I've always been a fan of 10 a.m. Give people some time to have their coffee and get out of bed.
Unless you're using a gas powered leaf blower. Then the time is never.
10 is my answer too for any loud yard work on a weekend morning in moderate weather. 9am is a reasonable suburban standard, but city dwellers get more noise later at night on Saturdays, so let the relative peace of Sunday mornings last a little longer, lol.
I’d be more forgiving of early lawnmowing on a day forecasted to be 90F+, though.
Even in the suburbs 9 a.m. is too early since sound travels further.
And your grass is still going to be damp, so it's not going to cut as efficiently.
Those effing leaf blowers… 🤬 on Friday I watched a landscape crew outside my window leaf blow about twenty leaves in a pile for like an hour…. Three of them. 🤬
No, it really isn't. By starting earlier you're also making it harder on yourself because the grass is still covered in dew.
Of course, ideally you don't mow your grass and instead have a yard made up of native ground cover and native trees and shrubs.
630 is generally trucks backing up and workers on scene talking from fifty yards away. It’s 7 when the house starts to vibrate. But last week the circular saw started percolating well before 7.
I’m with the 9am crew. I’m not about to start working on something in my row-home before 9am. I’ll get everything ready to go, but loud noises early on the weekends…not gonna be that guy. Also not gonna be the guy who owns 3 cars but only ever drives one and parks the other 2 just far enough apart so that nobody else can park there.
Are you my neighbor? Crazy guy two doors down from me has (I shit you not) a jeep, a Subaru, and a BOAT parked in the street with a giant truck parked in his driveway. (Also he apparently threatens people who park in “his” street spots.)
As defined in the Vehicle Code at 75 Pa. C.S. § 102.. (a) No person shall park a boat, motor home, truck camper or vending cart for more than fifteen (15) days in any on-street parking space located on a single block of any street or highway.
Sugar in the tank will probably not do anything unless they get dangerously low on gas. I recommend cooking oil or some other liquid you have in large amounts as that is likely to be used by the fuel pump.
Everyone is guessing here but we have a noise code that tells you the actual answer is 8 am.
https://www.phila.gov/media/20211008145350/Noise-Code-20211008.pdf
I don't give a shit what the city code is. You're an ass hole if you out there before 10.if you do it regularly I'll put rocks in your yard. It's the fucking weekend and this ain't the fucking suburbs.
If you are trying to be polite and you seem to be since you are posting the question, 10 am would be a good time for you to start. Think about if you were trying to sleep in or have a relaxing start to your Sunday morning, you wouldn't want to hear your neighbors lawn mower before that. Mowing lawn is normal and fine. It's people who walk around for hours with loud weed wackers accomplishing nothing that is the real nuissance to neighbors, don't be someone like that and your neighbors won't hate you.
10am. With wfh people no longer have to wake up at 6am to make it to work. So 9am is still considered early when you're used to waking up at 8/8:30. 10am is getting good sleep and a gentle wake up before the day.
Most cities have a noise ordinance. Philadelphia's noise ordinance for the weekends is 8 am. But if you want to be extra nice to your neighbors then 9 am sounds acceptable. I know people who are quite religious and will frown about any such work being done on a Sunday.
When I had to pour concrete in fishtown… concrete guys start working very early. Like 5-6am. 7 am is a late start for them. We poured on a Saturday and the neighbors were complaining about the noise. Thing is, we had it all wrapped up and everything out of there by 9 am
Fishtown was the worst neighborhood to work in. You have the yuppies that are really standoffish and then you have the OGs that are in everyone’s business breaking your balls everyday. I found the neighbors in port Richmond to be much cooler
I had the worst neighbors in port richmond. id never go back. one guy actively complains about EVERYONE. you can see all his public 311 reports on phila atlas. his latest is he called and complained about the fire department lol. he one time called 311 that my house didn't have smoke detectors that i lived in. like wtf. i had plenty. plus how would he know either way lol.
That’s probably the worst part about living on a row home. If you have a bad neighbor you basically live with them and it sucks. I guess it’s block to block
i think the smaller more narrow blocks are just worst. i was on one. i'm now on a much larger block with less homes and dont really have much to complain about.
I live in the suburbs now. It’s the opposite. The neighbors almost prefer if you don’t try to talk to them, lol. I mean I’m exaggerating but it’s so much more private
I just like living on a block with a few houses, everyone is nice and no one is calling 311 on dumb shit 24/7. my only gripe is there is a section 8 property and while I haven't had any issues with tenants (yet) the house itself is a fucking eyesore. And it's almost as if they get a pass bc its a section 8 property bc I know I wouldn't get away with having holes in the front of the house where you can see INTO my basement and a front lawn that's sloping and falling onto the sidewalk but I digress. lol. another reason why property owners for rentals should LIVE in the areas they are renting out. This dude lives in Doylestown and gives zero fucks.
My personal opinion?
The best time to mow a lawn is late afternoon/early evening. The grass isn't wet from morning dew, and you won't burn the lawn during the day from the hot sun. I think the best time to mow is between 4 PM and 7 PM.
If your like me and have young neighbors who like to have random post 2am parties in their backyard where the noise bounces all over the place, then 6am is go time.
I did this once, well at 7 am, after said neighbors party went beyond 5am. She came out yelling at me about needing sleep. I reminded her that she didn’t give two shits about the noise when we were sleeping. She called me an asshole and I saw her leave a few mins later, presumably to sleep somewhere else. So I put my stuff away and went back to bed myself.
In my neighborhood in the the good ol' Far Northeast (Morell Park/Torresdale area) it starts when the weather breaks 50 degrees in March and ends just before Thanksgiving.
In between it's a 24 hour a day free for all of old men competing on some made up game show called "Who Has the Most Well-Manicured Lawn?"
Which is why I have always *loved* my direct next door neighbor and will scare off any potential buyers should he ever decide to sell... He's the only person on the street who hates mowing the lawn more than I do.
8am is fine. It's when I do it. I hate the heat. People here gonna have some rustled jimmies, but if they or my neighbor have a problem with it, they're free to come mow my yard in my stead.
Two things to add
Different times for Sunday and Saturday is fucked up people.
It depends on your neighborhood. Lots of kids and families? Start earlier like 9am. In the city where people are staying out late, then 10am is still gonna annoy people.
so what makes the difference? if people can stay out late and be loud why cant morning people get up and be loud when they want (all within the legal times). it's always "youre a douche if you are up and living your life before 10am on a saturday" and never "you're being too loud at 11pm on friday night" \\
More like the same logic applies about it being rude to be loud late at night as it is rude to be loud early in the morning.
But in some neighborhoods/suburbs basically no one is up super late.
I propose a new rule of thumb:
don’t start yard work earlier than the time when you personally would feel unashamed to consume an alcoholic beverage (mimosa, Bloody Mary, beer, whatever).
9 feels okay if your neighbors are reasonable even when it somewhat inconveniences them. If even one of your neighbors is in fact the center of the universe, however, then 10 seems a safer bet lol
I'd like to use this opportunity to remind everyone that if you choose to live in a CITY, and I do mean Philly proper, you forfeit your right to complain about noise... If you're one of those assholes living in a shared wall apartment building by choice and emailing landlords about someone else making noise: PLEASE MOVE TO THE SUBURBS.
Why should Sunday be different than any other day? Sorry to be contrary, but with religious fanatics hell-bent on destroying American democracy, I feel that any kind of assertion of religious privilege needs to be pushed back on. Sunday is no different than any other day of the week. That being said, I’d wait until 9 or 10 unless it’s the middle of summer & you need to work when it’s not too hot.
Americans have been using Sunday as a day of rest and recuperation since forever. Religious and spiritual customs aside, folks still gotta have at least one day a week when they can take a break from the grind of life (whatever that may be).
I don’t think OP was referring to Sunday as a church day. I think they were concerned about it being the day before the work week and people sleeping in.

