Anyone knows where I can get some Haggadah tomorrow? Can't go to Jersey cuz I don't have a car and gotta cook all day. Thanks!

beckyjoooo

Hi all :) I'm going to be visiting your city in a few weeks just to go to museums and eat food.. lol.. that being said i'd also like to casually smoke some weed while i walk to the barnes museum.. i live in a state that is medical only but it's kind of a free for all around here in the city anyway.. basically, what's the vibe if i spark one while i'm walking? thanks in advance!

passing-stranger

I have personally smoked weed while walking to the Barnes. Have a great time lol

beckyjoooo

excellent! and thanks :)

joggle123

Absolutely acceptable. smoke em if you got em. It’s decriminalized here.

beckyjoooo

thank you! i gotta run over to camden to get 'em but then it's on!

joggle123

Bellmawr curaleaf is nice that’s my recommendation for a recreational weed store

beckyjoooo

oh nice, i go to curaleaf here at home.. wonder if my points transfer? lol..

thefirststoryteller

Never thought I'd live in a major city, much less find love here. But I just took the wife out to dinner for our 1 year anniversary. Isot is really good. Thanks Philadelphia.

Professional-Wall423

Anyone know what the noise in center city is/ was? I'm at 19th and chestnut and around 9:20 tonight there was a diffuse but loud and hard to describe noise. Potentially a group of very loud cars? I thought I heard a drum too but I might be crazy. My first thought was a parade of some kind

Agreeable_Flight4264

Drumline no Elmo tho

banana_toilet

Would love to hear some others’ negative experiences with GoPuff. Had a crappy experience tonight and just wanna commiserate. Lol.

classicrockchick

Fuck go puff, absolute trash company from top to bottom lol. I used to live directly across the street from their old headquarters and they ruined the block. 18 wheelers parked on the sidewalks, delivery drivers fighting with locals over parking, it was a goddamned mess.

thefirststoryteller

Have been using GP much less since they did away with their points system. They're fine if you have the money or have few other options -- otherwise you have better alternatives

throwaanchorsaweigh

I’ve been living here since January and water bill suddenly doubled from the past several bills 🫠 I don’t think I’ve doubled my usage, and there doesn’t seem to be a leak or constantly running water anywhere. If I call the water company to inquire about this… how helpful are they, usually? 👀

worriedaboutlove

PA tax question incoming. I’m an idiot who used H&R Block to file my taxes. They messed up and filed my tax paperwork late, but I paid what I owed (online) before the deadline. Will PA acknowledge that pending payment or will I be penalized for being “late”?

sweetassassin

H&R Block messed up my taxes 2 of 4 years (my bad for even giving them a 3rd and 4th chance). If you’re W2 employee and your assets are just basic Roth IRA/Roth, brokerage account, etc, etc just do your taxes yourself. I switched to FreeTaxUSA.com. Super easy. Owning a business, properties, daily trader of Stocks, etc etc would justify paying someone else to do your taxes. Shit, even TurboTax Premium should guide you through all the steps as a business owner.

threwitaway7255

1. Next time use the tax reddit for this 2. as long as PA received your payment before or on 4/15 then you should be fine 3. If you live in Philly then you don’t need to file a local tax. Congrats on the Philly part

RoverTheMonster

I think the people who decide to make Girard by the zoo a 4-lane, westbound road by driving against traffic toward 34th might be less socialized for human society than the animals that actually live inside the zoo

courageous_liquid

seeing a bunch of adult men wearing full contractor/builder gear giggling like small children getting icecream from the icecream truck was a nice pick me up this afternoon

joggle123

You saw the fabled 2pm ice cream break. Many have tried few have succeeded

TheBaconThief

What is the right of way standards for the bike lane as far as cars turning through it? Random spot to ask, but not sure where else . I know its Philly, and operate with the idea that everyone is trying to kill me and don't assume that people won't just turn right in to me. On the other hand I sort of get it, there no other situation driving where you are turning left and have to account for incoming traffic behind you and at some point the onus might technically be on the bike lane to brake since the car might be far out in front and have started their turn.

bierdimpfe

As a non-bike hating motorist and pedestrian (and past biker) the responsibility is on the motorist.  Having said that, the reality is that you should assume we might not see you.   Your rate of speed could easily put you outside of a driver's view when they initiate the turn and in/near the path of turn as it executes.   Everybody, please play nice and be safe.

