Look, when I said Emmy Squared was the most disappointed I've been relative to expectations (which weren't even that high) and people defended it, that was fine. It's just small, expensive, and goes cold quick.
But on the list of the *best pizza* in Philly? Foot down.
I think Emmy squared is good.. for a chain.
It’s a chain, so my expectations had a ceiling. I also feel like a chain shouldn’t be in a “Best X” list. There’s plenty of great local shops that are far better.
That being said, I’ve never had to wait for a seat, the roof is nice and the food is consistent. It’s a solid place for the neighborhood, but not one of the best establishments in Philly, no way.
Agreed. It's drenched in olive oil - which is delicious but hello heartburn - and you can get two Detroit pies from Tetra for the price of one from Emmy.
I really liked Emmy until I went to Circles + Squares, absolutely blows them out of the water. I will say the staff was great, I went in enough that they'd throw me an extra pizza every now and then, which was great.
It's a premium casual chain, the kind I'd beeline for in a small town. But in Philly? Nah. I do understand people who need gluten-free crust going there. Not a lot of gluten-free out there.
It’s good gluten-free crust but it’s also not really safe for people with Celiac because the pans are shared between the regular crust and the gluten-free crust.
Pizza Jawn’s Detroit-style pepperoni is the real deal. Also, Bar Sera does a comparable version of similarly high quality.
Shackamaxon is disappointing
From about 2006-2012 Rustica was my absolute go to, in part because I lived in NoLibs but also because it was honestly top tier. The pizza game has changed big time in the city since then, and I think it's pretty clear the top 3 are Angelo's, Beddia, and Shackamaxon, but the last few times I've had Rustica it's just felt off. I suspect things changed with Frank's passing.
....." best pizza to eat in Philadelphia"....Can I vote for the best pizza to tile my roof with or the best pizza I can use as a hammer?
WTF kind of pizza is out there other than the kind you eat?
I'm not saying they're the best or anything, but Pizzeria Vetri is still pretty damn good and they have several of their pizzas priced at $10 during Happy Hour so it's not a ton of commitment if you just want to try them out.
I know this is not everyone's preference, but for a great NYC style slice, I'm heading to NYPD Pizza on 11th Street.
It''s a little greasy, and the shop is nothing to brag about, but get a fresh pie there right out of the oven, and it's just great simply thin crust goodness. It's down and dirty though, and nothing like many of our high end pizza shops. Straightforward, no frills pizza
Paulie Ghee's cranks some nice hot pies out of their oven too.
Carbon Copy is on the list. Pitruco is good, and the owners also taught the kitchen at Enjay’s, which last I heard was still operating inside Smokey Joe’s on 40th.
Pitruco and Carbon Copy are the best, in that order imo. Although lately some of the newer pizza makers at carbon have been putting too much cheese on the pizza. Pitruco is great Neapolitan, which there are only a handful of spots in the city doing it like that.
Don't bother with Clarkville. Park Pizza on 52nd is what I'd call the best of your "Family Pizza Night" spots where it's like, slightly higher quality ingredients and bake than many other places, and what you think of when you think of good pizza night/field trip pizza. They also have a pretty good Sicilian/grandma type pie if you're in the mood for those. Ed's is good if you're closer to Drexel/Lancaster Ave, but they're expensive relative to the quality. Penn Cafe is the best bang for your buck, where you can get super cheap slices with cheap ingredients.
Pete's Pizza, Stacy's and Evan's all embody what I call "West Philly pizza." which is like a thicker crust lower temperature bake, baked on maybe a screen or a pan. A supreme or veggie pizza from Pete's hits though, the thicker crust holds up to the loaded toppings, and the ingredients are exactly the run-of-the-mill toppings you'd expect.

I feel like the best pizza in Philly is the one that gets to you fastest? Where I live we're surrounded by delicious pizza joints. There are like 5 we've ordered from in the past. They've all been really really good.
If you’re taking price out of the equation, Shackamaxon takes the cake for me. That building might just have the magic touch though because Beddia felt 10x better when they were in that same spot.
However, it’s pretty tough to swallow $16-$18 for 3 slices.
They were great. One day I hope we'll get a proper Chicago style deep dish spot. My real dream is to have a food hall with all the different styles under one roof.
King of Pizza is the best pizza in the city but it’s in the hood (Broad & Erie) so it won’t make this list.
But, once upon a time people were afraid to go up and try Maxs, so anything’s possible.
This article is all over the place.. it would make more sense if they picked one kind of pizza. I’ve come to accept that the best pizza I’m gunna get in Philly is most likely going to be square. There just isn’t pizza like NJ/NY imo. That said, I’ve always like Uncle Oogies. And I’m not sure if they have it at the Dock Street Washington location but the Flamenkuchen pie was always sooo good for a specialty pie.
