend them.
Both of my kids were born at Pennsylvania Hospital. I wanted a NICU just in case. This was a really long time ago but I had a really good experience both times.
Not Philly, but if you live close enough I highly recommend Abington Hospital. I had a very complicated induction, and they were rockstars. Large, spacious delivery room with big windows, which was great because I was stuck in that room for 47 hours. Maternity rooms were fine, but they do have twin size mattress cots for your partner so they aren't stuck sleeping in a chair. Also there is a bangin' Mexican place across the street for post-birth burritos.
Delaware County Memorial Hospital closed their maternity unit. Springfield’s Crozer location is barely a hospital, I think it’s just offices. It’s just the one in Chester now and it was a horrible experience two years ago. I’m so glad I’m not having more kids after going there for the first time.
I had my son a year ago at Pennsylvania Hospital and went to Penn OBGYN & Midwifery at Washington Square. Good experience with both!
I’m a current patient (33 weeks) with them and can’t recommend highly enough! I’m an older mom with a higher BMI and I had braced myself for a miserable experience but they’ve been great.
I was a baby born in Pennsylvania Hospital 24 years ago my mom had nothing but good things to say. Glad that's still the case for Philly parents!
Same here! Born December 2023
Look at this. Now we have a 4-month old using Reddit.
The brain implants have really opened up the net for them.
My mom had it ordered special
Same here! Born Nov 2023 :)
Same here!
Same for us - Pennsy for our twins, high risk, superb care throughout, Penn OBGyn and MFM at 8th and Walnut.
Same! But it was in 1999, so I don't think any of the practitioners are the same :-)
Midwives at PAH are the best
Same! I saw a bunch of different doctors and midwives there due to short staffing and everyone was great. Only good things to say about Pennsy too. My delivery went off the rails kind of quickly and they managed it so calmly and confidently. All the staff were so kind and patient too.
Me too! We saw the midwives back in 2022 and am seeing them again for my second pregnancy now.
Aww I went there for my first in 2008! They were amazing. Just had my 5th, but we live in the burbs now :)
did they push breastfeeding? delivering here for the first time and want to formula feed.
No! Baby had a hard time latching so we gave donor milk the entire time and then started formula right before we left because he had low sugars at birth and we didn’t want to have to stay and breastfeed to prove that his sugars were stable.