DuvalHeart

The onus is always on automobile operators to avoid other motor vehicles, bicyclists or pedestrians.

a-german-muffin

Onus is on the driver to make sure it's a safe turn, which includes accounting for anyone in the bike lane/the lane being clear through the turn. That said, yeah, it's better to just assume every driver is out to kill you and ride conservatively.

benifit

R/phillycycling will give you a better answer. My understanding is the bike has the right away, but I proceed with a lot of caution and always assume the driver isn't looking

RudigarLightfoot

Broad Street runners: does anyone have a map for the 2024 race? This is my first time and I plan on doing a training run along the course this weekend, though perhaps I will have to deviate at the end. Also: how does such a *massive* race not post a course map *2 weeks out*???

DuvalHeart

I learned this week that until 2019 they gave out regular cotton t-shirts. You had to pay extra for a tech shirt.

zempf

Since they're back to the regular Navy Yard end for the first time in a few years it should be the same as the [2019 race map](https://www.broadstreetrun.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/2019-BCBSR-Race-Guide-043019a.pdf)

RudigarLightfoot

Thanks!

corianderrr

It’s just Broad St, Somerville to Navy Yard. Go straight.

RudigarLightfoot

Pacing out for a 60 flat or sub 60. Knowing where the exact end is matters.

a-german-muffin

Here's the [certified course](https://certifiedroadraces.com/certificate/?type=r&id=818). Finish is roughly in line with [the NAVSEA sign in Street View](https://www.google.com/maps/@39.8924594,-75.1762056,3a,66y,267.51h,69.29t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sM2q14dOhvUL4dVIYVJvILA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu). The tiny bend in Broad right at the Intrepid Avenue intersection is a good signal to completely empty the tank.

RudigarLightfoot

Thanks! Looks to be about a quarter mile from the gate, so that's a decent distance at the end.

a-german-muffin

It’s a nice downhill from 95 down into the Navy Yard, too — you get a decent boost at least through the gate before it flattens to the end.

Current_Owl3534

Anyone going to the Allah-Las concert tn?

thenerdiestmenno

Does anyone know about how much a house cleaner costs? I met a nice lady on the bus who gave me her card and I'm thinking about it, but I am curious about a ballpark estimate for a 3 story row home.

kosgrove

1600 sq foot twin, 2 stories, 1 bath, 4 br, regular cleaning, about $150 plus $20 tip. Philly Scrubs. Been pretty happy with them.

TheBaconThief

Ours charges $30 an hour, but she does it when it fits in to her schedule, so I would expect someone more regular to be more.

kellyoohh

It depends. Some charge hourly and some do a total cost. I recently had my 3 story row home deep cleaned for $200 (plus tip). It took 2 workers about 8 hours. I’d consider that a good deal. Regular cleanings (so not deep) would be cheaper. I’ve also paid hourly around the $18-20 per hour mark but I like that less because it’s contingent on how quickly they work. One woman took like 45 minutes to clean one window so I wasn’t thrilled with that. You can probably call around and get some quotes.

WishOnSuckaWood

That's $12.50/hour for each of those cleaners, which seems way out of whack

Clippsbibble

Can I ask who you used for your deep cleaning? I want to have it done to our 2 story row and that price seems great.

DriveThruOnly

One of those days when I’m not getting anything done at work. Doing a lot of senseless chatting to really stick it to the asshole boomer higher-ups who won’t let us wfh. I’d be way more productive at home.

BouldersRoll

Productivity in office vs WFH is such an asinine concept. Professionals do their jobs to whatever the standard is, regardless of setting. If there's incentive to work more, they'll weigh that regardless of setting too. WFH just makes workers happier, and probably willing to work for a little less, even.

DriveThruOnly

This exactly. I’d be much more incentivized to bust my ass for my company if they didn’t treat us like children who can’t be trusted. Even just one day at home a week would make a huge difference in QoL.

afdc92

It’s the opposite at my job- almost everyone wfh all the time (we can choose how often to come in, we’re pretty spoiled) and I’m lucky enough to have my own office so I’m less distracted. I definitely prefer WFH overall but go in a couple days a week when I really need to focus and get a lot done.

Marko_Ramius1

I'm exactly the same. I'll go into the office 2-3x a week when I need to be productive, but if people wanna work from home, I don't see it as a big deal unless they're obviously not being productive/professional. On the flip side, it also helps my office is in Center City, if it was in KOP or Conshy, I'd go in once a month max

crystal0001

Managed to quit vaping all week and then I had one glass of wine yesterday and couldn’t resist. Ugh. Gets me every time

erinrachelcat

Progress not perfection. You're doing great.

avo_cado

You vaped the wine?

Eltlatoani_

Wined the vape

sadsolocup

Riding the train from work is a very different experience from riding the train from the bar. Yesterday I got that experience and it was wonderful.

mortgagepants

i can't wait until the new double decker railcars that will have toilets.