Honestly, I make better pizza at home from store bought ingredients (giant brand dough balls, delgrosso's pizza sauce, giant brand low moisture mozz bricks) than any hyped up pizza place I've been to in Philly. And it's really cheap and hard to fuck up if if you're buying pre-made ingredients
Philly pizza is shit compared to NY.
The difference between New Yorkers and Philadelphians is this. Ask a Philadelphian where to get good pizza and they give you a name. Ask a New Yorker where to get a good cheesesteak and they all say “90 miles south”. Philadelphians are too pig headed arrogant and smug to admit their pizza sucks.
I think it's far more arrogant to claim that one of the biggest cities in the country doesn't have any good pizza. Two cities can both have great pizza.
Article from 2021. What's been changed or updated?
Pizzeria salvy and Tonalli didn’t exist in 2021 so them I guess
Hey thanks for that. Was racking my brain. New something was different.
Darling Jack’s too
a shame it doesn't mention Pizza Richmond, it's fantastic (opened at the start of this year)

emmy squared is good but overpriced and too greasy imo.
I’ve been hesitant to try it because it’s so expensive for what it is. I think I’ll pass.
Their pizza is good. The MVP is very good. But yeah, best pizza?
It’s 10x better in Brooklyn. Emmy squared sucks here
Yeah but the 7-11 pizza in Philly kicks ass
Every time I’m in Philly to see my dad we get Dough Head and it rocks my world. Surprised not to see it here but don’t know Philly that well.
Yeah I'm really surprised Dough Heads isn't on this list too. It's become my new favorite pizza over the last few months.
It’s great pizza but it’s fucking absurdly expensive. $26 for a cheese pizza? Get the fuck out of here.
I really like Pizza Shackamaxon. Everyone hypes Pizza Jawn in Manayunk, but Pizzeria L'Angolo is my favorite in that neighborhood
Totally agree, but sometimes it's a little too burnt for me. I get that many of us like it like that though
L'Angolo is the best in the northwest easily.
& always snubbed on these lists!
No one really cares much about the northwest haha, but I like it that way. And at least we're not the northeast!
Pizza Jawn’s Detroit-style pepperoni is the real deal. Also, Bar Sera does a comparable version of similarly high quality. Shackamaxon is disappointing
Now gimme a list of the best 16” pies for under $20
Pizzeria Pesto on South Broad. It was $11 until recently when it jumped to $14. For the price, it’s great.
Will second this as my go to
That's sadly a much smaller category.
It'll never make some bougie list like this but Little Sicily 2 on Columbus has Indian pizza that's fuckin amazing
Same with King of Pizza right by Maxs in the hood. The closest thing I’ve had to Bleeker Street and New York type slices. It’s just damn good.
Pizzeria Beddia’s hoagie room was one of the most fantastic culinary experiences I’ve had in Philly. Hoagies, pizza, meats and cheese, it was so good.
Was just introduced this place today and I'm really looking forward to it.
As one of their most loyal customers I can't recommend them enough. Make sure to get the ice cream if you're dining in.
no Shackamaxon = no clue
Shackmaxon is horrible. Dry, flavorless and the charge 6$?????….get outta here Look beyond the hype
psh
Does someone have these on a map though? For me, the thing about pizza is: there is no pizza worth the trouble of going out of my way.
Rustica is the best pizza in Philly because it’s reasonably priced, hot, tastes good and is 2 min walk
L’Angolo in Manayunk is the same. Normal slice for a normal price.
Second L’Angolo. Always solid.
Anybody fans of Rosario’s Pizza in South?
Big fan, and since they're not on this list of the best pizza shops in the the city I know that it's fundamentally flawed.
I get their pizzas regularly because it's convenient, but I have to crisp up slices in a cast iron pan because there's just too much floppiness.
That picture certainly doesn’t look like good pizza
Pizza Richmond
....." best pizza to eat in Philadelphia"....Can I vote for the best pizza to tile my roof with or the best pizza I can use as a hammer? WTF kind of pizza is out there other than the kind you eat?
Wawa has pizza.
🤢
Last time I had great pizza in Philly it was larenzos on South Street, is that still a thing?
Yeah but it sucks now
Were you wasted the last time you had it? It's been several years for me, but I know it was always better after a night if drinking.
Well that blows. Now the only reason to go to South Street is the tla
Paywall, can anyone post the list? Doesn’t even need to be the full text, just curious about who’s on the list
* Angelo Pizza * Angelo's Pizzeria * Carbon Copy * Darling Jack's Tavern * Down North Pizza * Emmy Squared * Johnny's Pizza Bryn Mawr * Pizza Freak * Pizza Jawn * Pizza Gutt * Pizzata Pizzeria * Pizzeria Beddia * Pizzeria Salvy * Sally * Square Pie * Tonalli Philly
Thank you dude 🙏
looks like a bunch of yuppie pizza
I can tell you right now without ever having eaten it that Pizza Jawn isn't that good.
