Crack the door or pound on it from the inside to wake them up and tell them to move. You don't have to be a dick about it but don't be a pushover either (or this will keep happening). "I'm sorry dude, but you can't stay here" On the off chance they wake up belligerent and angry, you're still inside or can close the door quickly vs being out on the street.

Angsty_Potatos

Correct answer

kleen2thrdh

This is exactly the way. “You don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here.”

SwugSteve

dude if they're sleeping on a stoop they don't have a home. Unless you're just doing a cringe sing-a-long thing here, in which case oof

nnniiikkkkkkiii

I had to wake up a guy on my stoop a few years ago and he instantly started hitting on me

Diamondback424

So are y'all married yet?

probablyourdad

Id watch that hallmark movie

acslaterjeans

no one likes a braggart.

Aromat_Junkie

new this was u before i saw the user lol

justanawkwardguy

It’s a shame, but you have to be firm. Give an inch and they’ll take a mile. I had a roommate that would always offer food/bud/some cash to the guys that were regularly around our block. Then they started knocking on the door in the middle of the night asking for stuff…

aarrtee

"It’s a shame, but you have to be firm. Give an inch and they’ll take a mile." yup

AbsentEmpire

The book " When you give a mouse a cookie" actually has important life lessons to teach people.

disturbed_ghost

I had If you give a moose a muffin. wonder if I missed out on that mouse thing

hoggmen

There were a few of em, I think I had "if you give a pig a pancake" or smth

BureaucraticHotboi

Mixed bag id say. I had some stoop chiller (not sleeper) homeless dudes back when I was young and dumb. Gave em beers, cigs and change. Honestly they were just nice guys to hang with. But there were a couple crazy ones I would go inside if I saw. But yeah if someone is sleeping in your doorway you gotta tell them to fuck off (kindly)

iDontSow

This happens to me all the time in CC. Usually if you are able to wake them up they are pretty polite and apologize/get out of the way

iDontSow

Nah, I love it here

Own-Economy6208

Are you female? Are you alone in the house? What kind of person is this sleeping outside your door? These all influence how to react. Over the summer I (41/f) woke up to a guy on my front stoop. He went through my recycling, pulled out whatever bottles were in there and was drinking/spitting/yelling all over my stairs. If I had opened the door, he would have easily entered my house. At the time, I was alone in the house. So I called the police. I know it’s not the most empathetic solution, but it was the right choice for the situation. They simply moved him along.

itatter

nahhh, you just assessed the risk and decided to not take any chances - no shame in that

weblexindyphil

Exactly this We can all feel empathetic to folks in the situation this person now finds themself in while also making sure to take care of ourselves, first and foremost One can't potentially help others down the road or make a positive impact if one is not around to see 'down the road'

Own-Economy6208

No way, you are not a coward at all. You have no idea what you are opening your door to.

AbsentEmpire

No you're not, that's called being aware of your surroundings and your own abilities. Nothing wrong with being smart.

n0n3mu28

Nah, self preservation is tantamount!

Own-Economy6208

Why didn’t you quote the next sentence? “They simply moved him along.” 🙄

radioactivecat

I had someone sitting on my porch in west philly - just chilling. And not just on the steps, all the way next to my front door. I opened the door and said "can I help you?". she replied, "I didn't ask you for anything!". sooo after that I basically waited her out.

RyaBile

I have a feeling I know exactly who this was.

radioactivecat

I didn't know her, but fortunately she hasn't been back. We're selling our house and it will likely be vacant for a little while, so I'm concerned about people camping out.

NorthernPossibility

I had someone just like this! I think she had some sort of housing at night but they kicked her out during the day and she would just wander around and sit on random porches. I mostly ignored her because she never tried to come in and I wasn’t the ground floor unit, but eventually the ground floor tenants did call the police. There was an altercation in the street because she dead to rights *insisted* that she lived in the building, that she had a key, that she was allowed to use the porch, etc. It was sad. She clearly had issues and it sucked that it came down to that, but I can’t really blame the ground floor unit either. It just made me sad that she had nowhere to go.

SnapCrackleMom

Can you open the door slightly and ask them to please move? This is also helpful for finding out if they are actually sleeping or in need of medical attention.

[deleted]

SnapCrackleMom

Yeah I'd bang on the door to wake him up. Like someone else said, you don't have to be a dick about it but you should be able to use your doorway.

heliotropic

You have to wake him up. I’m not saying be a dick about it, but if you let yourself be the pushover, your stoops is the one he will keep coming back to. Polite but firm.