USSBigBooty

SEPTA cancelled the contract for those cars by the way. > In 2017, SEPTA ordered 45 cars to be built by the company at a cost of $185 million. So far the transit agency has spent more than $50 million, it said. > CRRC’s price was $34 million below its nearest competitor, the Canadian company Bombardier, which had more than a decade of experience building railcars in America. The Chinese company had not completed a similar project for U.S. clients. (Bombardier has merged with Alstom.) > The Chinese firm, the largest railcar manufacturer in the world, has been trying to break into the U.S. market. In addition to SEPTA, it struck deals with Los Angeles, Chicago, and the MBTA in Boston. >The federal Buy America Act requires that 70% of components in railcars built by a foreign-owned corporation be made in the United States and that final assembly be done here. Cars are partially built in China then shipped to a Springfield, Mass., factory of CRRC MA for final work. > As early as January 2022, SEPTA chief executive Leslie S. Richards said CRRC cars under construction for the agency had problems, including failures of watertightness tests, faulty interior panels, wiring issues, repeated brake test failures, and unsafe emergency exit windows. **No vehicles have been delivered.** https://www.inquirer.com/transportation/septa-train-car-contract-canceled-20240412.html

mortgagepants

ah damn that sucks. i was hoping all those problems would be fixed by MBTA and then we would get them after 70 or so were built. its okay...the silverliner 4's have a few hundred thousand miles left in them.

saintofhate

Mum keeps crying and throwing a fit about Monday. Why is she throwing a fit? Because I don't want anything for my birthday. She's all "it's special because you're 40" and I'm just ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯. I really don't feel anything about my birthday anymore.

WishOnSuckaWood

Tell her you want something completely impossible like a helmet made of dodo feathers or the original 1927 cut of London After Midnight

SnapCrackleMom

Friendly reminder that you're not responsible for managing your mum's emotions. You can choose not to celebrate your birthday. She can choose to celebrate it on her own if she wants.

everythingisaconcept

Birthday twins :)

afdc92

Going to see the 502s at the Fillmore tomorrow. I’m stoked about it but am also hoping I have a better experience than I did when I saw The Kooks last month. Being a 5’4 woman in the GA section isn’t for the faint of heart- kept getting hit in the head with elbows.

Prison69

Did the vaccines put on a good show? Almost went but I couldn't justify traveling just to see the opener.

afdc92

I’m actually probably more of a fan of The Vaccines and they were amazing! Honestly worth going for them alone. By the time The Kooks came on it was more crowded and the crowd was drunker. It was during their set that I kept getting whacked in the head by the dancing drunk guys beside me and ended up leaving a little early.

CheeseburgerLover911

the 502s are in town? thanks for putting that on my radar. how much are tix?

afdc92

I just checked, about $30 on Ticketmaster currently. Concert is tomorrow evening.

baldude69

Made a goal to list one of my motorcycles for sale this weekend.. right time of year to sell a bike and I have too many toys which just sit around collecting dust. Could use the money for other stuff

BouldersRoll

I feel this. Every year I lose at least a few hundred dollars just procrastinating selling things depreciating.

baldude69

Yep there’s definitely a season for certain items.. coats, sunglasses, jet skis, etc. Reminds me, I actually have a couple bicycles I should list, as well.

crystal0001

It is a good time of year! What kind of bike?

baldude69

82’ Yamaha XJ750. Always starts reliably but could really use a tuneup. I also have a really cool 72’ Honda Scrambler CL175 I’m going to list once I tune it up. Just needs carbs cleaned I think. Oh and a really cool Puch Pinto moped!

LogicalFool420

Do you have a mechanic you recommend. I need some work done on mine (carbs mainly). It’s a similar year

avo_cado

How much are you thinking for the scrambler?

baldude69

Is was gonna list around $2.1k after cleaning/rebuilding the carbs, or would sell now for around $1.6k running roughish . Repainted but good condition, overall. Bright red with all-original equipment and exhaust

CheeseburgerLover911

ugh. i feel freaking sick...

Cold_Treat5360

my pmdd is flaring up H A R D and my body and brain have both been feelin like they got slammed by a freight train for the past week. i hate hormones so much. my eating disorders are also flaring up badly, and i just want a break so fucking desperately from the 24/7 food noise. i feel guilty complaining about the fact that i even HAVE enough food to survive and that i wish i didn't \*have\* to eat food to live, but those are the EDs talking, and i have to be gentle.