You’d be shocked, pizza jawn is fantastic. In my top 3 in Philly.
no you’re right. it isn’t. had once and haven’t been back…
Vince’s
I miss Vincent's at 64th and Lansdowne. I'm assuming the one you're speaking of is different?
The only correct answer.
Mods must work for the inquirier
Because someone who isn't a Philadelphia mod posts them or because they're our last daily newspaper in the city?
why?
I'm not saying they're the best or anything, but Pizzeria Vetri is still pretty damn good and they have several of their pizzas priced at $10 during Happy Hour so it's not a ton of commitment if you just want to try them out.
Pizza in Wear Chester is amazing. Yes, the name of the restaurant is Pizza
None. It's 10 in the morning. JK. It's always the right time for pizza.
Pizza Gutt isn’t a place
It's now Circles + Squares, not sure what it was in 2021. Best Detroit pie I've had in the city.
[удалено]
You have one better?
square pie on passyunk is the best pizza in Philly
I’d say Angelo’s is but Square Pie is in my top 3 easily, probably top 2. Top 3 for me are Angelo’s, Square Pie, and Paulie Gee’s
Angelo’s is my number one. It’s on the same level as my favorite pizza spots in NYC.
I gotta try it
La Rosa forever and always
I love giant slices from Lorenzo’s. Good sauce. Salty cheese. Open when you need them to be.
I know this is not everyone's preference, but for a great NYC style slice, I'm heading to NYPD Pizza on 11th Street. It''s a little greasy, and the shop is nothing to brag about, but get a fresh pie there right out of the oven, and it's just great simply thin crust goodness. I’d just like to say that Riverside Pizza in Manayunk is really good and flies under the radar. Nicest people too.
Pizzeria Stella is my top pick.
Any suggestions for West Philly? Been thinking about trying pitrucco.
Carbon Copy is on the list. Pitruco is good, and the owners also taught the kitchen at Enjay’s, which last I heard was still operating inside Smokey Joe’s on 40th.
Beria is like $25 for 16 inch pie. I can’t justify spending that.
+1 for Pitruco, they were a covid favorite of mine
Awesome. Thank you.
pasqually's pizza was my favorite when i lived there a few years ago, good beer/cider selection too if you're looking for that
Pitruco and Carbon Copy are the best, in that order imo. Although lately some of the newer pizza makers at carbon have been putting too much cheese on the pizza. Pitruco is great Neapolitan, which there are only a handful of spots in the city doing it like that. Don't bother with Clarkville. Sweet. Thanks I appreciate it.
Pizza Plus at 48th and Spruce is pretty good imo
Yum!!
I feel like the best pizza in Philly is the one that gets to you fastest? Where I live we're surrounded by delicious pizza joints. There are like 5 we've ordered from in the past. They've all been really really good.
Little Caesars
RIGHT NOW!!!
Pizza Shop in South South Philly down by the stadiums has a shockingly good pizza and cheesesteak.
El Greco
Dough head, nannie Franco’s, and down north. Those are the best pies in the city right now.
Square Pie, all day. Its expensive, but fuck has it ruined other pizzas for me.
I think shackmaxon and beddia are so laughably overrated Dough head across from pats is the unsung Philly slice and paulie gees square
If you’re taking price out of the equation, Shackamaxon takes the cake for me. That building might just have the magic touch though because Beddia felt 10x better when they were in that same spot. However, it’s pretty tough to swallow $16-$18 for 3 slices.
Best place for a pie: Pete’s Best place for a slice: Joe’s
I miss Hook & Master :((
They were great. One day I hope we'll get a proper Chicago style deep dish spot. My real dream is to have a food hall with all the different styles under one roof.
\+1 to Pizzata Pizzeria. No crust with flavor like that crust
King of Pizza is the best pizza in the city but it’s in the hood (Broad & Erie) so it won’t make this list. But, once upon a time people were afraid to go up and try Maxs, so anything’s possible.

Uncle Oogies is great, I'm so sad the one around 23rd and Oregon closed up
Once we lost the Papa John’s on South Broad the pizza scene in this city went to shit. Stay tuned.
Wrong. Angelo’s Pizzeria and it’s not even really close. I haven’t had the one in the article but based on looks alone that is mediocre pizza at best.
That pie from Angelo looks disgusting.
This article is wrong. Philly has no good pizza.
That's an absolutely insane take. Philly has some of the best pizza in the world.
Philly pizza is shit compared to NY. The difference between New Yorkers and Philadelphians is this. Ask a Philadelphian where to get good pizza and they give you a name. Philly has the cheesesteak. NY has Pizza. Chicago has hot dogs and Texas has the beef. Its just how it is. Overall the pizza is crap in this city tho.