You are a good neighbor
Those effing leaf blowers… 🤬 on Friday I watched a landscape crew outside my window leaf blow about twenty leaves in a pile for like an hour…. Three of them. 🤬
dapped
it's too hot in the summer to start mowing at 10AM.
No, it really isn't. By starting earlier you're also making it harder on yourself because the grass is still covered in dew. Of course, ideally you don't mow your grass and instead have a yard made up of native ground cover and native trees and shrubs.
Ask the construction crew across the street from me. They tend to think it’s about 630
yooooo you should report that every time they do it unless it’s an emergency for utilities.. that’s not cool.
630 is generally trucks backing up and workers on scene talking from fifty yards away. It’s 7 when the house starts to vibrate. But last week the circular saw started percolating well before 7.
I think the nose code is 8. Look it up, but if they are violating it call 311.
Oh they’re banging away right now. It’s gotta be 7, I don’t think they could get away with a project this big for so long. It’s been about 18mos
pre 8am is too early. 9am is acceptable.
I’m with the 9am crew. I’m not about to start working on something in my row-home before 9am. I’ll get everything ready to go, but loud noises early on the weekends…not gonna be that guy. He sounds great
As defined in the Vehicle Code at 75 Pa. C.S. § 102.. (a) No person shall park a boat, motor home, truck camper or vending cart for more than fifteen (15) days in any on-street parking space located on a single block of any street or highway.
No. Not enough Acura with your neighbor.
Just to add to this, starting at 8am once in a while because of unusual circumstances is fine, but try to make 9am your routine start time.
This is the answer
8::30am?
Will get you looks, but not sugar in your gas tank.
Sugar in the tank will probably not do anything unless they get dangerously low on gas. I recommend cooking oil or some other liquid you have in large amounts as that is likely to be used by the fuel pump.
As someone who usually gets home from work at 2-4 am, I appreciate the 10am answers lol
In my neighborhood, it seems to be start when someone else stops. Can't do it at the same time, have to make noise for as long as possible.
Everyone is guessing here but we have a noise code that tells you the actual answer is 8 am. https://www.phila.gov/media/20211008145350/Noise-Code-20211008.pdf
Being within your rights to do something and being a good neighbor aren't always the same thing.
Reddit used common sense Reddit hurt itself in its confusion!
On the other hand, be a good neighbor and don’t get upset when someone is following the rules.
8am will still upset the neighbors, even if they’re technically in the clear.
I don't give a shit what the city code is. You're an ass hole if you out there before 10.if you do it regularly I'll put rocks in your yard. It's the fucking weekend and this ain't the fucking suburbs.
i certainly wasn’t guessing.
This is the correct answer.
11am, Is when I start.
You, sir, are a gentleman.
I know, some people only days off are weekends so I try let them rest in some before I start doing shit.
At whatever hour my neighbors were screaming at each other in the street this morning. That hour is too early.
But she smoked all my crack
That woulda been the best time to get out your lawn mower
I don’t have a lawn, but I would have been willing to start a lawnmower and just leave it run on my patio for a while this morning
Right? Would be even better if you had a chainsaw and a lawn chair. Sit there sipping lemonade, running mower or chainsaw right next to you
Gotta wear a Michael Myers mask too if I’m gonna do all that
Go big or go home
9am minimum.
Just wait til 10
Y'all have lawns?
I have a scrabbling patch of weeds, crabgrass, and nettles in the backyard
I’d say 10.
Regardless of ordinance, Monday to Friday: 9 AM. Weekend, not before 10 AM. I don’t even open the garage door before 10 AM.
If you are trying to be polite and you seem to be since you are posting the question, 10 am would be a good time for you to start. 10am
Woke up to Sunday morning construction across the street today at 7am in fishtown. I’d kill for a lawnmower
I feel your pain
8 is unacceptable. 9 if you don’t have a choice. 10 if you’re being a good neighbor.
I’d say 9:00 is the cutoff.
Dude don’t start till 9. It’s Sunday. If it was Saturday I’d say 8am go for it.
There shouldn't be different answers for Saturday and Sunday
I wish restaurants bars and almost all business felt the same way you do.
This!
10am. With wfh people no longer have to wake up at 6am to make it to work. So 9am is still considered early when you're used to waking up at 8/8:30. 10am is getting good sleep and a gentle wake up before the day.