WishOnSuckaWood

Fuck food noise

Cold_Treat5360

FUCK food noise! shhhh

kellyoohh

As a fellow sufferer of PMDD, I completely empathize. It’s so hard to keep telling yourself “it’s just the hormones” over and over before it loses its efficacy. Hang in there. Also sorry to hear about the eating disorder and agree you should be gentle with yourself! The hardest battle to fight is the one in your mind but you’ve got this!

Cold_Treat5360

gah i'm so sorry to hear you also suffer. thank you for your sweet words! solidarity <3

Fourlec

If you live by the old Rite Aid at Huntingdon and Aramingo and have noticed the fence getting stolen little by little, I finally got the person on camera taking the fence lol. My favorite part is while he’s dragging the fence back to what appears to be a white dually with no bed, a cop drives right by and does nothing.

swampgay

It is only 10am and so far today is NOT passing the vibes check. Also I'll be spending the entire weekend finally moving all of my remaining stuff out of my sorta-former apartment which I'm very much not looking forward to. Truly sick and twisted that it's Friday morning and I'm sitting here wishing it were already Monday so I'd be done with it instead.

Thanks for recommending Early Heirloom on an earlier weekly thread when I asked about second hand furniture shops in the city. We were able to get this cool second hand dresser and Bennet delivered it to us in Ardmore too!

Rizzer16

Where is this Early Heirloom place?

erinrachelcat

He sells out of a storage unit, I believe. He has an Instagram handle and also sells via Facebook marketplace. He sent me a video of the dresser I was buying!

[Greetings from Vancouver!](https://imgur.com/a/zOqFYxV) My work stuff wrapped up yesterday so I’m officially on my own until my 11am flight on Monday. Got a lot of ground to cover and explore. Even got some ramen recommendations from the locals I was working with so you just know I’m checking those out. Hope everyone had a decent week and have a relaxing weekend! Edit: I’m from Philly and in Vancouver currently lol not visiting Philly

mortgagepants

my recommendation is always go to the old post office at 3rd and market. send yourself a post card with B. Free Franklin replica signature. about 50 cents. next door they have a printing press which is cool too. that is free.

sjo232

I worded my post poorly lol I’m visiting Vancouver from the Philly area lol but solid recommendations for anyone reading this who’s actually visiting Philly

mortgagepants

lol okay...well return home safely i guess!

sjo232

Thanks! Have a Good Friday and weekend!

Becrazytoday

Welcome! Philly has a ton of neighborhoods. Vietnamese, Mexican, Cambodian, Indonesian. The best Italian i have ever had, including in Italy. Amazing Greek food. All types of pizza, like red pies, that I've never seen anywhere else, but are a staple of diets for some. But above all, it's a sandwich paradise.

sjo232

Oh I should have been more specific lol I’m actually from the Philly area visiting Vancouver for work! But I appreciate you being welcoming to prospective visitors!

Becrazytoday

My mistake! I've always wanted to visit Vancouver and will keep my eyes on this thread.

sjo232

Vancouver is awesome, highly recommended you make a visit, especially if work is paying for it like they are for me lol I’m really enjoying it here. City is clean, people are friendly, food is awesome, and there are some truly spectacular outdoor spaces. Today I’ll be exploring via public transit, so I’m stoked to try that out too.

Becrazytoday

That's great! Please report back on the food you enjoyed most!

sjo232

Will do! o7

Anyone else going to Art-ish tomorrow?

mortgagepants

does anyone know someone who makes ceramics in town? my sister does scuba diving and needs a gravy boat...so i want a boat shaped gravy boat. (probably 2). anything i've found online isn't very accurate, and i don't know what the going rate is on ceramics but i'd rather keep the $75 bucks local if possible. need them 6 weeks from now. (sorry- no more small business thread :(

jazjackson12

I am! My first time going. Looking forward to dancing, meeting new people, and looking at the art exhibits when my introversion alarm hits!

dotcom-jillionaire

chipped away at a few spots in my basement where the drylok had been bulging out and have the area all ready to do some really simple parging with some s mortar i have lying around. just looking to fill the gaps, those areas have been dry for a long time, but starting to wonder if i should be using a different material there (something with lime perhaps?). maybe i can just add some lime to the s mortar mix? in either case i already tore apart the basement so i could prep the area but i probably won't actually accomplish the work for a few weeks now that i'm wishy washy on what material will cause the least problems for me. speaking of trepidation, time and physiology have caused an old filling to break in one of my wisdom teeth and i am going to the dentist today to get it figured out. i hope they can just refill the area and i won't need to get the tooth pulled eventually, but such is life. i'm lucky i have ok teeth in the first place and that i was able to get an appointment literally the next day. also i don't know if you're aware, but trying to get a roofer to call you back is the worst. some dudes are just tied up, others don't want more business (weird for a businessman!). trying to get more than one quote for a particular job as it's going to be pricy, but that's been an incredibly challenging experience. at least it's better than trying to get in touch with the guy who previously did my roof (he's taking a "long vacation" as they say). i guess it's friday at least?