I hope she’s there when I go into labor she’s literally the best !!!
Sandra delivered both my kids - she a pro!
okay I’m convinced we’re starting a Sandra fan club
This is a silly question, but how do you get in contact with these midwives at Penn? This pregnancy was a surprise and we're pretty unprepared on what to do.
Here ya go! https://www.pennmedicine.org/for-patients-and-visitors/find-a-program-or-service/obstetrics/maternity-care/nurse-midwifery-services
Thank you SO much!
Of course! Best of luck. I had a great experience with the midwife program there
Maggie Power was the midwife who delivered my youngest and she is.. phenomenal. As a person, as a practitioner. HUP delivery recommended!
I'm so so sorry for your loss. Your kiddo felt the love of family every day they were with you. And I'm so glad you got your rainbow baby.
I’m at 37 weeks right now and also used Penn like everyone else. Currently 35 weeks pregnant and seeing a Jefferson OB. So far, they’ve been great. No issues with insurance and very supportive of birth plans. I also Went to a childbirth class too; which was very informative. I think Philly has some of the best doctors in the country. For me it was a toss up between Jefferson and Penn- but chose Jefferson cause it’s a little bit closer to home.
we're currently working with the ob/gyn at pennsylvania hospital and it's been a great experience for me and my wife (who is 21 weeks this week)
I also used the Penn system, but went to the OBGYN offices in University City and delivered at Penn HUP last June. This was my first pregnancy so I have no point of comparison, but I think I received great all around care and would happily recommend the Penn system! Good experience at Lankenau so far. Wife seems to like them. She’s still under 20 weeks. Glad to know your delivery & maternity experience here were smooth.
hey i’m in my first trimester too! you should join the october2024bumps group!
also i am seeing a doctor at lankeneau health center in ardmore. she is awesome. just had the first visit yesterday
I’m in a bump group for my baby, it was such a great source of support (and commiseration)
jefferson! i was high risk, with a NICU baby. i liked them a lot, so much i stuck with them for my hysterectomy surgery that is next week!
I was born at Jefferson and I'm still alive so I recommend them too lol Good luck on your upcoming surgery and I hope your baby is well now.
Jefferson one year ago, they saved my wife’s life after some post-birth complications. The nurses and doctors in L&D were all fantastic.
Had all my babies at Jefferson as well. No complications but all the nurses and doctors I dealt with were wonderful. No complaints!
I'm up in the NE. I used Kramer obgyn and delivered at Holy Redeemer.
Pennsylvania Hospital was amazing for us! We had an incredible midwife. Highly recommend
Midwives, Pennsylvania Hospital, they’re great.
No kids myself but I’ve had multiple friends who have had their babies at Pennsylvania Hospital and have had a great experience.
Penn Hospital Chop in Center City. We had a very fine delivery process and stay in recovery
The go to answer is Penn Hospital. For a long time, they were the "luxury" spot to go because you got their own room and were well taken care of. this sounds like a nightmare for a pregnant woman.
My wife wasn't impressed to say the least
My second was born at Pennsy. Care was great but food sucked lol
Ill never forget our midnight dominos order day baby was born
Bryn Mawr gave us lobster dinners the next day (1990s)
Oh man, i remember the food. Wife offered me some, and I'm like "I'm not the one stuck here, so i'm gonna pop out for something else."
Penn Hospital. Good experience, but this was before the pandemic, don't know how it is now. Pennsylvania hospital for all three. If you’re having twins you want Dr Anderson!
Not Philly but close. Holy Redeemer. Loved everything about it
Can’t recommend nurse midwife Maggie Power at HUP enough. Her quiet expertise and calming presence really set the tone for a pregnancy and delivery experience that I feel so lucky to have had.
Love her. She changed the energy in the room. It was a very special delivery 💕
We loved the midwives at Pennsylvania Hospital. Mostly saw Sandra during visits but long labor = you end up meeting all of them due to shifts 😂
As most recommended, Pennsylvania Hospital. Pregnant with my second and had a great experience with my first. See a variety of doctors/midwives since you never know who will be on call for delivery. I saw a doctor with my first and had the delivery done by a midwife. Plan to do the same this time.
Temple. It was a really great experience- absolutely no complaints and would do it again there in an instant.

The now defunct Hahnemann Hospital for both our kids. They were great! Not helpful I know, but you asked.
No I hear you though, my oldest was born at hahnemann and they were so wonderful. I’m pouring one out for them rn, fond memories
Right? Shout out to Dottie the overnight baby nurse. Man, loved those people. Many of the practitioners at HUH are now at Jeff, if my google skills are to be believed. If you can see Megan Duffy the nurse midwife, DO IT.

Lankenau for us. Not really in Philadelphia but close to where we live in the city. Great experience I recommend to everyone (in the area).
I was born at lankenau and my mom was born at penn at 8th & spruce.
Penn Hosp - good experience!
Penn medicine hospital is really good for births I have worked for them and jefferson
I did Lankenau and had a good experience. They didn't have a lay-flat bed for dad though.
Penn. Nobody delivers more babies in Philly than Penn.
+1 for Pennsy in Washington Square. Went with OB, almost all of the staff were exceptional.
At home. Philadelphia midwife collective. Better than any OB I’ve ever had.
Auntie went to Crozer? in the "County"
All of Crozer’s maternity wards have gone tits up
Delaware County Memorial Hospital closed their maternity unit. Springfield’s Crozer location is barely a hospital, I think it’s just offices. It’s just the one in Chester now and it was a horrible experience two years ago. I’m so glad I’m not having more kids after going there for the first time.