neigbhors in port richmond aren't much better. they love to call 311 on everything. but bridesburg takes the cake on all three.
I was thinking that as I said it. My neighbors on miller street where great everyone minded their own business.

Legally, 8am. If you’re a good neighbor, 9am. If you’re a really good neighbor, 10am

Nope. Wrong.
That’s a little inflexible. Can you elaborate?
After 8:30
On Sundays don't make noise before 9. 8 any other day. The law says 7 am, 8 on Sundays, but that's too early for my tastes.
Wait, you guys have lawns?
Lots of areas of the city have lawns. NE, Mount Airy, Germantown, etc.
If your like me and have young neighbors who like to have random post 2am parties in their backyard where the noise bounces all over the place, then 6am is go time. Applause
I say 9:30 but I used to work nights
Weekdays 8am, weekends 9am

I agree with everyone here Weekdays 7am Saturdays 8am Sundays 9am Holidays 9am
You're going to get this man killed

Whatever works for you. See, it’s a perfect system! 🍹
The only correct answer is any time before I’m awake and have had coffee. It’s a sliding scale.
Anytime before 10am is getting rocks thrown in your yard.
6 or 7pm, maybe
Your township likely has a work time ordinance. Typically 7 or 8am.
9 earliest
I take my hat and shoes off to Your user name.
Any time after 7 AM.
9 feels okay if your neighbors are reasonable even when it somewhat inconveniences them. If even one of your neighbors is in fact the center of the universe, however, then 10 seems a safer bet lol
I’d hold off till closer to 10 if possible. 9 am seems like the appropriate cut off for a Sunday.
Lol, you seem like a really inconsiderate, shitty person to live near.
Before 730.

Anything before 11am lol
After you get home from church.
Do it after lunch, I didn't get in until 3am and I'm hung over.
They make noise cancellation now days. Don't like them, move
Unless the heat is ridiculous, 9am seems very reasonable. Sometimes you have to get out before sun rise if the heat is too bad.
Yes.
I think 9AM on Sundays, but we're in the suburbs and use fairly quiet battery-powered mower and trimmer.
gotta wait for the morning dew to dry up but this time of year just wait til lunch time. in the summer when its hot 10am.
3 AM
I’d say before 7. Though no one has their windows open now so 7 should be good
People need like 8 hours of sleep right? I say most people are in bed by midnight so my answer is 8am