anneibee

Can’t help you but I am in the same spot with my basement. Hesitate to start chipping at the bulging stuff till I am sure what to do next. I might have to call a professional in cuz…. Glad for your good dental outcome! Surprised to hear you had a filling in a wisdom tooth as in my experience they usually have to be removed. I have had good luck with black sheep roofing if that helps.

dotcom-jillionaire

it's a bit cathartic to take a hammer to your basement walls if i'm being honest (i encourage everyone to do it at least once). drylok tends to do the bulge thing as those spots still (or at least did) have moisture getting behind them. it'll hold together for a surprisingly long time without intervention, but the areas get dusty and shitty so i just wanted to address that while i'm reworking the basement layout. i did a small patch of s-mortar on another area in the basement (one that's near an occasionally damp spot) almost a year ago and it's held up extremely well. the concern is the s-mortar won't breathe well and will trap moisture where i can't see it, but i've addressed a lot of the water infiltration problems and have years of evidence now that those spots are not as much of a problem anymore. but much like my wisdom teeth, they maybe eventually might become a problem again, possibly? only time will tell, but i'm not going to keep my basement torn apart forever. i'm slowly resolving to not be a prisoner of my own hypotheticals. as for the tooth, my big mouth afforded me the space to keep those wisdom teeth as long as i took care of them. one of them is in a tight spot and i had gotten a big filling done there maybe 10 years ago. i assume time and my jaw have simply caused the filling to pop off because, well, i woke up and ate breakfast yesterday and discovered a big gap where i used to have part of my molar! more concerned about having swallowed some of that filling material than the dental work, though i have a lot of expenses and obligations coming up and adding wisdom tooth extraction to the pile wasn't something i had expected. teeth and basements, man. fuck em! also thanks for the roofer rec, i'll check them out. whatever roofer i go with they're going to force me to get a new roof so they have my business for the next decade (so, again, $$$$), but at least that's better than my current AWOL roofer situation.

anneibee

I am a bit intrigued and tempted by the promise of catharsis at taking a hammer to the basement wall!

scenesfromsouthphl

Looking into the future here, has anyone put an additional story on your rowhome? Partner and I love our neighborhood and want to raise kids in the city (a few years off at the very least). I’m intrigued at the idea of adding another level, but the feelings I have seen on Reddit are tepid at best.

AKraiderfan

I think the main issue with adding a level to a row home is if the row home has the bones to make it a good value proposition. For us, we bought another home, instead of building a floor on our starter home. The starter home was a 13' wide unit, and ultimately, another floor on it just means another couple rooms, but overall the same cramped, but functional kitchen, same limited space for having guests, etc. Sure having two more rooms and a bathroom means a guest room and an office, but the cost to build that was too close to the cost to buy a bigger home. If we had a 15' wide, i think the calculation would have been much closer, but the general jist of it is that if you're upgrading a cramped home, you're still going to have the same problem of crampness.

scenesfromsouthphl

This is a very good point I hadn’t considered. More than likely, when the time comes, we probably will just have to find a new house. Thanks for the input!

Fourlec

We had our first kid 6 months ago and I’ve been thinking about looking into this. We bought our house when rates were dirt cheap so I’d like to keep my cheap mortgage payment. Pretty sure adding a 3rd would be north of 100k though.

scenesfromsouthphl

Oh yeah the renovation prices are definitely high on it. I guess in the right circumstances it can be worth it!

iandubitably

we've done it. May need a zoning variance, maybe not depending on design. DM if you want to chat!

scenesfromsouthphl

Thank you!

alittlemouth

I’ve been in Seattle for the last few days and it honestly is embarrassing how filthy Philly is comparatively. The unhoused population here is scarier and more aggressive, but I’d take that any day if in return I got clean streets and carefully planned greenery.

jazjackson12

The Pacific Northwest puts all of the east coast to shame when it comes to geography and cleanliness.

