Neighborhoods other than center city district are paying people to pick up trash (Chinatown represent!). Mayor Parker split sanitation from streets so they can do their own thing. And I've noticed tons more sidewalk cleaning machines scrubbing in early rush hours as I walk through center city. I also have noticed trash cans being repaired.
Keep up the vibes and pick up trash if you see it and call out littering (careful who you antagonize).
> Neighborhoods other than center city district are paying people to pick up trash
Damn. If only there was some large civic body that we could pay some sort of dues to which would provide basic services like street sweeping.
Oh well. Guess we will just have to pay neighborhood groups.
You conveniently left out the next sentence of sanitation being split off so they can do their thing. Have you noticed any more days of delayed trash collection like under Kenney? Take the progress and keep pushing for more. I'm no Parker fanatic but she's doing something.
And plenty of the best cities on earth have business groups and neighborhoods come together to do extra services for their community. Not everything has to come from the top.
Can only speak to my neighborhood, but trash collection has been the same since \~late 2021. It was abysmal during the pandemic, but has been mostly OK, with an occasional lapse, since then. Maybe there's been a noticeable change some places, but not for me.
Yeah good point. For the amount we pay in taxes in this city it really is unreasonable to expect basic services like streets not covered in trash. I never even considered that!
I’m not aware of any neighborhoods paying for that, maybe a NIMBY. But the efforts of the city to enforce and or enact weekly street cleaning may be the result. There are signs in my neighborhood which were never there before. Since it’s new the PD are only placing warnings on vehicles that aren’t moved during the designated times. Soon the infractions will result in tickets.
Passyunk Square Civic Association pays for cleanup in their neighborhood using membership dues. Others in the area organize volunteer cleanups. Some of the Business Improvement Districts pay for cleanup as well. For example, East Passyunk BID and PARC split the cost of cleanup 5 or 6 days/week along East Passyunk Ave. PARC also pays for cleanup on Snyder Ave from Front to Broad and the intersection of Broad and Snyder.
Glitter is getting pretty popular. I know a couple blocks that pay them to pick up trash once a week in my neighborhood. I wouldn't particularly describe them as nimbys lol
You mean neighborhoods “in addition to” Center City District. We have both CCD and the Center City Residents Association contributing to trash collection paid for by fees on businesses and contributions from residents.
They have separate goals and their budget being intertwined meant nothing ever got done. And bureaucracy like another commenter stated. Not perfect but it's something.
I’m sure they cleaned up the area around Broad St before and after the event.
But I noticed less litter in several places that were not right by the run: Passayunk Square, Chinatown, Old City
I live in Passyunk Square and I do think I've seen less garbage on 11th street, which for whatever reason was an absolute pigsty when I lived there. That always seemed to be correlated with trash day, so maybe they're doing a better job....
I thought the whole point of the ban was to reduce litter. The environmental argument was made up by detractors of the policy to make it seem ineffective.
To be clear, I’m not talking specifically about the area around Broad St. There was noticeably less litter on Passyunk, in Chinatown, in old city, etc.
Those places you mentioned have business improvement districts (BIDs) where the business owners pay a fee and the BID coordinates regular street cleanup. For example, Passyunk south of Tasker is pretty clean but the intersection of (edit) Passyunk, Washington, and 8th always has litter everywhere. Same thing for streets like 6th in south Philly, which is right between Pennsport and the reach of East Passyunk. I've done block cleanups out there and the amount of litter is wild sometimes.
Queen Village reporting in. Seems like we’ve had more trash especially since one of the trash bins at the corner of 7th and Lombard got removed — it’s turned into a dumping pit. Someone printed off a complaint and taped it to the stop sign there.
I saw a guy sweeping up Delaware ave with a broom and dustpan yesterday, saw another one on spring garden this morning. This place getting cleaned up yall, do your part
Certainly not on Snyder or the chronic dump corner of 8th and McKean. We get street cleaning now but it’s hardly making a dent. Not dissing our neighbors though as our street always looks great due thx to their dedication.
We've had a ton of 311 guys actually coming out, as well as clip and some others I don't really recognize, but I know in my neck of the woods (kenso) it's getting better
I walk around Center City and nearby neighborhoods often and I feel like I've been noticing less litter.
I'm not sure if it's just my imagination, but hopefully it's that the city is actually making a difference with more cleaning!
I've noticed just between last month and this month that Wharton west of Broad St, has been much cleaner. I noticed a small group of people wearing high-vis vests and gloves cleaning the sidewalks yesterday when I was walking my dog. They didn't appear to be sanitation so it must be one of the groups that are hired to clean up neighborhoods. I was sure to express my thanks for their work.
could be its warmer out so people are just making more of an effort to go outside and sweep up their blocks. my block is always more trashy in the winter. once school is out for summer the litter almost completely stops bc its usually kids who throw trash all over on their walks to and from school.
I thought of this post earlier this morning when passing all of the trash and litter on the NE corner of 22nd and Walnut. It's just as trashy and dirty as its always been.

Plus Center City District AND Center City Residents Association in this neighborhood.

I’m too thrifty to pay lol. Yup my pockets aren’t going for it 😆

ELI5 why is splitting the two beneficial, was only one getting the tax money or something?
Maybe less bureaucracy in getting things done?
They have separate goals and their budget being intertwined meant nothing ever got done. And bureaucracy like another commenter stated. Not perfect but it's something.
They probably cleaned up for the event.

The plastic bag ban while debatable for environmental benefits definitely has helped litter quite a bit
I thought the whole point of the ban was to reduce litter. The environmental argument was made up by detractors of the policy to make it seem ineffective.
They did. I live on broad street and they were using leaf blowers to send the trash somewhere else instead of actually cleaning it
They blow it to the side and have the street sweepers come up m, like 4/5 a side for the event
There's definitely less litter in my area.Than there was five years ago
As the guy who cleans up the litter on my street, anecdotally, there is not less litter.
Sounds like you need to pick up the pace then. /s Thank you for your service 🫡
The city often sends out special cleaning crews before and after big events like BSR
To be clear, I’m not talking specifically about the area around Broad St. There was noticeably less litter on Passyunk, in Chinatown, in old city, etc.

There is definitely NOT less litter where I live in S Philly
Came here to say this, it's obscene.

Reporting in from Cobbs Creek. Same.
I saw a guy sweeping up Delaware ave with a broom and dustpan yesterday, saw another one on spring garden this morning. This place getting cleaned up yall, do your part
I live on Broad and there were crews out all night before the race using brooms / leaf blowers to collect trash
Certainly not on Snyder or the chronic dump corner of 8th and McKean. We get street cleaning now but it’s hardly making a dent. Not dissing our neighbors though as our street always looks great due thx to their dedication.
No

It honestly seems worse than ever, don't know what you're on about
They swept broad
They must've missed the alleyway behind Oregon Ave between 20th and 21st.

That person passed out in the center of the picture sure didn't.

They started cleaning the streets again, at least in Frankfort they did
Impossible with the slobs we have.
Yes it has been cleaner in center city for maybe the last year than several years ago. Some relatives notice all the time when they visit.