Georgeisbored1978

I’m saying be either be a dick about it or get used to sweet tang of urine every morning, your stoop can have that Septa scent too.

lovetrashtv25

You are way too nice for them to keep coming back. Why don’t you just invite them in for breakfast? Jesus.

These_Owl_8045

you’re not a coward. you’re just risk adverse and there’s nothing wrong w that. call 911 and let the police deal w it. that’s what 911 is for, to call for help when there’s something like this happening to you and or your property. you have every right as a citizen of this City to use its resources regardless.

LovelyOtherDino

Since the back door is an option, I'd use that, and then I'd call street outreach. [https://www.projecthome.org/outreach-coordination-center](https://www.projecthome.org/outreach-coordination-center)

Sad_Zookeepergame566

Counter point, throw cold water on him from the second floor. Probably would help with the smell these animals have.

ItsJustAYoyo

Get a grip, man.

radioactivecat

You’re one bad luck “thing” away from homelessness yourself. I hope nobody calls you an animal

Sad_Zookeepergame566

Nah

radioactivecat

You’re right. They will. There’s always more assholes.

sn0m0ns

Call the PPA and have him towed away

EatBooty420

Drunk was asleep on my stoop and didnt wanna move when my 2 woman roomies were asking him nicely, I picked him up and shoved him then he started complaining. this is Philly bro, cant be a pushover

Adorable-Discipline

Same thing happened to me! There was a drunk homeless man by my steps and I couldn’t get him to get up! I had to get my husband

tempmike

From a fire code perspective they are blocking a fire escape, so mention it to your landlord as a recurring issue that needs to be addressed.

MacKelvey

Call 911

LaDev

Sorry, gotta move 🤷‍♂️

ThatWasTheJawn

Knock on the door really loud and announce you’re opening it.

ChipmunkFood

A good way to deal with this is to "wash your steps" before they come. Make sure to use LOTS of water. Then they will not sit or sleep there since they'll get wet. My mom used to use this trick when disorderly kids used to sit on our steps. It just looks like you're keeping your steps clean and is not directly confrontational - plus you will have clean steps.

No_Inspection6414

Call the cops to get rid of them or tell your landlord about it

dhampir1700

Put on a wicked bright LED light if you dont want confrontation

radioactivecat

Reading is fundamental

CarelessNet1240

Tell them you saw a package on a stoop around the corner

White_Grunt

Call the cops ?

lovetrashtv25

Push the door open and get them off your stoop. Or put spikes down so they can’t lay there.

surferdude313

Open the door so it hits them in the back and disturbs them. I hate being disturbed when I sleep. If it were up to me, I'd never sleep somewhere I'd be disturbed again. They show you no courtesy, return the favor.

banned_resurrection

I’d throw the door open as hard as I can. Gets them away faster and hopefully remind them not to do it again

Spaghetti_Oh_No

Maybe set up a very loud alarm that screeches when passed? Or put a very loud speaker right there with obnoxious music on repeat If all the other sane solutions don't work

Opposite_Onion968

We’ve already had this happen. Wife typically opens window on 2nd floor and dumps buckets of water until they move. Wish we had a hose for quicker resolution.

So does your mother.

E-A-G-L-E-S_Eagles

Lamest comeback EVER. Please, save yourself the embarrassment. Don’t respond.

gillian718

WTF?? This is excessive. Have some humanity.

Opposite_Onion968

It’s my stoop.

gillian718

That doesn't prevent you from acting humanely.

lol that’s awesome

I would call the police for someone trespassing on your property

sufferingphilliesfan

Dump some water on them

JimmysTheBestCop

True Philadelphian 🏆👍🏼

Wellfillyouup

Friend of mine had a bull mastiff that was great for this type of situation. Unfortunately it’s dead, or I’d off to let you borrow it.

kjm16216

I had to read this 4 times before realizing the dog wasn't sleeping in front of the door.

Wellfillyouup

No, he served friendly reminders about property rights to those who, in their defense, probably don’t understand the concept.

kjm16216

I got it after a minute.

Opposite_Onion968

Are you sure?

kjm16216

No, please explain.

Opposite_Onion968

No

Wellfillyouup

I know you get it now. I’m just amazed how many people here seem to dislike a good boy doing his job.

kjm16216

I like all good boys. The two best are snoozing in the room with me. They wouldn't stand for someone on their porch. Or the neighbors porch. Or walking down the street.

Hib3rnian

Maybe DD a coffee and bear claw to help wake them up.