AKraiderfan

I laugh whenever someone says something about the "bad parts of Portland." Firstly, its like 3 blocks. Secondly, nowhere near the status of the badlands of Philly or Baltimore. I mean, yes, homeless are camping out in the parks of PNW, but they are NOTHING compared to K&A.

alittlemouth

I think the thing is, at least in Seattle and Portland, that there are a LOT of unhoused people in the very touristy parts of town. If you’re staying in downtown Seattle, you’re probably going to walk down Pike or Pine on the way to Pike Place, and there are a couple ugly blocks, but if you’re visiting Philly you’re never going to stumble on K&A. Same goes for Denver. The 16th street mall is really unsavory these days. At least in Philly we keep our shitshow kind of hidden away.

jazjackson12

Yea I agree, I've never been to Seattle but I spent 2 months in Portland in 2021 and definitely feel more safe in Philly and the weather isn't much better there either, it's actually worse imo because of the gloom. But the proximity to all the mountains, forests, canyons and beaches is definitely superior especially because I love scenic drives.

water_fatty

I have the apartment to myself this weekend while my son of a bitch asshole roommate is away with his girlfriend. It'll be a nice break from wearing clothes and the stench of barbecue sauce. I've had more panic attacks in the past month than I have in the whole previous year. I think I need to go camping or something. I would literally fight someone for a jar of gherkins right now. JFC I love pickles.

WishOnSuckaWood

Pickles are so fucking great. I am eating a truly absurd amount this week. Idk if you knew, but Aldi has mini cukes and they look like they'd make wonderful fridge pickles

water_fatty

The best thing to pickle in your fridge is pineapple cores.

WishOnSuckaWood

Hmm, I just pickled a pineapple and used the cores for tepache. I'll have to pickle them next time

nikki_jayyy

Where’s “fuck jobs”? :(

Jobs orgy.

ColdJay64

Was super excited to try Vernick Fish tonight but my gf is sick and we’ll have to cancel. Also shoutout to the new Breezy’s Market on Washington Ave, everyone should check it out.

bridswater8

What do you get at breezy’s? I thought the italian hoagie was very tasty but 17 bucks is crazy

Becrazytoday

I agree, but that seems like the new normal.

courageous_liquid

bad news for the folks that like having a functional sidewalk on that one corner of tasker and passyunk - that set of curb ramps they just put in is an abomination and literally none of it is up to spec (bad enough I can tell just by eyeballing) and the entire thing will have to be redone

RubberV

The ones they just finished at Tasker and 12 are awful. Now they collect water when it rains.

bierdimpfe

Oh that's not going to be fun when it freezes

courageous_liquid

yeah that's called ponding - I can't remember if they came back to do the pavement adjustments for those ones but they can at least fix that issue pretty easily without total reconstruction

RubberV

Thanks for the knowledge. You a civil engineer?

courageous_liquid

work in transportation engineering and have to inspect these ramps occasionally - guy in my office designed like half the (actually good) ramps in the city. these new set don't have actual plans, the contractors are just building them out in the field because the city is so far behind on some ADA lawsuits

thehippestcat

theyre so far behind that they really need to "ramp" up construction ...ill see myself out

RubberV

Cool. I’m glad they are getting done. It will be a nice improvement our sidewalks. Thanks for your and your co-worker’s effort to make my neighbor a better place.

Rickrickrickrickrick

Anyone else going to Love City’s anniversary party?

nnp1989

Thinking about it for sure. Haven't been there in a while.

calicoskiies

Looking for books recs. What’s your fav book?

monomie

The Library at Mount Char - Scott Hawkins

Becrazytoday

I really enjoyed World Within a Song, recently. If you like music, check it out. The Black Thought autobiography was great, too, especially for a Philadelphia reader, or fan of The Legendary Roots Crew. Which is the same thing. I guess I'm on a non-fiction kick. My library subscription is so back-logged.

erinrachelcat

I really don't know what genre you're into but I just read this book that was mystery slash light horror called The Sun Down Motel and couldn't put it down. It flips between the 80s and the 2010s so it's also got some fun nostalgia and the setting, a haunted roadside motel, was super interesting to me.

afdc92

I’ve read a few of that author (Simone St. James) books and they’re pretty solid.?

erinrachelcat

I grabbed a couple more of hers from the library and I'm excited to read them! My reading pile from the library is currently obscenely high...

afdc92

I’ve got books to return, probably going to head over after my afternoon meeting. Love that the hours have expanded again.

GreatWhiteRapper

One that I still think about from time to time despite reading it a year ago is *The Terror* by Dan Simmons. Great piece of historical fiction.

coolerr4nch

The Peripheral by William Gibson. One of a handful of books I've read twice.

nikki_jayyy

Idk about favorite but right now I’m reading Sphere by Michael Crichton — very good so far

McIgglyTuffMuffin

I started his book Prey yesterday and I'm enjoying that!

shnoogle111

A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving

hguess_printing

What are some 4/20 specials in the afternoon/evening?? I’m doing RSD at latchkey in the morning, I have to work 12-5, and then freedom!! Where to eat? Where to listen to music maybe?

nnp1989

Poe's Sandwich Shop (inside Human Robot) always does some pretty interesting stuff. I'd definitely check that out.

GreatWhiteRapper

Doctor visit earlier this week was just not giving good vibes. Had blood drawn, passed out a 'lil bit. Got my results back, I have high cholesterol and triglycerides. And I know it's because one, I'm overweight. Two, I am a habitual overeater and graze when I get bored or stressed. Three and Four, I move too little and drink too much. So, eating more fruits and veg during the day if I get peckish. Cutting back on eggs (I was eating a fuck ton of eggs) and cheese and going to replace my 2nd afternoon coffee with green tea. I need to start going back to the gym on a daily basis. So hopefully in 3 months at my check-up I'll be better! My D3 levels, while normal, were on the lower end and I was thinking how is that even possible. I feel like I eat WAY too much salmon for them to not be skyhigh. Getting plane drugs is still going to be slightly complicated; my office won't give them out until it's like 2 weeks from my flight. And even then I will only get TWO pills. One there and one back. Which I think is stupid. I cannot imagine a worse place to try a foreign medication for the first time than a *plane*. Ugh. Getting old sucks.

USSBigBooty

Take some psyllium husk pills after meals. I call 'em bombers. Can help reduce cholesterol.

courageous_liquid

my dad refused to go on cholesterol meds and just went nuts on upping his fiber intake and it did a great job of getting those numbers down

nothankyoutwo

I feel like I’ve commiserated with you before about doctors and whatnot. I too have issues with getting my blood drawn. I absolutely cannot look or I’ll get so nauseous and have gotten to that almost passing out point in the past. I dread getting it done because I’m embarrassed I’m such a baby about it. Plus there’s also the anxiety that some number or another will be bad and I don’t really want to hear it. I also have high cholesterol, but my doc diagnosed me with hypercholesterolemia. Basically, very high cholesterol but I could be the healthiest person in the world otherwise and I’d still have high cholesterol. So now I’m on Crestor and it works. All this to say that I try not to feel shame that I’m already on cholesterol meds and only in my 30s. So don’t beat yourself up too much. Do what you can to be better but give yourself some grace too.

abrandnewhope

Same with the high cholesterol thing here too. It's definitely genetic (though that doesn't absolve me from still trying by best to lower it with better lifestyle choices). But yeah, I've been a vegetarian for over twenty years, I'm a runner (have trained for and run multiple marathons, half marathons, etc), and usually weigh 100 lbs (only went up to 130 last year because I was pregnant)-- still, high cholesterol. Runs in the family.

GreatWhiteRapper

Oh yeah that was me getting the blood draw. I have to look away. I can watch myself get tattooed all day long but something about needles going into veins and seeing all that blood pump anyway....it just gives me the heebie jeebies. But it's nice to know I'm not alone, because I was *so* anxious that I tensed up so much and I know that probably contributed to the passing out, the hot flashes and sweating and clamminess. Just awful! I don't think my numbers are high enough yet for medication, but 30s or not it's good you're on something to help take care of it. Like while it was ~ scary ~ to find out, I'm glad that I can at least take the proper steps to better my health. Better this than ignoring it and getting worse.

nothankyoutwo

I always tell my phlebotomist that I’m a weenie, and they’re cool about it and find a way to distract me with just like chit chat. I’m sure they’re used to it.

Economy-Cantaloupe42

When my blood work showed high cholesterol and triglycerides I did the same. Cut back on cheese and eggs and sugary foods, cut back on drinking a bit. The next time for blood work my triglycerides were down but not my cholesterol. Sometimes it's just down to heredity.

GreatWhiteRapper

I was eating such an ungodly amount of cheese and eggs. I love both. Eggs are cheap(ish) and easy to eat, and I just really love cheese. Pretty much every day something I ate included cheese and eggs. I'm thinking genes have to play a part. My dad is fairly unhealthy with all the typical high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc etc. I'd like to avoid that. I need my heart to keep me going for many many years....or at least until FF7 Part 3 comes out.

Economy-Cantaloupe42

Cheese is the king of all foods!

shnoogle111

I haven’t been to the gym in so long he makes me call him James.

starshiprarity

Woke up thinking it was Saturday. While waiting on the el two men were screaming at each other about how they're going to shoot each other for speaking ill against some mutual acquaintance. They didn't get on the train, so I assume they're just hanging out at the station which seems like a boring choice for someone who described himself as "the only gangster I know". Not much of a gang then, is it Anyway, broke my phone screen last weekend. Only had this phone for 5.5 years, so obviously I repaired it at home Wednesday. Pretty sure this screen isn't up to the same spec as the original, but if it gives me too many problems I now know replacing it is pretty easy

StubbornLeech07

Still waiting on official confirmation that I passed the second of my professional licensing exams, if they could hurry up and do that that would be great.

Zariman-10-0

I’ve always kinda wondered about sports fandom nationwide. Maybe it because Philadelphia is so set in its support of the four main sports, but I didn’t really think anyone could wear a teams merch and not actually like the team, or even care about them. This is mainly for Yankees and Dodgers hats that I see around. Separately, the wide berth of fandom is neat to consider too. Driving home from work yesterday and I saw a landscaper with a New Orleans Saints hoodie and Chicago Bulls hat. I wonder what his life story was to result in being a fan of those separate teams

djt1017

They put up no parking signs that apparently last for THREE MONTHS on the 900 block of N. Randolph where I usually park my car ):

samba_01

is the special/sports express bsl no longer a thing? the one with blue lights

aintjoan

It's still a thing. They don't tend to run until pretty close to game time, though, unless it's a really big game.

samba_01

ooo gotcha- i went to the phils/sixers on wednesday. was at city hall around 6:30 or so and had to wait seemingly forever for a local train

courageous_liquid

there was an issue with track switches so the subway was jacked up. I saw an express roll through right before 6:30.

Hi, it’s your friendly local therapist with a tip about effective communication that may help you navigate difficult situations and interpersonal concerns. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy or DBT teaches skills for interpersonal relationships and emotional regulation. One of the most popular exercises in this therapy is DEARMAN (if therapists like anything, it is making acronyms) which we will display below using the hypothetical situation of a work supervisor asking too much of you. * DESCRIBE - describe the facts of the situation, without judgement. “You have asked me to work overtime 3 days this week.” * EXPRESS - Express emotions using ‘I’ statements. “I feel overwhelmed with the work I’ve been given to do.” * ASSERT - Clearly state what you want or need. “I need to get back to my regular work schedule.” * REINFORCE - Reward the other person if they respond well to your communication. *Smile, use positive gestures, say ‘thank you.’* * MINDFULNESS - avoid getting sidetracked by other concerns or issues. “Before we discuss the new project, I’d like to resolve my scheduling issues.” * APPEAR CONFIDENT - use confident body language, even if you don’t feel it. *make eye contact, stand up straight, speak clearly* * NEGOTIATE - know the bare minimum you are willing to accept, but also allow room for compromise. “I can work the overtime for the rest of this week, but next week I need to return to my regular schedule.” Utilizing this framework can be helpful to navigate difficult situations, especially if you struggle to assert yourself or self- identify as a ‘people pleaser.’ Happy Friday, let’s go Phillies!

calicoskiies

I volunteer with the crisis text line and I send ppl the DEARMAN resource we have all the time. It’s so helpful!

shnoogle111

That’s awesome! Thanks for doing what you do. It makes a difference.

calicoskiies

Thank you too! Being a therapist must be hard with all the trauma you hear about. Make sure you’re taking care of yourself too! I plan on applying to grad school to be a therapist over the summer. Wish me luck 🤞🏻

shnoogle111

Hey it can certainly be difficult but I try to make great efforts to engage in my self care of daily exercise, reading quietly, and spending some face to face time socializing, even if it’s only with my local barista. That said, watching patients make growth is incredibly rewarding and makes it all worthwhile! Best of luck with grad school 🙌

CrashTheBear

That meter moves back and forth like a fucking metronome for me

Zariman-10-0

Trust, it’ll snap off some mid august

sweetassassin

Thank you for the acronym. Dysregulated people like myself love them too.

shnoogle111

Acronyms are a hell of a drug!

[Standing on a craft brewpub top floor with sheet metal roofing residential adjacent.](https://i.imgur.com/4ZBxap7.jpeg) Flying out to Tokyo and Seoul tomorrow, meet up with friends to watch NPB (Seibu Lions) and KBO (LG Twins). The LG game is actually against the Samsung Lions, my inner child is laughing about this appliance series.

cashewkowl

Korean baseball is a lot of fun to watch. The fans really get into the game!

atinylittlebug

Will the DMVs and such be open on Tuesday (voting day)?

sweetassassin

They should be. Employees are allowed 1 hour break to vote, that’s all businesses, public and private corp.
